Guarigione del servo di un centurione
7 Quando ebbe terminato di rivolgere tutte queste parole al popolo che stava in ascolto, entrò in Cafarnao. 2 Il servo di un centurione era ammalato e stava per morire. Il centurione l'aveva molto caro. 3 Perciò, avendo udito parlare di Gesù, gli mandò alcuni anziani dei Giudei a pregarlo di venire e di salvare il suo servo. 4 Costoro giunti da Gesù lo pregavano con insistenza: «Egli merita che tu gli faccia questa grazia, dicevano, 5 perché ama il nostro popolo, ed è stato lui a costruirci la sinagoga». 6 Gesù si incamminò con loro. Non era ormai molto distante dalla casa quando il centurione mandò alcuni amici a dirgli: «Signore, non stare a disturbarti, io non son degno che tu entri sotto il mio tetto; 7 per questo non mi sono neanche ritenuto degno di venire da te, ma comanda con una parola e il mio servo sarà guarito. 8 Anch'io infatti sono uomo sottoposto a un'autorità, e ho sotto di me dei soldati; e dico all'uno: Và ed egli va, e a un altro: Vieni, ed egli viene, e al mio servo: Fà questo, ed egli lo fa». 9 All'udire questo Gesù restò ammirato e rivolgendosi alla folla che lo seguiva disse: «Io vi dico che neanche in Israele ho trovato una fede così grande!». 10 E gli inviati, quando tornarono a casa, trovarono il servo guarito.
Risurrezione del figlio della vedova di Nain
11 In seguito si recò in una città chiamata Nain e facevano la strada con lui i discepoli e grande folla. 12 Quando fu vicino alla porta della città, ecco che veniva portato al sepolcro un morto, figlio unico di madre vedova; e molta gente della città era con lei. 13 Vedendola, il Signore ne ebbe compassione e le disse: «Non piangere!». 14 E accostatosi toccò la bara, mentre i portatori si fermarono. Poi disse: «Giovinetto, dico a te, alzati!». 15 Il morto si levò a sedere e incominciò a parlare. Ed egli lo diede alla madre. 16 Tutti furono presi da timore e glorificavano Dio dicendo: «Un grande profeta è sorto tra noi e Dio ha visitato il suo popolo». 17 La fama di questi fatti si diffuse in tutta la Giudea e per tutta la regione.
Domanda di Giovanni Battista e testimonianza che gli rende Gesù
18 Anche Giovanni fu informato dai suoi discepoli di tutti questi avvenimenti. Giovanni chiamò due di essi 19 e li mandò a dire al Signore: «Sei tu colui che viene, o dobbiamo aspettare un altro?». 20 Venuti da lui, quegli uomini dissero: «Giovanni il Battista ci ha mandati da te per domandarti: Sei tu colui che viene o dobbiamo aspettare un altro?». 21 In quello stesso momento Gesù guarì molti da malattie, da infermità, da spiriti cattivi e donò la vista a molti ciechi. 22 Poi diede loro questa risposta: «Andate e riferite a Giovanni ciò che avete visto e udito: i ciechi riacquistano la vista, gli zoppi camminano, i lebbrosi vengono sanati, i sordi odono, i morti risuscitano, ai poveri è annunziata la buona novella. 23 E beato è chiunque non sarà scandalizzato di me!».
24 Quando gli inviati di Giovanni furono partiti, Gesù cominciò a dire alla folla riguardo a Giovanni: «Che cosa siete andati a vedere nel deserto? Una canna agitata dal vento? 25 E allora, che cosa siete andati a vedere? Un uomo avvolto in morbide vesti? Coloro che portano vesti sontuose e vivono nella lussuria stanno nei palazzi dei re. 26 Allora, che cosa siete andati a vedere? Un profeta? Sì, vi dico, e più che un profeta. 27 Egli è colui del quale sta scritto:
Ecco io mando davanti a te il mio messaggero,
egli preparerà la via davanti a te.
28 Io vi dico, tra i nati di donna non c'è nessuno più grande di Giovanni, e il più piccolo nel regno di Dio è più grande di lui. 29 Tutto il popolo che lo ha ascoltato, e anche i pubblicani, hanno riconosciuto la giustizia di Dio ricevendo il battesimo di Giovanni. 30 Ma i farisei e i dottori della legge non facendosi battezzare da lui hanno reso vano per loro il disegno di Dio.
Giudizio di Gesù sulla sua generazione
31 A chi dunque paragonerò gli uomini di questa generazione, a chi sono simili? 32 Sono simili a quei bambini che stando in piazza gridano gli uni agli altri:
Vi abbiamo suonato il flauto e non avete ballato;
vi abbiamo cantato un lamento e non avete pianto!
33 E' venuto infatti Giovanni il Battista che non mangia pane e non beve vino, e voi dite: Ha un demonio. 34 E' venuto il Figlio dell'uomo che mangia e beve, e voi dite: Ecco un mangione e un beone, amico dei pubblicani e dei peccatori. 35 Ma alla sapienza è stata resa giustizia da tutti i suoi figli».
La peccatrice perdonata
36 Uno dei farisei lo invitò a mangiare da lui. Egli entrò nella casa del fariseo e si mise a tavola. 37 Ed ecco una donna, una peccatrice di quella città, saputo che si trovava nella casa del fariseo, venne con un vasetto di olio profumato; 38 e fermatasi dietro si rannicchiò piangendo ai piedi di lui e cominciò a bagnarli di lacrime, poi li asciugava con i suoi capelli, li baciava e li cospargeva di olio profumato.
39 A quella vista il fariseo che l'aveva invitato pensò tra sé. «Se costui fosse un profeta, saprebbe chi e che specie di donna è colei che lo tocca: è una peccatrice». 40 Gesù allora gli disse: «Simone, ho una cosa da dirti». Ed egli: «Maestro, dì pure». 41 «Un creditore aveva due debitori: l'uno gli doveva cinquecento denari, l'altro cinquanta. 42 Non avendo essi da restituire, condonò il debito a tutti e due. Chi dunque di loro lo amerà di più?». 43 Simone rispose: «Suppongo quello a cui ha condonato di più». Gli disse Gesù: «Hai giudicato bene». 44 E volgendosi verso la donna, disse a Simone: «Vedi questa donna? Sono entrato nella tua casa e tu non m'hai dato l'acqua per i piedi; lei invece mi ha bagnato i piedi con le lacrime e li ha asciugati con i suoi capelli. 45 Tu non mi hai dato un bacio, lei invece da quando sono entrato non ha cessato di baciarmi i piedi. 46 Tu non mi hai cosparso il capo di olio profumato, ma lei mi ha cosparso di profumo i piedi. 47 Per questo ti dico: le sono perdonati i suoi molti peccati, poiché ha molto amato. Invece quello a cui si perdona poco, ama poco». 48 Poi disse a lei: «Ti sono perdonati i tuoi peccati». 49 Allora i commensali cominciarono a dire tra sé: «Chi è quest'uomo che perdona anche i peccati?». 50 Ma egli disse alla donna: «La tua fede ti ha salvata; và in pace!».

Due miracoli straordinari
7 Quando Gesù ebbe finito di parlare, tornò nella città di Cafarnao. 2 Là abitava un centurione romano, che aveva un servo, a cui era molto affezionato. Questo servo era ammalato e stava per morire. 3 Quando il centurione seppe di Gesù, mandò alcuni anziani giudei molto rispettati a chiedergli di venire a guarire il suo servo. 4 Essi cominciarono a pregare Gesù con insistenza. Gli raccontarono anche che brava persona fosse quel centurione.
«Se cʼè qualcuno che merita il tuo aiuto, questi è proprio lui!» dissero, 5 «Perché ama i Giudei e ci ha perfino fatto costruire una sinagoga a sue spese!»
6-8 Gesù andò con loro. Stava per arrivare alla casa, quando il centurione gli mandò incontro alcuni amici per dirgli: «Signore, non ti disturbare ad entrare nella mia casa, perché io non sono degno di un tale onore e neppure di venire da te di persona. Diʼ soltanto una parola e il mio servo certamente guarirà! Lo so, perché anchʼio dipendo dallʼautorità dei miei superiori e, a mia volta, ho autorità sui miei uomini. Basta che io dica “Andate!” ed essi ubbidiscono, oppure “Venite!” ed essi vengono; e se dico al mio servo: “Faʼ questo o quello”, egli lo fa. Perciò basta che tu dica: “Sii guarito!” ed il mio servo guarirà!»
9 Gesù rimase colpito da queste parole. Rivolgendosi alla folla, disse: «Neppure fra il popolo dʼIsraele ho mai trovato un uomo con una fede come questa!»
10 E quando gli amici del centurione ritornarono a casa, trovarono il servo completamente guarito.
11 Non molto tempo dopo, Gesù andò con i suoi discepoli nel villaggio di Naim e, come al solito, una gran folla lo seguiva. 12 In prossimità della porta del villaggio, ecco passare un funerale. Il morto era lʼunico figlio di una vedova, e molte persone accompagnavano, piangendo, la povera donna.
13 Quando il Signore la vide, ebbe pietà di lei. «Non piangere!» le disse. 14 Poi si avvicinò alla bara e la toccò.
I portatori si fermarono. «Ragazzo», disse Gesù, «sono io che te lo dico: àlzati!»
15 Il ragazzo si alzò a sedere e cominciò a parlare. E Gesù lo restituì alla madre.
16 Tutti furono presi da gran timore e si misero a lodare Dio, esclamando: «Un potente profeta è sorto fra noi!» e ancora: «Oggi abbiamo visto allʼopera la mano di Dio!»
17 La notizia di questi fatti corse da un estremo allʼaltro della Giudea, e perfino oltre i suoi confini.
Gesù e Giovanni
18 Ben presto i discepoli di Giovanni Battista vennero a conoscenza di tutto ciò che Gesù stava facendo. Quando lo riferirono a Giovanni, 19 questi mandò due dei suoi discepoli da Gesù per chiedergli: «Sei davvero tu il Messia che deve venire? O dobbiamo continuare ad aspettarlo?»
20-22 I due discepoli trovarono Gesù che stava guarendo molte persone dalle più diverse malattie. Risanava gli zoppi e i ciechi, e cacciava gli spiriti maligni. Quando gli riferirono le parole di Giovanni, Gesù rispose: «Tornate e raccontategli tutto ciò che avete visto e udito qui oggi: i ciechi possono vedere, gli zoppi camminano, i lebbrosi sono guariti, i sordi possono udire, i morti risuscitano e i poveri possono udire il Vangelo della salvezza. 23 E ditegli anche: “Beato chi non si sarà scandalizzato di me!”»
24 Partiti i discepoli di Giovanni, Gesù cominciò a parlare alla folla di lui. «Chi è costui che siete andati a vedere nel deserto della Giudea?» chiese loro: «Un uomo debole come un filo dʼerba, mosso dal minimo alito di vento? 25 No! E allora che cosa siete andati a vedere? Un uomo drappeggiato in abiti lussuosi? No! Quelli che vivono nel lusso stanno nei palazzi, non nel deserto. 26 Allora, che cosa siete andati a vedere? Un profeta? Sì, questa è la risposta giusta! Anzi, egli è più di un profeta. 27 È quello a cui si riferiscono le Scritture, quando dicono: “Ecco, manderò il mio messaggero davanti a te, per prepararti la strada!”
28 Fra tutti gli esseri umani non ce nʼè mai stato uno più grande di Giovanni. Eppure, perfino lʼultimo abitante del Regno di Dio è più grande di lui!
29 E tutti quelli che hanno sentito predicare Giovanni, perfino i più malvagi, hanno riconosciuto che ciò che richiedeva era giusto, e si sono fatti battezzare da lui. 30 Tutti. Cioè, tutti tranne i Farisei e i dottori della legge. Essi hanno respinto il progetto che Dio aveva per loro e non hanno voluto farsi battezzare da Giovanni».
31 «Che posso dire degli uomini dei nostri tempi?» chiese Gesù. «A che cosa potrei paragonarli? 32 Mi sembrano quei bambini che giocano nella piazza e si lamentano così coi loro amici: “Non vi piace se giochiamo agli sposi e non vi piace se giochiamo al funerale!” 33 Lo stesso fate anche voi: perché, prima è venuto Giovanni Battista, che spesso digiuna e non beve vino, e voi dite: “Deve essere matto!” 34 Poi sono venuto io, che mangio e bevo, e voi dite: “Ma che mangione è quel Gesù! E come beve! E che cattive compagnie frequenta!” 35 Ma la sapienza di Dio si rivela vera dai suoi frutti».
36 Un giorno, un fariseo invitò Gesù a pranzo a casa sua ed egli accettò lʼinvito. Mentre si sedevano per mangiare, 37 una donna, una prostituta di quel villaggio seppe che Gesù stava là e venne, portando un vasetto di alabastro, pieno di costoso profumo. 38 Entrò, sʼinginocchiò dietro di lui, ai suoi piedi e, piangendo, glieli bagnava di lacrime e poi li asciugava con i suoi capelli, baciandoli e ribaciandoli, mentre li cospargeva di profumo.
39 Quando il fariseo che lo aveva invitato vide ciò che stava accadendo e riconobbe la donna, pensò: «Questa è la prova che Gesù non è un profeta, perché se fosse veramente mandato da Dio, saprebbe di che risma è questa donna!»
40 Gesù, allora, si voltò verso di lui e gli disse: «Simone, devo dirti una cosa».
«Bene, Maestro», rispose Simone, «Dimmi!»
41 Allora Gesù gli raccontò questa storia: «Un tale prestò dei soldi a due persone: 500 denari ad uno e 50 a un altro. 42 Ma nessuno di loro poté restituire i soldi, così egli passò sopra alla cosa e lasciò che si tenessero il denaro. Secondo te, chi dei due gli sarà stato più riconoscente dopo questʼatto generoso?»
43 «Senzʼaltro quello che gli doveva di più», rispose Simone. «Giusto», fu dʼaccordo Gesù.
44 Poi, voltandosi verso la donna, disse a Simone: «Guarda, vedi questa donna inginocchiata? Quando sono entrato in casa tua, tu non ti sei nemmeno preso il disturbo di darmi un poʼ dʼacqua per lavarmi i piedi, invece lei me li ha lavati con le sue lacrime e me li ha asciugati con i suoi capelli.
45 Tu non mi hai dato il tradizionale bacio di saluto, lei invece, da quando sono entrato, non ha smesso di baciarmi e ribaciarmi i piedi.
46 Tu hai trascurato la rituale cortesia di ungermi il capo con lʼolio dʼoliva, mentre lei mi ha cosparso i piedi di profumo prezioso.
47 Dunque, i suoi peccati, anche se sono molti, le sono perdonati, perciò questa donna mi ha dimostrato molto amore. Ma quelli a cui è perdonato poco, dimostrano meno amore».
48 Poi, rivolto alla donna, disse: «I tuoi peccati ti sono perdonati».
49 Allora glʼinvitati che erano a tavola con lui, dissero fra di loro: «Ma chi crede di essere costui, che se ne va in giro a perdonare i peccati?»
50 Ma Gesù disse alla donna: «La tua fede ti ha salvato. Vaʼ in pace!»

The Faith of the Centurion(A)
7 When Jesus had finished saying all this(B) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2 There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6 So Jesus went with them.
He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.(C) 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son(D)
11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord(E) saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”(F) 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 They were all filled with awe(G) and praised God.(H) “A great prophet(I) has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”(J) 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.(K)
Jesus and John the Baptist(L)
18 John’s(M) disciples(N) told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses(O) and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(P) 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet?(Q) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:
28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God(S) is greater than he.”
29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.(T) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law(U) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:
“‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not cry.’
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine,(V) and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(W) 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman(X)(Y)
36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet,(Z) he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[c] and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet,(AA) but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss,(AB) but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head,(AC) but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(AD)
49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you;(AE) go in peace.”(AF)

3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
5 For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.
6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:

13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.
18 And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.
19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.
26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.
36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
