Початок гріха
3 Із усіх диких звірів, створених Господом Богом, найхитрішим був змій. Він хотів обдурити жінку, тож і звернувся до неї: «Чи й справді Бог сказав, щоб ви не їли плодів з будь-яких дерев саду?» 2 Жінка відповіла змієві: «Ми можемо їсти плоди з усіх дерев у саду, 3 але Бог сказав, щоб ми не їли з того дерева, що росте посеред саду. Бог наказував: „Навіть не торкайтеся того дерева, бо помрете”». 4 Тоді змій сказав: «Ви не помрете. 5 Навіть Бог знає, що якщо покуштуєте плід з того дерева, то очі ваші відкриються, ви станете подібні Богу, дізнавшись про добро і зло».
6 І побачила тоді жінка, що плоди були добрими для їжі, а дерево—гарним на вигляд. Дерево вабило мудрістю, яку воно могло дати людині. Тож вона взяла плоди з дерева й почала їсти. Чоловік її також був поруч. Вона й йому дала кілька плодів, і він їх з’їв. 7 Вони обидва змінилися, неначе відкрилися їхні очі, й подивилися вони на все інакше. Збагнувши, що були голі, вони набрали фіґового листя і, зшивши його разом, зробили собі вбрання—пов’язки на стегна.
Боже прокляття
8 Пообідньою прохолодою Господь Бог гуляв садом. Почувши Його, чоловік і жінка сховалися від Нього серед дерев. 9 Господь Бог покликав чоловіка: «Де ти?» 10 І той озвався: «Я почув Тебе в саду, злякався, бо був голий, та й сховався».
11 Господь Бог тоді спитав у чоловіка: «Хто тобі сказав, що ти голий? Чи, може, ти з’їв плід з того дерева, з якого Я заборонив їсти?» 12 Чоловік відповів: «Жінка, яку Ти створив, щоб була зі мною, дала мені плід з того дерева. То я його й з’їв».
13 Тоді Господь Бог звернувся до жінки: «Що ж ти наробила!» Жінка відповіла на те: «Змій обдурив мене. Тож я й з’їла той плід».
14 І мовив Господь Бог до змія:
«Через те, що ти таке вчинив,
поведеться тобі гірше від усіх тварин і диких звірів.
Плазуватимеш на череві
й їстимеш порох усе своє життя.
15 Я зроблю вас із жінкою ворогами,
і дітей ваших також зроблю ворогами.
Її дитинча вразить тебе в голову,
а ти вразиш його п’яту».
16 Тоді Бог звернувся до жінки:
«Я примножу твої муки під час вагітності,
ти народжуватимеш дитя своє у муках.
Ти жадатимеш чоловіка свого[a],
а він пануватиме над тобою»[b].
17 Потім Він сказав Адамові:
«Ти послухався жінку свою і з’їв плід із дерева,
про яке Я казав: „Не можна з нього їсти”.
За те Я прокляну землю,
і ти муситимеш тяжко трудитися до кінця днів своїх,
щоб здобути собі їжу, яку земля вродить.
18 Земля родитиме терни та бур’яни для тебе.
І їстимеш ти дикі польові рослини[c].
19 Добуватимеш хліб у поті лиця свого,
аж доки не помреш і не станеш знову землею.
Бо створений був із неї.
Через те, що зробив Я тебе з пороху земного,
станеш знову ним, коли помреш».
20 І назвав Адам жінку свою Євою[d], бо була вона матір’ю всіх людей, що живуть на світі. 21 Господь Бог зробив одяг зі шкіри тварин для Адама та його жінки і повдягав їх.
Вигнання з раю
22 Тоді Господь Бог сказав: «Погляньте, людина вподібнилася до Нас, пізнавши добро і зло. Вона тепер може простягнути руку й зірвати плід із дерева життя, з’їсти його й жити вічно». 23 І вигнав тоді Господь Бог Адама з Едему, щоб працювати на землі, з якої того було створено. 24 Прогнавши Адама, зі східної сторони біля входу в Едем Він поставив Ангелів-Херувимів і верткий вогненний меч, щоб стерегти дорогу до дерева життя.

3 Але змій був хитріший над усю польову звірину, яку Господь Бог учинив. І сказав він до жінки: Чи Бог наказав: Не їжте з усякого дерева раю?
2 І відповіла жінка змієві: З плодів дерева раю ми можемо їсти,
3 але з плодів дерева, що в середині раю, Бог сказав: Не їжте із нього, і не доторкайтесь до нього, щоб вам не померти.
4 І сказав змій до жінки: Умерти не вмрете!
5 Бо відає Бог, що дня того, коли будете з нього ви їсти, ваші очі розкриються, і станете ви, немов Боги, знаючи добро й зло.
6 І побачила жінка, що дерево добре на їжу, і принадне для очей, і пожадане дерево, щоб набути знання. І взяла з його плоду, та й з'їла, і разом дала теж чоловікові своєму, і він з'їв.
7 І розкрилися очі в обох них, і пізнали, що нагі вони. І зшили вони фіґові листя, і зробили опаски собі.
8 І почули вони голос Господа Бога, що по раю ходив, як повіяв денний холодок. І сховався Адам і його жінка від Господа Бога серед дерев раю.
9 І закликав Господь Бог до Адама, і до нього сказав: Де ти?
10 А той відповів: Почув я Твій голос у раю і злякався, бо нагий я, і сховався.
11 І промовив Господь: Хто сказав тобі, що ти нагий? Чи ти не їв з того дерева, що Я звелів був тобі, щоб ти з нього не їв?
12 А Адам відказав: Жінка, що дав Ти її, щоб зо мною була, вона подала мені з того дерева, і я їв.
13 Тоді Господь Бог промовив до жінки: Що це ти наробила? А жінка сказала: Змій спокусив мене, і я їла.
14 І до змія сказав Господь Бог: За те, що зробив ти оце, то ти проклятіший над усю худобу, і над усю звірину польову! На своїм череві будеш плазувати, і порох ти їстимеш у всі дні свойого життя.
15 І Я покладу ворожнечу між тобою й між жінкою, між насінням твоїм і насінням її. Воно зітре тобі голову, а ти будеш жалити його в п'яту.
16 До жінки промовив: Помножуючи, помножу терпіння твої та болі вагітности твоєї. Ти в муках родитимеш діти, і до мужа твого пожадання твоє, а він буде панувати над тобою.
17 І до Адама сказав Він: За те, що ти послухав голосу жінки своєї та їв з того дерева, що Я наказав був тобі, говорячи: Від нього не їж, проклята через тебе земля! Ти в скорботі будеш їсти від неї всі дні свойого життя.
18 Тернину й осот вона буде родити тобі, і ти будеш їсти траву польову.
19 У поті свойого лиця ти їстимеш хліб, аж поки не вернешся в землю, бо з неї ти взятий. Бо ти порох, і до пороху вернешся.
20 І назвав Адам ім'я своїй жінці: Єва, бо вона була мати всього живого.
21 І зробив Господь Бог Адамові та жінці його одежу шкуряну і зодягнув їх.
22 І сказав Господь Бог: Ось став чоловік, немов один із Нас, щоб знати добро й зло. А тепер коли б не простяг він своєї руки, і не взяв з дерева життя, і щоб він не з'їв, і не жив повік віку.
23 І вислав його Господь Бог із еденського раю, щоб порати землю, з якої узятий він був.
24 І вигнав Господь Бог Адама. А на схід від еденського раю поставив Херувима і меча полум'яного, який обертався навколо, щоб стерегти дорогу до дерева життя.

The Fall
3 Now the serpent(A) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?(B)”
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,(C) 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”(D)
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.(E) 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,(F) knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable(G) for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,(H) who was with her, and he ate it.(I) 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;(J) so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.(K)
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking(L) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid(M) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”(N)
10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid(O) because I was naked;(P) so I hid.”
11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?(Q) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?(R)”
12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me(S)—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me,(T) and I ate.”
14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,
“Cursed(U) are you above all livestock
and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust(V)
all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring[a](W) and hers;(X)
he will crush[b] your head,(Y)
and you will strike his heel.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.(Z)
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.(AA)”
17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’(AB)
“Cursed(AC) is the ground(AD) because of you;
through painful toil(AE) you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.(AF)
18 It will produce thorns and thistles(AG) for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.(AH)
19 By the sweat of your brow(AI)
you will eat your food(AJ)
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”(AK)
20 Adam[c] named his wife Eve,[d](AL) because she would become the mother of all the living.
21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.(AM) 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us,(AN) knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life(AO) and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden(AP) to work the ground(AQ) from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side[e] of the Garden of Eden(AR) cherubim(AS) and a flaming sword(AT) flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.(AU)

3 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
