O bezerro de ouro
32 O povo viu que Moisés estava demorando muito para descer do monte. Então se reuniram em volta de Aarão e lhe disseram:
—Faça para nós um deus[a] que nos guie, porque não sabemos o que aconteceu com Moisés, o homem que nos tirou do Egito.
2 Aarão disse ao povo:
—Tirem os brincos de ouro que as suas esposas, filhos e filhas têm nas orelhas e tragam-nos a mim.
3 E todos tiraram os seus brincos de ouro e os levaram a Aarão. 4 Aarão recebeu o ouro, o derreteu e, com uma ferramenta própria, fez um ídolo na forma de um bezerro. E todo o povo disse:
—Israel, aqui está o deus que os tirou do Egito!
5 Quando Aarão viu aquilo, construiu um altar em frente do bezerro e anunciou:
—Amanhã celebraremos uma festa em honra do SENHOR.
6 Na manhã seguinte o povo se levantou cedo e ofereceu sacrifícios queimados e sacrifícios de comunhão. Depois o povo sentou-se para comer e beber e se levantou para se divertir.
7 Então o SENHOR disse a Moisés:
—Desça depressa, porque o povo que você tirou do Egito cometeu um grande pecado. 8 Esqueceram-se daquilo que eu tinha lhes ordenado. Eles fizeram um bezerro de ouro, inclinaram-se diante dele em adoração e lhe ofereceram sacrifícios, e disseram: “Israel, aqui está o deus que os tirou do Egito!”
9 O SENHOR disse a Moisés:
10 —Agora vi que este povo é teimoso e rebelde. Portanto, deixe-me, porque estou muito irritado contra eles e vou destruí-los. Mas farei de você uma grande nação.
11 Moisés implorou ao SENHOR, seu Deus, dizendo:
—Ó SENHOR, por que está tão irritado contra o seu povo, o povo que tirou do Egito com grande força e poder? 12 Se o Senhor fizer isso, o povo do Egito irá dizer: “Foi para lhes fazer mal que os libertou. Foi para matá-los nas montanhas e removê-los da superfície da terra”. Não esteja tão irritado e abandone a ideia de fazer mal ao seu povo. 13 Lembre-se dos seus servos Abraão, Isaque e Israel. O Senhor jurou pelo seu nome e prometeu a eles: “Multiplicarei os seus descendentes e farei com que vocês sejam tantos como as estrelas do céu. E esta terra que lhes prometi será dos seus descendentes para sempre”.
14 Então o SENHOR teve compaixão e não destruiu o seu povo como tinha dito que ia fazer.
15 Então Moisés desceu do monte levando nas mãos as duas tábuas de pedra do Testemunho, que estavam escritas nos dois lados, na frente e atrás. 16 As tábuas de pedra tinham sido feitas por Deus. E os mandamentos que estavam gravados nelas tinham sido escritos por Deus.
17 Quando Josué ouviu os gritos do povo, disse a Moisés:
—Há gritos de guerra no acampamento.
18 Moisés respondeu:
—Não ouço gritos de vitória, nem lamentos de derrota. O que ouço é o som de pessoas cantando.
19 Moisés ficou muito irritado quando chegou ao acampamento e viu o bezerro de ouro e o povo dançando. Então atirou as tábuas ao chão, e elas se partiram em pedaços junto ao monte. 20 E Moisés agarrou o bezerro que o povo tinha feito, o lançou ao fogo e fez com que se tornasse pó. Depois espalhou o pó na água e fez com que os israelitas bebessem daquela água.
21 E Moisés perguntou a Aarão:
—Que mal lhe fez o povo para que o tenha feito cometer um pecado tão grande?
22 Aarão respondeu:
—Senhor, não se irrite comigo. Bem sabe que o povo está sempre disposto a fazer o mal. 23 Eles me disseram: “Faça para nós um deus que nos guie, porque não sabemos o que aconteceu com Moisés, o homem que nos tirou do Egito”. 24 Então eu disse: “Quem tiver ouro, tire-o e traga-o a mim”. Depois eu joguei o ouro no fogo e saiu este bezerro.
25 Moisés viu que o povo estava desenfreado e que os seus inimigos se riam deles, porque Aarão tinha deixado que eles fizessem o que queriam. 26 Então Moisés se colocou na entrada do acampamento e disse:
—Aqueles que estão do lado do SENHOR juntem-se a mim.
Todos os levitas se juntaram a ele. 27 E Moisés lhes disse:
—Assim diz o SENHOR, Deus de Israel: “Cada um de vocês pegue a sua espada, percorra todo o acampamento, de tenda em tenda, e mate o seu irmão, o seu amigo e o seu vizinho”.
28 Os levitas fizeram o que Moisés disse. Nesse dia morreram uns 3.000 homens. 29 Depois Moisés disse:
—Hoje vocês se consagraram ao SENHOR, sacrificando os seus filhos e irmãos. Por isso, o SENHOR abençoou vocês hoje.
30 Na manhã seguinte Moisés disse ao povo:
—Vocês cometeram um grande pecado. Mas vou subir para junto do SENHOR, talvez possa fazer uma oferta para que vocês sejam perdoados.
31 E Moisés subiu até ao SENHOR e disse:
—Por favor, Senhor, ouça-me. Este povo cometeu um grande pecado, eles fizeram um deus de ouro para adorá-lo. 32 Mas agora, peço que perdoe os seus pecados. Se o Senhor não os perdoar, apague também o meu nome do livro[b] que escreveu.
33 O SENHOR disse a Moisés:
—Só apago do meu livro aqueles que pecam contra mim. 34 Agora desça e guie o povo para onde eu disse a você. O meu anjo irá na sua frente para guiá-lo. No entanto, quando chegar o dia, castigarei os que pecaram contra mim.
35 E o SENHOR castigou o povo por adorar o bezerro que Aarão tinha feito.

32 Quando o povo viu que Moisés demorava a descer do monte, reuniu-se ao redor de Arão e disse: “Tome uma providência! Faça para nós deuses que nos guiem. Não sabemos o que aconteceu com esse Moisés, que nos trouxe da terra do Egito para cá”.
2 Arão respondeu: “Tirem as argolas de ouro das orelhas de suas mulheres e de seus filhos e filhas e tragam-nas para mim”.
3 Todos tiraram as argolas de ouro e as levaram a Arão. 4 Ele recebeu o ouro, derreteu-o e trabalhou nele, dando-lhe a forma de um bezerro. Quando o povo viu o bezerro, começou a exclamar: “Ó Israel, estes são os seus deuses que o tiraram da terra do Egito!”.
5 Percebendo o entusiasmo do povo, Arão construiu um altar diante do bezerro e anunciou: “Amanhã haverá uma festa para o Senhor!”.
6 Na manhã seguinte, o povo se levantou cedo para apresentar holocaustos e ofertas de paz. Depois, todos comeram e beberam e se entregaram à farra.
7 O Senhor disse a Moisés: “Rápido! Desça do monte! Seu povo, que você tirou da terra do Egito, se corrompeu. 8 Como se desviaram depressa do caminho que eu lhes havia ordenado! Derreteram ouro e fizeram um bezerro, curvaram-se diante dele e lhe ofereceram sacrifícios. Dizem: ‘Ó Israel, estes são os seus deuses que o tiraram da terra do Egito!’”.
9 Então o Senhor declarou: “Vi como este povo é teimoso e rebelde. 10 Agora fique de lado, e eu lançarei contra eles minha ira ardente e os destruirei. Depois, farei de você, Moisés, uma grande nação”.
11 Moisés, porém, tentou apaziguar o Senhor, seu Deus. “Ó Senhor!”, exclamou ele. “Por que estás tão irado com teu próprio povo, que tiraste do Egito com tão grande poder e mão forte? 12 Por que deixar os egípcios dizerem: ‘O Deus deles os resgatou com a má intenção de exterminá-los nos montes e apagá-los da face da terra’? Deixa de lado tua ira ardente! Arrepende-te quanto a esta calamidade terrível que ameaçaste enviar sobre teu povo! 13 Lembra-te dos teus servos Abraão, Isaque e Jacó.[a] Assumiste um compromisso com eles por meio de juramento, dizendo: ‘Tornarei seus descendentes tão numerosos quanto as estrelas do céu. Eu lhes darei toda esta terra que lhes prometi, e eles a possuirão para sempre’.”
14 Então o Senhor se arrependeu da calamidade terrível que havia ameaçado enviar sobre seu povo.
15 Em seguida, Moisés se virou e desceu o monte. Trazia nas mãos as duas tábuas da aliança,[b] que estavam escritas dos dois lados, frente e verso. 16 As tábuas eram obra de Deus; cada palavra tinha sido gravada pelo próprio Deus.
17 Quando Josué ouviu o alvoroço do povo que gritava lá embaixo, disse a Moisés: “Parece que há guerra no acampamento!”.
18 Moisés respondeu: “Não são gritos de vitória nem lamentos de derrota. Ouço barulho de festa”.
19 Quando se aproximaram do acampamento, Moisés viu o bezerro e as danças e ficou furioso. Jogou as tábuas de pedra no chão e as despedaçou ao pé do monte. 20 Tomou o bezerro que haviam feito e o queimou. Moeu-o até virar pó, jogou-o na água e obrigou os israelitas a bebê-la.
21 Por fim, dirigiu-se a Arão e perguntou: “O que este povo lhe fez para que você os levasse a cometer tamanho pecado?”.
22 “Não fique tão furioso comigo, meu senhor”, respondeu Arão. “Você sabe como este povo é mau. 23 Eles me disseram: ‘Faça para nós deuses que nos guiem. Não sabemos o que aconteceu com esse Moisés, que nos trouxe da terra do Egito para cá’. 24 Então eu lhes disse: ‘Quem tiver joias de ouro, tire-as’. Quando eles as trouxeram para mim, simplesmente as joguei no fogo e saiu este bezerro!”
25 Moisés viu que Arão havia permitido que o povo se descontrolasse completamente, dando motivo de zombaria a seus inimigos.[c] 26 Portanto, colocou-se à entrada do acampamento e gritou: “Todos que estiverem do lado do Senhor, venham até aqui e juntem-se a mim!”. E todos os levitas se reuniram ao redor dele.
27 Moisés lhes disse: “Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: ‘Cada um de vocês pegue sua espada e vão e voltem de uma extremidade à outra do acampamento. Matem todos, até mesmo seus irmãos, amigos e vizinhos’”. 28 Os levitas obedeceram à ordem de Moisés, e cerca de três mil pessoas morreram naquele dia.
29 Então Moisés disse aos levitas: “Hoje vocês se consagraram[d] para o serviço do Senhor, pois lhe obedeceram mesmo quando tiveram de matar seus próprios filhos e irmãos. Hoje vocês receberam dele uma bênção”.
Moisés intercede por Israel
30 No dia seguinte, Moisés disse ao povo: “Vocês cometeram um pecado terrível, mas eu subirei ao monte e me encontrarei com o Senhor outra vez. Talvez eu consiga fazer expiação por este pecado!”.
31 Moisés voltou ao Senhor e disse: “Que pecado terrível este povo cometeu! Fizeram para si deuses de ouro. 32 Agora, porém, eu te suplico que lhes perdoes o pecado; do contrário, apaga meu nome do registro que escreveste!”.
33 O Senhor, porém, respondeu a Moisés: “Apagarei o nome de todos que pecaram contra mim. 34 Agora vá e leve o povo ao lugar do qual eu lhe falei. Veja, meu anjo irá à sua frente. E, no dia do acerto de contas, certamente eu castigarei este povo pelo pecado que cometeram”.
35 Então o Senhor castigou severamente o povo, por causa do que fizeram com o bezerro que Arão lhes tinha construído.

9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
11 And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.
14 And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.
16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.
18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.
19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?
22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.
23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
25 And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)
26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.
28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
29 For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.
30 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the Lord; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.
31 And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
33 And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
34 Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.
35 And the Lord plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

32 Now when the people saw that Moses (B)delayed coming down from the mountain, the people (C)gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, (D)“Come, make us [a]gods that shall (E)go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who (F)brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”
2 And Aaron said to them, “Break off the (G)golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. 4 (H)And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf.
Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, that (I)brought you out of the land of Egypt!”
5 So when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a (J)proclamation and said, “Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord.” 6 Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people (K)sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

11 (T)Then Moses pleaded with [d]the Lord his God, and said: “Lord, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 (U)Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, ‘He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your fierce wrath, and (V)relent from this harm to Your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You (W)swore by Your own self, and said to them, (X)‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ” 14 So the Lord (Y)relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.
15 And (Z)Moses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of the Testimony were in his hand. The tablets were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other they were written. 16 Now the (AA)tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God engraved on the tablets.
17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.”
18 But he said:
“It is not the noise of the shout of victory,
Nor the noise of the cry of defeat,
But the sound of singing I hear.”
19 So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that (AB)he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. 20 (AC)Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it. 21 And Moses said to Aaron, (AD)“What did this people do to you that you have brought so great a sin upon them?”
22 So Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord become hot. (AE)You know the people, that they are set on evil. 23 For they said to me, ‘Make us gods that shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 24 And I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out.”
25 Now when Moses saw that the people were (AF)unrestrained (for Aaron (AG)had not restrained them, to their shame among their enemies), 26 then Moses stood in the entrance of the camp, and said, “Whoever is on the Lord’s side—come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him. 27 And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Let every man put his sword on his side, and go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and (AH)let every man kill his brother, every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’ ” 28 So the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And about three thousand men of the people fell that day. 29 (AI)Then Moses said, [e]“Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, that He may bestow on you a blessing this day, for every man has opposed his son and his brother.”
30 Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people, (AJ)“You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to the Lord; (AK)perhaps I can (AL)make atonement for your sin.” 31 Then Moses (AM)returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have (AN)made for themselves a god of gold! 32 Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, (AO)blot me (AP)out of Your book which You have written.”
33 And the Lord said to Moses, (AQ)“Whoever has sinned against Me, I will (AR)blot him out of My book. 34 Now therefore, go, lead the people to the place of which I have (AS)spoken to you. (AT)Behold, My Angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, (AU)in the day when I (AV)visit for punishment, I will visit punishment upon them for their sin.”
35 So the Lord plagued the people because of (AW)what they did with the calf which Aaron made.
