9 О да би била главата ми вода, Очите ми извор на сълзи, Та да плача денем и нощем За убитите на дъщерята на людете ми!
2 О, да би имало за мене в пустинята убежище за пътници, За да оставя людете си и да си отида от тях! Защото те всички са прелюбодейци, Сбирщина от вероломци.
3 Запъват езика си <като че ли е> лъкът им за лъжа, Засилват се на земята, но не за честността; Защото напредват от зло в зло, А Мене не познават, казва Господ.
4 Пазете се всеки от ближния си, И нямайте доверие на никой брат; Защото всеки брат ще изневерява до край, И всеки ближен разпространява клевети.
5 Всеки мами ближния си, Никога не говорят истината, Научиха езика си да говори лъжи, До уморяване вършат беззаконие.
6 Жилището ти е всред коварство; Чрез коварство те отказват да Ме познаят, казва Господ.
7 Затова така казва Господ на Силите: Ето, ще ги претопя та ще ги опитам; Защото какво друго да направя поради дъщерята на людете Ми?
8 Езикът им е смъртоносна стрела, говори коварно; С устата си човек говори мирно на ближния си, Но в сърцето си поставя засада против него.
9 Няма ли да ги накажа за това? казва Господ; Душата Ми не ще ли въздаде на такъв народ?
10 За планините ще подема плач и ридание, За пасбищата на степите жалеене, Защото така изпогоряха щото няма кой да мине през тях, Нито се чува глас на стадо; От небесна птица до животно Побягнаха, отидоха.
11 Аз ще обърна Ерусалим на грамади, жилище на чакали, И ще обърна на пустиня Юдовите градове, <останали> без жители.
12 Кой е мъдър човек та да може да разбере това, Комуто са говорили устата Господни, за да обясни, Защо загина страната И е изгорена като пустиня, та да няма кой да минава през нея?
13 И Господ казва: Понеже оставиха Моя закон, Който поставих пред тях, И не послушаха гласа Ми, Нито ходиха по него,
14 Но ходиха по упоритостта на своето сърце, И подир ваалимите, както ги научиха бащите им,
15 Затова, така казва Господ на Силите, Израилевият Бог: Ето, Аз ще нахраня тия люде с пелин, И ще ги напоя с горчива вода;
16 Тоже ще ги разпръсна между народи, Които нито те, нито бащите им са познали; И ще изпратя нож подир тях, Догдето ги изтребя.
17 Така говори Господ на Силите: Размислете и повикайте да дойдат оплаквачките, И изпратете за вещите жени, за да дойдат;
18 И нека побързат да подемат ридание за нас, За да поронят очите ни сълзи, И клепачите ни да излеят вода.
19 Защото глас на ридание се чува от Сион, <който казва>: Как сме разорени! Много сме посрамени, защото оставихме земята, Понеже събориха жилищата ни.
20 Обаче, слушайте, жени, словото Господно, И нека приеме ухото ви словото на устата Му; Научете дъщерите си на ридание, И всяка ближната си на плач.
21 Защото смъртта възлезе през прозорците ни, Влезе в палатите ни, За да изсече децата от улиците, Юношите от площадите.
22 Речи: Така казва Господ. Човешки трупове ще паднат Като тор по лицето на нивата, И като ръкойката зад жетвар, Която никой няма да събере.
23 Така казва Господ: Мъдрият да не се хвали с мъдростта си, Силният да не се хвали със силата си, И богатият да не се хвали с богатството си;
24 Но който се хвали нека се хвали с това, Гдето разбира и познава Мене, Че съм Господ, Който извършвам милост, Правосъдие и правда на земята; Понеже в това благоволя, казва Господ,
25 Ето, идат дни, казва Господ, Когато Аз ще накажа Всичките обрязани заедно с необрязаните;
26 Египет, Юда, Едом, Амонците, Моав, И всички, които си стрижат издадените части на косата, Които живеят в пустинята; Защото всички <тия> народи са необрязани, А целият Израилев дом е с необрязано сърце.

9 [a] О, да би имало в пустинята място за пребиваване на пътници, за да оставя своя народ и да отида при тях! Защото всички сънародници са прелюбодейци, сбирщина от вероломци. 2 (A)„Опъват езиците си като лъкове, лъжа, а не истина владее в страната, защото от едно зло минават на друго и не Ме познават“ – казва Господ.
3 (B)Пазете се от ближния си и не се доверявайте на своя брат! Защото всеки брат мами и всеки ближен ходи да клевети. 4 Всеки мами ближния си и не говорят истината. Приучиха езика си да говори лъжа, неуморно вършат беззаконие. 5 „Живееш сред измама. Поради измама те се отказват да Ме признаят“ – казва Господ. 6 Затова така казва Господ Вседържител: „Ето ще ги разтопя и ще ги изпитам, защото какво друго мога да сторя със Своя народ? 7 Езикът им е смъртоносна стрела, говори коварно. С уста говорят дружелюбно на ближния си, но в сърцето си му готвят примка. 8 (C)Няма ли да ги накажа за това?“ – казва Господ. „Душата ми няма ли да въздаде на един такъв народ?“

9 Аз възвестявам: „Ще извися плач и ридание за планините, жалба – за степите, защото така са изгорели, че никой повече няма да минава през тях, а не се чува и глас на стадо. Побягнаха, отидоха – от птица в небето до животно.“ 10 (D)Защото Господ каза: „И ще обърна Йерусалим в купища развалини, жилище на чакали. А градовете на Юдея ще направя пустиня без обитател.“
11 „Но кой е мъдрият човек, който може да разбере това и на когото Господ говори, за да обясни защо загина страната и е изгорена като пустиня, през която никой не минава?“ 12 Господ отговори: „Понеже изоставиха Моя закон, който им дадох, и не послушаха гласа Ми, и не го следваха, 13 (E)но ходеха според упорството на сърцето си и следваха ваалите, както ги учеха предците им, 14 (F)затова – така казва Господ Вседържител, Израилевият Бог – ето Аз ще дам на този народ да яде пелин и ще го напоя с отрова. 15 (G)И ще ги разпръсна между народи, които не познаваха нито те, нито предците им, и ще изпратя меч да ги преследва, докато ги унищожа.“

24 «Ето идват дни – казва Господ, – когато ще накажа всички обрязани и необрязани: 25 Египет и Юдея, Едом и амонците, и Моав, и всички, които живеят в пустинята и си режат косите в кръг, понеже всички тези народи са необрязани телесно, а целият израилски дом е с необрязано сърце»’.“

9 [a]1 Oh, that my head were a spring of water
and my eyes a fountain of tears!(A)
I would weep(B) day and night
for the slain of my people.(C)
2 Oh, that I had in the desert(D)
a lodging place for travelers,
so that I might leave my people
and go away from them;
for they are all adulterers,(E)
a crowd of unfaithful(F) people.
3 “They make ready their tongue
like a bow, to shoot lies;(G)
it is not by truth
that they triumph[b] in the land.
They go from one sin to another;
they do not acknowledge(H) me,”
declares the Lord.
4 “Beware of your friends;(I)
do not trust anyone in your clan.(J)
For every one of them is a deceiver,[c](K)
and every friend a slanderer.(L)
5 Friend deceives friend,(M)
and no one speaks the truth.(N)
They have taught their tongues to lie;(O)
they weary themselves with sinning.
6 You[d] live in the midst of deception;(P)
in their deceit they refuse to acknowledge me,”
declares the Lord.
7 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says:
“See, I will refine(Q) and test(R) them,
for what else can I do
because of the sin of my people?
8 Their tongue(S) is a deadly arrow;
it speaks deceitfully.
With their mouths they all speak cordially to their neighbors,(T)
but in their hearts they set traps(U) for them.(V)
9 Should I not punish them for this?”
declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge(W) myself
on such a nation as this?”
10 I will weep and wail for the mountains
and take up a lament concerning the wilderness grasslands.(X)
They are desolate and untraveled,
and the lowing of cattle is not heard.
The birds(Y) have all fled
and the animals are gone.
11 “I will make Jerusalem a heap(Z) of ruins,
a haunt of jackals;(AA)
and I will lay waste the towns of Judah(AB)
so no one can live there.”(AC)
12 Who is wise(AD) enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the Lord and can explain it? Why has the land been ruined and laid waste like a desert that no one can cross?
13 The Lord said, “It is because they have forsaken my law, which I set before them; they have not obeyed me or followed my law.(AE) 14 Instead, they have followed(AF) the stubbornness of their hearts;(AG) they have followed the Baals, as their ancestors taught them.” 15 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “See, I will make this people eat bitter food(AH) and drink poisoned water.(AI) 16 I will scatter them among nations(AJ) that neither they nor their ancestors have known,(AK) and I will pursue them with the sword(AL) until I have made an end of them.”(AM)
17 This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“Consider now! Call for the wailing women(AN) to come;
send for the most skillful of them.
18 Let them come quickly
and wail over us
till our eyes overflow with tears
and water streams from our eyelids.(AO)
19 The sound of wailing is heard from Zion:
‘How ruined(AP) we are!
How great is our shame!
We must leave our land
because our houses are in ruins.’”
20 Now, you women, hear the word of the Lord;
open your ears to the words of his mouth.(AQ)
Teach your daughters how to wail;
teach one another a lament.(AR)
21 Death has climbed in through our windows(AS)
and has entered our fortresses;
it has removed the children from the streets
and the young men(AT) from the public squares.
22 Say, “This is what the Lord declares:
“‘Dead bodies will lie
like dung(AU) on the open field,
like cut grain behind the reaper,
with no one to gather them.’”
23 This is what the Lord says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom(AV)
or the strong boast of their strength(AW)
or the rich boast of their riches,(AX)
24 but let the one who boasts boast(AY) about this:
that they have the understanding to know(AZ) me,
that I am the Lord,(BA) who exercises kindness,(BB)
justice and righteousness(BC) on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the Lord.
25 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh(BD)— 26 Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab and all who live in the wilderness in distant places.[e](BE) For all these nations are really uncircumcised,(BF) and even the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.(BG)”

2 If only I had a traveler’s lodging place
in the wilderness,(B)
I would abandon my people
and depart from them,
for they are all adulterers,(C)
a solemn assembly of treacherous people.(D)
3 They bent their tongues like their bows;
lies and not faithfulness prevail in the land,
for they proceed from one evil to another,
and they do not take me into account.(E)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Imminent Ruin and Exile
4 Everyone has to be on guard against his friend.
Don’t trust any brother,
for every brother will certainly deceive,(F)
and every friend spread slander.(G)
5 Each one betrays his friend;(H)
no one tells the truth.
They have taught their tongues to speak lies;
they wear themselves out doing wrong.
6 You live in a world of deception.[b](I)
In their deception they refuse to know me.(J)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
7 Therefore, this is what the Lord of Armies says:
I am about to refine them and test them,(K)
for what else can I do
because of my dear[c] people?[d]
8 Their tongues are deadly arrows—
they speak deception.(L)
With his mouth
one speaks peaceably with his friend,
but inwardly he sets up an ambush.
9 Should I not punish them for these things?
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Should I not avenge myself(M)
on such a nation as this?
10 I will raise weeping and a lament
over the mountains,
a dirge over the wilderness grazing land,
for they have been so scorched
that no one passes through.
The sound of cattle is no longer heard.
From the birds of the sky to the animals,(N)
everything has fled—they have gone away.
11 I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble,(O)
a jackals’ den.(P)
I will make the cities of Judah a desolation,
an uninhabited place.
12 Who is the person wise enough to understand this?(Q) Who has the Lord spoken to, that he may explain it? Why is the land destroyed and scorched like a wilderness, so no one can pass through?
13 The Lord said, “It is because they abandoned my instruction,(R) which I set before them, and did not obey my voice or walk according to it. 14 Instead, they followed the stubbornness of their hearts(S) and followed the Baals as their ancestors taught them.”(T) 15 Therefore, this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to feed this people wormwood(U) and give them poisonous water to drink.(V) 16 I will scatter them among the nations(W) that they and their ancestors have not known. I will send a sword after them until I have finished them off.”
Mourning over Judah
17 This is what the Lord of Armies says:
Consider, and summon the women who mourn;(X)
send for the skillful women.
18 Let them come quickly to raise a lament over us
so that our eyes may overflow with tears,
our eyelids be soaked with weeping.
19 For a sound of lamentation is heard from Zion:
How devastated we are.
We are greatly ashamed,(Y)
for we have abandoned the land;
our dwellings have been torn down.
20 Now hear the word of the Lord, you women.
Pay attention to[e] the words from his mouth.
Teach your daughters a lament
and one another a dirge,
21 for Death(Z) has climbed through our windows;
it has entered our fortresses,
cutting off children from the streets,
young men from the squares.
22 “Speak as follows: ‘This is what the Lord declares: Human corpses will fall like manure on the surface of the field,(AA) like newly cut grain(AB) after the reaper with no one to gather it.
Boast in the Lord
23 “‘This is what the Lord says:
The wise person should not boast in his wisdom;
the strong should not boast in his strength;
the wealthy should not boast in his wealth.
24 But the one who boasts should boast in this:
that he understands and knows me(AC)—
that I am the Lord, showing faithful love,
justice, and righteousness on the earth,
for I delight in these things.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
25 “‘Look, the days are coming—this is the Lord’s declaration—when I will punish all the circumcised yet uncircumcised:(AD) 26 Egypt, Judah, Edom, the Ammonites, Moab, and all the inhabitants of the desert who clip the hair on their temples.[f] All these nations are uncircumcised, and the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.’”(AE)
