A lei sobre os primogênitos

13 O SENHOR disse a Moisés:

2 —Todo primeiro filho das famílias israelitas me pertence e deve ser dedicado a mim. O mesmo acontece com todas as primeiras crias dos seus animais.

A festa dos Pães sem Fermento

3 E Moisés disse ao povo:

—Este é o dia em que o SENHOR, com grande poder, fez vocês saírem do Egito e os livrou da escravidão. Lembrem-se deste dia e não comam nada com fermento. 4 Hoje, no mês de abib, vocês estão saindo do Egito. 5 E o SENHOR levará vocês para a terra dos cananeus, dos heteus, dos amorreus, dos heveus e dos jebuseus. Essa é a terra que Deus prometeu dar aos seus antepassados, uma terra boa para semear e criar gado. Quando entrarem nessa terra, devem celebrar esta festa no primeiro mês de cada ano. 6 Durante sete dias comerão pão sem fermento e no sétimo dia farão uma festa dedicada ao SENHOR. 7 Durante esses sete dias comerão pão sem fermento. Não deverá haver nada fermentado entre vocês, nem nenhum fermento em todo o seu território. 8 Nesse dia cada um dirá ao seu filho: “Fazemos esta festa porque o SENHOR nos tirou do Egito”. 9 Essa festa será como sinal, como se vocês tivessem uma marca na mão ou na testa[a], será para vocês se lembrarem que devem falar da lei do SENHOR, pois o SENHOR tirou vocês do Egito com grande poder. 10 Portanto, celebrem essa festa todos os anos e na mesma data.

11 —O SENHOR vai fazer com que vocês entrem na terra dos cananeus, conforme ele prometeu a vocês e aos seus antepassados. 12 Quando isso acontecer, dediquem-lhe todo o primeiro filho que nascer e também todos os primeiros machos que nascerem dos seus animais, porque os primeiros filhos pertencem ao SENHOR. 13 Cada jumento recém-nascido poderá ser resgatado se, em troca, for sacrificado um cordeiro ou cabrito. Mas se não for resgatado, terão que partir o pescoço dele. Entre os seres humanos, o primeiro filho será sempre resgatado.

14 —No futuro, quando o seu filho perguntar: “Que significa isto?”, você responderá: “Pelo seu grande poder, o SENHOR nos tirou do Egito e nos libertou da escravidão. 15 Quando o faraó foi teimoso e não quis nos libertar, o SENHOR matou todos os primeiros filhos do Egito, tanto os primeiros filhos das pessoas como os dos animais. Essa é a razão pela qual resgatamos os nossos filhos e sacrificamos ao SENHOR as primeiras crias dos nossos animais”. 16 Como um sinal na mão ou na testa, esta cerimônia fará vocês recordarem que o SENHOR nos tirou do Egito com grande poder.

A viagem para fora do Egito

17 Quando o faraó deixou sair os israelitas, Deus não os levou pelo caminho que atravessa a terra dos filisteus, embora esse fosse o caminho mais curto, porque pensou: “Se eles forem por ali, vai haver guerra e isso poderá fazê-los mudar de ideia e querer voltar para o Egito”. 18 Então Deus fez o povo dar a volta pelo deserto, na direção do mar Vermelho. Os israelitas saíram do Egito em grupos, como um exército. 19 Moisés levou com ele os ossos de José, porque José tinha feito prometer aos israelitas que assim fizessem. José disse: “Certamente, Deus virá para ajudar vocês. Quando isso acontecer, levem os meus ossos daqui”.

20 Partiram de Sucote e acamparam em Etam, onde começa o deserto. 21 Durante o dia, o SENHOR ia na frente deles na forma de uma coluna de nuvem, para lhes mostrar o caminho. Durante a noite, o SENHOR ia como uma coluna de fogo, para iluminar o caminho deles. Assim podiam caminhar de dia e de noite. 22 A coluna de nuvem nunca se afastava de diante do povo durante o dia, nem a coluna de fogo durante a noite.

A Consagração dos Primogênitos

13 E disse o Senhor a Moisés: 2 “Consagre a mim todos os primogênitos. O primeiro filho israelita me pertence, não somente entre os homens, mas também entre os animais”.

3 Então disse Moisés ao povo: “Comemorem esse dia em que vocês saíram do Egito, da terra da escravidão, porque o Senhor os tirou dali com mão poderosa. Não comam nada fermentado. 4 Neste dia do mês de abibe[a] vocês estão saindo. 5 Quando o Senhor os fizer entrar na terra dos cananeus, dos hititas, dos amorreus, dos heveus e dos jebuseus — terra que ele jurou aos seus antepassados que daria a vocês, terra onde manam leite e mel — vocês deverão celebrar esta cerimônia neste mesmo mês. 6 Durante sete dias comam pão sem fermento e, no sétimo dia, façam uma festa dedicada ao Senhor. 7 Comam pão sem fermento durante os sete dias; não haja nada fermentado entre vocês, nem fermento algum dentro do seu território.

8 “Nesse dia cada um dirá a seu filho: Assim faço pelo que o Senhor fez por mim quando saí do Egito. 9 Isto lhe será como sinal em sua mão e memorial em sua testa, para que a lei do Senhor esteja em seus lábios, porque o Senhor o tirou do Egito com mão poderosa. 10 Cumpra esta determinação na época certa, de ano em ano.

11 “Depois que o Senhor os fizer entrar na terra dos cananeus e entregá-la a vocês, como jurou a vocês e aos seus antepassados, 12 separem para o Senhor o primeiro nascido de todo ventre. Todos os primeiros machos dos seus rebanhos pertencem ao Senhor. 13 Resgatem com um cordeiro toda primeira cria dos jumentos, mas se não quiserem resgatá-la, quebrem-lhe o pescoço. Resgatem também todo primogênito entre os seus filhos.

14 “No futuro, quando os seus filhos lhes perguntarem: ‘Que significa isto?’, digam-lhes: Com mão poderosa o Senhor nos tirou do Egito, da terra da escravidão. 15 Quando o faraó resistiu e recusou deixar-nos sair, o Senhor matou todos os primogênitos do Egito, tanto os de homens como os de animais. Por isso sacrificamos ao Senhor os primeiros machos de todo ventre e resgatamos os nossos primogênitos.

16 “Isto será como sinal em sua mão e símbolo em sua testa de que o Senhor nos tirou do Egito com mão poderosa”.

A Partida dos Israelitas

17 Quando o faraó deixou sair o povo, Deus não o guiou pela rota da terra dos filisteus, embora este fosse o caminho mais curto, pois disse: “Se eles se defrontarem com a guerra, talvez se arrependam e voltem para o Egito”. 18 Assim, Deus fez o povo dar a volta pelo deserto, seguindo o caminho que leva ao mar Vermelho. Os israelitas saíram do Egito preparados para lutar.

19 Moisés levou os ossos de José, porque José havia feito os filhos de Israel prestarem um juramento, quando disse: “Deus certamente virá em auxílio de vocês; levem então os meus ossos daqui”.

20 Os israelitas partiram de Sucote e acamparam em Etã, junto ao deserto. 21 Durante o dia o Senhor ia adiante deles, numa coluna de nuvem, para guiá-los no caminho, e de noite, numa coluna de fogo, para iluminá-los, e assim podiam caminhar de dia e de noite. 22 A coluna de nuvem não se afastava do povo de dia, nem a coluna de fogo, de noite.

Sanctifying the Firstborn

13 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “(A)Sanctify to Me every firstborn, the first [a]offspring of every womb among the sons of Israel, both of man and beast; it belongs to Me.”

The Feast of Unleavened Bread

3 And Moses said to the people, “(B)Remember this day in which you went out from Egypt, from the house of [b]slavery; for (C)by a strong hand Yahweh brought you out from this place. (D)And nothing leavened shall be eaten. 4 This day, in the (E)month of Abib, you are going out. 5 And it shall be when Yahweh (F)brings you to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which (G)He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, (H)that you shall [c]do this service in this month. 6 For (I)seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to Yahweh. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and (J)nothing leavened shall be seen [d]among you, nor shall any leaven be seen [e]among you in all your borders. 8 (K)And you shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‘It is because of what Yahweh did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 And (L)it will be as a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of Yahweh may be in your mouth; for with (M)a strong hand Yahweh brought you out of Egypt. 10 Therefore, you shall (N)keep this statute at its appointed time from [f]year to year.

11 “And it will be when (O)Yahweh brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as (P)He swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 (Q)and you shall [g]devote to Yahweh the first [h]offspring of every womb and [i]the first offspring of every beast that you own; the males belong to Yahweh. 13 But (R)every first [j]offspring of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and (S)every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 (T)And it will be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ then you shall say to him, ‘(U)With a strong hand Yahweh brought us out of Egypt, from the house of [k]slavery. 15 And it happened, when Pharaoh hardened his heart with stiffness about letting us go, that (V)Yahweh killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore, I sacrifice to Yahweh the males, the first [l]offspring of every womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 So (W)it will be as a sign on your hand and as [m]phylacteries between your eyes, for with a strong hand Yahweh brought us out of Egypt.”

Pillars of Cloud and Fire

17 Now it happened that when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not guide them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, “(X)Lest the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 Hence God turned the people to the way of the wilderness to the [n]Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up (Y)in battle array from the land of Egypt. 19 And Moses took (Z)the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, “God will surely [o]take care of you, and you shall bring up my bones from here with you.” 20 Then they set out from (AA)Succoth and camped in Etham on the edge of the wilderness. 21 (AB)And Yahweh was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to guide them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might go by day and by night. 22 [p]He (AC)did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Consecration of the Firstborn

13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Consecrate to me every firstborn male.(A) The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.”

3 Then Moses said to the people, “Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt,(B) out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand.(C) Eat nothing containing yeast.(D) 4 Today, in the month of Aviv,(E) you are leaving. 5 When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites,(F) Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites(G)—the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey(H)—you are to observe this ceremony(I) in this month: 6 For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival(J) to the Lord. 7 Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. 8 On that day tell your son,(K) ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand(L) and a reminder on your forehead(M) that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.(N) 10 You must keep this ordinance(O) at the appointed time(P) year after year.

11 “After the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites(Q) and gives it to you, as he promised on oath(R) to you and your ancestors,(S) 12 you are to give over to the Lord the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord.(T) 13 Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey,(U) but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.(V) Redeem(W) every firstborn among your sons.(X)

14 “In days to come, when your son(Y) asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.(Z) 15 When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.’(AA) 16 And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead(AB) that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.”

Crossing the Sea

17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”(AC) 18 So God led(AD) the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea.[a] The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.(AE)

19 Moses took the bones of Joseph(AF) with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”[b](AG)

20 After leaving Sukkoth(AH) they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.(AI) 21 By day the Lord went ahead(AJ) of them in a pillar of cloud(AK) to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left(AL) its place in front of the people.
