Îndemn la supunere faţă de Lege

4 Acum, ascultă, Israele, poruncile şi hotărârile pe care vă învăţ. Împliniţi-le ca să trăiţi şi să intraţi în stăpânirea ţării pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul părinţilor voştri, v-a dat-o. 2 Să nu adăugaţi nimic la cele ce vă poruncesc eu şi să nu desfinţaţi nimic dintre ele. Dimpotrivă să păziţi legile Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru, aşa cum vi le dau eu.

3 Aţi fost martori la ceea ce Domnul a făcut din cauza lui Baal-Peor[a]. El a nimicit din mijlocul vostru toţi bărbaţii care l-au urmat pe Baal-Peor, 4 însă voi, cei care aţi stat alipiţi de Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, sunteţi toţi vii astăzi.

5 Iată că v-am învăţat poruncile şi hotărârile aşa cum mi-a poruncit Domnul, Dumnezeul meu, ca astfel să le puteţi împlini în ţara în care veţi intra s-o luaţi în stăpânire. 6 Să le păziţi şi să le împliniţi, fiindcă aceasta va fi înţelepciunea şi discernământul vostru înaintea popoarelor; ele vor auzi despre toate aceste porunci şi vor zice: «Într-adevăr poporul acesta este înţelept şi neamul acesta mare are discernământ!» 7 Căci care neam este aşa de mare, încât să-şi aibă zeii atât de aproape, cum Îl avem noi pe Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, ori de câte ori Îl chemăm? 8 Şi care este neamul acela aşa de mare, încât să fi avut porunci şi hotărâri tot atât de drepte ca şi legea aceasta, pe care eu v-o prezint astăzi?

9 Numai ia seama la tine şi veghează cu luare-aminte asupra sufletului tău ca să nu uiţi lucrurile pe care le-ai văzut cu ochii tăi şi ca ele să nu se depărteze de inima ta în toate zilele vieţii tale. Fă cunoscute aceste lucruri copiilor tăi şi nepoţilor tăi. 10 Adu-ţi aminte de ziua în care ai stat în prezenţa Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, la Horeb, atunci când Domnul mi-a zis: «Strânge poporul la Mine ca să asculte cuvintele Mele şi să înveţe astfel, atât ei, cât şi copiii lor, să se teamă de Mine în toate zilele pe care le vor trăi pe pământ.» 11 Voi v-aţi apropiat şi aţi stat în vecinătatea muntelui. Muntele ardea cu flăcări ce se înălţau până în inima cerurilor. Era întuneric, nori şi negură. 12 Domnul v-a vorbit din mijlocul focului. Voi aţi auzit sunetul cuvintelor Sale, dar nu aţi văzut nici o înfăţişare, ci aţi auzit doar o voce. 13 El v-a vestit legământul Său, Cele Zece Porunci, pe care v-a poruncit să le urmaţi şi pe care le-a scris pe două table[b] de piatră. 14 În vremea aceea, Domnul mi-a poruncit să vă învăţ poruncile şi hotărârile pe care trebuie să le împliniţi în ţara pe care o veţi stăpâni, după ce veţi traversa Iordanul.

Idolatria este interzisă

15 În ziua când Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, v-a vorbit la Horeb, din mijlocul focului, nu aţi văzut nici o înfăţişare; de aceea vegheaţi cu luare-aminte asupra sufletelor voastre, 16 ca nu cumva să vă pervertiţi şi să vă faceţi vreun chip cioplit, reprezentând un idol sau chipul unui bărbat sau al unei femei 17 sau înfăţişarea unui animal de pe pământ sau a unei păsări care zboară prin aer 18 sau chipul vreunei creaturi care mişună pe pământ sau al vreunui peşte care trăieşte în ape. 19 Iar atunci când veţi privi spre cer şi veţi vedea soarele, luna şi stelele, întreaga oştire a cerului, să nu vă lăsaţi îndemnaţi să vă închinaţi înaintea lor şi să le slujiţi, căci acestea sunt lucruri care au fost împărţite de Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, tuturor neamurilor de sub cer. 20 Pe voi însă Domnul v-a luat şi v-a scos din cuptorul de fier, din Egipt, ca să fiţi poporul moştenirii Lui, cum sunteţi astăzi.

21 Domnul s-a mâniat pe mine din cauza voastră şi a jurat că nu voi traversa Iordanul şi nu voi intra în ţara cea bună pe care El are să v-o dea ca moştenire. 22 Deci eu voi muri în ţara aceasta şi nu voi traversa Iordanul, dar voi îl veţi traversa şi veţi lua în stăpânire ţara aceea bună.

23 Aşadar, vegheaţi asupra voastră şi nu uitaţi legământul Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru, pe care l-a încheiat cu voi. Să nu vă faceţi vreun idol sau orice alt fel de chip pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, v-a interzis să-l faceţi. 24 Căci Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, este un foc mistuitor şi un Dumnezeu gelos.

25 Când veţi avea copii şi nepoţi şi veţi locui de mult timp în ţară, dacă vă veţi perverti şi vă veţi face vreun idol sau orice alt fel de chip, dacă veţi face ce este rău în ochii Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru, ca să-L mâniaţi, 26 chem astăzi cerul şi pământul ca martori împotriva voastră, că veţi fi nimiciţi repede din ţara pe care o veţi lua în stăpânire după ce veţi traversa Iordanul. Nu veţi trăi multe zile, ci veţi fi nimiciţi. 27 El vă va împrăştia printre popoare şi nu veţi rămâne decât un mic număr de oameni acolo, între neamurile la care Domnul vă va conduce. 28 Acolo veţi sluji unor zei făcuţi de mâna omului, din lemn şi din piatră, care nu pot nici să vadă, nici să mănânce, nici să audă şi nici să miroasă. 29 Dar dacă de acolo Îl veţi căuta pe Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, Îl veţi găsi, dacă Îl veţi căuta din toată inima voastră şi din tot sufletul vostru. 30 În strâmtorarea voastră, după ce vi se vor fi întâmplat toate aceste lucruri, în zilele de pe urmă, vă veţi întoarce la Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, şi-I veţi asculta glasul. 31 Căci Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, este un Dumnezeu îndurător, Care nu vă va părăsi şi nu vă va distruge. El nu va uita legământul pe care l-a încheiat, prin jurământ, cu strămoşii voştri.

Nimeni nu este ca Domnul

32 Întrebaţi despre vremurile străvechi, care au fost înainte de zilele voastre, începând cu ziua în care Dumnezeu

l-a creat pe om pe pământ şi cercetaţi cerul de la un capăt la celălalt. S-a întâmplat vreodată un lucru atât de mare ca acesta sau s-a auzit vreodată aşa ceva? 33 A existat vreodată vreun popor care să fi auzit glasul lui Dumnezeu[c], vorbindu-i din mijlocul focului, cum l-aţi auzit voi şi să fi rămas în viaţă? 34 A existat vreodată vreun dumnezeu care să ia un neam din mijlocul altui neam, prin încercări, prin semne şi minuni, prin război, cu mână puternică, cu braţ întins şi cu mare teroare, aşa cum a făcut cu voi Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, în Egipt, înaintea ochilor voştri?

35 Ţie ţi-au fost arătate aceste lucruri ca să ştii că Domnul este Dumnezeu şi că nu este altul în afară de El. 36 Din cer te-a făcut să auzi vocea Lui, ca să te disciplineze. Pe pământ ţi-a arătat focul Lui cel mare, iar tu ai ascultat cuvintele Lui din mijlocul focului. 37 El i-a iubit pe strămoşii tăi şi de aceea a ales sămânţa[d] lor după ei. Apoi te-a scos din Egipt prin prezenţa şi puterea Lui cea mare. 38 A izgonit dinaintea ta neamuri mari şi puternice ca să intri în ţara pe care ţi-a dat-o ca moştenire, după cum vezi astăzi.

39 Să ştii astăzi şi să-ţi pui la inimă faptul că Domnul este Dumnezeu sus în cer şi jos pe pământ şi că nu este altul în afară de El. 40 Păzeşte deci poruncile şi legile Lui, pe care eu ţi le dau astăzi, ca să-ţi meargă bine atât ţie, cât şi urmaşilor tăi şi astfel să trăieşti multe zile în ţara pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, ţi-o dă pentru totdeauna.“

Cetăţi de scăpare

41 Atunci Moise a ales trei cetăţi la răsărit de Iordan, 42 ca să slujească de refugiu ucigaşului care l-a omorât fără voie pe semenul său, fără să-l fi urât mai dinainte. El va putea să se refugieze într-una din aceste cetăţi pentru a-şi salva viaţa. 43 Aceste cetăţi erau: Beţer, în regiunea de podiş a rubeniţilor; Ramot, în Ghiladul gadiţilor şi Golan, în Başanul manasiţilor.

Recapitularea Legii de la Horeb şi a Decalogului

44 Iată care este Legea pe care i-a dat-o Moise lui Israel. 45 Acestea sunt mărturiile, poruncile şi hotărârile pe care Moise le-a dat israeliţilor după ce au ieşit din Egipt, 46 dincolo de Iordan, în vale, faţă în faţă cu Bet-Peor, în ţara lui Sihon, regele amoriţilor, care locuia în Heşbon şi a fost învins de Moise şi de Israel după ieşirea lor din Egipt. 47 Ei au luat în stăpânire ţara lui şi ţara lui Og, regele Başanului, cei doi regi amoriţi, care erau la răsărit de Iordan. 48 Ţara lor se întindea de la Aroer, care este pe malul uedului[e] Arnon, până la muntele Sirion[f] (acesta este Hermonul) 49 şi cuprindea toată Araba[g] de la răsărit de Iordan până la Marea Arabei[h], lângă poalele muntelui Pisga.

9 Само внимавай на себе си и пази добре душата си, да не би да забравиш делата, които очите ти са видели, и да не би да се изгубят от сърцето ти, през всичките дни на живота ти; но предавай ги на чадата си и на внуците си;

10 <предавай им за> деня, в който ти застана пред Господа твоя Бог на Хорив, когато Господ ми каза: Събери Ми людете, и ще ги направя да чуят думите Ми, за да се научат да се боят <от> Мене през всичкото време догдето живеят на земята, и те да учат чадата си <на това>.

11 Вие се приближихте и застанахте под планината; и планината гореше в огън до сред небето, и имаше тъмнина, облак и мрак.

26 днес викам небето и земята да свидетелствуват против вас, че непременно скоро ще изчезнете от земята, за превземането на която вие преминавате Иордан; няма да живеете дълго време в нея, а съвсем ще бъдете изтребени.

27 Господ ще ви разпръсне между племената, и ще останете малочислени между ония народи, всред които Господ ще ви отведе.

28 Там ще служите на богове, дело на човешки ръце, на дърво и камък, които нито виждат нито чуват, нито ядат нито миришат.

29 Но ако от там потърсите Господа твоя Бог, всеки <от вас> ще го намери, ако го потърси с цялото си сърце и с цялата си душа.

30 Когато се намериш в скръб, и всичко това те постигне, ако най-после {Еврейски: в последните дни.} се обърнеш към Господа твоя Бог и послушаш гласа Му,

31 то, понеже Господ твоят Бог е Бог милостив, Той няма да те остави, нито ще те изтреби, нито ще забрави завета, за който се е клел на бащите ти.

32 Защото попитай сега за миналите времена, които бяха преди тебе, от деня когато Бог създаде човека на земята, и <попитай> от единия край на небето до другия: ставало ли е такова нещо, като това велико дело, или чувало ли се е подобно на него?

33 Люде чули ли са някога Божия глас да говори изсред огън, както ти си чул, и да останат живи?

34 Или предприел ли е Бог да дойде и вземе за себе си народ изсред <друг> народ, чрез изпитни, знамения и чудеса, и чрез бой, чрез силна ръка, чрез издигната мишца, и чрез големи ужаси, според всичко, което Господ вашият Бог е сторил за вас в Египет пред очите ви?

35 На тебе се даде да видиш това, за да познаеш, че Иеова, Той е Бог, и няма друг освен Него.

Obedience Commanded

4 Now, Israel, hear the decrees(A) and laws I am about to teach(B) you. Follow them so that you may live(C) and may go in and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2 Do not add(D) to what I command you and do not subtract(E) from it, but keep(F) the commands(G) of the Lord your God that I give you.

3 You saw with your own eyes what the Lord did at Baal Peor.(H) The Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, 4 but all of you who held fast to the Lord your God are still alive today.

5 See, I have taught(I) you decrees and laws(J) as the Lord my God commanded(K) me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering(L) to take possession of it. 6 Observe(M) them carefully, for this will show your wisdom(N) and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”(O) 7 What other nation is so great(P) as to have their gods near(Q) them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws(R) as this body of laws I am setting before you today?

9 Only be careful,(S) and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach(T) them to your children(U) and to their children after them. 10 Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb,(V) when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn(W) to revere(X) me as long as they live in the land(Y) and may teach(Z) them to their children.” 11 You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain(AA) while it blazed with fire(AB) to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.(AC) 12 Then the Lord spoke(AD) to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form;(AE) there was only a voice.(AF) 13 He declared to you his covenant,(AG) the Ten Commandments,(AH) which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets. 14 And the Lord directed me at that time to teach you the decrees and laws(AI) you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.

Idolatry Forbidden

15 You saw no form(AJ) of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb(AK) out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully,(AL) 16 so that you do not become corrupt(AM) and make for yourselves an idol,(AN) an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air,(AO) 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun,(AP) the moon and the stars(AQ)—all the heavenly array(AR)—do not be enticed(AS) into bowing down to them and worshiping(AT) things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. 20 But as for you, the Lord took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace,(AU) out of Egypt,(AV) to be the people of his inheritance,(AW) as you now are.

21 The Lord was angry with me(AX) because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance. 22 I will die in this land;(AY) I will not cross the Jordan; but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land.(AZ) 23 Be careful not to forget the covenant(BA) of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol(BB) in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. 24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire,(BC) a jealous God.(BD)

25 After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time—if you then become corrupt(BE) and make any kind of idol,(BF) doing evil(BG) in the eyes of the Lord your God and arousing his anger, 26 I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses(BH) against you(BI) this day that you will quickly perish(BJ) from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. 27 The Lord will scatter(BK) you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive(BL) among the nations to which the Lord will drive you. 28 There you will worship man-made gods(BM) of wood and stone,(BN) which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.(BO) 29 But if from there you seek(BP) the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart(BQ) and with all your soul.(BR) 30 When you are in distress(BS) and all these things have happened to you, then in later days(BT) you will return(BU) to the Lord your God and obey him. 31 For the Lord your God is a merciful(BV) God; he will not abandon(BW) or destroy(BX) you or forget(BY) the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.

The Lord Is God

32 Ask(BZ) now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth;(CA) ask from one end of the heavens to the other.(CB) Has anything so great(CC) as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? 33 Has any other people heard the voice of God[a] speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived?(CD) 34 Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation,(CE) by testings,(CF) by signs(CG) and wonders,(CH) by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,(CI) or by great and awesome deeds,(CJ) like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?

35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other.(CK) 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice(CL) to discipline(CM) you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. 37 Because he loved(CN) your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength,(CO) 38 to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance,(CP) as it is today.

39 Acknowledge(CQ) and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.(CR) 40 Keep(CS) his decrees and commands,(CT) which I am giving you today, so that it may go well(CU) with you and your children after you and that you may live long(CV) in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.

Cities of Refuge(CW)

41 Then Moses set aside three cities east of the Jordan, 42 to which anyone who had killed a person could flee if they had unintentionally(CX) killed a neighbor without malice aforethought. They could flee into one of these cities and save their life. 43 The cities were these: Bezer in the wilderness plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth(CY) in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.

Introduction to the Law

44 This is the law Moses set before the Israelites. 45 These are the stipulations, decrees and laws Moses gave them when they came out of Egypt 46 and were in the valley near Beth Peor east of the Jordan, in the land of Sihon(CZ) king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites as they came out of Egypt. 47 They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan. 48 This land extended from Aroer(DA) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge to Mount Sirion[b](DB) (that is, Hermon(DC)), 49 and included all the Arabah east of the Jordan, as far as the Dead Sea,[c] below the slopes of Pisgah.

Introduction to the Stipulations

4 “Now, Israel, listen to the rules and to the regulations that I am teaching you to do, in order that you may live and you may go in and you may take possession of the land that Yahweh, the God of your ancestors,[a] is giving to you. 2 You must not add to the word that I am commanding you, and you shall not take away from it in order to keep[b] the commands of Yahweh your God that I am commanding you to observe. 3 Your eyes have seen[c] what Yahweh did with[d] the case of Baal Peor, for each[e] man that followed after Baal Peor Yahweh your God destroyed from your midst. 4 But you, the ones holding fast to Yahweh your God, are all alive today.[f]

5 See, I now teach[g] you rules and regulations just as Yahweh my God has commanded me, to observe them just so in the midst of the land where you are going, to take possession of it. 6 And you must observe them diligently,[h] for that is your wisdom and your insight before the eyes of the people, who will hear all of these rules, and they will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people.’ 7 For what great nation has for it a god near to it as Yahweh our God, whenever[i] we call upon him? 8 And what other great nation has for it[j] just rules and regulations just like[k] this whole[l] law that I am setting before[m] you today?[n]

9 “However, take care[o] for yourself and watch your inner self[p] closely, so that you do not forget the things that your eyes have seen, so that they do not slip from your mind all the days of your life; and you shall make them known to your children and to your grandchildren.[q] 10 Remember the day that you stood before[r] Yahweh your God at Horeb when Yahweh said to me,[s] ‘Summon for me the people so that I can tell them my words, that they may learn to fear me all of the days they are alive on the earth and so that they may teach their children.’ 11 And so you came near, and you stood under the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire up to the heart of the heaven, dark with a very thick cloud.[t] 12 And Yahweh spoke to you from the midst of the fire; you heard[u] a sound of words, but you did not see[v] a form—only a voice. 13 And he declared to you his covenant, the Ten Commandments,[w] which he charged you to observe,[x] and he wrote them on the two tablets of stone. 14 And Yahweh charged me at that time to teach you rules and regulations for your observation of them[y] in the land that you are about to cross into[z] to take possession of it.

15 “So you must be very careful for yourselves,[aa] because you did not see[ab] any form on the day Yahweh spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire, 16 so that you do not ruin yourselves[ac] and make for yourselves a divine image in a form of any image, a replica of male or female, 17 a replica of any animal that is upon the earth, a replica of any winged bird that flies in the air, 18 a replica of any creeping thing on the ground, a replica of any fish that is in the water below[ad] the earth. 19 And do this so that you do not lift[ae] your eyes toward heaven and observe[af] the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of the heaven, and be led astray and bow down to them and serve them, things that Yahweh your God has allotted to all of the peoples under all of the heaven. 20 But Yahweh has taken you and brought you out from the furnace of iron, from Egypt, to be a people of inheritance to[ag] him, as it is this day.[ah]

21 “And Yahweh was angry with me because of you,[ai] and he swore that I would not cross the Jordan[aj] and that I would not go to the good land[ak] that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance. 22 For I am going to die in this land; I am not going to cross the Jordan, but you are going to cross, and you are going to take possession of this good land. 23 Watch out for yourselves so that you do not forget the covenant of Yahweh your God that he had made[al] with you and make for yourselves a divine image of the form of anything that Yahweh your God has forbidden,[am] 24 for Yahweh your God is a devouring fire, a jealous[an] God.

25 “When you have had children and grandchildren[ao] and you have grown old in the land and you act corruptly and you make a divine image of the form of anything and you do evil in the eyes of Yahweh your God, thus provoking him to anger, 26 I call[ap] to witness against you today the heaven and the earth, that you will perish soon and completely from the land that you are crossing the Jordan into it to take possession of it; you will not live long on it,[aq] but you will be completely destroyed. 27 And Yahweh will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number[ar] among the nations to where Yahweh will lead you.[as] 28 And you will there serve gods made by human hands,[at] of wood and stone, gods that cannot see and cannot hear and cannot eat and cannot smell. 29 But from there you shall seek Yahweh your God and will find him, if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.[au] 30 In your distress[av] when[aw] all these things have found you in the latter days,[ax] then[ay] you will return to Yahweh your God, and you will listen to his voice. 31 For Yahweh your God is a compassionate God; he will not abandon you,[az] and he will not destroy you, and he will not forget the covenant of your ancestors[ba] that he swore to them.

32 “Yes, ask, please, about former days that preceded you[bb] from the day that God created humankind on the earth; ask even from one end of the heaven up to the other end of heaven whether anything ever happened[bc] like this great thing or whether anything like it was ever heard.[bd] 33 Has a people ever heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, just as you heard it, and lived? 34 Or has a god ever attempted to go to take for himself[be] a nation from the midst of a nation, using trials and signs and wonders and war, with an outstretched arm and with great and awesome deeds, like all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 You yourselves[bf] were shown this wonder in order for you to acknowledge that Yahweh is the God;[bg] there is no other God besides him.[bh] 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice to teach you, and on the earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from the midst of the fire. 37 And because he loved your ancestors[bi] he chose their descendants[bj] after them. And he brought you forth from Egypt with his own presence,[bk] by his great strength, 38 to drive out nations greater and more numerous than you from before you,[bl] to bring you and to give to you their land as an inheritance, as it is this day. 39 So you shall acknowledge today,[bm] and you must call to mind[bn] that Yahweh is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. There is no other God. 40 And you shall keep his rules and his commandments that I am commanding you today,[bo] so that it may go well[bp] for you and for your children[bq] after you, and so that you may remain a long time[br] on the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you during all of those days.”

41 Then Moses set apart three cities on the other side of the Jordan,[bs] toward the east,[bt] 42 in order for a manslayer[bu] to flee there who has killed his neighbor without intent[bv] and was not hating him previously,[bw] and so he could flee to one of these cities and be safe.[bx] 43 He set apart Bezer in the wilderness[by] in the land of the plateau of the Reubenites;[bz] Ramoth in Gilead of the Gadites,[ca] and Golan in Bashan of the Manassites.[cb]

44 Now this is the law[cc] that Moses set before[cd] the Israelites;[ce] 45 these are the legal provisions and the rules and the regulations that Moses spoke to the Israelites[cf] when they left Egypt,[cg] 46 beyond the Jordan in the valley opposite Beth Peor in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites,[ch] who was reigning in Heshbon and whom Moses and the Israelites[ci] defeated when they came out of Egypt.[cj] 47 And so they took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites[ck] who were beyond the Jordan, eastward,[cl] 48 from Aroer, which is on the bank of the wadi[cm] of Arnon and as far as Mount Sirion; that is, Hermon, 49 and all of the Arabah[cn] beyond the Jordan, eastward, and as far as the Sea of the Arabah[co] under the slopes of Pisgah.
