“Ôi lạy Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời vĩ đại và đáng kinh, Ðấng giữ giao ước và tỏ lòng thương xót đối với ai yêu kính Ngài và vâng giữ các điều răn Ngài. 5 Chúng con đã phạm tội và có lỗi. Chúng con đã làm điều gian ác và phản nghịch. Chúng con đã lìa bỏ những điều răn và luật lệ Ngài. 6 Chúng con đã không nghe lời các vị tiên tri, tức các tôi tớ Ngài, những người đã nhân danh Ngài mà nói với các vua, các quan, các bậc tiền bối, và toàn dân trong nước.

7 Lạy Chúa, nguyện lẽ công chính thuộc về Ngài, còn sự hổ mặt thuộc về chúng con như đã thấy ngày nay, tức trên người Giu-đa, dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem, và mọi người I-sơ-ra-ên, và trên mọi người ở gần hoặc ở xa, trong mọi xứ mà Ngài đã đuổi họ đến, vì họ đã phạm tội bất trung và chống nghịch Ngài.

8 Lạy Chúa, nguyện sự hổ mặt đổ trên chúng con, trên các vua chúng con, các quan chúng con, và các bậc tiền bối chúng con, vì chúng con đã phạm tội nghịch lại Ngài.

9 Nguyện ơn thương xót và ơn tha thứ thuộc về Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của chúng con, vì chúng con đã phản nghịch Ngài. 10 Chúng con đã không vâng theo tiếng Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của chúng con, để vâng giữ luật pháp Ngài mà Ngài đã dùng các tôi tớ Ngài, tức các vị tiên tri Ngài, giải bày cho chúng con.

11 Toàn dân I-sơ-ra-ên đã vi phạm luật pháp Ngài và lìa bỏ luật pháp ấy bằng cách từ chối vâng theo tiếng Ngài. Vì thế những lời nguyền rủa và thề nguyền ghi trong luật pháp của Môi-se tôi tớ Ðức Chúa Trời đã đổ xuống trên chúng con, vì chúng con đã phạm tội nghịch lại Ngài. 12 Ngài đã thực hiện lời Ngài cảnh cáo chúng con và những người lãnh đạo chúng con, bằng cách giáng xuống Giê-ru-sa-lem một cơn đại họa chưa từng thấy dưới trời. 13 Thật đúng y như đã chép trong luật pháp của Môi-se; tất cả các thảm họa ấy đã đến trên chúng con. Thế mà chúng con vẫn không chịu tìm cầu ơn thương xót của Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của chúng con, mà lìa bỏ tội lỗi, và tỉnh ngộ nhờ chân lý Ngài. 14 Vì thế Chúa đã để dành thảm họa ấy và đã giáng nó trên chúng con. Về việc nầy, Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của chúng con, hoàn toàn đúng trong mọi việc Ngài làm, vì chúng con đã không vâng theo tiếng Ngài.

15 Giờ đây, lạy Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của chúng con, Ðấng đã đem dân Ngài ra khỏi đất Ai-cập bằng cánh tay quyền năng và đã làm cho danh Ngài được lẫy lừng cho đến ngày nay; chúng con đã phạm tội, chúng con đã làm điều ác. 16 Lạy Chúa, dựa theo mọi điều công chính Ngài đã thực hiện, cầu xin Ngài quay cơn giận và cơn thịnh nộ Ngài khỏi Giê-ru-sa-lem, thành của Ngài, núi thánh của Ngài; bởi vì tội lỗi của chúng con và sự gian ác của tổ tiên chúng con mà Giê-ru-sa-lem và dân Ngài đã trở thành cớ sỉ nhục giữa mọi nước láng giềng của chúng con.

17 Vậy, giờ đây, lạy Ðức Chúa Trời của chúng con, xin lắng nghe lời cầu nguyện và lời van xin của tôi tớ Ngài. Lạy Chúa, vì cớ danh Ngài, nguyện thánh nhan Ngài tỏa rạng trên nơi thánh Ngài đang đổ nát. 18 Lạy Ðức Chúa Trời của con, xin nghiêng tai và nghe. Xin đoái xem và nhìn thấy cảnh tan hoang của chúng con và của thành mang danh Ngài. Chúng con không cậy vào đức công chính của chúng con để cầu xin Ngài, nhưng xin cậy vào ơn thương xót lớn lao của Ngài. 19 Lạy Chúa, xin lắng nghe; lạy Chúa, xin tha thứ; lạy Chúa, xin đoái thương và hành động. Vì cớ danh Ngài, xin đừng trì hoãn, lạy Ðức Chúa Trời của con, và cũng vì cớ thành của Ngài và dân mang danh Ngài nữa.”

Daniel’s Prayer

9 “In the first year of the reign of Darius son of Ahasuerus, a descendant of the Medes, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans[a]— 2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, noted in the Scripture the total years that were assigned[b] by the message from the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem: 70 years.

3 “So I turned my attention to the Lord God, seeking him in prayer and supplication, accompanied with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. 4 I prayed to the Lord my God, confessing and saying:

‘Lord! Great and awesome God, who keeps his[c] covenant and gracious love for those who love him and obey his commandments, 5 we’ve sinned, we’ve practiced evil, we’ve acted wickedly, and we’ve rebelled, turning away from your commands and from your regulations. 6 Furthermore, we haven’t listened to your servants, the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, to our officials, to our ancestors, and to all of the people of the land.

7 ‘To you, Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us, open humiliation—even to this day, to the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, both those who are nearby and those who are far away in all the lands to which you drove them because of their unfaithful acts that they committed against you.

8 ‘Open humiliation belongs to us, Lord, to our kings, our officials, and our ancestors, because we’ve sinned against you. 9 But to the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we’ve rebelled against him 10 and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws that he gave us through his servants the prophets. 11 And all Israel flouted your Law, turning aside from it and not obeying your voice. Because we’ve sinned against him, the curse has been poured upon us, along with the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God.

12 ‘He has confirmed his accusation[d] that he spoke against us and against our rulers who governed us by bringing upon us great calamity, because nowhere in the universe[e] has anything been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. 13 As it’s written in the Law of Moses,[f] all this calamity has befallen us, but we still haven’t sought the Lord our God by turning from our lawlessness to pay attention to your truth. 14 So the Lord watched for the right time to bring the calamity upon us, because the Lord our God is righteous regarding everything he does, but we have not obeyed his voice.

15 ‘And now, Lord our God, who brought your people from the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made a name for yourself that remains to this day—we’ve sinned. We’ve acted wickedly. 16 Lord, in view of all your righteous acts, please turn your anger and wrath away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. Because of our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people have become an embarrassment to all of those around us.

17 ‘So now, O[g] God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his requests, and look with favor on your desolate sanctuary, for the sake of the Lord. 18 Turn your ear and listen, O God. Open your eyes and look at our desolation and at the city that is called by your name. We’re not presenting our requests before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great compassion.

19 ‘Lord, listen!

‘Lord, forgive!

‘Lord, take note and take action!

‘For your own sake, don’t delay, my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.’”

Gabriel’s Answer: The Seventy Weeks

20 “While I was still speaking in prayer, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and placing my request in the presence of the Lord my God on behalf of the holy mountain of God— 21 while I was still speaking, Gabriel, the man of God whom I had seen in the previous vision, appeared to me about the time of the evening offering. 22 He gave instructions, and this is what he spoke to me:

‘Daniel, I’ve now come to give you insight and understanding. 23 Because you’re highly regarded, the answer was issued when you began your prayer, and I’ve come to tell you. Pay attention to my message and you’ll understand the vision. 24 Seventy weeks[h] have been decreed concerning your people and your holy city: to restrain transgression, to put an end to sin, to make atonement for lawlessness, to establish everlasting righteousness, to conclude vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy Place. 25 So be informed and discern that seven weeks and 62 weeks will elapse[i] from the issuance of the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed Commander.[j] The plaza and moat will be rebuilt, though in troubled times. 26 Then after the 62 weeks, the anointed one[k] will be cut down (but not for himself).[l] Then the people of the Coming Commander[m] will destroy both the city and the Sanctuary. Its ending will come like a flood, and until the end there will be war, with desolations having been decreed. 27 He will make a binding covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he will suspend both the sacrifice and grain offerings. Destructive people will cause desolation on the uttermost edge[n] of the Sanctuary[o] until it is complete and what has been decreed is poured out on the desolator.’”

Daniel’s Prayer

9 In the first year of Darius(A) son of Xerxes[a](B) (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian[b] kingdom— 2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy(C) years. 3 So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting,(D) and in sackcloth and ashes.(E)

4 I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:(F)

“Lord, the great and awesome God,(G) who keeps his covenant of love(H) with those who love him and keep his commandments, 5 we have sinned(I) and done wrong.(J) We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away(K) from your commands and laws.(L) 6 We have not listened(M) to your servants the prophets,(N) who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors,(O) and to all the people of the land.

7 “Lord, you are righteous,(P) but this day we are covered with shame(Q)—the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered(R) us because of our unfaithfulness(S) to you.(T) 8 We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you.(U) 9 The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving,(V) even though we have rebelled against him;(W) 10 we have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.(X) 11 All Israel has transgressed(Y) your law(Z) and turned away, refusing to obey you.

“Therefore the curses(AA) and sworn judgments(AB) written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned(AC) against you. 12 You have fulfilled(AD) the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing on us great disaster.(AE) Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like(AF) what has been done to Jerusalem.(AG) 13 Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord(AH) our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth.(AI) 14 The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster(AJ) on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does;(AK) yet we have not obeyed him.(AL)

15 “Now, Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand(AM) and who made for yourself a name(AN) that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong. 16 Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts,(AO) turn away(AP) your anger and your wrath(AQ) from Jerusalem,(AR) your city, your holy hill.(AS) Our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn(AT) to all those around us.

17 “Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, Lord, look with favor(AU) on your desolate sanctuary. 18 Give ear,(AV) our God, and hear;(AW) open your eyes and see(AX) the desolation of the city that bears your Name.(AY) We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.(AZ) 19 Lord, listen! Lord, forgive!(BA) Lord, hear and act! For your sake,(BB) my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”

The Seventy “Sevens”

20 While I was speaking and praying, confessing(BC) my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the Lord my God for his holy hill(BD)— 21 while I was still in prayer, Gabriel,(BE) the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.(BF) 22 He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding.(BG) 23 As soon as you began to pray,(BH) a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed.(BI) Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:(BJ)

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’[c] are decreed for your people and your holy city(BK) to finish[d] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone(BL) for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness,(BM) to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[e]

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild(BN) Jerusalem until the Anointed One,[f](BO) the ruler,(BP) comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.(BQ) 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death(BR) and will have nothing.[g] The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood:(BS) War will continue until the end, and desolations(BT) have been decreed.(BU) 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’[h] In the middle of the ‘seven’[i] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple[j] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed(BV) is poured out on him.[k]”[l]
