14 O SENHOR disse a Moisés:

2 —Diga aos israelitas que regressem para Pi-Hairote e que acampem junto ao mar Vermelho, entre Migdol e o mar, em frente de Baal-Zefom. 3 Assim o faraó irá pensar: “Os israelitas não sabem para onde ir, estão perdidos no deserto”. 4 Endurecerei o coração do faraó e ele irá perseguir vocês. E eu obterei uma grande vitória sobre o faraó e o seu exército, e serei glorificado. Todo o povo do Egito saberá que eu sou o SENHOR.

Então os israelitas fizeram o que Deus lhes disse.

O faraó persegue os israelitas

5 Quando o rei do Egito soube que o povo de Israel tinha escapado, ele e os seus ministros mudaram de ideia e disseram:

—Como pudemos deixar que o povo de Israel fosse embora e deixasse de ser nosso escravo?

6 Então o faraó mandou preparar o seu carro de guerra e saiu com o seu exército. 7 Levou com ele seiscentos dos seus melhores carros de guerra e também todos os outros carros de guerra. Havia um comandante[a] em cada carro. 8 O SENHOR endureceu o coração do faraó, rei do Egito, e fez com que ele perseguisse os israelitas, que tinham saído vitoriosamente.

9 Os egípcios perseguiram os israelitas com todos os seus cavalos e carros de guerra. Alcançaram o povo de Israel quando eles estavam acampados junto ao mar, perto de Pi-Hairote, diante de Baal-Zefom.

10 Quando os israelitas viram que o faraó se aproximava cada vez mais deles, ficaram com muito medo e começaram a gritar, pedindo ao SENHOR para ajudá-los. 11 E disseram a Moisés:

—Foi por não haver sepulcros no Egito que nos trouxe para morrer neste deserto? Por que você fez isto? Por que nos tirou do Egito? 12 Será que não dissemos para você no Egito: “Deixe-nos ser escravos dos egípcios”? É melhor sermos escravos no Egito do que morrer no deserto.

13 Moisés respondeu ao povo:

—Não tenham medo. Fiquem quietos e verão como o SENHOR os salvará hoje. Nunca mais voltarão a ver estes egípcios! 14 O SENHOR lutará por vocês; portanto, fiquem calados.

15 O SENHOR perguntou a Moisés:

—Por que me pede ajuda? Mande os israelitas seguir em frente. 16 E você, levante a sua vara e estenda a sua mão sobre o mar. Faça com que o mar se abra ao meio para os israelitas passarem sobre terra seca. 17 Eu endurecerei o coração dos egípcios para que eles os persigam. Então serei glorificado: o faraó, os seus carros de guerra e o seu exército serão destruídos. 18 Quando isso acontecer, todos os egípcios ficarão sabendo que eu sou o SENHOR.

19 O anjo de Deus e a coluna de nuvem, que iam adiante dos israelitas, se colocaram atrás deles. 20 Se colocaram entre os egípcios e os israelitas. A coluna de nuvem fez com que os egípcios ficassem às escuras e com que os israelitas tivessem luz. Durante toda a noite, os egípcios não conseguiram se aproximar dos israelitas.

21 Moisés estendeu a sua mão sobre o mar e o SENHOR fez com que viesse do leste um forte vento. O vento soprou toda a noite sobre as águas do mar e elas dividiram-se em duas, ficando terra seca entre elas. 22 E os israelitas atravessaram o mar caminhando em terra seca, com uma parede de água à direita, e outra à esquerda.

23 Os egípcios continuaram perseguindo aos israelitas. Todos os cavalos do faraó, os seus carros de guerra e os seus cavaleiros entraram no mar atrás deles. 24 Mas, de manhã cedo, o SENHOR olhou da coluna de nuvem e de fogo para o lado dos egípcios e fez com que eles ficassem cheios de terror. 25 O SENHOR também travou as rodas dos carros de guerra e era difícil conduzi-los. Então, os egípcios disseram:

—Vamos fugir dos israelitas! O SENHOR luta ao lado deles, contra nós.

26 E o SENHOR disse a Moisés:

—Estenda o seu braço sobre o mar para que as águas se fechem sobre os egípcios, os seus carros de guerra e a sua cavalaria.

27 Então, ao romper o dia, Moisés levantou a sua mão sobre o mar e as águas voltaram ao seu lugar. Os egípcios fugiam da água, mas o SENHOR os atirou para o meio do mar. 28 As águas do mar cobriram todos os carros de guerra e os cavalos do exército do faraó que tinham entrado no mar para perseguir os israelitas. Nenhum deles ficou vivo. 29 Mas os israelitas atravessaram o mar sobre terra seca, entre duas paredes de água, uma à direita e outra à esquerda.

30 Nesse dia o SENHOR salvou Israel do poder dos egípcios e os israelitas viram os egípcios mortos na praia. 31 Ao ver o grande poder do SENHOR contra os egípcios, o povo de Israel temeu o SENHOR e confiou nele e no seu servo Moisés.

Deus anuncia a ruína dos egípcios

14 Então, falou o Senhor a Moisés, dizendo: 2 Fala aos filhos de Israel que voltem e que acampem diante de Pi-Hairote, entre Migdol e o mar, diante de Baal-Zefom; em frente dele assentareis o campo junto ao mar. 3 Então, Faraó dirá dos filhos de Israel: Estão embaraçados na terra, o deserto os encerrou. 4 E eu endurecerei o coração de Faraó, para que os persiga, e serei glorificado em Faraó e em todo o seu exército; e saberão os egípcios que eu sou o Senhor. E eles fizeram assim. 5 Sendo, pois, anunciado ao rei do Egito que o povo fugia, mudou-se o coração de Faraó e dos seus servos contra o povo, e disseram: Por que fizemos isso, havendo deixado ir a Israel, para que nos não sirva? 6 E aprontou o seu carro e tomou consigo o seu povo; 7 e tomou seiscentos carros escolhidos, e todos os carros do Egito, e os capitães sobre eles todos. 8 Porque o Senhor endureceu o coração de Faraó, rei do Egito, para que perseguisse os filhos de Israel; porém os filhos de Israel saíram com alta mão. 9 E os egípcios perseguiram-nos, todos os cavalos e carros de Faraó, e os seus cavaleiros, e o seu exército e alcançaram-nos acampados junto ao mar, perto de Pi-Hairote, diante de Baal-Zefom.

10 E, chegando Faraó, os filhos de Israel levantaram seus olhos, e eis que os egípcios vinham atrás deles, e temeram muito; então, os filhos de Israel clamaram ao Senhor. 11 E disseram a Moisés: Não havia sepulcros no Egito, para nos tirares de lá, para que morramos neste deserto? Por que nos fizeste isto, que nos tens tirado do Egito? 12 Não é esta a palavra que te temos falado no Egito, dizendo: Deixa-nos, que sirvamos aos egípcios? Pois que melhor nos fora servir aos egípcios do que morrermos no deserto. 13 Moisés, porém, disse ao povo: Não temais; estai quietos e vede o livramento do Senhor, que hoje vos fará; porque aos egípcios, que hoje vistes, nunca mais vereis para sempre. 14 O Senhor pelejará por vós, e vos calareis.

A passagem pelo meio do mar

15 Então, disse o Senhor a Moisés: Por que clamas a mim? Dize aos filhos de Israel que marchem. 16 E tu, levanta a tua vara, e estende a tua mão sobre o mar, e fende-o, para que os filhos de Israel passem pelo meio do mar em seco. 17 E eis que endurecerei o coração dos egípcios para que entrem nele atrás deles; e eu serei glorificado em Faraó, e em todo o seu exército, e nos seus carros, e nos cavaleiros, 18 e os egípcios saberão que eu sou o Senhor, quando for glorificado em Faraó, e nos seus carros, e nos seus cavaleiros.

19 E o Anjo de Deus, que ia adiante do exército de Israel, se retirou e ia atrás deles; também a coluna de nuvem se retirou de diante deles e se pôs atrás deles. 20 E ia entre o campo dos egípcios e o campo de Israel; e a nuvem era escuridade para aqueles e para estes esclarecia a noite; de maneira que em toda a noite não chegou um ao outro.

21 Então, Moisés estendeu a sua mão sobre o mar, e o Senhor fez retirar o mar por um forte vento oriental toda aquela noite; e o mar tornou-se em seco, e as águas foram partidas. 22 E os filhos de Israel entraram pelo meio do mar em seco; e as águas lhes foram como muro à sua direita e à sua esquerda. 23 E os egípcios seguiram-nos, e entraram atrás deles todos os cavalos de Faraó, os seus carros e os seus cavaleiros, até ao meio do mar. 24 E aconteceu que, na vigília daquela manhã, o Senhor, na coluna de fogo e de nuvem, viu o campo dos egípcios; e alvoroçou o campo dos egípcios, 25 e tirou-lhes as rodas dos seus carros, e fê-los andar dificultosamente. Então, disseram os egípcios: Fujamos da face de Israel, porque o Senhor por eles peleja contra os egípcios.

26 E disse o Senhor a Moisés: Estende a tua mão sobre o mar, para que as águas tornem sobre os egípcios, sobre os seus carros e sobre os seus cavaleiros.

Os egípcios perecem no mar

27 Então, Moisés estendeu a sua mão sobre o mar, e o mar retomou a sua força ao amanhecer, e os egípcios fugiram ao seu encontro; e o Senhor derribou os egípcios no meio do mar, 28 porque as águas, tornando, cobriram os carros e os cavaleiros de todo o exército de Faraó, que os haviam seguido no mar; nem ainda um deles ficou. 29 Mas os filhos de Israel foram pelo meio do mar em seco: e as águas foram-lhes como muro à sua mão direita e à sua esquerda.

30 Assim, o Senhor salvou Israel naquele dia da mão dos egípcios; e Israel viu os egípcios mortos na praia do mar. 31 E viu Israel a grande mão que o Senhor mostrara aos egípcios; e temeu o povo ao Senhor e creu no Senhor e em Moisés, seu servo.

14 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea.

3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.

4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the Lord. And they did so.

5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?

6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him:

7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.

8 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand.

9 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon.

10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord.

11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?

12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.

13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

14 The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

15 And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:

16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

17 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:

20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the Lord looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,

25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the Lord fighteth for them against the Egyptians.

26 And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.

27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.

29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

30 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.

31 And Israel saw that great work which the Lord did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord, and his servant Moses.

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol(A) and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon.(B) 3 Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.’ 4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart,(C) and he will pursue them.(D) But I will gain glory(E) for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.”(F) So the Israelites did this.

5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled,(G) Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds(H) about them and said, “What have we done? We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services!” 6 So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him. 7 He took six hundred of the best chariots,(I) along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. 8 The Lord hardened the heart(J) of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly.(K) 9 The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses(L) and chariots, horsemen[a] and troops(M)—pursued the Israelites and overtook(N) them as they camped by the sea near Pi Hahiroth, opposite Baal Zephon.(O)

10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried(P) out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?(Q) What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”(R)

13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid.(S) Stand firm and you will see(T) the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see(U) again. 14 The Lord will fight(V) for you; you need only to be still.”(W)

15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me?(X) Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise your staff(Y) and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water(Z) so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. 17 I will harden the hearts(AA) of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them.(AB) And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord(AC) when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”

19 Then the angel of God,(AD) who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud(AE) also moved from in front and stood behind(AF) them, 20 coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness(AG) to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long.

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand(AH) over the sea,(AI) and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind(AJ) and turned it into dry land.(AK) The waters were divided,(AL) 22 and the Israelites went through the sea(AM) on dry ground,(AN) with a wall(AO) of water on their right and on their left.

23 The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen(AP) followed them into the sea. 24 During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud(AQ) at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion.(AR) 25 He jammed[b] the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting(AS) for them against Egypt.”(AT)

26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” 27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place.(AU) The Egyptians were fleeing toward[c] it, and the Lord swept them into the sea.(AV) 28 The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea.(AW) Not one of them survived.(AX)

29 But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground,(AY) with a wall(AZ) of water on their right and on their left. 30 That day the Lord saved(BA) Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. 31 And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand(BB) of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared(BC) the Lord and put their trust(BD) in him and in Moses his servant.
