Великолепието на храма
2 На двадесет и първия ден от седмия месец[a] беше възвестено слово на Господа чрез пророк Агей: 2 „Говори на Зоровавел, син на Салатиил, управител на Юдея, и на първосвещеника Иисус, син на Йоседек, и на оцелелия народ следното: 3 (A)‘Между вас останал ли е такъв, който е видял този храм в предишната му слава? А сега какъв го виждате? Не е ли той във вашите очи, като да е нищо? 4 Но ти се ободри сега, Зоровавел, гласи словото на Господа, ободри се ти, първосвещеник Иисус, син на Йоседек! Ободрете се всички обитатели на тази земя, гласи словото на Господа на силите, и се захванете за работа, защото Аз съм с вас, гласи словото на Господ на силите. 5 (B)Съюзът, който Аз сключих с вас, когато излязохте от Египет, и Моят Дух са с вас. Питане към свещениците
10 В двадесет и четвъртия ден от деветия месец, през втората година от управлението на Дарий, беше възвестено словото на Господа чрез пророк Агей: 11 „Така говори Господ на силите: ‘Попитай сега свещениците за наставление при следното: 12 ако някой носи осветено жертвено месо в полата на дрехата си и с пола допре хляб или нещо варено, или вино, или елей, или каквото и да било ястие, ще стане ли това свещено’?“ Свещениците отговориха: „Не.“ 13 (E)Тогава Агей каза: „Ако се допре до всичко това някой, който се е осквернил от допиране до мъртвец, ще стане ли това нечисто?“ Свещениците отговориха: „Ще стане нечисто.“ 14 Тогава Агей отговори: „Такъв е този народ, такова е това племе пред Мене, гласи словото на Господа, и такова е всичко, което вършат! Каквито и жертви да принасят там, всичко е нечисто.“
Обещание за плодородие и благословение за Зоровавел
15 „А сега насочете вниманието си към миналото до днес, преди да е положен камък върху камък в Господния храм. 16 Случвало се е да идват при житен купен, който може да има двадесет снопа, а се оказваха само десет, идваха при гроздовия лин, за да нагребат петдесет мери от него, а се оказваха само двадесет. 17 Наказвах ви със сух вятър, с порази по житата и с градушка по всичко, произведено от вас, но вие не се обърнахте към Мене, казва Господ. 18 Насочете вниманието си към миналото до днес, от двадесет и четвъртия ден на деветия месец, от деня, когато бяха положени основите на Господния храм, насочете вниманието си: 19 нима зърното за посев е още в житниците? 2 Говори сега на управителя на Юда Зоровавел Салатиилевия син, и на великия свещеник Исуса Иоседековия син, и на оцелелите люде, като кажеш:
3 Кой остава между вас, който е видял тоя дом в предишната му слава? А какъв го виждате сега? Не е ли такъв дом в очите ви като нищо?
4 Но ободри се сега, Зоровавелю, казва Господ; и ободри се, ти велики свещениче, Исусе сине Иоседеков; и ободрете се, всички люде на тая земя, казва Господ, и работете; защото аз съм с вас, казва Господ на Силите.
5 Според думата на завета ми с вас, когато излязохте от Египет, Духът Ми ще пребъдва между вас; не бойте се.
6 Защото така казва Господ на Силите: Още веднъж, след малко, аз ще разтърся небето и земята, морето и сушата.
7 Ще разтърся и всичките народи; и отбраните неща на всичките народи ще дойдат; и Аз ще изпълня тоя дом със слава, казва Господ на Силите.

13 Тогава рече Агей - Ако някой, който е нечист от мъртво тяло, се допре до някое от тия неща, ще стане ли то нечисто? И свещениците в отговор рекоха - Ще стане нечисто.
14 Тогава Агей отговаряйки рече: Така са тия люде, и така е тоя народ, пред Мене, казва Господ, така е и всяко дело на ръцете им; и каквото принасят там е нечисто.
15 И сега, ви моля, помислете как беше в миналото до днес (Еврейски: От днес и надире.), преди да е бил положен камък върху камък в Господния храм:

2 1 on the twenty-first day of the seventh month,(A) the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:(B) 2 “Speak to Zerubbabel(C) son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak,[a](D) the high priest, and to the remnant(E) of the people. Ask them, 3 ‘Who of you is left who saw this house(F) in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?(G) 4 But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord. ‘Be strong,(H) Joshua son of Jozadak,(I) the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with(J) you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. 5 ‘This is what I covenanted(K) with you when you came out of Egypt.(L) And my Spirit(M) remains among you. Do not fear.’(N)
6 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while(O) I will once more shake the heavens and the earth,(P) the sea and the dry land. 7 I will shake all nations, and what is desired(Q) by all nations will come, and I will fill this house(R) with glory,(S)’ says the Lord Almighty. 8 ‘The silver is mine and the gold(T) is mine,’ declares the Lord Almighty. 9 ‘The glory(U) of this present house(V) will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,(W)’ declares the Lord Almighty.”
Blessings for a Defiled People
10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month,(X) in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Haggai: 11 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Ask the priests(Y) what the law says: 12 If someone carries consecrated meat(Z) in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?(AA)’”
The priests answered, “No.”
13 Then Haggai said, “If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?”
“Yes,” the priests replied, “it becomes defiled.(AB)”
14 Then Haggai said, “‘So it is with this people(AC) and this nation in my sight,’ declares the Lord. ‘Whatever they do and whatever they offer(AD) there is defiled.
15 “‘Now give careful thought(AE) to this from this day on[b]—consider how things were before one stone was laid(AF) on another in the Lord’s temple.(AG) 16 When anyone came to a heap(AH) of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat(AI) to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.(AJ) 17 I struck all the work of your hands(AK) with blight,(AL) mildew and hail,(AM) yet you did not return(AN) to me,’ declares the Lord.(AO) 18 ‘From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought(AP) to the day when the foundation(AQ) of the Lord’s temple was laid. Give careful thought: 19 Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate(AR) and the olive tree have not borne fruit.(AS)
“‘From this day on I will bless(AT) you.’”
Zerubbabel the Lord’s Signet Ring
20 The word of the Lord came to Haggai(AU) a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:(AV) 21 “Tell Zerubbabel(AW) governor of Judah that I am going to shake(AX) the heavens and the earth. 22 I will overturn(AY) royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms.(AZ) I will overthrow chariots(BA) and their drivers; horses and their riders(BB) will fall, each by the sword of his brother.(BC)
23 “‘On that day,(BD)’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant(BE) Zerubbabel(BF) son of Shealtiel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring,(BG) for I have chosen you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”

The New Temple’s Diminished Splendor
2 Then on October 17 of that same year,[a] the Lord sent another message through the prophet Haggai. 2 “Say this to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Jeshua[b] son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of God’s people there in the land: 3 ‘Does anyone remember this house—this Temple—in its former splendor? How, in comparison, does it look to you now? It must seem like nothing at all! 4 But now the Lord says: Be strong, Zerubbabel. Be strong, Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people still left in the land. And now get to work, for I am with you, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 5 My Spirit remains among you, just as I promised when you came out of Egypt. So do not be afraid.’
6 “For this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: In just a little while I will again shake the heavens and the earth, the oceans and the dry land. 7 I will shake all the nations, and the treasures of all the nations will be brought to this Temple. I will fill this place with glory, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 9 The future glory of this Temple will be greater than its past glory, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. And in this place I will bring peace. I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!”
Blessings Promised for Obedience
10 On December 18[c] of the second year of King Darius’s reign, the Lord sent this message to the prophet Haggai: 11 “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says. Ask the priests this question about the law: 12 ‘If one of you is carrying some meat from a holy sacrifice in his robes and his robe happens to brush against some bread or stew, wine or olive oil, or any other kind of food, will it also become holy?’”
The priests replied, “No.”
13 Then Haggai asked, “If someone becomes ceremonially unclean by touching a dead person and then touches any of these foods, will the food be defiled?”
And the priests answered, “Yes.”
14 Then Haggai responded, “That is how it is with this people and this nation, says the Lord. Everything they do and everything they offer is defiled by their sin. 15 Look at what was happening to you before you began to lay the foundation of the Lord’s Temple. 16 When you hoped for a twenty-bushel crop, you harvested only ten. When you expected to draw fifty gallons from the winepress, you found only twenty. 17 I sent blight and mildew and hail to destroy everything you worked so hard to produce. Even so, you refused to return to me, says the Lord.
18 “Think about this eighteenth day of December, the day[d] when the foundation of the Lord’s Temple was laid. Think carefully. 19 I am giving you a promise now while the seed is still in the barn.[e] You have not yet harvested your grain, and your grapevines, fig trees, pomegranates, and olive trees have not yet produced their crops. But from this day onward I will bless you.”
Promises for Zerubbabel
20 On that same day, December 18,[f] the Lord sent this second message to Haggai: 21 “Tell Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, that I am about to shake the heavens and the earth. 22 I will overthrow royal thrones and destroy the power of foreign kingdoms. I will overturn their chariots and riders. The horses will fall, and their riders will kill each other.
23 “But when this happens, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, I will honor you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant. I will make you like a signet ring on my finger, says the Lord, for I have chosen you. I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!”
