Jesus lebt (Matthäus 28,1‒8; Markus 16,1‒8; Johannes 20,1‒13)
24 Ganz früh am Sonntagmorgen, dem ersten Tag der neuen Woche, nahmen die Frauen die wohlriechenden Öle mit, die sie zubereitet hatten, und gingen zum Grab. 2 Dort angekommen sahen sie, dass der Stein, mit dem man es verschlossen hatte, zur Seite gerollt war. 3 Als sie die Grabkammer betraten, fanden sie den Leichnam von Jesus, dem Herrn, nicht. 4 Verwundert überlegten sie, was das alles zu bedeuten hatte. Plötzlich traten zwei Männer in glänzend weißen Kleidern zu ihnen. 5 Die Frauen erschraken und wagten nicht, die beiden anzusehen.
»Warum sucht ihr den Lebenden bei den Toten?«, fragten die Männer. 6 »Er ist nicht mehr hier. Er ist auferstanden! Denkt doch daran, was er euch damals in Galiläa gesagt hat: 7 ›Der Menschensohn muss den gottlosen Menschen ausgeliefert werden. Sie werden ihn kreuzigen, aber am dritten Tag wird er von den Toten auferstehen.‹«
8 Da erinnerten sich die Frauen an diese Worte von Jesus. 9 Sie liefen vom Grab in die Stadt zurück, um den elf Aposteln und den anderen Jüngern zu berichten, was sie erlebt hatten.
10 Zu diesen Frauen gehörten Maria aus Magdala, Johanna, Maria, die Mutter von Jakobus, und noch etliche andere. 11 Aber die Apostel hielten ihren Bericht für leeres Gerede und glaubten den Frauen kein Wort.
12 Doch Petrus sprang auf und lief zum Grab. Als er hineinschaute, sah er außer den Leinentüchern nichts. Verwundert ging er in die Stadt zurück.
Jesus begegnet zwei Jüngern auf dem Weg nach Emmaus (Markus 16,12‒13)
13 Am selben Tag gingen zwei Jünger nach Emmaus, einem Dorf elf Kilometer von Jerusalem entfernt. 14 Unterwegs sprachen sie miteinander über die Ereignisse der vergangenen Tage. 15 Während sie sich unterhielten und nachdachten, kam Jesus selbst hinzu und ging mit ihnen. 16 Aber sie – wie mit Blindheit geschlagen – erkannten ihn nicht.[a]
17 »Worüber sprecht ihr da miteinander?«, wollte Jesus wissen. Die Jünger blieben traurig stehen, 18 und verwundert bemerkte Kleopas, einer von den beiden: »Du bist wohl der Einzige in Jerusalem, der nichts von den Ereignissen der letzten Tage weiß.« 19 »Was meint ihr?«, fragte Jesus.
»Das, was mit Jesus aus Nazareth geschehen ist«, antworteten die Jünger. »Er war ein Prophet, den Gott geschickt hatte. Jeder im Volk konnte das an seinen mächtigen Worten und Taten erkennen. 20 Aber unsere obersten Priester und die anderen Mitglieder des Hohen Rates haben ihn an die Römer ausgeliefert. Er wurde zum Tode verurteilt und dann ans Kreuz geschlagen. 21 Dabei hatten wir gehofft, dass er der von Gott versprochene Retter ist, der Israel befreit.
Seither sind nun schon drei Tage vergangen. 22 Und dann wurden wir heute Morgen auch noch durch einige Frauen sehr beunruhigt, die zu uns gehören. Schon vor Sonnenaufgang waren sie zum Grab gegangen; 23 aber der Leichnam von Jesus war nicht mehr da. Die Frauen kamen zurück und erzählten, ihnen seien Engel erschienen, die sagten: ›Jesus lebt!‹ 24 Einige von uns sind gleich zum Grab gelaufen. Es war tatsächlich alles so, wie die Frauen berichtet hatten. Aber Jesus haben sie nicht gesehen.«
25 Darauf sagte Jesus zu ihnen: »Wie wenig versteht ihr doch! Warum fällt es euch nur so schwer, alles zu glauben, was die Propheten gesagt haben? 26 Musste der von Gott erwählte Retter nicht all dies erleiden, bevor ihn Gott zum höchsten Herrn einsetzte[b]?« 27 Dann erklärte ihnen Jesus, was durch die ganze Schrift hindurch über ihn gesagt wird – von den Büchern Mose angefangen bis zu den Propheten.
28 Inzwischen waren sie kurz vor Emmaus, und Jesus tat so, als wolle er weitergehen. 29 Deshalb drängten ihn die Jünger: »Bleib doch über Nacht bei uns! Es ist spät und wird schon dunkel.« So ging er mit ihnen ins Haus. 30 Als Jesus sich mit ihnen zum Essen niedergelassen hatte, nahm er das Brot, dankte Gott dafür, brach es in Stücke und gab es ihnen. 31 Da wurden ihnen die Augen geöffnet: Es war Jesus. Doch im selben Moment verschwand er, und sie konnten ihn nicht mehr sehen.
32 Sie sagten zueinander: »Hat es uns nicht tief berührt, als er unterwegs mit uns sprach und uns die Heilige Schrift erklärte?«
33 Ohne Zeit zu verlieren, brachen sie auf und kehrten nach Jerusalem zurück. Dort waren die elf Jünger und andere Freunde von Jesus zusammen. 34 Von ihnen wurden sie mit den Worten begrüßt: »Der Herr ist tatsächlich auferstanden! Er hat sich Simon gezeigt!« 35 Nun erzählten die beiden, was auf dem Weg nach Emmaus geschehen war und dass sie ihren Herrn erkannt hatten, als er das Brot in Stücke brach.
Der Auferstandene erscheint seinen Jüngern (Markus 16,14‒18; Johannes 20,19‒23; Apostelgeschichte 1,4‒8)
36 Noch während sie berichteten, stand Jesus plötzlich mitten im Kreis der Jünger. »Friede sei mit euch!«, begrüßte er sie. 37 Die Jünger erschraken und fürchteten sich sehr. Sie dachten, ein Geist stünde vor ihnen.
38 »Warum habt ihr solche Angst?«, fragte Jesus. »Wieso zweifelt ihr daran, dass ich es bin? 39 Seht doch die Wunden an meinen Händen und Füßen! Ich bin es wirklich. Hier, fasst mich an und überzeugt euch, dass ich kein Geist bin. Geister sind doch nicht aus Fleisch und Blut wie ich!« 40 Dann zeigte er ihnen seine Hände und Füße. 41 Aber vor lauter Freude konnten sie es noch immer nicht fassen, dass Jesus vor ihnen stand. Endlich fragte er sie: »Habt ihr etwas zu essen hier?« 42 Sie brachten ihm ein Stück gebratenen Fisch. 43 Den nahm er und aß ihn vor ihren Augen.
44 Dann sagte er zu ihnen: »Erinnert euch an das, was ich euch angekündigt habe, als ich noch mit euch zusammen war: ›Alles muss sich erfüllen, was bei Mose, bei den Propheten und in den Psalmen über mich steht.‹« 45 Nun erklärte er ihnen die Worte der Heiligen Schrift. 46 Er sagte: »Es steht doch dort geschrieben: Der von Gott erwählte Retter muss leiden und sterben, und er wird am dritten Tag von den Toten auferstehen. 47 Allen Völkern wird in seinem Auftrag verkündet: Gott vergibt jedem die Schuld, der zu ihm umkehrt.[c]
Das soll zuerst in Jerusalem geschehen. 48 Ihr selbst habt miterlebt, dass Gottes Zusagen in Erfüllung gegangen sind. Ihr seid meine Zeugen. 49 Ich werde den Heiligen Geist zu euch herabsenden, den mein Vater euch versprochen hat.[d] Bleibt hier in Jerusalem, bis ihr diese Kraft von oben empfangen habt!«
Jesus kehrt zu seinem Vater zurück (Markus 16,19; Apostelgeschichte 1,9‒12)
50 Jesus führte seine Jünger von Jerusalem nach Betanien. Er segnete sie mit erhobenen Händen. 51 Noch während er sie segnete, entfernte er sich von ihnen und wurde zum Himmel emporgehoben. 52 Die Jünger fielen vor ihm nieder. Danach kehrten sie voller Freude nach Jerusalem zurück. 53 Von da an gingen sie immer wieder in den Tempel, um Gott zu loben und ihm zu danken.

Die Auferstehung Jesu Christi
24 Am ersten Tage der Woche aber, früh morgens, kamen sie zur Gruft und brachten die Spezereien, die sie bereitet hatten. 2 Sie fanden aber den Stein von der Gruft weggewälzt. 3 Und als sie hineingingen, fanden sie den Leib des Herrn Jesus nicht. 4 Und es begab sich, als sie deswegen ratlos waren, siehe, da standen zwei Männer in strahlenden Kleidern bei ihnen. 5 Da sie nun erschraken und das Angesicht zur Erde neigten, sprachen diese zu ihnen: Was suchet ihr den Lebenden bei den Toten? 6 Er ist nicht hier, sondern er ist auferstanden! Denket daran, wie er zu euch redete, als er noch in Galiläa war 7 und sagte: Des Menschen Sohn muß in die Hände sündiger Menschen überantwortet und gekreuzigt werden und am dritten Tage auferstehen.
8 Da erinnerten sie sich seiner Worte, 9 kehrten vom Grabe zurück und verkündigten das alles den Elfen und allen übrigen. 10 Es waren aber Maria Magdalena und Johanna und Maria, des Jakobus Mutter; sie und die übrigen sagten dies den Aposteln. 11 Und ihre Worte kamen ihnen vor wie ein Märchen, und sie glaubten ihnen nicht.
12 Petrus aber stand auf und lief zur Gruft, bückte sich und sah nur die leinenen Tücher daliegen; und ging nach Hause, voll Staunen über das, was geschehen war.
Die Jünger von Emmaus
13 Und siehe, zwei von ihnen gingen an demselben Tage nach einem Flecken, der von Jerusalem sechzig Stadien entfernt war, namens Emmaus. 14 Und sie redeten miteinander von allen diesen Geschehnissen. 15 Und es begab sich, während sie miteinander redeten und sich besprachen, nahte sich Jesus selbst und ging mit ihnen. 16 Ihre Augen aber wurden gehalten, daß sie ihn nicht erkannten.
17 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was sind das für Reden, die ihr unterwegs miteinander wechselt, und seid so traurig? 18 Da antwortete der eine namens Kleopas und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der einzige Fremdling in Jerusalem, der nicht erfahren hat, was daselbst in diesen Tagen geschehen ist? 19 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was? Sie sprachen zu ihm:
Das mit Jesus von Nazareth, der ein Prophet war, mächtig in Tat und Wort vor Gott und allem Volk; 20 wie ihn unsere Hohenpriester und Obersten überantwortet haben, daß er zum Tode verurteilt und gekreuzigt wurde. 21 Wir aber hofften, er sei der, welcher Israel erlösen sollte. Ja, bei alledem ist heute schon der dritte Tag, seit solches geschehen ist. 22 Zudem haben uns auch einige Frauen aus unserer Mitte in Verwirrung gebracht; sie waren am Morgen früh beim Grabe, 23 fanden seinen Leib nicht, kamen und sagten, sie hätten sogar eine Erscheinung von Engeln gesehen, welche sagten, er lebe. 24 Und etliche der Unsrigen gingen hin zum Grabe und fanden es so, wie die Frauen gesagt hatten, ihn selbst aber haben sie nicht gesehen.
25 Und er sprach zu ihnen: O ihr Toren! Wie langsam ist euer Herz zu glauben an alles, was die Propheten geredet haben! 26 Mußte nicht Christus solches leiden und in seine Herrlichkeit eingehen? 27 Und er hob an von Mose und von allen Propheten, und legte ihnen in allen Schriften aus, was sich auf ihn bezog.
28 Und sie näherten sich dem Flecken, wohin sie wanderten, und er stellte sich, als wollte er weitergehen. 29 Und sie nötigten ihn und sprachen: Bleibe bei uns, denn es will Abend werden, und der Tag hat sich schon geneigt! Und er ging hinein, um bei ihnen zu bleiben.
30 Und es begab sich, als er mit ihnen zu Tische saß, nahm er das Brot, sprach den Segen, brach es und gab es ihnen. 31 Da wurden ihre Augen aufgetan, und sie erkannten ihn; und er verschwand vor ihnen. 32 Und sie sprachen zueinander: Brannte nicht unser Herz in uns, da er mit uns redete auf dem Weg, als er uns die Schrift öffnete?
33 Und sie standen auf in derselben Stunde und kehrten nach Jerusalem zurück und fanden die Elf und ihre Genossen versammelt,
34 die sprachen: Der Herr ist wahrhaftig auferstanden und dem Simon erschienen! 35 Und sie selbst erzählten, was auf dem Wege geschehen, und wie er von ihnen am Brotbrechen erkannt worden war.
Jesus erscheint den Aposteln. Abschiedsreden
36 Während sie aber davon redeten, trat er selbst mitten unter sie und spricht zu ihnen: Friede sei mit euch! 37 Aber bestürzt und voll Furcht meinten sie, einen Geist zu sehen. 38 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was seid ihr so erschrocken, und warum steigen Zweifel auf in euren Herzen? 39 Sehet an meinen Händen und Füßen, daß ich es bin! Rühret mich an und sehet, denn ein Geist hat nicht Fleisch und Bein, wie ihr sehet, daß ich habe.
40 Und indem er das sagte, zeigte er ihnen die Hände und die Füße. 41 Da sie aber noch nicht glaubten vor Freuden und sich verwunderten, sprach er zu ihnen: Habt ihr etwas zu essen hier? 42 Da reichten sie ihm ein Stück gebratenen Fisch und von einem Honigwaben. 43 Und er nahm es und aß vor ihnen.
Auftrag und Verheißung
44 Er sprach aber zu ihnen: Das sind meine Worte, die ich zu euch gesagt habe, als ich noch bei euch war, daß alles erfüllt werden müsse, was im Gesetz Moses und in den Propheten und den Psalmen von mir geschrieben steht.
45 Da öffnete er ihnen das Verständnis, um die Schriften zu verstehen, 46 und sprach zu ihnen: So steht es geschrieben, daß Christus leiden und am dritten Tage von den Toten auferstehen werde, 47 und daß in seinem Namen Buße zur Vergebung der Sünden gepredigt werden soll unter allen Völkern. 48 Fanget an in Jerusalem,Zeugen davon zu sein! 49 Und siehe, ich sende auf euch die Verheißung meines Vaters; ihr aber bleibet in der Stadt, bis ihr angetan werdet mit Kraft aus der Höhe.
Die Himmelfahrt Jesu
50 Er führte sie aber hinaus bis in die Nähe von Bethanien und hob seine Hände auf und segnete sie. 51 Und es begab sich, indem er sie segnete, schied er von ihnen und wurde aufgehoben gen Himmel. 52 Und sie fielen vor ihm nieder und kehrten nach Jerusalem zurück mit großer Freude 53 und waren allezeit im Tempel und priesen und lobten Gott.

Jesus Has Risen(A)
24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared(B) and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.(C) 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning(D) stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:(E) 7 ‘The Son of Man(F) must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”(G) 8 Then they remembered his words.(H)
9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them(I) who told this to the apostles.(J) 11 But they did not believe(K) the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves,(L) and he went away,(M) wondering to himself what had happened.
On the Road to Emmaus
13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem.(N) 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;(O) 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.(P)
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas,(Q) asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
19 “What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,”(R) they replied. “He was a prophet,(S) powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers(T) handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.(U) And what is more, it is the third day(V) since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us.(W) They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”(X)
25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”(Y) 27 And beginning with Moses(Z) and all the Prophets,(AA) he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.(AB)
28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it(AC) and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him,(AD) and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us(AE) while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures(AF) to us?”
33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord(AG) has risen and has appeared to Simon.”(AH) 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.(AI)
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(AJ)
37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.(AK) 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see;(AL) a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.(AM)
44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:(AN) Everything must be fulfilled(AO) that is written about me in the Law of Moses,(AP) the Prophets(AQ) and the Psalms.”(AR)
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer(AS) and rise from the dead on the third day,(AT) 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name(AU) to all nations,(AV) beginning at Jerusalem.(AW) 48 You are witnesses(AX) of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised;(AY) but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension of Jesus
50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany,(AZ) he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.(BA) 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple,(BB) praising God.

13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;
23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.
30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
36 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
43 And he took it, and did eat before them.
44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

24 Now (B)on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, [a]and certain other women with them, came to the tomb (C)bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 (D)But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 (E)Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened, as they were [b]greatly perplexed about this, that (F)behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen! (G)Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be (H)delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”
8 And (I)they remembered His words. 9 (J)Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, (K)Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11 (L)And their words seemed to them like [c]idle tales, and they did not believe them. 12 (M)But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths [d]lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.
The Road to Emmaus(N)
13 (O)Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was [e]seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that (P)Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16 But (Q)their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
17 And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you [f]walk and are sad?”
18 Then the one (R)whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”
19 And He said to them, “What things?”
So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, (S)who was a Prophet (T)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 (U)and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping (V)that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 Yes, and (W)certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. 23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 And (X)certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”
25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 (Y)Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His (Z)glory?” 27 And beginning at (AA)Moses and (AB)all the Prophets, He [g]expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
The Disciples’ Eyes Opened
28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and (AC)He [h]indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But (AD)they constrained Him, saying, (AE)“Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.
30 Now it came to pass, as (AF)He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and (AG)has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was [i]known to them in the breaking of bread.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples(AH)
36 (AI)Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” 37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen (AJ)a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. (AK)Handle Me and see, for a (AL)spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”
40 [j]When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 But while they still did not believe (AM)for joy, and marveled, He said to them, (AN)“Have you any food here?” 42 So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish [k]and some honeycomb. 43 (AO)And He took it and ate in their presence.

The Ascension(AW)
