La porta per il cielo è stretta!

13 In quello stesso periodo vennero a riferire a Gesù che Pilato aveva fatto massacrare dei Giudei della Galilea, mentre stavano facendo sacrifici nel tempio di Gerusalemme.

«Pensate, forse, che quelli fossero più peccatori degli altri uomini della Galilea?» disse loro Gesù. «E per questo motivo abbiano dovuto soffrire in quel modo? Niente affatto! Ma non capite che anche voi perirete, se non abbandonate le vie malvagie e non vi convertite a Dio?

E che dite di quei diciotto uomini che morirono, schiacciati sotto la torre di Siloe? Erano forse loro i peggiori peccatori di Gerusalemme? Niente affatto! E anche voi, se non vi pentite, perirete!»

Poi raccontò questa parabola: «Un uomo, aveva piantato un albero di fico nel suo giardino e andava spesso a vedere se cʼerano dei frutti fra i rami, ma rimaneva sempre deluso. Finalmente ordinò al suo giardiniere di abbatterlo. “Ho aspettato tre anni, e non mi ha fatto un solo fico!” disse il padrone, “perché devo preoccuparmi ancora? Quellʼalbero occupa il posto che potremmo usare per unʼaltra pianta!” Ma il giardiniere rispose: “Signore, dagli unʼaltra possibilità. Lascialo ancora un altrʼanno! Voglio zappare per bene la terra intorno e dargli del concime in abbondanza! Se avremo dei fichi il prossimo anno, bene, altrimenti, lo farai tagliare!”»

10 Un sabato, Gesù stava insegnando in una sinagoga, 11 quando vide una donna paralitica che da diciotto anni stava piegata in due e non riusciva a raddrizzarsi.

12 Gesù la chiamò e le disse: «Donna, sei guarita dalla tua malattia!» 13 La toccò e, immediatamente, ella poté raddrizzarsi. Immaginate quanto lodò e ringraziò Dio quella poveretta!

14 Ma il capo della sinagoga rimase scandalizzato, perché Gesù aveva guarito la donna di sabato. Perciò si rivolse alla folla e gridò: «Ci sono sei giorni alla settimana per lavorare! Venite dunque in uno di quei giorni per farvi guarire, non di sabato!»

15 Ma il Signore gli rispose: «Ipocriti, non lavorate anche voi di sabato? Non è, forse, di sabato che slegate il vostro bestiame e lo portate fuori dalla stalla ad abbeverarsi? 16 È dunque sbagliato soltanto perché è sabato, liberare questa donna giudea dalla schiavitù in cui Satana lʼha tenuta per diciotto anni?»

17 Queste parole confusero i nemici di Gesù, mentre tutta la gente era alle stelle dalla gioia per le meravigliose cose che Gesù aveva fatto.

18 Di nuovo Gesù incominciò a parlare del Regno di Dio: «A che cosa rassomiglia il Regno?» diceva. «Come posso illustrarvelo? 19 È come un piccolo granello di senape seminato in un orto: ben presto diventa un albero tanto alto, che gli uccelli vanno a vivere fra i suoi rami». 20-21 Poi disse ancora: «Il Regno di Dio è come il lievito nella farina, che lavora di nascosto finché non ha reso la pasta gonfia e leggera».

22 Gesù andava di città in città, di villaggio in villaggio, e strada facendo insegnava alla gente. Intanto sʼavvicinava sempre più a Gerusalemme.

23 Un tale gli chiese: «Saranno soltanto pochi i salvati?»

Ed egli rispose: 24-25 «La porta per il cielo è stretta. Datevi da fare per entrarvi, perché sono tanti davvero quelli che cercano di entrare, ma quando il capo di casa avrà chiuso la porta, allora sarà troppo tardi! E se allora vi troverete fuori a bussare e a pregare: “Signore, aprici la porta!” egli vi risponderà: “Io non vi conosco!”

26 Allora voi direte: “Ma noi abbiamo mangiato e bevuto con te e tu hai insegnato per le nostre strade…”

27 Ed egli replicherà: “Ve lo ripeto, non vi conosco. Non potete entrare qui, colpevoli come siete. Andatevene!”

28 Allora piangerete, digrignando i denti, perché vedrete Abramo, Isacco, Giacobbe e tutti i profeti nel Regno di Dio, mentre voi ve ne starete fuori. 29 Verranno da oriente e da occidente, da settentrione e da mezzogiorno e siederanno a mensa nel Regno di Dio. 30 Tenete in mente questo: alcuni che sono disprezzati ora, saranno molto onorati dopo; ed alcuni che adesso sono tenuti in grande considerazione, in seguito saranno i meno importanti».

31 Poco dopo alcuni Farisei gli dissero: «Vaʼ via di qui, se vuoi salvare la pelle, perché Erode vuole ucciderti!»

32 Gesù rispose: «Andate a dire a quella volpe che continuerò a cacciare i demòni e a compiere miracoli di guarigione oggi e domani; e il terzo giorno raggiungerò la mia destinazione. 33 Certo, devo camminare oggi, domani e dopodomani, perché non può essere che un profeta di Dio sia ucciso, se non a Gerusalemme!

34 Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, città che uccidi i profeti e lapidi tutti quelli che Dio ti manda per aiutarti. Quante volte ho voluto riunire i tuoi figli, come la chioccia protegge la covata sotto le ali! Ma tu non hai voluto! 35 Ebbene, ora la vostra casa vi sarà lasciata deserta. E non mi rivedrete più, finché non direte: “Benvenuto colui che viene nel nome del Signore”».

13 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?

And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:

And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.

11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.

13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.

15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?

16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

18 Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?

19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.

20 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?

21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

22 And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.

23 Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,

24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

25 When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:

26 Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.

27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.

28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.

30 And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.

31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.

32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

33 Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

35 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Turn Back to God

13 About this same time Jesus was told that Pilate had given orders for some people from Galilee to be killed while they were offering sacrifices. Jesus replied:

Do you think that these people were worse sinners than everyone else in Galilee just because of what happened to them? Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also be killed. What about those 18 people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Do you think they were worse than everyone else in Jerusalem? Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also die.

A Story about a Fig Tree

Jesus then told them this story:

A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard. One day he went out to pick some figs, but he didn't find any. So he said to the gardener, “For three years I have come looking for figs on this tree, and I haven't found any yet. Chop it down! Why should it take up space?”

The gardener answered, “Master, leave it for another year. I'll dig around it and put some manure on it to make it grow. Maybe it will have figs on it next year. If it doesn't, you can have it cut down.”

Healing a Woman on the Sabbath

10 One Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in a synagogue, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by an evil spirit for 18 years. She was completely bent over and could not straighten up. 12 When Jesus saw the woman, he called her over and said, “You are now well.” 13 He placed his hands on her, and at once she stood up straight and praised God.

14 (A) The man in charge of the synagogue was angry because Jesus had healed someone on the Sabbath. So he said to the people, “Each week has six days when we can work. Come and be healed on one of those days, but not on the Sabbath.”

15 The Lord replied, “Are you trying to fool someone? Won't any one of you untie your ox or donkey and lead it out to drink on a Sabbath? 16 This woman belongs to the family of Abraham, but Satan has kept her bound for 18 years. Isn't it right to set her free on the Sabbath?” 17 Jesus' words made his enemies ashamed. But everyone else in the crowd was happy about the wonderful things he was doing.

A Mustard Seed and Yeast

(Matthew 13.31-33; Mark 4.30-32)

18 Jesus said, “What is God's kingdom like? What can I compare it with? 19 It is like what happens when someone plants a mustard seed in a garden. The seed grows as big as a tree, and birds nest in its branches.”

20 Then Jesus said, “What can I compare God's kingdom with? 21 It is like what happens when a woman mixes yeast into three batches of flour. Finally, all the dough rises.”

The Narrow Door

(Matthew 7.13,14,21-23)

22 As Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he taught the people in the towns and villages. 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?”

Jesus answered:

24 Do all you can to go in by the narrow door! A lot of people will try to get in, but will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and locks the door, you will be left standing outside. You will knock on the door and say, “Sir, open the door for us!”

But the owner will answer, “I don't know a thing about you!”

26 Then you will start saying, “We dined with you, and you taught in our streets.”

27 (B) But he will say, “I really don't know who you are! Get away from me, you evil people!”

28 (C)(D) Then when you have been thrown outside, you will weep and grit your teeth because you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in God's kingdom. 29 People will come from all directions and sit down to feast in God's kingdom. 30 (E) There the ones who are now least important will be the most important, and those who are now most important will be least important.

Jesus and Herod

31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “You had better get away from here, because Herod[a] wants to kill you!”

32 Jesus said to them:

Go tell that fox, “I am going to force out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and three days later I'll be through.” 33 But I am going on my way today and tomorrow and the next day. After all, Jerusalem is the place where prophets are killed.

Jesus Loves Jerusalem

(Matthew 23.37-39)

34 (F) Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me. 35 (G) Now your temple will be deserted. You won't see me again until the time when you say,

“Blessed is the one who comes
    in the name of the Lord.”
