Ecclesiastes 5
King James Version
5 Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.
2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
3 For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words.
4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.
5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?
7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.
8 If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.
9 Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field.
10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
11 When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?
12 The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.
13 There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt.
14 But those riches perish by evil travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand.
15 As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.
16 And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?
17 All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.
18 Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.
19 Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.
20 For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.

Be Careful How You Worship
5 Be careful what you do when you enter the house of God. Fools go there to offer sacrifices, because all they do is sin.[a] But it's best just to listen when you go to worship. 2 Don't talk before you think or make promises to God without thinking them through. God is in heaven, and you are on earth, so don't talk too much. 3 If you keep thinking about something, you will dream about it. If you talk too much, you will say the wrong thing.
4 (A) God doesn't like fools. So don't be slow to keep your promises to God. 5 It's better not to make a promise at all than to make one and not keep it. 6 Don't let your mouth get you in trouble! And don't say to the worship leader,[b] “I didn't mean what I said.” God can destroy everything you have worked for, so don't say something that makes God angry.
7 Respect and obey God! Daydreaming leads to a lot of senseless talk.[c]
8 Don't be surprised if the poor of your country are abused, and injustice takes the place of justice. After all, the lower officials must do what the higher ones order them to do. 9 And since the king is the highest official, he benefits most from the taxes paid on the land.[d]
10 If you love money and wealth, you will never be satisfied with what you have. This doesn't make a bit of sense. 11 The more you have, the more everyone expects from you. Your money won't do you any good—others will just spend it for you. 12 If you have to work hard for a living, you can rest well at night, even if you don't have much to eat. But if you are rich, you can't even sleep.
13 I have seen something terribly unfair. People get rich, but it does them no good. 14 Suddenly they lose everything in a bad business deal, then have nothing to leave for their children. 15 (B) They came into this world naked, and when they die, they will be just as naked. They can't take anything with them, and they won't have anything to show for all their work. 16 That's terribly unfair. They leave the world just as they came. They gained nothing from running after the wind. 17 Besides all this, they are always gloomy at mealtime, and they are troubled, sick, and bitter.[e]
18 What is the best thing to do in the short life God has given us? I think we should enjoy eating, drinking, and working hard. This is what God intends for us to do. 19 Suppose you are very rich and able to enjoy everything you own. Then go ahead and enjoy working hard—this is God's gift to you. 20 God will keep you so happy that you won't have time to worry about each day.

för Gud är i himlen och du på jorden.

2 Drömmar kommer av mycket arbete
och dåraktigt tal av många ord.
3 När du har gett Gud ett löfte, så dröj då inte med att fullfölja det, för han har inget till övers för dårar. Håll det du lovat! 4 Det är bättre att du inte lovar något, än att du lovar något som du sedan inte fullföljer. 5 Låt inte din mun förleda dig till att synda, och säg inte till sändebudet[a] att det var ett misstag att lova något. Varför skulle Gud behöva bli vred för dina ord och förstöra vad du har gjort? 6 Med många drömmar kommer meningslöshet och mångordighet. Frukta du Gud!
Rikedomens förgänglighet
7 Om du ser att en fattig förtrycks och att rätt och rättfärdighet åsidosätts i provinsen, bli inte förvånad. Varje tjänsteman övervakas ju av dem som är högre i rang, och dessa har i sin tur sina överordnade. 8 Men det är till förmån för landet att det finns en kung som låter jorden brukas.[b]
9 Den som älskar pengar får aldrig nog,
inte heller den som älskar rikedom.
Även detta är meningslöst.
10 Ju mer man får av det goda,
desto fler blir det som tär på det.
Vad har då ägaren för glädje av rikedomen,
förutom att få se den?
11 En arbetare sover gott,
vare sig han har mycket eller lite att äta,
men den rikes överflöd ger honom ingen ro att sova.
12 Jag har sett något ont och beklämmande under solen:
hopsparad rikedom blir till olycka för sin ägare.
13 Om hans egendom genom någon olycka går förlorad,
och om han har en son, får denne ingenting.
14 Lika naken som han föddes går han bort.
Inget av det som han med möda samlat ihop, kan han ta med sig.
15 Också detta är ont och beklämmande.
Som han kom ska han också gå bort.
Vad får han för nytta av att bemöda sig med det som försvinner i vinden?
16 Hela sitt liv lever han i mörker och stor oro,
sjukdom och bitterhet.
Livsglädje är en gåva av Gud
17 Jag har också insett att det är gott och skönt för människan att äta och dricka och finna tillfredsställelse i sitt arbete som hon bemödar sig med under solen, så länge Gud låter henne leva, för det är hennes del. 18 Om Gud ger en människa rikedom och ägodelar och låter henne njuta av dem, ta dem till sig och glädja sig åt sin möda, är det en gåva från Gud. 19 Hon reflekterar inte ofta över sina levnadsdagar, eftersom Gud fyller hennes sinne med en djup glädje.
