    Эти идолы, как пугала на бахче, –
не могут говорить;
    их нужно носить –

    облачат затем в голубое и пурпурное одеяние;
    все эти истуканы – изделия мастеров.
10 Но Господь – это истинный Бог;
    Он – Бог живой и Царь вечный.

    утвердил мир Своей мудростью,
    распростер небеса Своим разумом.
13 Когда Он возвышает голос, шумят небесные воды;
    Он поднимает тучи с края земли.
    и выводит ветер из Своих кладовых.

14 Все люди глупы и нет у них знания;
    всякий плавильщик позорит себя своими идолами.
    Его изваяния лживы, и нет в них дыхания.
15 Они ничтожны и смешны;
    пробьет их час, и они погибнут.

    – На этот раз Я изгоняю тех,
кто живет в стране;
    Я пошлю им несчастье,

    «Воистину, это моя скорбь;
    я должен ее нести».
    нет их больше;

10 Hear the word of the Lord, O Israel:

2-3 Don’t act like the people who make horoscopes and try to read their fate and future in the stars! Don’t be frightened by predictions such as theirs, for it is all a pack of lies. Their ways are futile and foolish. They cut down a tree and carve an idol; they decorate it with gold and silver and fasten it securely in place with hammer and nails so that it won’t fall over. And there stands their god like a helpless scarecrow in a garden! It cannot speak, and it must be carried, for it cannot walk. Don’t be afraid of such a god, for it can neither harm nor help nor do you any good.

O Lord, there is no other god like you. For you are great, and your name is full of power. Who would not fear you, O King of nations? (And that title belongs to you alone!) Among all the wise men of the earth and in all the kingdoms of the world there isn’t anyone like you.

The wisest of men who worship idols are altogether stupid and foolish. They bring beaten sheets of silver from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz and give them to skillful goldsmiths who make their idols; then they clothe these gods in royal purple robes that expert tailors make.

10 But the Lord is the only true God, the living God, the everlasting King. The whole earth shall tremble at his anger; the world shall hide before his displeasure.

11 Say this to those who worship other gods: Your so-called gods, who have not made the heavens and earth, shall vanish from the earth. 12 But our God formed the earth by his power and wisdom, and by his intelligence he hung the stars in space and stretched out the heavens. 13 It is his voice that echoes in the thunder of the storm clouds. He causes mist to rise upon the earth; he sends the lightning and brings the rain, and from his treasuries he brings the wind.

14 But foolish men without knowledge of God bow before their idols. It is a shameful business that these men are in, for what they make are frauds, gods without life or power in them. 15 All are worthless, silly; they will be crushed when their makers perish. 16 But the God of Jacob is not like these foolish idols. He is the Creator of all, and Israel is his chosen nation. The Lord Almighty is his name.

17 Pack your bags, he says. Get ready now to leave; the siege will soon begin. 18 For suddenly I’ll fling you from this land and pour great troubles down; at last you shall feel my wrath.

19 Desperate is my wound. My grief is great. My sickness is incurable, but I must bear it. 20 My home is gone; my children have been taken away, and I will never see them again. There is no one left to help me rebuild my home. 21 The shepherds of my people have lost their senses; they no longer follow God nor ask his will. Therefore they perish, and their flocks are scattered. 22 Listen! Hear the terrible sound of great armies coming from the north. The cities of Judah shall become dens of jackals.

23 O Lord, I know it is not within the power of man to map his life and plan his course— 24 so you correct me, Lord; but please be gentle. Don’t do it in your anger, for I would die. 25 Pour out your fury on the nations who don’t obey the Lord, for they have destroyed Israel and made a wasteland of this entire country.

Living God or human handiwork

10 Listen to the word that the Lord has spoken to you, people of Israel!
The Lord proclaims:
Don’t follow the ways of the nations
    or be troubled by signs in the sky,
        even though the nations are troubled by them.
The rituals of the nations are hollow:
    a tree from the forest is chopped down
        and shaped by the craftsman’s tools.
It’s overlaid with silver and gold,
    and fastened securely with hammer and nails
        so it won’t fall over.
They are no different than a scarecrow
    in a cucumber patch:
    they can’t speak;
    they must be carried
        because they can’t walk.
Don’t be afraid of them,
    because they can’t do harm or good.
Lord, no one is like you!
    You are great,
    and great is your mighty name.
Who wouldn’t fear you,
    king of the nations?
That is your due;
    among all the wise of the nations
    and in all their countries,
        there is no one like you!
But they are both foolish and silly;
    they offer nothing
        because they are mere wood.
Covered with silver from Tarshish
    and gold from Uphaz,
        they are the work of a craftsman
        and the hands of a goldsmith.
Clothed in blue and purple,
    all of them nothing more than the work of artisans.
10 But the Lord is the true God!
    He’s the living God and the everlasting king!
When he’s angry, the earth quakes;
    the nations can’t endure his rage.

11 Tell them this: The gods who didn’t make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.[a]

12 But God made the earth by his might;
    he shaped the world by his wisdom,
    crafted the skies by his knowledge.
13 At the sound of his voice,
    the heavenly waters roar.
    He raises the clouds from the ends of the earth.
He sends the lightning with the rain,
    the wind from his treasuries.
14 Everyone is too foolish to understand;
    every goldsmith is dishonored by his idols,
        for their images are shams;
        they aren’t alive.
15 They are a delusion, a charade;
        at the appointed time they will vanish!
16 Jacob’s portion is utterly different
    because God has formed all things,
        including Israel, his very own people—
        the Lord of heavenly forces is his name!

Get ready for exile!

17 Pack your bags and get ready to leave,
    you who live under siege.[b]
18 The Lord proclaims:
I’m going to eject those who live in the land at this time;
    I will badger them until they leave.[c]

19 How terrible for me, due to my injury;
    my wound is terrible.
Yet I said to myself:
    This is my sickness,
        and I must bear it.
20 But now my tent is destroyed;
    all its ropes are cut,
        and my children are gone for good.
    There’s no one left to set up my tent frame
        and to attach the fabric.
21 The shepherd kings have lost their senses
    and don’t seek answers from the Lord.
That is why they have failed
    and their flock is scattered.
22 Listen! The sound is getting louder,
    a mighty uproar from the land of the north;
    it will reduce the towns of Judah to ruins,
        a den for wild dogs.
23 I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own,
    that we’re not able to direct our paths.
24 So correct me, Lord, but with justice,
    not in your anger,
        or else you will reduce me to nothing.
25 Pour out your wrath on the nations
        that ignore you
    and on the people
        who don’t call on you,
        since they have devoured Jacob;
        they have devoured him completely
            and ruined his country.
