7 О и го избави от всичките му беди, и му даде благоволение и мъдрост преди Египетския цар Фараона, който го постави управител над Египет и над целия си дом.
2 А той каза: Братя и бащи, слушайте: Бог на славата се яви на отца ни Авраама когато беше в Месопотамия, преди да се засели в Харан, и му рече,
3 О И като се навършиха четиридесет години, яви му се ангел Господен в пустинята на Синайската планина, всред пламъка на една запалена къпина.
4 Тогава той излезе от Халдейската земя и се засели в Харан. И оттам, след смъртта на баща му, Бог го пресели в тая земя, в която вие сега живеете.
5 И не му даде наследство в нея ни колкото една стъпка от нога, а обеща се да я даде за притежание нему и на потомството му след него, докато той още нямаше чадо.
6 И Бог му говори в смисъл, че неговите потомци щяха да бъдат преселени в чужда земя, дето щяха да ги поробят и притесняват четиристотин години.
7 Но аз, рече Бог, ще съдя народа, на който ще робуват: и подир това ще излязат и ще ми служат на това място.
8 И му даде в завет обрязването; и така Авраам роди Исаака, и обряза го в осмия ден; Исаака роди Якова, а Яков дванадесетте патриарси.
9 А патриарсите завидяха на Йосифа та го продадоха в Египет; Бог обаче беше с него,
11 И настана глад по цялата Египетска и Ханаанска земя и голямо бедствие; и бащите ни не намираха прехрана.
12 А Яков, като чу, че имало жито в Египет, изпрати първи път бащите ни;
13 и на втория път Йосиф се опозна на братята си, и Йосифовия род стана известен на Фараона.
14 Йосиф прати да повикат баща му Якова и целия му род, седемдесет и пет души.

17 А като наближаваше времето да се изпълни обещанието, което Бог беше утвърдил на Авраама, людете бяха нарасли и се умножили в Египет,
18 докле се издигна друг цар над Египет, който не познаваше Йосифа.
19 Той с коварно постъпване против нашия род дотолкова притесняваше бащите ни, щото да хвърля децата им за да не остават живи.
20 В това време се роди Моисей, който беше прекрасно дете, и когото храниха три месеца в бащиния му дом.
21 И когато го хвърлиха, фараоновата дъщеря го взе и го отхрани за свой син.
22 И Моисей биде научен на всичката Египетска мъдрост; и бе силен в слово и в дело.
23 А като навършваше четиридесетата си година, дойде му на сърце да посети братята си Изриляните.
24 И бидейки, един от тях онеправдан, защити го, и отмъсти за притеснения като порази Египтянина.
25 мислейки, че братята му ще разберат какво Бог чрез негова ръка им дава избавление; но те не разбраха.
26 На утрешния ден той им се яви когато двама от тях се биеха, и като искаше да ги помири, каза, Човеци, вие сте братя; защо се онеправдавате един, друг?
27 А тоя, който онеправдаваше ближния си, го отблъсна, и рече, Кой те е поставил началник и съдия над нас?
28 И мене ли искаш да убиеш както уби вчера Египтянина?
29 Поради тая дума, Мойсей побягна, и стана пришелец в Мадиамската земя, дето роди двама сина.
31 А Мойсей, като видя гледката, почуди и се; но когато се приближаваше да прегледа, дойде глас от Господ,
32 "Аз съм Бог на бащите ти, Бог Авраамов, Исааков, и Яковов". И Моисей се разтрепери и не смееше да погледне.
33 И Господ му рече, "изуй обущата от нозете си, защото мястото, на което стоиш, е света земя.
34 Видях, видях злостраданието на людете, които са в Египет, чух стенанието им, слязох за да ги избавя. Дойди, прочее, и ще те изпратя в Египет".
35 Този Моисей, когото бяха отказали да приемат като му рекоха, Кой те постави началник и съдия? него Бог, чрез ръката на ангела, който му се яви в къпината, прати и за началник и за избавител.
36 Той ги изведе, като върши чудеса и знамения в Египет, в Червеното море, и в пустинята през четиридесет години.
37 Това е същия Моисей, който рече на израиляните: "Бог ще ви въздигне от братята ви пророк, както въздигна и мене".

39 когото нашите бащи не искаха да послушат, но го отхвърлиха, и се повърнаха със сърцата си в Египет,
40 казвайки на Аарона, "Направи ни богове, които да ходят пред нас; защото тоя Моисей, който ни изведе из Египетската земя, не знаем що му стана".
41 И през ония дни те си направиха теле, и принесоха жертва на идола, и се веселяха в това, което техните ръце бяха направили.
42 Затова Бог се отвърна от тях, и ги предаде да служат на небесното войнство, както е писано в книгата на пророците:_ 43 Напротив, носехте скинията на Молоха, И звездата на бога Рефана, Изображенията, които си направихте за да им се кланяте; Затова ще ви преселя оттатък Вавилон".
44 Скинията на свидетелството беше с бащите ни в пустинята, според както заповяда оня, който каза на Мойсея да я направи по образа който бе видял;
45 която нашите бащи по реда си приеха и внесоха с Исуса Навиева във владенията на народите, които Бог изгони пред нашите бащи: и така стоеше до дните на Давида,
46 който придоби Божието благоволение, и поиска да намери обиталище за Якововия Бог.
47 А Соломон му построи дом.
48 Но всевишния не обитава в ръкотворни храмове, както казва пророка:_ 49 "Небето ми е престол, А земята е мое подножие; Какъв дом ще построите за мене? Казва Господ, Или какво е мястото за моя покой?"
50 Не направи ли моята ръка всичко това?
51 Коравовратни и с необрязано сърце и уши! вие всякога се противите на Светия Дух; както правеха бащите ви, така правите и вие.
52 Кого от пророците не гониха бащите ви? а още и избиха ония, които предизвестиха за дохождането на тогова Праведника, на когото вие сега станахте предатели и убийци,
53 вие, които приехте закона чрез ангелско служение, и го не опазихте.
54 А като слушаха това, сърцата им се късаха от яд, и те скърцаха със зъби на него.
55 А Стефан, бидейки пълен със Светия Дух, погледна на небето, и видя Божията слава и Исуса стоящ отдясно на Бога;
56 И Рече: Ето, виждам небесата отворени, и Човешкият Син стоящ отдясно на Бога.
57 Но те, като изкрещяха със силен глас, запушиха си ушите и единодушно се спуснаха върху него.
58 И като го изтласкаха вън от града, хвърляха камъни върху него. И свидетелите сложиха дрехите си при нозете на един момък на име Савел.
59 И хвърлиха камъни върху Стефана, който призоваваше Христа, казвайки: Господи Исусе, приеми духа ми.
60 И като коленичи, извика със силен глас: Господи, не им считай тоя грях. И като рече това, заспа.

7 Entonces el sumo sacerdote preguntó:
—¿Es esto así?
2 Y él respondió:
—Hermanos y padres, oigan. El Dios de la gloria apareció a nuestro padre Abraham cuando estaba en Mesopotamia, antes que habitase en Harán, 3 y le dijo: “Sal de tu tierra y de tu parentela y vete a la tierra que te mostraré”[a]. 4 Entonces salió de la tierra de los caldeos y habitó en Harán. Después que murió su padre, Dios le trasladó de allá a esta tierra en la cual ustedes habitan ahora[b]. 5 Pero no le dio heredad en ella, ni siquiera para asentar su pie; aunque prometió darla en posesión a él y a su descendencia después de él[c], aun cuando él no tenía hijo. 6 Así Dios le dijo que su descendencia sería extranjera en tierra ajena y que los reducirían a esclavitud y los maltratarían por cuatrocientos años[d]. 7 “Pero yo juzgaré a la nación a la cual sirvan”, dijo Dios, “y después de esto saldrán y me rendirán culto en este lugar”[e]. 8 Dios le dio el pacto de la circuncisión; y así Abraham engendró a Isaac y le circuncidó al octavo día[f]. Lo mismo hizo Isaac a Jacob, y Jacob a los doce patriarcas.
9 »Los patriarcas, movidos por envidia, vendieron a José para Egipto[g]. Pero Dios estaba con él; 10 le libró de todas sus tribulaciones y le dio gracia y sabiduría en la presencia del faraón, rey de Egipto, quien le puso por gobernador sobre Egipto y sobre toda su casa[h]. 11 Entonces vino hambre y gran tribulación en toda la tierra de Egipto y en Canaán, y nuestros padres no hallaban alimentos. 12 Pero al oír Jacob que había trigo en Egipto, envió a nuestros padres la primera vez[i]. 13 La segunda vez, José se dio a conocer a sus hermanos[j]. Así el linaje de José fue dado a conocer al faraón. 14 Y José envió e hizo venir a su padre Jacob y a toda su familia, que eran setenta y cinco personas[k]. 15 Así descendió Jacob a Egipto, donde él y nuestros padres terminaron su vida. 16 Y fueron llevados a Siquem y puestos en el sepulcro que Abraham compró a precio de plata, de los hijos de Hamor en Siquem[l].
17 »Como se acercaba el tiempo de la promesa, la cual Dios había asegurado a Abraham, el pueblo creció y se multiplicó en Egipto 18 hasta que se levantó en Egipto otro rey que no conocía a José[m]. 19 Con astucia este rey se aprovechó de nuestro pueblo y maltrató a nuestros padres, haciéndoles exponer a la muerte a sus bebés para que no sobrevivieran. 20 En aquel tiempo nació Moisés[n] y era agradable a Dios. Él fue criado tres meses en la casa de su padre; 21 pero cuando fue expuesto a la muerte, la hija del faraón lo recogió y lo crió como a hijo suyo[o]. 22 Moisés fue instruido en toda la sabiduría de los egipcios y era poderoso en sus palabras y hechos.
23 »Cuando cumplió cuarenta años, le vino al corazón el visitar a sus hermanos, los hijos de Israel. 24 Al ver que uno era maltratado lo defendió, y matando al egipcio, vengó al oprimido. 25 Pensaba que sus hermanos entenderían que Dios les daría liberación por su mano, pero ellos no lo entendieron. 26 Al día siguiente, él se presentó a unos que estaban peleando y trataba de ponerlos en paz diciendo: “¡Hombres, son hermanos! ¿Por qué se maltratan el uno al otro?”. 27 Entonces, el que maltrataba a su prójimo le rechazó diciendo: ¿Quién te ha puesto por gobernador y juez sobre nosotros? 28 ¿Acaso quieres tú matarme como mataste ayer al egipcio?[p]. 29 Al oír esta palabra, Moisés huyó y vivió exiliado en la tierra de Madián, donde engendró dos hijos[q].
30 »Cuarenta años después, un ángel le apareció en el desierto del monte Sinaí, en la llama de fuego de una zarza[r]. 31 Cuando Moisés lo vio, se asombró de la visión; pero al acercarse para mirar, le vino la voz del Señor: 32 “Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob”. Pero Moisés, temblando, no se atrevía a mirar. 33 Le dijo el Señor: “Quita las sandalias de tus pies, porque el lugar donde estás es tierra santa. 34 He mirado atentamente la aflicción de mi pueblo en Egipto. He oído el gemido de ellos y he descendido para librarlos. Ahora, pues, ven, y te enviaré a Egipto”[s].
35 »A este mismo Moisés, al cual habían rechazado diciendo: ¿Quién te ha puesto por gobernador y juez?[t], Dios le envió por gobernador y redentor, por mano del ángel que le apareció en la zarza. 36 Él los sacó, haciendo prodigios y señales en Egipto, en el mar Rojo y en el desierto por cuarenta años[u]. 37 Este es el mismo Moisés que dijo a los hijos de Israel: Dios les levantará un profeta como yo de entre sus hermanos[v]. 38 Este es aquel que estuvo en la congregación en el desierto con el ángel que le hablaba en el monte Sinaí, y con nuestros padres, y el que recibió palabras de vida para darnos. 39 Nuestros padres no quisieron serle obedientes; más bien, le rechazaron y en sus corazones se volvieron atrás a Egipto, 40 diciendo a Aarón: Haz para nosotros dioses que vayan delante de nosotros; porque a este Moisés que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto, no sabemos qué le habrá acontecido[w]. 41 Entonces, en aquellos días hicieron un becerro y ofrecieron sacrificio al ídolo, y se regocijaban en las obras de sus manos. 42 Pero Dios se apartó de ellos y los entregó a que rindieran culto al ejército del cielo, como está escrito en el libro de los Profetas: ¿Acaso me ofrecieron víctimas y sacrificios en el desierto por cuarenta años, oh casa de Israel? 43 Más bien, llevaron el tabernáculo de Moloc y la estrella de su dios Renfán, las imágenes que hicieron para adorarlas. Por tanto, les transportaré más allá de Babilonia[x].
44 »En el desierto, nuestros padres tenían el tabernáculo del testimonio, como lo había ordenado Dios, quien ordenaba a Moisés que lo hiciera según el modelo que había visto[y]. 45 Habiendo recibido el tabernáculo, nuestros padres, junto con Josué, lo introdujeron en la posesión de las naciones que Dios expulsó de la presencia de nuestros padres, hasta los días de David. 46 Este halló gracia delante de Dios y pidió proveer un tabernáculo para el Dios de Jacob[z]. 47 Pero Salomón le edificó casa.
48 »No obstante, el Altísimo no habita en casas hechas por mano[aa], como dice el profeta:
49 El cielo es mi trono,
y la tierra es el estrado de mis pies. ¿Qué casa me edificarán?,
dice el Señor.
¿Cuál será el lugar de mi reposo?
50 ¿No hizo mi mano todas estas cosas?[ab].
51 »¡Duros de cerviz e incircuncisos de corazón y de oídos! Ustedes resisten siempre al Espíritu Santo. Como sus padres, así también ustedes. 52 ¿A cuál de los profetas no persiguieron sus padres? Y mataron a los que de antemano anunciaron la venida del Justo. Y ahora han venido a ser sus traidores y asesinos. 53 ¡Ustedes que han recibido la ley por disposición de los ángeles, y no la guardaron!
Esteban es apedreado
54 Escuchando estas cosas, se enfurecían en sus corazones y crujían los dientes contra él. 55 Pero Esteban, lleno del Espíritu Santo y puestos los ojos en el cielo, vio la gloria de Dios, y a Jesús que estaba de pie a la diestra de Dios. 56 Y dijo:
—¡He aquí, veo los cielos abiertos y al Hijo del Hombre de pie a la diestra de Dios!
57 Entonces gritaron a gran voz, se taparon los oídos y a una se precipitaron sobre él. 58 Le echaron fuera de la ciudad y le apedrearon. Los testigos dejaron sus vestidos a los pies de un joven que se llamaba Saulo. 59 Y apedreaban a Esteban, mientras él invocaba diciendo:
—¡Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu!
60 Y puesto de rodillas clamó a gran voz:
—¡Señor, no les tomes en cuenta este pecado!
Y habiendo dicho esto, durmió.

Stephen’s Address: The Call of Abraham
7 Then the high priest said, “Are these things so?”
2 And he said, (A)“Brethren and fathers, listen: The (B)God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in (C)Haran, 3 and said to him, (D)‘Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.’ 4 Then (E)he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was (F)dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell. 5 And God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, (G)He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him. 6 But God spoke in this way: (H)that his descendants would dwell in a foreign land, and that they would bring them into (I)bondage and oppress them four hundred years. 7 (J)‘And the nation to whom they will be in bondage I will (K)judge,’ said God, (L)‘and after that they shall come out and serve Me in this place.’ 8 (M)Then He gave him the covenant of circumcision; (N)and so Abraham begot Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; (O)and Isaac begot Jacob, and (P)Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs.
The Patriarchs in Egypt
9 (Q)“And the patriarchs, becoming envious, (R)sold Joseph into Egypt. (S)But God was with him 10 and delivered him out of all his troubles, (T)and gave him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. 11 (U)Now a famine and great [a]trouble came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers found no sustenance. 12 (V)But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first. 13 And the (W)second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to the Pharaoh. 14 (X)Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob and (Y)all his relatives to him, [b]seventy-five people. 15 (Z)So Jacob went down to Egypt; (AA)and he died, he and our fathers. 16 And (AB)they were carried back to Shechem and laid in (AC)the tomb that Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem.
God Delivers Israel by Moses
17 “But when (AD)the time of the promise drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, (AE)the people grew and multiplied in Egypt 18 till another king (AF)arose who did not know Joseph. 19 This man dealt treacherously with our people, and oppressed our forefathers, (AG)making them expose their babies, so that they might not live. 20 (AH)At this time Moses was born, and (AI)was well pleasing to God; and he was brought up in his father’s house for three months. 21 But (AJ)when he was set out, (AK)Pharaoh’s daughter took him away and brought him up as her own son. 22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was (AL)mighty in words and deeds.
23 (AM)“Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel. 24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck down the Egyptian. 25 For he supposed that his brethren would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not understand. 26 And the next day he appeared to two of them as they were fighting, and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brethren; why do you wrong one another?’ 27 But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, (AN)‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? 28 Do you want to kill me as you did the Egyptian yesterday?’ 29 (AO)Then, at this saying, Moses fled and became a dweller in the land of Midian, where he (AP)had two sons.
30 (AQ)“And when forty years had passed, an Angel [c]of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai. 31 When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him, 32 saying, (AR)‘I am the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and dared not look. 33 (AS)‘Then the Lord said to him, “Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. 34 I have surely (AT)seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt; I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will (AU)send you to Egypt.” ’
35 “This Moses whom they rejected, saying, (AV)‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer (AW)by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 (AX)He brought them out, after he had (AY)shown wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, (AZ)and in the Red Sea, (BA)and in the wilderness forty years.
Israel Rebels Against God
37 “This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, (BB)‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. (BC)Him[d] you shall hear.’
38 (BD)“This is he who was in the [e]congregation in the wilderness with (BE)the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, (BF)the one who received the living (BG)oracles[f] to give to us, 39 whom our fathers (BH)would not obey, but rejected. And in their hearts they turned back to Egypt, 40 (BI)saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 41 (BJ)And they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifices to the idol, and (BK)rejoiced in the works of their own hands. 42 Then (BL)God turned and gave them up to worship (BM)the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the Prophets:
(BN)‘Did you offer Me slaughtered animals and sacrifices during forty years in the wilderness,
O house of Israel?
43 You also took up the tabernacle of Moloch,
And the star of your god Remphan,
Images which you made to worship;
And (BO)I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’

44 “Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as He appointed, instructing Moses (BP)to make it according to the pattern that he had seen, 45 (BQ)which our fathers, having received it in turn, also brought with Joshua into the land possessed by the Gentiles, (BR)whom God drove out before the face of our fathers until the (BS)days of David, 46 (BT)who found favor before God and (BU)asked to find a dwelling for the God of Jacob. 47 (BV)But Solomon built Him a house.
48 “However, (BW)the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says:
49 ‘Heaven(BX) is My throne,
And earth is My footstool.
What house will you build for Me? says the Lord,
Or what is the place of My rest?
50 Has My hand not (BY)made all these things?’

51 “You (BZ)stiff-necked[g] and (CA)uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. 52 (CB)Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of (CC)the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, 53 (CD)who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it.”

54 (CE)When they heard these things they were [h]cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. 55 But he, (CF)being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the (CG)glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and said, “Look! 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. Stephen’s Speech to the Sanhedrin
7 Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?”
2 To this he replied: “Brothers and fathers,(A) listen to me! The God of glory(B) appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran.(C) 3 ‘Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’[a](D)
4 “So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.(E) 5 He gave him no inheritance here,(F) not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land,(G) even though at that time Abraham had no child. 6 God spoke to him in this way: ‘For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated.(H) 7 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’[b](I) 8 Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision.(J) And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth.(K) Later Isaac became the father of Jacob,(L) and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.(M)
9 “Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph,(N) they sold him as a slave into Egypt.(O) But God was with him(P) 10 and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.(Q)
11 “Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.(R) 12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our forefathers on their first visit.(S) 13 On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was,(T) and Pharaoh learned about Joseph’s family.(U) 14 After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family,(V) seventy-five in all.(W) 15 Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died.(X) 16 Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money.(Y)
17 “As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt had greatly increased.(Z) 18 Then ‘a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.’[c](AA) 19 He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.(AB)
20 “At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child.[d] For three months he was cared for by his family.(AC) 21 When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.(AD) 22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians(AE) and was powerful in speech and action.
23 “When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. 24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 26 The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’
27 “But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?(AF) 28 Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’[e] 29 When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.(AG)
30 “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:(AH) 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers,(AI) the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’[f] Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.(AJ)
33 “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.(AK) 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’[g](AL)
35 “This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’(AM) He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt(AN) and performed wonders and signs(AO) in Egypt, at the Red Sea(AP) and for forty years in the wilderness.(AQ)
37 “This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’[h](AR) 38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel(AS) who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors;(AT) and he received living words(AU) to pass on to us.(AV)
39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.(AW) 40 They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’[i](AX) 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.(AY) 42 But God turned away from them(AZ) and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars.(BA) This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:
“‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43 You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek
and the star of your god Rephan,
the idols you made to worship.
Therefore I will send you into exile’[j](BB) beyond Babylon.
44 “Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law(BC) with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.(BD) 45 After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them.(BE) It remained in the land until the time of David,(BF) 46 who enjoyed God’s favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.[k](BG) 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.(BH)
48 “However, the Most High(BI) does not live in houses made by human hands.(BJ) As the prophet says:
49 “‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.(BK)
What kind of house will you build for me?
says the Lord.
Or where will my resting place be?
50 Has not my hand made all these things?’[l](BL)
51 “You stiff-necked people!(BM) Your hearts(BN) and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute?(BO) They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him(BP)— 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels(BQ) but have not obeyed it.”
The Stoning of Stephen
54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious(BR) and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,(BS) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.(BT) 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open(BU) and the Son of Man(BV) standing at the right hand of God.”
57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city(BW) and began to stone him.(BX) Meanwhile, the witnesses(BY) laid their coats(BZ) at the feet of a young man named Saul.(CA)
59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”(CB) 60 Then he fell on his knees(CC) and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”(CD) When he had said this, he fell asleep.(CE)

3 And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

12 But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

14 Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.
15 So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

17 But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
18 Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:
21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.
26 And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
27 But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?
29 Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.
31 When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,
32 Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
33 Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.
36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
37 This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.
38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:
39 To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
40 Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
46 Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
47 But Solomon built him an house.
48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
50 Hath not my hand made all these things?
51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.
55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,
58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.
59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
