Risurrezione di Lazzaro
11 Era allora malato un certo Lazzaro di Betània, il villaggio di Maria e di Marta sua sorella. 2 Maria era quella che aveva cosparso di olio profumato il Signore e gli aveva asciugato i piedi con i suoi capelli; suo fratello Lazzaro era malato. 3 Le sorelle mandarono dunque a dirgli: «Signore, ecco, il tuo amico è malato».
4 All'udire questo, Gesù disse: «Questa malattia non è per la morte, ma per la gloria di Dio, perché per essa il Figlio di Dio venga glorificato». 5 Gesù voleva molto bene a Marta, a sua sorella e a Lazzaro. 6 Quand'ebbe dunque sentito che era malato, si trattenne due giorni nel luogo dove si trovava. 7 Poi, disse ai discepoli: «Andiamo di nuovo in Giudea!». 8 I discepoli gli dissero: «Rabbì, poco fa i Giudei cercavano di lapidarti e tu ci vai di nuovo?». 9 Gesù rispose: «Non sono forse dodici le ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo; 10 ma se invece uno cammina di notte, inciampa, perché gli manca la luce». 11 Così parlò e poi soggiunse loro: «Il nostro amico Lazzaro s'è addormentato; ma io vado a svegliarlo». 12 Gli dissero allora i discepoli: «Signore, se s'è addormentato, guarirà». 13 Gesù parlava della morte di lui, essi invece pensarono che si riferisse al riposo del sonno. 14 Allora Gesù disse loro apertamente: «Lazzaro è morto 15 e io sono contento per voi di non essere stato là, perché voi crediate. Orsù, andiamo da lui!». 16 Allora Tommaso, chiamato Dìdimo, disse ai condiscepoli: «Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui!».
17 Venne dunque Gesù e trovò Lazzaro che era gia da quattro giorni nel sepolcro. 18 Betània distava da Gerusalemme meno di due miglia 19 e molti Giudei erano venuti da Marta e Maria per consolarle per il loro fratello. 20 Marta dunque, come seppe che veniva Gesù, gli andò incontro; Maria invece stava seduta in casa. 21 Marta disse a Gesù: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto! 22 Ma anche ora so che qualunque cosa chiederai a Dio, egli te la concederà». 23 Gesù le disse: «Tuo fratello risusciterà». 24 Gli rispose Marta: «So che risusciterà nell'ultimo giorno». 25 Gesù le disse: «Io sono la risurrezione e la vita; chi crede in me, anche se muore, vivrà; 26 chiunque vive e crede in me, non morrà in eterno. Credi tu questo?». 27 Gli rispose: «Sì, o Signore, io credo che tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio che deve venire nel mondo».
28 Dopo queste parole se ne andò a chiamare di nascosto Maria, sua sorella, dicendo: «Il Maestro è qui e ti chiama». 29 Quella, udito ciò, si alzò in fretta e andò da lui. 30 Gesù non era entrato nel villaggio, ma si trovava ancora là dove Marta gli era andata incontro. 31 Allora i Giudei che erano in casa con lei a consolarla, quando videro Maria alzarsi in fretta e uscire, la seguirono pensando: «Va al sepolcro per piangere là». 32 Maria, dunque, quando giunse dov'era Gesù, vistolo si gettò ai suoi piedi dicendo: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto!». 33 Gesù allora quando la vide piangere e piangere anche i Giudei che erano venuti con lei, si commosse profondamente, si turbò e disse: 34 «Dove l'avete posto?». Gli dissero: «Signore, vieni a vedere!». 35 Gesù scoppiò in pianto. 36 Dissero allora i Giudei: «Vedi come lo amava!». 37 Ma alcuni di loro dissero: «Costui che ha aperto gli occhi al cieco non poteva anche far sì che questi non morisse?».
38 Intanto Gesù, ancora profondamente commosso, si recò al sepolcro; era una grotta e contro vi era posta una pietra. 39 Disse Gesù: «Togliete la pietra!». Gli rispose Marta, la sorella del morto: «Signore, gia manda cattivo odore, poiché è di quattro giorni». 40 Le disse Gesù: «Non ti ho detto che, se credi, vedrai la gloria di Dio?». 41 Tolsero dunque la pietra. Gesù allora alzò gli occhi e disse: «Padre, ti ringrazio che mi hai ascoltato. 42 Io sapevo che sempre mi dai ascolto, ma l'ho detto per la gente che mi sta attorno, perché credano che tu mi hai mandato». 43 E, detto questo, gridò a gran voce: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!». 44 Il morto uscì, con i piedi e le mani avvolti in bende, e il volto coperto da un sudario. Gesù disse loro: «Scioglietelo e lasciatelo andare».
I capi Giudei decidono la morte di Gesù
45 Molti dei Giudei che erano venuti da Maria, alla vista di quel che egli aveva compiuto, credettero in lui. 46 Ma alcuni andarono dai farisei e riferirono loro quel che Gesù aveva fatto. 47 Allora i sommi sacerdoti e i farisei riunirono il sinedrio e dicevano: «Che facciamo? Quest'uomo compie molti segni. 48 Se lo lasciamo fare così, tutti crederanno in lui e verranno i Romani e distruggeranno il nostro luogo santo e la nostra nazione». 49 Ma uno di loro, di nome Caifa, che era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, disse loro: «Voi non capite nulla 50 e non considerate come sia meglio che muoia un solo uomo per il popolo e non perisca la nazione intera». 51 Questo però non lo disse da se stesso, ma essendo sommo sacerdote profetizzò che Gesù doveva morire per la nazione 52 e non per la nazione soltanto, ma anche per riunire insieme i figli di Dio che erano dispersi. 53 Da quel giorno dunque decisero di ucciderlo.
54 Gesù pertanto non si faceva più vedere in pubblico tra i Giudei; egli si ritirò di là nella regione vicina al deserto, in una città chiamata Efraim, dove si trattenne con i suoi discepoli.
6. LA FINE DEL MINISTERO PUBBLICO E I PRELIMINARI DELL'ULTIMA PASQUA
L'avvicinarsi della Pasqua
55 Era vicina la Pasqua dei Giudei e molti dalla regione andarono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per purificarsi. 56 Essi cercavano Gesù e stando nel tempio dicevano tra di loro: «Che ve ne pare? Non verrà egli alla festa?». 57 Intanto i sommi sacerdoti e i farisei avevano dato ordine che chiunque sapesse dove si trovava lo denunziasse, perché essi potessero prenderlo.

11 Un uomo di nome Lazzaro era ammalato. Viveva a Betania con le sue sorelle Marta e Maria. 2 Maria era la donna che poi cosparse di profumo i piedi del Signore e li asciugò con i suoi capelli. 3 Le due sorelle, mandarono a chiamare Gesù con questo messaggio: «Signore, il tuo caro amico è grave!»
4 Quando Gesù seppe della cosa, rispose: «Lazzaro non morirà di questa malattia, che servirà, invece, a dare gloria a Dio, perché sia lodato suo Figlio!»
5-6 Nonostante volesse molto bene a Marta, Maria e Lazzaro, Gesù si trattenne dovʼera per altri due giorni, anziché andare subito da loro. 7 Finalmente disse ai discepoli: «Torniamo in Giudea».
8 «Maestro», osservarono i discepoli, «soltanto pochi giorni fa i capi religiosi giudei volevano ucciderti. E tu ci vuoi tornare?»
9 Gesù rispose: «Ci sono dodici ore di luce al giorno, durante le quali si può camminare con sicurezza, senza inciampare. 10 Di notte, invece, cʼè pericolo di fare un passo falso, perché è buio». 11 Poi aggiunse: «Il nostro amico Lazzaro dorme, ma ora vado a svegliarlo!»
12-13 Allora i discepoli, pensando che Gesù dicesse che Lazzaro stava riposando, commentarono: «Meglio così, vuol dire che sta migliorando!» Il Signore, invece, intendeva dire che Lazzaro era morto.
14 Allora disse chiaramente: «Lazzaro è morto! 15 Ma sono contento per voi che non ero là, perché ora avrete unʼaltra occasione per credere in me. Venite, andiamo da lui!»
16 Tommaso, detto «il gemello», disse ai compagni: «Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui!»
17 Quando arrivarono a Betania, seppero che Lazzaro era già stato sepolto da quattro giorni. 18 Betania dista circa tre chilometri da Gerusalemme e 19 molti Giudei erano venuti a fare le condoglianze e a consolare Marta e Maria. 20 Quando Marta sentì che stava arrivando Gesù, gli corse incontro; Maria, invece, rimase a casa.
21-22 Marta disse a Gesù: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto! Ma anche adesso non è troppo tardi, so che basta che tu glielo chieda, e Dio lo resusciterà!»
23 Gesù le disse: «Tuo fratello vivrà!»
24 «Certo», replicò Marta, «il giorno della resurrezione, come tutti!»
25-26 Gesù le disse: «Io sono quello che resuscita i morti e li riporta alla vita. Chi crede in me, anche se muore, come qualsiasi altro, vivrà; avrà vita eterna per aver creduto in me e non perirà mai. Lo credi tu, Marta?»
27 «Sì, Maestro», rispose la donna. «Io credo che tu sei il Messia, il Figlio di Dio, quello che abbiamo aspettato per tanto tempo».
28 Detto ciò, Marta tornò da Maria e, prendendola in disparte, le disse: «Il Maestro è qui e vuole vederti». 29 Maria sʼaffrettò a correre da Gesù.
30 Gesù non era ancora entrato nel villaggio, ma era rimasto là, dove Marta lo aveva incontrato. 31 Quando i Giudei, che erano venuti per consolare Maria, la videro allontanarsi di fretta, pensarono che stesse andando a piangere sulla tomba di Lazzaro, così la seguirono.
32 Maria raggiunse Gesù, gli si buttò ai piedi e disse: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello sarebbe ancora vivo!»
33 Quando Gesù vide Maria e i Giudei che piangevano, si sentì profondamente turbato: 34 «Dovʼè sepolto?» domandò.
«Vieni a vedere», risposero. 35 Allora Gesù pianse.
36 «Erano grandi amici», commentava la gente. «Guardate come gli voleva bene!»
37-38 Ma alcuni di loro aggiunsero: «Se ha guarito un cieco, perché non ha fatto in modo che Lazzaro non morisse?!» Gesù si sentì di nuovo turbato. Arrivarono alla tomba, una grotta chiusa da una grossa pietra rotonda.
39 «Spostate la pietra!» ordinò Gesù.
A queste parole Marta, la sorella del morto, obiettò: «Signore, è morto già da quattro giorni, ormai puzza!» 40 Ma Gesù replicò: «Marta, non ti ho detto che se crederai, vedrai la gloria di Dio?»
41 Levarono, quindi, la pietra. Allora Gesù alzò gli occhi al cielo e disse: «Padre, grazie di avermi ascoltato! 42 Tu mi ascolti sempre, lo so, ma lʼho detto per tutte le persone qui presenti, perché credano che sei stato tu a mandarmi». 43 Poi gridò: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!»
44 E Lazzaro uscì: tutto fasciato, con la faccia coperta da un sudario. Gesù disse loro: «Toglietegli le bende e lasciatelo andare!»
45 A questo miracolo, molti Giudei che avevano seguito Maria, credettero in lui. 46 Altri, invece, andarono dai Farisei a riferire lʼaccaduto.
Condanna a morte
47 Allora i capi sacerdoti e i Farisei si riunirono a consiglio per discutere la situazione. «Che facciamo?» si chiedevano. «Questʼuomo fa molti miracoli! 48 Se lo lasciamo fare, tutta la popolazione lo seguirà, allora lʼesercito romano verrà a sterminarci e a occupare il nostro paese!»
49 Uno di loro, Caifa, quellʼanno in carica di sommo sacerdote, disse: «Stupidi idioti! 50 Che sia lui solo a morire per tutti! Perché mai dovrebbe finire in rovina tutta la nazione?»
51 La profezia che Gesù doveva morire per tutti venne pronunciata da Caifa in veste di sommo sacerdote. Ciò che disse fu per ispirazione, non frutto di una sua personale riflessione. 52 Così fu predetto che la morte di Gesù non sarebbe stata soltanto a favore dʼIsraele, ma di tutti i figli di Dio sparsi nel mondo. 53 Da quel momento in poi i capi giudei si dettero da fare per ucciderlo.
54 A questo punto Gesù non si fece più vedere in pubblico, e si allontanò da Gerusalemme. Raggiunti i confini del deserto, si recò nel villaggio di Efraim, dove rimase con i discepoli.
55 La Pasqua, giorno sacro ai Giudei, era vicina, e molta gente di campagna arrivava a Gerusalemme con qualche giorno di anticipo, per procedere alla cerimonia di purificazione, prima della festa. 56 Volevano vedere Gesù nel tempio e il quesito del momento era: «Verrà o non verrà per la Pasqua?» 57 Nel frattempo, i capi sacerdoti e i Farisei avevano dato ordine che, se qualcuno avesse visto Gesù, lo segnalasse immediatamente, perché volevano arrestarlo.

Gesú risuscita Lazzaro di Betania
11 (A)C'era un ammalato, un certo *Lazzaro di *Betania, del villaggio di *Maria e di *Marta sua sorella. 2 Maria era quella che unse il Signore di olio profumato e gli asciugò i piedi con i suoi capelli; Lazzaro, suo fratello, era malato. 3 Le sorelle dunque mandarono a dire a Gesú: «Signore, ecco, colui che tu ami è malato». 4 Gesú, udito ciò, disse: «Questa malattia non è per la morte, ma è per la gloria di Dio, affinché per mezzo di essa il *Figlio di Dio sia glorificato».
5 Or Gesú amava Marta e sua sorella e Lazzaro; 6 com'ebbe udito che egli era malato, si trattenne ancora due giorni nel luogo dove si trovava[a]. 7 Poi disse ai discepoli: «Torniamo in *Giudea!» 8 I discepoli gli dissero: «Maestro, proprio adesso i Giudei cercavano di lapidarti, e tu vuoi tornare là?» 9 Gesú rispose: «Non vi sono dodici *ore nel giorno? 17 Gesú dunque, arrivato, trovò che Lazzaro era già da quattro giorni nel sepolcro. 18 Or Betania distava da *Gerusalemme circa quindici *stadi[b], 19 e molti Giudei erano andati da Marta e Maria per consolarle del loro fratello.
20 Come Marta ebbe udito che Gesú veniva, gli andò incontro; ma Maria stava seduta in casa. 21 Marta dunque disse a Gesú: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto; 22 e anche adesso so che tutto quello che chiederai a Dio, Dio te lo darà». 23 Gesú le disse: «Tuo fratello risusciterà». 24 Marta gli disse: «Lo so che risusciterà, nella risurrezione, nell'ultimo giorno». 25 Gesú le disse: «Io sono la risurrezione e la vita; chi crede in me, anche se muore, vivrà; 26 e chiunque vive e crede in me, non morirà mai. Credi tu questo?» 27 Ella gli disse: «Sí, Signore, io credo che tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio che doveva venire nel mondo».
28 Detto questo, se ne andò, e chiamò di nascosto Maria, sua sorella, dicendole: «Il Maestro è qui, e ti chiama». 29 Ed ella, udito questo, si alzò in fretta e andò da lui. 30 Or Gesú non era ancora entrato nel villaggio, ma era sempre nel luogo dove Marta lo aveva incontrato. 31 Quando dunque i Giudei, che erano in casa con lei e la consolavano, videro che Maria si era alzata in fretta ed era uscita, la seguirono, supponendo che si recasse al sepolcro a piangere.
32 Appena Maria fu giunta dov'era Gesú e l'ebbe visto, gli si gettò ai piedi dicendogli: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto». 33 Quando Gesú la vide piangere, e vide piangere anche i Giudei che erano venuti con lei, fremette nello spirito, si turbò e disse: 34 «Dove l'avete deposto?» Essi gli dissero: «Signore, vieni a vedere!»
35 Gesú pianse.
36 Perciò i Giudei dicevano: «Guarda come l'amava!» 37 Ma alcuni di loro dicevano: «Non poteva, lui che ha aperto gli occhi al cieco, far sí che questi non morisse?»
38 Gesú dunque, fremendo di nuovo in sé stesso, andò al sepolcro. Era una grotta, e una pietra era posta all'apertura. 39 Gesú disse: «Togliete la pietra!» Marta, la sorella del morto, gli disse: «Signore, egli puzza già, perché siamo al quarto giorno». 40 Gesú le disse: «Non ti ho detto che se credi, vedrai la gloria di Dio?» 41 Tolsero dunque la pietra. Gesú, alzati gli occhi al cielo, disse: «Padre, ti ringrazio perché mi hai esaudito. 42 Io sapevo bene che tu mi esaudisci sempre; ma ho detto questo a motivo della folla che mi circonda, affinché credano che tu mi hai mandato». 43 Detto questo, gridò ad alta voce: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!» 44 Il morto uscí, con i piedi e le mani avvolti da fasce, e il viso coperto da un sudario. Gesú disse loro: «Scioglietelo e lasciatelo andare».
45 Perciò molti Giudei, che erano venuti da Maria e avevano visto le cose fatte da Gesú, credettero in lui. 46 Ma alcuni di loro andarono dai *farisei e raccontarono loro quello che Gesú aveva fatto.
Congiura contro Gesú
47 (B)I capi dei *sacerdoti e i farisei, quindi, riunirono il *sinedrio e dicevano: «Che facciamo? Perché quest'uomo fa molti segni miracolosi[c]. 48 Se lo lasciamo fare, tutti crederanno in lui; e i Romani verranno e ci distruggeranno come città[d] e come nazione». 49 Uno di loro, *Caiafa, che era sommo sacerdote quell'anno, disse loro: «Voi non capite nulla, 50 e non riflettete come torni a vostro vantaggio che un uomo solo muoia per il popolo e non perisca tutta la nazione». 51 Or egli non disse questo di suo; ma, siccome era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, *profetizzò che Gesú doveva morire per la nazione; 52 e non soltanto per la nazione, ma anche per riunire in uno i figli di Dio dispersi.
53 Da quel giorno dunque deliberarono di farlo morire. 54 Gesú quindi non andava piú apertamente tra i Giudei, ma si ritirò nella regione vicina al deserto, in una città chiamata Efraim; e là si trattenne con i suoi discepoli.
55 (C)La Pasqua dei Giudei era vicina e molti di quella regione salirono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per purificarsi. 56 Cercavano dunque Gesú; e, stando nel *tempio, dicevano tra di loro: «Che ve ne pare? Verrà alla *festa?» 57 Or i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei avevano dato ordine che se qualcuno sapesse dov'egli era, ne facesse denuncia perché potessero arrestarlo.

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(AK)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

11 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.
34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35 Jesus wept.
36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55 And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
