Ценность Закона Всевышнего
4 Слушайте, исраильтяне, установления и законы, которым я учу вас. Следуйте им, чтобы жить, чтобы войти и завладеть землёй, которую Вечный, Бог ваших предков, даёт вам. 2 Не прибавляйте и не убавляйте ничего к тому, что я повелеваю вам. Исполняйте повеления Вечного, вашего Бога, которые я даю вам.
3 Вы своими глазами видели всё, что Вечный сделал в Баал-Пеоре. Вечный, ваш Бог, истребил среди вас всех, кто поклонялся идолу Баал-Пеору, 4 но все те, кто остались верны Вечному, вашему Богу, по-прежнему живы и сегодня.[a]
5 Смотрите, я научил вас установлениям и законам, как и повелел мне Вечный, мой Бог, чтобы вы следовали им в земле, куда вы вступаете, чтобы завладеть ею. 6 Соблюдайте их тщательно, чтобы доказать свою мудрость и рассудительность народам, которые услышат об этих установлениях и скажут: «Конечно, это великий народ, мудрый и разумный». 7 Какой ещё народ столь велик, что его боги были близки к нему так, как Вечный, наш Бог, близок к нам, когда бы мы ни молились Ему? 8 И какой ещё народ столь велик, что у него были такие же справедливые установления и законы, как те, которые я даю вам сегодня?
9 Только будьте осторожны и внимательно следите за собой, чтобы не забыть то, что видели ваши глаза, и не дать ускользнуть воспоминаниям из вашего сердца, пока вы живы. Запрет идолопоклонства
15 Итак, твёрдо помните, что вы не видели никакого образа в тот день, когда Вечный говорил с вами у горы Синай из огня, 16 чтобы не развратиться и не сделать себе идола – образ в какой-либо форме, изображающий мужчину или женщину. 17 Или какое-либо животное на земле, какую-нибудь птицу, летающую под небесами, 18 какое-нибудь пресмыкающееся по земле, или рыбу в водах. 19 А когда вы посмотрите на небо и увидите солнце, луну и звёзды – всё небесное многообразие, то не соблазняйтесь: не поклоняйтесь и не служите тому, что Вечный, ваш Бог, уделил всем народам под небом. 20 Но что до вас – Вечный взял вас и вынес из плавильной печи, из Египта, чтобы вы были народом Его наследия, как сейчас.
21 Вечный разгневался на меня из-за вас и поклялся, что я не перейду через Иордан и не войду в благодатную землю, которую Вечный, ваш Бог, даёт вам в наследие. 22 Я умру в этой земле; я не перейду через Иордан, но вы перейдёте и завладеете благодатной землёй. 23 Берегитесь, чтобы не забыть священное соглашение Вечного, вашего Бога, которое Он заключил с вами. 25 У вас появятся дети и внуки, вы проживёте на земле долгое время, но если потом вы развратитесь и сделаете какого-нибудь идола, совершая зло в глазах Вечного, вашего Бога, и вызывая Его гнев, – 26 я призываю сегодня в свидетели против вас небо и землю, – вы будете скоро истреблены из земли, куда вы переходите через Иордан, чтобы завладеть ею. Вы не долго проживёте там, и непременно будете уничтожены. 27 Вечный рассеет вас между народами, и лишь немногие выживут среди народов, к которым Вечный прогонит вас. 28 Там вы будете служить богам, сделанным человеком из дерева и камня, которые не могут ни видеть, ни слышать, ни есть, ни чуять запах. 29 Но там-то вы и начнёте искать Вечного, вашего Бога, и найдёте Его, если будете искать всем сердцем и всей душой. 30 Когда вас постигнет скорбь, и всё это случится с вами, вы вернётесь к Вечному, вашему Богу, и будете слушаться Его. 31 Ведь Вечный, ваш Бог, – это милостивый Бог; Он не оставит и не погубит вас и не забудет священное соглашение с вашими предками, которое Он скрепил клятвой.
Вечный – единственный Бог
32 Спросите о прежних днях, которые были задолго до вас, с того дня, когда Всевышний сотворил на земле человека; спросите от края до края небес. Случалось ли что-нибудь подобное этому великому делу, и разве слышали когда-нибудь о чём-то подобном? 33 Разве слышал какой-нибудь другой народ голос Бога, говорящего из огня, как слышали вы, и остался жив? 34 Разве когда-нибудь пробовал какой-нибудь бог взять себе народ из другого народа – испытаниями, знамениями и чудесами, войной, могучей и простёртой рукой, великими и ужасными подвигами, как сделал это для вас Вечный, ваш Бог, в Египте у вас на глазах?
35 Вам было явлено это, чтобы вы знали, что Вечный – это Бог, и нет другого Бога, кроме Него. 36 Он дал вам услышать Свой голос с неба, чтобы наставить вас. На земле Он показал вам Свой великий огонь, и вы слышали Его слова из огня. 37 Он полюбил ваших предков и избрал их потомков, Он Сам вывел вас из Египта[d] Своей великой силой, 38 чтобы прогнать от вас народы, которые многочисленнее и сильнее, и привести вас в их землю, отдав её вам в наследие, как это и есть сегодня.

4 «Итак, Израиль, слушай законы и заповеди, которым я учу тебя. Повинуйся им и будешь жить, и тогда сможешь пойти завладеть землёй, которую даёт тебе Господь, Бог твоих предков. 2 Ничего не прибавляй к тому, что я заповедаю тебе, и ничего не убавляй, повинуйся заповедям Господа, Бога твоего, которые я дал тебе.
3 Ты видел, что Господь сделал в Ваал-Фегоре: Господь, Бог твой, истребил всех в твоём народе, кто поклонялся лжебогу Ваалу, 4 те же, кто остался верен Господу, Богу вашему, живы и по сей день.
5 Я научил вас законам и постановлениям, заповеданным мне Господом, Богом моим, научил вас этим законам, чтобы вы соблюдали их на земле, на которую собираетесь вступить, чтобы завладеть ею. 6 Соблюдайте неукоснительно эти законы, и это докажет вашу мудрость и рассудительность другим народам, которые, услышав об этих законах, скажут: „Воистину мудр и рассудителен этот великий народ”.

11 Вы приблизились и встали у подножия горы, и вспыхнула гора огнём, поднявшимся до небес, и повисли чёрные густые тучи и тьма. 12 Господь обратился к вам из огня, вы слышали только голос, а образа не видели. 13 Он объявил вам о Своём соглашении, даровал вам десять заповедей и повелел следовать им, и записал законы Соглашения на двух каменных скрижалях[a]. 14 Господь велел мне тогда научить вас другим законам и предписаниям, которым вы должны следовать на той земле, которой завладеете и на которой будете жить.
15 В тот день, когда Господь из огня говорил с вами на горе Хорив, вы не видели Его, у Бога не было образа. 16 Берегитесь! Не грешите и не губите себя, делая лжебогов и изваяния по образу живых существ, не делайте идолов, изображающих мужчину или женщину. 17 Не создавайте идола, изображающего земное животное или птицу, летающую в небесах. 18 Не делайте идола, похожего на ползающую по земле тварь или на морскую рыбу. 19 Будьте осторожны, смотря на небо, солнце, луну и все звёзды в небе! Не поддавайтесь искушению поклоняться и служить им, потому что Господь, Бог ваш, позволил другим народам это поклонение. 20 Вас же Господь вывел из Египта и сделал Своим святым народом, словно Своей рукой Он вывел вас из огня горячей печи, где люди плавят железо. И теперь вы—Его народ!
21 По вашей вине Господь разгневался на меня и поклялся, что я не перейду реку Иордан и не войду в благодатную землю, которую Господь, Бог ваш, отдаёт вам. 22 И потому я должен умереть здесь, на этой земле, не перейдя Иордан. Вы же вскоре перейдёте через реку, завладеете этой доброй землёй и будете там жить. 23 Однако в этой новой земле берегитесь, чтобы не забыть соглашение, которое Господь, Бог ваш, заключил с вами. 25 Вы будете жить в стране долгое время, там у вас будут дети и внуки, там вы состаритесь, но потом погубите свою жизнь: сотворите всякого рода идолов и тем вызовете великий гнев Божий! 26 И поэтому я сейчас предупреждаю вас: пусть будут мне свидетелями небо и земля, что если вы сотворите такое зло, то будете тотчас же уничтожены! Сейчас вы переходите Иордан, чтобы захватить эту землю, но если сделаете себе идолов, то недолго там проживёте! Вы будете полностью уничтожены! 27 Господь рассеет вас по всем народам, и лишь немногие из вас останутся в живых и отправятся в те страны, куда Господь пошлёт вас, 28 и там вы будете служить богам, сделанным человеческими руками из дерева и камня, которые не видят, не слышат, не едят и не чувствуют запахов! 29 Но в этих чужих странах вы будете искать Господа, Бога вашего, и если будете искать Его всем сердцем и всей душой, то найдёте! 30 Когда вы окажетесь в беде, и всё это случится с вами, то возвратитесь к Господу, Богу вашему, и будете повиноваться Ему. 31 Господь, Бог ваш, милосердный Бог! Он вас там не оставит, не уничтожит полностью и не забудет о соглашении, заключённом с вашими предками!»
Великие свершения Божьи
32 «Разве случалось когда столь великое? Никогда! Посмотрите на прошлое, подумайте обо всём, что произошло ещё до вашего рождения, с того самого времени, когда Бог создал на земле людей, посмотрите на всё то, что происходило на свете. Разве кто-нибудь когда-либо слышал о столь великих событиях? 33 Вы же, люди, слышали, как Бог говорил с вами из огня, и до сих пор живы! Разве такое случалось с кем-нибудь ещё?! 34 И разве когда-нибудь какой-либо другой бог пытался взять себе народ из другого народа?! Вы же видели сами, что Господь, Бог ваш, свершил эти чудесные деяния, явив вам Свою мощь и силу! Вы видели, какие бедствия постигли народ, видели чудеса и знамения, видели войну и ужасы. 35 Господь явил вам всё это, чтобы вы знали, что Он—Бог. Нет Бога подобного Ему! 36 Господь дал вам услышать с небес голос Свой, чтобы научить вас, позволил вам увидеть на земле великий огонь Свой и говорил с вами из огня.
37 Господь возлюбил ваших предков, потому и избрал вас, их потомков, и вывел вас из Египта. Господь был с вами и вывел вас оттуда Своей великой силой. 38 Когда же вы двинулись вперёд, Господь изгнал народы, которые были сильнее и могущественнее вас, и отдал вам их землю, чтобы вы на ней жили. Он и сегодня продолжает это делать. 39 Так помните же, что Господь есть Бог в небесах и на земле! Нет бога, кроме Него! 40 Так следуйте Его законам и заповедям, которые я даю вам сегодня, чтобы жилось хорошо и вам, и детям вашим после вас, и вы долго будете процветать на земле, которую Бог даёт вам. Obedience Commanded
4 Now, Israel, hear the decrees(A) and laws I am about to teach(B) you. Follow them so that you may live(C) and may go in and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2 Do not add(D) to what I command you and do not subtract(E) from it, but keep(F) the commands(G) of the Lord your God that I give you.
3 You saw with your own eyes what the Lord did at Baal Peor.(H) The Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, 4 but all of you who held fast to the Lord your God are still alive today.
5 See, I have taught(I) you decrees and laws(J) as the Lord my God commanded(K) me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering(L) to take possession of it. 6 Observe(M) them carefully, for this will show your wisdom(N) and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”(O) 7 What other nation is so great(P) as to have their gods near(Q) them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws(R) as this body of laws I am setting before you today?
9 Only be careful,(S) and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach(T) them to your children(U) and to their children after them. 10 Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb,(V) when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn(W) to revere(X) me as long as they live in the land(Y) and may teach(Z) them to their children.” 11 You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain(AA) while it blazed with fire(AB) to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.(AC) 12 Then the Lord spoke(AD) to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form;(AE) there was only a voice.(AF) 13 He declared to you his covenant,(AG) the Ten Commandments,(AH) which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets. 14 And the Lord directed me at that time to teach you the decrees and laws(AI) you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.
Idolatry Forbidden
15 You saw no form(AJ) of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb(AK) out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully,(AL) 16 so that you do not become corrupt(AM) and make for yourselves an idol,(AN) an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air,(AO) 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun,(AP) the moon and the stars(AQ)—all the heavenly array(AR)—do not be enticed(AS) into bowing down to them and worshiping(AT) things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. 20 But as for you, the Lord took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace,(AU) out of Egypt,(AV) to be the people of his inheritance,(AW) as you now are.
21 The Lord was angry with me(AX) because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance. 22 I will die in this land;(AY) I will not cross the Jordan; but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land.(AZ) 23 Be careful not to forget the covenant(BA) of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol(BB) in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. 24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire,(BC) a jealous God.(BD)
25 After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time—if you then become corrupt(BE) and make any kind of idol,(BF) doing evil(BG) in the eyes of the Lord your God and arousing his anger, 26 I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses(BH) against you(BI) this day that you will quickly perish(BJ) from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. 27 The Lord will scatter(BK) you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive(BL) among the nations to which the Lord will drive you. 28 There you will worship man-made gods(BM) of wood and stone,(BN) which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.(BO) 29 But if from there you seek(BP) the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart(BQ) and with all your soul.(BR) 30 When you are in distress(BS) and all these things have happened to you, then in later days(BT) you will return(BU) to the Lord your God and obey him. 31 For the Lord your God is a merciful(BV) God; he will not abandon(BW) or destroy(BX) you or forget(BY) the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.
The Lord Is God
32 Ask(BZ) now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth;(CA) ask from one end of the heavens to the other.(CB) Has anything so great(CC) as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? 33 Has any other people heard the voice of God[a] speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived?(CD) 34 Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation,(CE) by testings,(CF) by signs(CG) and wonders,(CH) by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,(CI) or by great and awesome deeds,(CJ) like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?
35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other.(CK) 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice(CL) to discipline(CM) you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. 37 Because he loved(CN) your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength,(CO) 38 to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance,(CP) as it is today.
39 Acknowledge(CQ) and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.(CR) 40 Keep(CS) his decrees and commands,(CT) which I am giving you today, so that it may go well(CU) with you and your children after you and that you may live long(CV) in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.
Cities of Refuge(CW)
41 Then Moses set aside three cities east of the Jordan, 42 to which anyone who had killed a person could flee if they had unintentionally(CX) killed a neighbor without malice aforethought. They could flee into one of these cities and save their life. 43 The cities were these: Bezer in the wilderness plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth(CY) in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.
Introduction to the Law
44 This is the law Moses set before the Israelites. 45 These are the stipulations, decrees and laws Moses gave them when they came out of Egypt 46 and were in the valley near Beth Peor east of the Jordan, in the land of Sihon(CZ) king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites as they came out of Egypt. 47 They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan. 48 This land extended from Aroer(DA) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge to Mount Sirion[b](DB) (that is, Hermon(DC)), 49 and included all the Arabah east of the Jordan, as far as the Dead Sea,[c] below the slopes of Pisgah.

Advantages of Fidelity. 1 Now therefore, Israel, hear the statutes and ordinances I am teaching you to observe, that you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land which the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.(A) 2 In your observance of the commandments of the Lord, your God,(B) which I am commanding you, you shall not add to what I command you nor subtract from it. 3 You have seen with your own eyes what the Lord did at Baal-peor:(C) the Lord, your God, destroyed from your midst everyone who followed the Baal of Peor; 4 but you, who held fast to the Lord, your God, are all alive today. 5 See, I am teaching you the statutes and ordinances as the Lord, my God, has commanded me, that you may observe them in the land you are entering to possess. 6 Observe them carefully, for this is your wisdom and discernment in the sight of the peoples, who will hear of all these statutes and say, “This great nation is truly a wise and discerning people.”(D) 7 (E)For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the Lord, our God, is to us whenever we call upon him? 8 Or what great nation has statutes and ordinances that are as just as this whole law which I am setting before you today?(F)
Revelation at Horeb. 9 However, be on your guard and be very careful not to forget the things your own eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your heart as long as you live, but make them known to your children(G) and to your children’s children, 10 that day you stood before the Lord, your God, at Horeb, when the Lord said to me: Assemble the people for me, that I may let them hear my words, that they may learn to fear[a] me as long as they live in the land and may so teach their children. 11 (H)You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while the mountain blazed to the heart of the heavens with fire and was enveloped in a dense black cloud. 12 Then the Lord spoke to you from the midst of the fire.(I) You heard the sound of the words, but saw no form; there was only a voice. 13 He proclaimed to you his covenant, which he commanded you to keep: the ten words,[b] which he wrote on two stone tablets.(J) 14 At that time the Lord charged me to teach you the statutes and ordinances for you to observe in the land you are about to cross into and possess.
Danger of Idolatry. 15 Because you saw no form at all on the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire, be strictly on your guard 16 not to act corruptly by fashioning an idol for yourselves to represent any figure, whether it be the form of a man or of a woman,(K) 17 the form of any animal on the earth, the form of any bird that flies in the sky, 18 the form of anything that crawls on the ground, or the form of any fish in the waters under the earth. 19 And when you look up to the heavens and behold the sun or the moon or the stars, the whole heavenly host, do not be led astray into bowing down to them and serving them.(L) These the Lord, your God, has apportioned to all the other nations under the heavens; 20 but you the Lord has taken and led out of that iron foundry, Egypt, that you might be his people, his heritage, as you are today.(M) 21 But the Lord was angry with me on your account(N) and swore that I should not cross the Jordan nor enter the good land which the Lord, your God, is giving you as a heritage. 22 I myself shall die in this country; I shall not cross the Jordan; but you are going to cross over and take possession of that good land.(O) 23 Be careful, therefore, lest you forget the covenant which the Lord, your God, has made with you, and fashion for yourselves against his command an idol in any form whatsoever.(P) 24 For the Lord, your God, is a consuming fire, a jealous God.[c](Q)
God’s Fidelity and Love. 25 (R)When you have children and children’s children, and have grown old in the land, should you then act corruptly by fashioning an idol in the form of anything, and by this evil done in his sight provoke the Lord, your God, 26 I call heaven and earth this day to witness against you, that you shall all quickly perish from the land which you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You shall not live in it for any length of time but shall be utterly wiped out.(S) 27 The Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and there shall remain but a handful of you among the nations to which the Lord will drive you. 28 There you shall serve gods that are works of human hands, of wood and stone, gods which can neither see nor hear, neither eat nor smell.(T) 29 Yet when you seek the Lord, your God, from there, you shall indeed find him if you search after him with all your heart and soul.(U) 30 In your distress, when all these things shall have come upon you, you shall finally return to the Lord, your God, and listen to his voice. 31 Since the Lord, your God, is a merciful God, he will not abandon or destroy you, nor forget the covenant with your ancestors that he swore to them.(V)
32 Ask now of the days of old, before your time, ever since God created humankind upon the earth; ask from one end of the sky to the other: Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of? 33 Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live?(W) 34 Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders,(X) by war, with strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors, all of which the Lord, your God, did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? 35 All this you were allowed to see that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other.(Y) 36 Out of the heavens he let you hear his voice to discipline you; on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard him speaking out of the fire. 37 For love of your ancestors he chose their descendants after them and by his presence and great power led you out of Egypt, 38 dispossessing before you nations greater and mightier than you, so as to bring you in and to give their land to you as a heritage, as it is today. 39 This is why you must now acknowledge, and fix in your heart, that the Lord is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other.(Z) 40 And you must keep his statutes and commandments which I command you today, that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you forever.(AA)
Cities of Refuge. 41 (AB)Then Moses set apart three cities in the region east of the Jordan, 42 to which a homicide might flee who killed a neighbor unintentionally, where there had been no hatred previously, so that the killer might flee to one of these cities and live: 43 Bezer in the wilderness, in the region of the plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.
II. Second Address
A. The Lord’s Covenant with Israel
Introduction. 44 This is the law[d] which Moses set before the Israelites.(AC) 45 These are the decrees, and the statutes and ordinances[e] which Moses proclaimed to the Israelites after they came out of Egypt,(AD) 46 (AE)beyond the Jordan in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses and the Israelites defeated after they came out of Egypt.(AF) 47 They took possession of his land and the land of Og, king of Bashan, as well—the land of these two kings of the Amorites in the region beyond the Jordan to the east: 48 from Aroer on the edge of the Wadi Arnon to Mount Sion[f] (that is, Hermon) 49 and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan to the east, as far as the Arabah Sea[g] under the slopes of Pisgah.

- 4:24 A jealous God: Hebrew ’el qanna. The root of the adjective qanna expresses the idea of intense feeling focused on solicitude for someone or something; see, e.g., Ps 69:10; Sg 8:6; Is 9:6; 37:32; Ez 39:25. The Septuagint translated the adjective as zelotes, and the Vulgate followed suit; hence the traditional English rendering “jealous” (and sometimes “zealous”) found in the Douai-Rheims and King James versions. In modern usage, however, “jealous” denotes unreasonable, petty possessiveness, a meaning, even as nuance, wanting in the Hebrew. In the first commandment (5:6–10; Ex 20:2–6) and passages derived from it (like 4:24; 6:15; Ex 34:14; Jos 24:19; Na 1:2), Israel’s God is represented as totally committed to his purpose, and Israel is put on notice to take him and his directives for their life as a people with equal seriousness.
