2 Сказал я в сердце моем: 'дай, испытаю я тебя весельем, и насладись добром'; но и это--суета!
2 О смехе сказал я: 'глупость!', а о веселье: 'что оно делает?'
3 Вздумал я в сердце моем услаждать вином тело мое и, между тем, как сердце мое руководилось мудростью, придержаться и глупости, доколе не увижу, что хорошо для сынов человеческих, что должны были бы они делать под небом в немногие дни жизни своей.
4 Я предпринял большие дела: построил себе домы, посадил себе виноградники,
5 устроил себе сады и рощи и насадил в них всякие плодовитые дерева;
6 сделал себе водоемы для орошения из них рощей, произращающих деревья;
7 приобрел себе слуг и служанок, и домочадцы были у меня; также крупного и мелкого скота было у меня больше, нежели у всех, бывших прежде меня в Иерусалиме;
8 собрал себе серебра и золота и драгоценностей от царей и областей; завел у себя певцов и певиц и услаждения сынов человеческих--разные музыкальные орудия.
9 И сделался я великим и богатым больше всех, бывших прежде меня в Иерусалиме; и мудрость моя пребыла со мною.
10 Чего бы глаза мои ни пожелали, я не отказывал им, не возбранял сердцу моему никакого веселья, потому что сердце мое радовалось во всех трудах моих, и это было моею долею от всех трудов моих.
11 И оглянулся я на все дела мои, которые сделали руки мои, и на труд, которым трудился я, делая [их]: и вот, всё--суета и томление духа, и нет [от них] пользы под солнцем!
12 И обратился я, чтобы взглянуть на мудрость и безумие и глупость: ибо что [может сделать] человек после царя [сверх того], что уже сделано?
13 И увидел я, что преимущество мудрости перед глупостью такое же, как преимущество света перед тьмою:
14 у мудрого глаза его--в голове его, а глупый ходит во тьме; но узнал я, что одна участь постигает их всех.
15 И сказал я в сердце моем: 'и меня постигнет та же участь, как и глупого: к чему же я сделался очень мудрым?' И сказал я в сердце моем, что и это--суета;
16 потому что мудрого не будут помнить вечно, как и глупого; в грядущие дни все будет забыто, и увы! мудрый умирает наравне с глупым.
17 И возненавидел я жизнь, потому что противны стали мне дела, которые делаются под солнцем; ибо всё--суета и томление духа!
18 И возненавидел я весь труд мой, которым трудился под солнцем, потому что должен оставить его человеку, который будет после меня.
19 И кто знает: мудрый ли будет он, или глупый? А он будет распоряжаться всем трудом моим, которым я трудился и которым показал себя мудрым под солнцем. И это--суета!
20 И обратился я, чтобы внушить сердцу моему отречься от всего труда, которым я трудился под солнцем,
21 потому что иной человек трудится мудро, с знанием и успехом, и должен отдать всё человеку, не трудившемуся в том, как бы часть его. И это--суета и зло великое!
22 Ибо что будет иметь человек от всего труда своего и заботы сердца своего, что трудится он под солнцем?
23 Потому что все дни его--скорби, и его труды--беспокойство; даже и ночью сердце его не знает покоя. И это--суета!
24 Не во власти человека и то благо, чтобы есть и пить и услаждать душу свою от труда своего. Я увидел, что и это--от руки Божией;
25 потому что кто может есть и кто может наслаждаться без Него?
26 Ибо человеку, который добр пред лицем Его, Он дает мудрость и знание и радость; а грешнику дает заботу собирать и копить, чтобы [после] отдать доброму пред лицем Божиим. И это--суета и томление духа!

Но и это оказалось суетой. 2 О смехе я сказал: «Безумие», а о веселье: «Что оно дает?» 3 Я пытался утешить себя вином и, сохраняя мудрость, предаться глупости. Я хотел увидеть, что стоит людям делать под небом в немногие дни их жизни.
4 Я совершил великие дела: построил себе дома, и насадил виноградники, 5 разбил сады и рощи, и посадил в них разные плодовые деревья. 6 Я сделал водоемы, чтобы поливать цветущие деревья в роще. 7 Купил себе рабов и рабынь, и были у меня и другие рабы, рожденные в доме моем. Также крупного и мелкого скота было у меня больше, чем у кого-либо, кто жил до меня в Иерусалиме. 8 Я собрал себе серебро, и золото, и богатство царей и областей. Приобрел я певцов, и певиц, и много наложниц[a] – отраду сердца мужчин. 9 Я превзошел величием всех, кто жил в Иерусалиме до меня. При всем этом мудрость моя оставалась со мной.
10 Чего бы ни пожелали глаза мои, я ни в чем им не отказывал;
сердцу своему я не отказывал в удовольствии.
Мое сердце радовалось от всего, что я делал –
это и было наградой за весь мой труд.
11 Но когда я посмотрел на все, что сделали мои руки,
и на тот труд, что я совершил,
я увидел, что все суета, все – погоня за ветром,
и ни в чем нет пользы под солнцем.
Мудрость и глупость – суетны
12 Затем я стал размышлять о мудрости,
о безумии и глупости.
Ведь что еще может сделать преемник царя,
кроме того, что уже делалось?
13 И увидел я, что мудрость лучше глупости,
как и свет лучше тьмы.
14 Мудрый ясно видит куда идет,
а глупый блуждает во тьме.
Но я понял,
что их обоих ждет одна участь.
15 Затем я сказал себе:
«Участь глупого постигнет и меня,
так к чему же мне моя мудрость?»
И я сказал себе,
что и это суета.
16 Потому что мудрого, также как и глупого,
не будут помнить вечно;
придет время – забудут обоих.
Мудрый умирает, как и глупый!
Суетность человеческого труда
17 И возненавидел я жизнь, потому что печальным показался мне всякий труд, который делается под солнцем. Все – суета, все – погоня за ветром. 18 Я возненавидел все, ради чего трудился под солнцем, потому что все это я должен оставить тому, кто придет после меня. 19 И кто знает, будет ли он мудрым или глупым? А ведь он будет управлять всем, что я приобрел под солнцем тяжелым трудом и мудростью. И это тоже суета.
20 И сердце мое впало в отчаяние от всего труда, который я делал под солнцем, 21 потому что человек может трудиться с мудростью, знанием и умением, а затем должен оставить все тому, кто палец о палец не ударил. И это – суета, это – большая несправедливость. 22 Что приобретает человек от всего своего труда и переживаний под солнцем? 23 Все дни труда его – боль и скорбь, и даже ночью разум его не знает покоя. Это тоже суета.
24 Нет ничего лучше для человека, чем есть, пить и находить наслаждение в труде. Я понял, что и это дает рука Божья, 25 ведь кто без Него может есть и наслаждаться? 26 Человеку, который угоден Ему, Он дает мудрость, знание и счастье, а грешнику – бремя: собирать и копить богатство, чтобы передать его тому, кто угоден Богу. И это – суета, это – погоня за ветром.

The Vanity of Pleasure(A)
2 I said (B)in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with (C)mirth; [a]therefore enjoy pleasure”; but surely, (D)this also was vanity. 2 I said of laughter—“Madness!”; and of mirth, “What does it accomplish?” 3 (E)I searched in my heart how [b]to gratify my flesh with wine, while guiding my heart with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was (F)good for the sons of men to do under heaven all the days of their lives.
4 I made my works great, I built myself (G)houses, and planted myself vineyards. 5 I made myself gardens and orchards, and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6 I made myself water pools from which to [c]water the growing trees of the grove. 7 I acquired male and female servants, and had [d]servants born in my house. Yes, I had greater possessions of herds and flocks than all who were in Jerusalem before me. 8 (H)I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the special treasures of kings and of the provinces. I acquired male and female singers, the delights of the sons of men, and [e]musical instruments of all kinds.
9 (I)So I became great and [f]excelled (J)more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me.
10 Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them.
I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure,
For my heart rejoiced in all my labor;
And (K)this was my [g]reward from all my labor.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done
And on the labor in which I had toiled;
And indeed all was (L)vanity and grasping for the wind.
There was no profit under the sun.
The End of the Wise and the Fool
12 Then I turned myself to consider wisdom (M)and madness and folly;
For what can the man do who succeeds the king?—
Only what he has already (N)done.
13 Then I saw that wisdom (O)excels folly
As light excels darkness.
14 (P)The wise man’s eyes are in his head,
But the fool walks in darkness.
Yet I myself perceived
That (Q)the same event happens to them all.
15 So I said in my heart,
“As it happens to the fool,
It also happens to me,
And why was I then more wise?”
Then I said in my heart,
“This also is vanity.”
16 For there is (R)no more remembrance of the wise than of the fool forever,
Since all that now is will be forgotten in the days to come.
And how does a wise man die?
As the fool!
17 Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.
18 Then I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because (S)I must leave it to the man who will come after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 Therefore I turned my heart and despaired of all the labor in which I had toiled under the sun. 21 For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his [h]heritage to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 (T)For what has man for all his labor, and for the striving of his heart with which he has toiled under the sun? 23 For all his days are (U)sorrowful, and his work burdensome; even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.
24 (V)Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God. 25 For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, [i]more than I? 26 For God gives (W)wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that (X)he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

2 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
2 I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?
3 I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:
5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:
6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:
7 I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.
9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.

21 For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
22 For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?
23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.
24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
25 For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?
26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Pleasures Are Meaningless
2 I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure(A) to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless. 2 “Laughter,”(B) I said, “is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?” 3 I tried cheering myself with wine,(C) and embracing folly(D)—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.
4 I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself(E) and planted vineyards.(F) 5 I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6 I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves(G) who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. 8 I amassed silver and gold(H) for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces.(I) I acquired male and female singers,(J) and a harem[a] as well—the delights of a man’s heart. 9 I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem(K) before me.(L) In all this my wisdom stayed with me.
10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;
I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my labor,
and this was the reward for all my toil.
11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;(M)
nothing was gained under the sun.(N)
Wisdom and Folly Are Meaningless
12 Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom,
and also madness and folly.(O)
What more can the king’s successor do
than what has already been done?(P)
13 I saw that wisdom(Q) is better than folly,(R)
just as light is better than darkness.
14 The wise have eyes in their heads,
while the fool walks in the darkness;
but I came to realize
that the same fate overtakes them both.(S)
15 Then I said to myself,
“The fate of the fool will overtake me also.
What then do I gain by being wise?”(T)
I said to myself,
“This too is meaningless.”
16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;(U)
the days have already come when both have been forgotten.(V)
Like the fool, the wise too must die!(W)
Toil Is Meaningless
17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(X) 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.(Y) 19 And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish?(Z) Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun?(AA) 23 All their days their work is grief and pain;(AB) even at night their minds do not rest.(AC) This too is meaningless.
24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink(AD) and find satisfaction in their own toil.(AE) This too, I see, is from the hand of God,(AF) 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?(AG) 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom,(AH) knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth(AI) to hand it over to the one who pleases God.(AJ) This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
