2 Ora, in quei giorni fu emanato un decreto da parte di Cesare Augusto che si compisse il censimento di tutto l'impero.
2 Questo censimento fu il primo ad essere fatto quando Quirinio era governatore della Siria.
3 E tutti andavano a farsi registrare ciascuno nella sua città.
4 Or anche Giuseppe uscí dalla città di Nazaret della Galilea, per recarsi in Giudea nella città di Davide, chiamata Betlemme, perché egli era della casa e della famiglia di Davide,
5 per farsi registrare con Maria, sua moglie, che aveva sposato e che era incinta.
6 Cosí mentre erano là, giunse per lei il tempo del parto.
7 Ed ella diede alla luce il suo figlio primogenito, e lo fasciò e lo pose a giacere in una mangiatoia, perché non c'era posto per loro nell'albergo.
8 Ora in quella stessa regione c'erano dei pastori che dimoravano all'aperto nei campi, e di notte facevano la guardia al loro gregge.
9 Ed ecco, un angelo del Signore si presentò loro e la gloria del Signore risplendette intorno a loro, ed essi furono presi da grande paura.
10 Ma l'angelo disse loro: «Non temete, perché vi annunzio una grande gioia che tutto il popolo avrà;
11 poiché oggi nella città di Davide è nato per voi un Salvatore, che è Cristo, il Signore
12 E questo vi servirà di segno: Voi troverete un bambino fasciato, coricato in una mangiatoia».
13 E ad un tratto si uní all'angelo una moltitudine dell'esercito celeste che lodava Dio, dicendo:
14 «Gloria a Dio nei luoghi altissimi, e pace in terra agli uomini, su cui si posa il suo favore».
15 E avvenne che, quando gli angeli si allontanarono da loro per ritornare in cielo, i pastori dissero tra loro: «Andiamo fino a Betlemme, per vedere ciò che è avvenuto e che il Signore ci ha fatto conoscere».
16 Andarono quindi in fretta e trovarono Maria, Giuseppe e il bambino, che giaceva in una mangiatoia.
17 Dopo averlo visto, divulgarono quanto era stato loro detto a proposito di quel bambino.
18 E tutti coloro che li udirono si meravigliarono delle cose raccontate loro dai pastori.
19 Maria custodiva tutte queste parole, meditandole in cuor.
20 E i pastori se ne ritornarono, glorificando e lodando Dio per tutte le cose che avevano udito e visto, come era stato loro detto.
21 E quando furono trascorsi gli otto giorni dopo i quali egli doveva essere circonciso, gli fu posto nome Gesú, il nome dato dall'angelo prima che fosse concepito nel grembo.
22 Quando poi furono compiuti i giorni della purificazione di lei secondo la legge di Mosé, portarono il bambino a Gerusalemme per presentarlo al Signore
23 come è scritto nella legge del Signore: «Ogni maschio primogenito sarà chiamato santo al Signore»,
24 e per offrire in sacrificio, come è detto nella legge del Signore, un paio di tortore o due giovani colombi.
25 Or ecco, vi era a Gerusalemme un uomo chiamato Simeone; quest'uomo era giusto e pio e aspettava la consolazione d'Israele; e lo Spirito Santo era su di lui.
26 E gli era stato divinamente rivelato dallo Spirito Santo, che non sarebbe morto prima di aver visto il Cristo del Signore.
27 Egli dunque, mosso dallo Spirito, venne nel tempio, e, come i genitori vi portavano il bambino Gesú, per fare a suo riguardo quanto prescriveva la legge,
28 egli lo prese tra le braccia e benedisse Dio, dicendo:
29 «Ora, Signore, lascia che il tuo servo muoia in pace secondo la tua parola,
30 perché i miei occhi hanno visto la tua salvezza,
31 che tu hai preparato davanti a tutti i popoli;
32 luce per illuminare le genti e gloria del tuo popolo Israele».
33 E Giuseppe e la madre del bambino si meravigliavano delle cose che si dicevano di lui.
34 Poi Simeone li benedisse e disse a Maria sua madre: «Ecco, costui è posto per la caduta e per l'innalzamento di molti in Israele e per essere segno di contraddizione,
35 e a te stessa una spada trafiggerà l'anima, affinché siano svelati i pensieri di molti cuori».
36 Vi era anche Anna, una profetessa, figlia di Fanuel, della tribú di Aser, la quale era molto avanzata in età, avendo vissuto dopo la sua verginità sette anni con il marito.
37 Ella era vedova e, sebbene avesse ormai ottantaquattro anni, non si allontanava mai dal tempio, servendo Dio notte e giorno con digiuni e preghiere.
38 Sopraggiunta ella pure in quel momento, lodava il Signore e parlava di quel bambino a tutti coloro che aspettavano la redenzione in Gerusalemme.
39 Ora, quando ebbero compiuto tutto quello che riguardava l'osservanza della legge del Signore, ritornarono in Galilea nella loro città di Nazaret.
40 Intanto il bambino cresceva e si fortificava nello spirito, essendo ripieno di sapienza; e la grazia di Dio era su di lui.
41 Or i suoi genitori si recavano ogni anno a Gerusalemme per la festa di Pasqua.
42 E, quando egli compí dodici anni, essi salirono a Gerusalemme, secondo l'usanza della festa.
43 Terminati quei giorni, mentre essi ritornavano, il fanciullo Gesú rimase in Gerusalemme; ma Giuseppe e sua madre non lo sapevano.
44 Supponendo che egli fosse nella comitiva, essi fecero una giornata di cammino, poi si misero a cercarlo fra i parenti e i conoscenti;
45 e, non avendolo trovato, tornarono a Gerusalemme in cerca di lui.
46 E avvenne che, tre giorni dopo, lo trovarono nel tempio, seduto in mezzo ai dottori, intento ad ascoltarli e a far loro domande.
47 E tutti quelli che l'udivano, stupivano della sua intelligenza e delle sue risposte.
48 E, quando essi lo videro, rimasero stupiti, e sua madre gli disse: «Figlio, perché ci hai fatto questo? Ecco, tuo padre ed io, angosciati, ti cercavamo!».
49 Ma egli disse loro: «Perché mi cercavate? Non sapevate che io devo occuparmi delle cose del Padre mio?».
50 Ma essi non compresero le parole che aveva detto loro.
51 Ed egli scese con loro, tornò a Nazaret e stava loro sottomesso. E sua madre serbava tutte queste parole nel suo cuore.
52 E Gesú cresceva in sapienza, in statura e in grazia davanti a Dio e agli uomini.

Nascita di Gesù
2 In quel periodo lʼimperatore romano, Cesare Augusto, decretò che si facesse un censimento di tutta la nazione. 2 Questo avvenne quando Quirino era governatore della Siria.
3 Per il censimento era obbligatorio che tutti tornassero al paese dei propri antenati, per le debite registrazioni. 4 Siccome Giuseppe era di stirpe reale, doveva andare in Giudea, a Betlemme, paese natale del re Davide. Era quindi necessario che si mettesse in viaggio da Nazaret di Galilea verso Betlemme. 5 Giuseppe prese con sé Maria, sua moglie, che in quel periodo era in avanzato stato di gravidanza.
6 Mentre si trovavano a Betlemme, fu tempo che il bambino nascesse, 7 e Maria diede alla luce il suo primo figlio, un maschio. Ella lo avvolse in una coperta e lo depose nella mangiatoia di una stalla, perché non cʼera posto per loro nella locanda del villaggio.
8 Quella notte, nei campi fuori dal villaggio cʼerano alcuni pastori che sorvegliavano le loro greggi. 9 Improvvisamente un angelo apparve in mezzo a loro, e la gloria del Signore li avvolse di luce. I pastori erano molto spaventati, 10 ma lʼangelo li rassicurò.
«Non temete!» disse. «Io vi porto la più bella notizia che sia stata mai annunciata; questa notizia darà grande gioia a tutti! 11 Il Salvatore, proprio il Messia, il Signore, è nato stanotte a Betlemme! 12 Come potete riconoscerlo? Troverete un bambino avvolto in una coperta, che giace in una mangiatoia».
13 Subito al primo angelo se ne aggiunsero molti altri, gli eserciti del cielo, che lodavano Dio:
14 «Gloria a Dio nel più alto dei cieli», cantavano, «e pace sulla terra a quelli che egli ama!»
15 Quando gli angeli se ne furono tornati di nuovo in cielo, i pastori cominciarono a dirsi lʼun lʼaltro: «Venite! Andiamo a Betlemme. Andiamo a vedere quello che è successo e che il Signore ci ha fatto sapere!»
16 Corsero al villaggio, e là trovarono Maria e Giuseppe. E cʼera il bambino che giaceva nella mangiatoia. 17 I pastori divulgarono ovunque lʼaccaduto e ciò che lʼangelo aveva detto del bambino; 18 e tutti quelli che udivano la loro storia restavano meravigliati. 19 Maria, intanto, serbava queste cose nel suo cuore, e spesso ci ripensava.
20 I pastori, poi, ritornarono ai loro campi e alle loro greggi, lodando Dio per la visita degli angeli e perché avevano visto il bambino, proprio come lʼangelo aveva annunciato.
21 Otto giorni più tardi, durante la cerimonia della circoncisione, il bambino fu chiamato Gesù, il nome che gli aveva dato lʼangelo, prima ancora che fosse concepito.
22 Quando giunse il momento del sacrificio al tempio per la purificazione di Maria, come è prescritto dalla legge di Mosè dopo la nascita di un bimbo, i genitori portarono Gesù a Gerusalemme per presentarlo al Signore, 23 perché la legge di Dio dice: «Se il primo figlio di una donna è un maschio, deve essere consacrato al Signore».
24 In tale occasione i genitori di Gesù offrirono il sacrificio stabilito dalla legge, che poteva essere un paio di tortore o due piccioni.
25 Quel giorno, cʼera nel tempio un uomo di nome Simeone, residente a Gerusalemme. Egli era un buon uomo, molto devoto, pieno di Spirito Santo, in attesa continua dellʼarrivo del Messia. 26 Lo Spirito Santo, infatti, gli aveva rivelato che non sarebbe morto, finché non avesse visto «il Cristo di Dio». 27 Quel giorno, lo Spirito Santo spinse Simeone a recarsi al tempio, e così, quando Maria e Giuseppe giunsero per presentare il piccolo Gesù al Signore, in ubbidienza alla legge, 28 Simeone era presente, e prese il bambino tra le braccia, lodando Dio.
29-31 «Signore», egli disse, «ora posso morire contento, perché lʼho visto, come tu mi avevi promesso! Ho visto il Salvatore, che tu hai dato al mondo. 32 Egli è la luce che splenderà su tutti i popoli, e sarà la gloria del tuo popolo Israele!»
33 Giuseppe e Maria restarono meravigliati per ciò che Simeone diceva di Gesù.
34-35 Simeone li benedì, ma poi disse a Maria: «Il dolore ti trapasserà lʼanima come una spada, perché questo bambino sarà respinto da molti in Israele, ma questo sarà la causa della loro rovina. Però per molti altri egli sarà fonte dʼimmensa gioia, e i pensieri più profondi di tanti cuori saranno rivelati».
36-37 Quel giorno, cʼera nel tempio anche la profetessa Anna, figlia di Fanuel, della tribù giudea di Aser. Anna era molto vecchia; dopo sette anni di matrimonio era rimasta vedova ed a quel tempo aveva ottantaquattro anni. Ella non sʼallontanava mai dal tempio, dove rimaneva giorno e notte, adorando Dio, pregando e spesso digiunando.
38 Sʼavvicinò proprio mentre Simeone stava parlando con Maria e Giuseppe. Anchʼella cominciò a ringraziare Dio e ad annunciare a tutti quelli che aspettavano la redenzione di Gerusalemme che il Messia era finalmente arrivato.
39 Quando i genitori di Gesù ebbero fatto tutto quanto è prescritto dalla legge di Dio, se ne tornarono a casa, a Nazaret in Galilea. 40 Il bambino divenne un ragazzo forte e robusto, pieno di sapienza. E Dio lo colmava di benedizioni.
41-42 Quando ebbe dodici anni, Gesù accompagnò i suoi genitori per la festa annuale di Pasqua, a cui partecipavano ogni anno. 43 A celebrazione conclusa, si rimisero in viaggio per ritornare a Nazaret, ma Gesù rimase a Gerusalemme. Il primo giorno, i suoi genitori non sʼaccorsero della sua mancanza, 44 perché pensavano che anche lui fosse in viaggio con la comitiva. Ma quando quella sera non si fece vivo, Maria e Giuseppe cominciarono a cercarlo fra parenti ed amici. 45 Non riuscendo a trovarlo, ritornarono a Gerusalemme, per continuare le ricerche.
46-47 Finalmente, dopo tre giorni, lo trovarono. Gesù era nel tempio, seduto fra i dottori della legge e parlava con loro di profondi argomenti, meravigliando tutti con la sua intelligenza e le sue risposte.
48 I suoi genitori non sapevano cosa pensare: «Figliuolo», gli disse Maria, «perché ci hai fatto questo? Tuo padre ed io eravamo molto preoccupati e ti cercavamo dappertutto!»
49 «Che bisogno avevate di cercare?» disse allora Gesù. «Non avete pensato che sarei stato qui nel tempio, nella casa di mio Padre?» 50 Ma essi non capivano che cosa volesse dire con quelle parole.
51 Poi Gesù tornò a Nazaret con loro e fu ubbidiente ai genitori. E sua madre serbava tutte queste cose nel cuore. 52 Così Gesù cresceva in statura e in saggezza, ed era amato da Dio e dagli uomini.

Nascita di Gesù e visita dei pastori
2 In quei giorni un decreto di Cesare Augusto ordinò che si facesse il censimento di tutta la terra. 2 Questo primo censimento fu fatto quando era governatore della Siria Quirinio. 3 Andavano tutti a farsi registrare, ciascuno nella sua città. 4 Anche Giuseppe, che era della casa e della famiglia di Davide, dalla città di Nazaret e dalla Galilea salì in Giudea alla città di Davide, chiamata Betlemme, 5 per farsi registrare insieme con Maria sua sposa, che era incinta. 6 Ora, mentre si trovavano in quel luogo, si compirono per lei i giorni del parto. 7 Diede alla luce il suo figlio primogenito, lo avvolse in fasce e lo depose in una mangiatoia, perché non c'era posto per loro nell'albergo.
8 C'erano in quella regione alcuni pastori che vegliavano di notte facendo la guardia al loro gregge. 9 Un angelo del Signore si presentò davanti a loro e la gloria del Signore li avvolse di luce. Essi furono presi da grande spavento, 10 ma l'angelo disse loro: «Non temete, ecco vi annunzio una grande gioia, che sarà di tutto il popolo: 11 oggi vi è nato nella città di Davide un salvatore, che è il Cristo Signore. 12 Questo per voi il segno: troverete un bambino avvolto in fasce, che giace in una mangiatoia». 13 E subito apparve con l'angelo una moltitudine dell'esercito celeste che lodava Dio e diceva:
14 «Gloria a Dio nel più alto dei cieli
e pace in terra agli uomini che egli ama».
15 Appena gli angeli si furono allontanati per tornare al cielo, i pastori dicevano fra loro: «Andiamo fino a Betlemme, vediamo questo avvenimento che il Signore ci ha fatto conoscere». 16 Andarono dunque senz'indugio e trovarono Maria e Giuseppe e il bambino, che giaceva nella mangiatoia. 17 E dopo averlo visto, riferirono ciò che del bambino era stato detto loro. 18 Tutti quelli che udirono, si stupirono delle cose che i pastori dicevano. 19 Maria, da parte sua, serbava tutte queste cose meditandole nel suo cuore.
20 I pastori poi se ne tornarono, glorificando e lodando Dio per tutto quello che avevano udito e visto, com'era stato detto loro.
Circoncisione di Gesù
21 Quando furon passati gli otto giorni prescritti per la circoncisione, gli fu messo nome Gesù, come era stato chiamato dall'angelo prima di essere concepito nel grembo della madre.
Presentazione di Gesù al tempio
22 Quando venne il tempo della loro purificazione secondo la Legge di Mosè, portarono il bambino a Gerusalemme per offrirlo al Signore, 23 come è scritto nella Legge del Signore: ogni maschio primogenito sarà sacro al Signore; 24 e per offrire in sacrificio una coppia di tortore o di giovani colombi, come prescrive la Legge del Signore.
25 Ora a Gerusalemme c'era un uomo di nome Simeone, uomo giusto e timorato di Dio, che aspettava il conforto d'Israele; 26 lo Spirito Santo che era sopra di lui, gli aveva preannunziato che non avrebbe visto la morte senza prima aver veduto il Messia del Signore. 27 Mosso dunque dallo Spirito, si recò al tempio; e mentre i genitori vi portavano il bambino Gesù per adempiere la Legge, 28 lo prese tra le braccia e benedisse Dio:
Il Nunc dimittis
29 «Ora lascia, o Signore, che il tuo servo
vada in pace secondo la tua parola;
30 perché i miei occhi han visto la tua salvezza,
31 preparata da te davanti a tutti i popoli,
32 luce per illuminare le genti
e gloria del tuo popolo Israele».
Profezia di Simeone
33 Il padre e la madre di Gesù si stupivano delle cose che si dicevano di lui. 34 Simeone li benedisse e parlò a Maria, sua madre: «Egli è qui per la rovina e la risurrezione di molti in Israele, segno di contraddizione 35 perché siano svelati i pensieri di molti cuori. E anche a te una spada trafiggerà l'anima».
Profezia di Anna
36 C'era anche una profetessa, Anna, figlia di Fanuèle, della tribù di Aser. Era molto avanzata in età, aveva vissuto col marito sette anni dal tempo in cui era ragazza, 37 era poi rimasta vedova e ora aveva ottantaquattro anni. Non si allontanava mai dal tempio, servendo Dio notte e giorno con digiuni e preghiere. 38 Sopraggiunta in quel momento, si mise anche lei a lodare Dio e parlava del bambino a quanti aspettavano la redenzione di Gerusalemme.
Vita nascosta di Gesù a Nazaret
39 Quando ebbero tutto compiuto secondo la legge del Signore, fecero ritorno in Galilea, alla loro città di Nazaret. 40 Il bambino cresceva e si fortificava, pieno di sapienza, e la grazia di Dio era sopra di lui.
Gesù tra i dottori
41 I suoi genitori si recavano tutti gli anni a Gerusalemme per la festa di Pasqua. 42 Quando egli ebbe dodici anni, vi salirono di nuovo secondo l'usanza; 43 ma trascorsi i giorni della festa, mentre riprendevano la via del ritorno, il fanciullo Gesù rimase a Gerusalemme, senza che i genitori se ne accorgessero. 44 Credendolo nella carovana, fecero una giornata di viaggio, e poi si misero a cercarlo tra i parenti e i conoscenti; 45 non avendolo trovato, tornarono in cerca di lui a Gerusalemme. 46 Dopo tre giorni lo trovarono nel tempio, seduto in mezzo ai dottori, mentre li ascoltava e li interrogava. 47 E tutti quelli che l'udivano erano pieni di stupore per la sua intelligenza e le sue risposte. 48 Al vederlo restarono stupiti e sua madre gli disse: «Figlio, perché ci hai fatto così? Ecco, tuo padre e io, angosciati, ti cercavamo». 49 Ed egli rispose: «Perché mi cercavate? Non sapevate che io devo occuparmi delle cose del Padre mio?». 50 Ma essi non compresero le sue parole.
Ancora la vita nascosta a Nazaret
51 Partì dunque con loro e tornò a Nazaret e stava loro sottomesso. Sua madre serbava tutte queste cose nel suo cuore. 52 E Gesù cresceva in sapienza, età e grazia davanti a Dio e agli uomini.

The Birth of Jesus
2 In those days Caesar Augustus(A) issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.(B) 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.)(C) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem(D) the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him(E) and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel(F) of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.(G) I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior(H) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,(I) the Lord.(J) 12 This will be a sign(K) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace(L) to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.(M) 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.(N) 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God(O) for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child,(P) he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.(Q)
Jesus Presented in the Temple
22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,(R) Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[b]),(S) 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[c](T)
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.(U) He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,(V) and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,(W) 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,(X)
you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.(Y)
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,(Z)
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”(AA)
33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:(AB) “This child is destined to cause the falling(AC) and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
36 There was also a prophet,(AD) Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[e](AE) She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.(AF) 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.(AG)
39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.(AH) 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.(AI)
The Boy Jesus at the Temple
41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.(AJ) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed(AK) at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother(AL) said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father(AM) and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[f](AN) 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.(AO)

2 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.
34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;
35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;
37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
