Dios vuelve a escribir su ley
34 Dios le dijo a Moisés:
«Tráeme dos tablas de piedra, como las que te di antes. En ellas escribiré las mismas leyes que estaban en las que rompiste. 2 Prepárate para subir mañana temprano a la montaña del Sinaí. Quiero verte en la parte más alta. 3 Nadie debe acompañarte; no quiero ver gente, ni ovejas ni vacas por allí».
4 Moisés hizo dos tablas de piedra iguales a las primeras, y al día siguiente muy temprano subió a la montaña. 5 Dios bajó en una nube, y allí se reunió con Moisés y le dio a conocer su propio nombre. 6 Mientras pasaba delante de Moisés, Dios dijo en voz alta:
«¡Soy el Dios de Israel! ¡Yo soy es el nombre con que me di a conocer! Soy un Dios tierno y bondadoso. No me enojo fácilmente, y mi amor por mi pueblo es muy grande. 7 Mi amor es siempre el mismo, y siempre estoy dispuesto a perdonar a quienes hacen lo malo. Pero también sé castigar al culpable, y a sus hijos, nietos, bisnietos y tataranietos».
8 Enseguida Moisés se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, y adoró a Dios 9 diciendo: «¡Dios mío! ¡Dios mío! Si de veras me amas, acompáñanos. Es verdad que somos muy tercos, pero perdona nuestros pecados y acéptanos como tu pueblo».
Dios hace un pacto
10 Dios le dijo a Moisés:
«Pon atención, porque voy a hacer un pacto con todo tu pueblo. Voy a hacer grandes milagros, como nunca antes se han visto en ningún país del mundo. Todos los países donde ustedes vivan verán lo que yo, el Dios de Israel, puedo hacer.
11 »Si ustedes obedecen todo lo que hoy les he ordenado, yo expulsaré a todos los pueblos que no me obedecen, y su territorio se lo daré a ustedes.
12 »Ustedes van a entrar al territorio que les prometí. No deben hacer ningún pacto con los que allí viven, para que no imiten su mala conducta. 13 Al contrario, deberán destruir completamente sus altares y sus ídolos.
14 »No adoren a ningún otro dios, porque soy un Dios muy celoso.
15 »No hagan ningún trato con la gente de ese territorio, porque ellos los invitarán a participar de sus cultos, y ustedes terminarán adorando a sus dioses falsos. 16 Tal vez les parezca bien que sus hijos se casen con las hijas de esa gente, pero cuando ellas pequen al adorar a sus dioses falsos, harán que sus hijos también pequen.
17 »No hagan ningún ídolo de metal fundido para adorarlo.
Las fiestas de cada año
18 »Celebren la fiesta de los panes sin levadura. Coman pan sin levadura durante siete días, siguiendo todas las instrucciones que les he dado. Deben hacer la fiesta en el mes de Abib,[a] porque en ese mes salieron de Egipto.
19 »El primer hijo de cada uno de ustedes será para mí, lo mismo que todos los primeros machos de sus vacas y ovejas. 20 Por el primer macho de una burra podrán darme un cordero o un cabrito. Pero si no me lo dan, entonces le romperán el cuello al burrito. De igual manera, a cambio del primer hijo de ustedes podrán darme una ofrenda. Nadie podrá venir a adorarme si no trae algo.
21 »Ustedes podrán trabajar los primeros seis días de la semana, pero el séptimo día deberán descansar, aun en la época de la siembra o de la cosecha.
22 »También deberán celebrar la fiesta de la cosecha en la primavera, y la fiesta de las enramadas en el otoño.
23 »Todos los varones israelitas mayores de edad deberán venir a adorarme tres veces al año. Yo soy el Dios de Israel. 24 Yo expulsaré a las demás naciones, para que ustedes tengan más territorio. Así nadie podrá adueñarse de su territorio cuando vengan a adorarme.
25 »Cuando me presenten el sacrificio de algún animal, no me ofrezcan al mismo tiempo la sangre del animal y pan con levadura. Tampoco guarden para el día siguiente lo que sobre del animal sacrificado en la fiesta de la Pascua.
26 »Deben traer a mi templo lo mejor de los primeros frutos que produzcan sus campos.
»Nunca cocinen cabritos en la leche de su madre».
27 Como todas esas leyes eran parte del pacto que Dios estaba haciendo con los israelitas, Dios le ordenó a Moisés que las escribiera. 28 Y Moisés se quedó con Dios en la montaña cuarenta días y cuarenta noches. Allí se escribieron en tablas de piedra los diez mandamientos de este pacto. En todo ese tiempo, Moisés no comió ni bebió nada.
Moisés baja del Sinaí
29 Cuando Moisés bajó de la montaña del Sinaí, traía consigo las dos tablas con la ley escrita en ellas. Su cara brillaba, pues había estado hablando con Dios, pero Moisés no se había dado cuenta. 30 Cuando Aarón y todos los israelitas vieron cómo brillaba la cara de Moisés, sintieron miedo y no se acercaron a él. 31 Pero Moisés los llamó para hablar con ellos. Primero fueron Aarón y todos los jefes israelitas, 32 y luego se acercó todo el pueblo. Entonces Moisés les dio todos los mandamientos que Dios le había dado en la montaña del Sinaí.
33 Cuando Moisés terminó de hablar con el pueblo, se tapó la cara con un velo. 34-35 Ese velo Moisés se lo dejaba puesto hasta que llegaba el momento de entrar al santuario para hablar con Dios. Cuando entraba al santuario, se lo quitaba, y al salir le comunicaba al pueblo todo lo que Dios le había ordenado. Pero como el pueblo veía que la cara de Moisés seguía brillando, él se veía obligado a ponerse de nuevo el velo.

Moses Gets New Stone Tablets
34 The Lord said to Moses, “·Cut [Hew out; Chisel] two more stone tablets like the ·first two [former], and I will write the same words on them that were on the ·first two [former] stones which you broke [32:15–16]. 2 Be ready tomorrow morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai. Stand before me there on the top of the mountain. 3 No one may come with you or even be seen any place on the mountain. Not even the flocks or herds may ·eat grass [graze] near that mountain.”
4 So Moses ·cut [hewed out] two stone tablets like the ·first ones [former]. Then early the next morning he went up Mount Sinai, just as the Lord had commanded him, carrying the two stone tablets with him. 5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with Moses, and the Lord called out his name: the Lord [L Yahweh; 3:14].
6 The Lord passed in front of Moses and said, “I am the Lord. The Lord is a God who shows ·mercy [compassion], who is ·kind [gracious], ·who doesn’t become angry quickly [patient], who has great ·love [loyalty] and faithfulness 7 and ·is kind [L guards/preserves loyalty] to thousands of people. The Lord forgives people for ·evil [iniquity], for ·sin [transgression], and for ·turning against him [sin], but he does not ·forget to punish guilty people [L clear]. He will punish not only the guilty people, but also their children, their grandchildren, ·their great-grandchildren, and their great-great-grandchildren [L to the third and fourth generations; Num. 14:18; Neh. 9:17; Ps. 86:15; 103:8; 145:8; Nah. 1:3].”
8 Then Moses quickly bowed to the ground and worshiped. 9 He said, “Lord, if ·you are pleased with me [L I have found favor in your eyes], please, [L Lord] go with us. I know that these are ·stubborn [L stiff-necked] people, but forgive our ·evil [iniquity] and our sin. Take us as your ·own people [L inheritance; possession].”
10 Then he said, “I am making this ·agreement [covenant; treaty] with you. I will do ·miracles [wonders] in front of all your people—things that have never before been done for any other nation on earth—and the people with you will see my work. I, the Lord, will do ·wonderful [awesome] things for you. 11 ·Obey [Observe] the things I command you today, and I will ·force [drive] out the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites ahead of you. 12 ·Be careful [Watch/Guard yourself] that you don’t ·make an agreement [L cut a covenant/treaty] with the people who live in the land where you are going, because ·it will bring you trouble [L they will be a snare/trap in your midst]. 13 ·Destroy [Tear down] their altars, break their stone pillars, and cut down their Asherah ·idols [poles; C objects sacred to the Canaanite goddess of fertility]. 14 Don’t worship any other god, because I, the Lord, ·the Jealous One [L whose name is Jealous], am a jealous God [20:5].
15 “Be careful that you don’t ·make an agreement [L cut a covenant] with the people who live in that land. When they ·worship [L whore after and sacrifice to] their gods, they will invite you to join them. Then you will eat their sacrifices. 16 If you ·choose [take] some of their daughters as wives for your sons and those daughters ·worship [L whore after other] gods, they will lead your sons to ·do the same thing [L whore after their gods].
17 “Do not make gods of ·melted [cast] metal [20:4–6].
18 “Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread [12:17–20]. For seven days you must eat ·bread made without yeast [unleavened bread] as I commanded you. Do this ·during the month I have chosen, [L at the appointed time in] the month of Abib [13:4], because in ·that month [L the month of Abib] you came out of Egypt.
19 “·The firstborn of every mother [L Everything that first opens the womb] belongs to me, including every firstborn male animal that is born in your flocks and herds. 20 You may ·buy back [redeem; ransom] a donkey ·by paying for it with [L with] a lamb, but if you don’t want to ·buy back a donkey [L redeem; ransom], you must break its neck. You must ·buy back [redeem; ransom] all your firstborn sons [13:11–13].
“No one is to come before me ·without a gift [L empty-handed].
21 “You must work for six days, but on the seventh day you must rest—even during the ·planting [plowing] season and the harvest season [20:8–11].
22 “Celebrate the Feast of Weeks when you gather the first grain of the wheat harvest [23:16]. And celebrate the Feast of ·Shelters [L Ingathering] ·in the fall [L at the turn of the year; 23:17].
23 “Three times each year all your males must ·come [L appear] before the Lord God, the God of Israel. 24 I will ·force out [dispossess] nations ahead of you and ·expand [enlarge] the borders of your land. You will go before the Lord your God three times each year, and at that time no one will ·try to take [L covet] your land from you.
25 “Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me with ·anything containing yeast [leaven], and do not leave any of the sacrifice of the Feast of Passover until the next morning [12:10].
26 “Bring the ·best first crops [firstfruits; 23:19] that you harvest from your ground to the ·Tent [L house] of the Lord your God.
“You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk [23:19].”
27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down these words, because with these words I have ·made an agreement [L cut a covenant] with you and Israel.”
28 Moses stayed there with the Lord forty days and forty nights, and during that time he did not eat food or drink water. And Moses wrote the words of the ·Agreement [Covenant; Treaty]—the Ten ·Commandments [L Words]—on the stone tablets.
The Face of Moses Shines
29 Then Moses came down from Mount Sinai, carrying the two stone tablets of the ·Agreement [Covenant; Testimony; Treaty] in his hands. But he did not know that his face was shining because he had talked with the Lord [C reflecting God’s holiness and glory and demonstrating Moses’ authority]. 30 When Aaron and all the ·people [L sons; children] of Israel saw that Moses’ face was shining, they were afraid to go near him. 31 But Moses called to them, so Aaron and all the ·leaders of the people [L men of the community/congregation/assembly] returned to Moses, and he talked with them. 32 After that, all the ·people [L sons; children] of Israel came near him, and he gave them all the commands that the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.
33 When Moses finished speaking to the people, he put a ·covering [veil] over his face. 34 Anytime Moses went before the Lord to speak with him, Moses took off the ·covering [veil] until he came out. Then Moses would come out and tell the Israelites what the Lord had commanded. 35 They would see that Moses’ face was shining. So he would ·cover [veil] his face again until the next time he went in to speak with the Lord [2 Cor. 3:12–18].

The New Stone Tablets
34 The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones,(A) and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets,(B) which you broke.(C) 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai.(D) Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain;(E) not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.”
4 So Moses chiseled(F) out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.(G) 5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(H) and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord.(I) 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate(J) and gracious God, slow to anger,(K) abounding in love(L) and faithfulness,(M) 7 maintaining love to thousands,(N) and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.(O) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished;(P) he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”(Q)
8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. 9 “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor(R) in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us.(S) Although this is a stiff-necked(T) people, forgive our wickedness and our sin,(U) and take us as your inheritance.”(V)
10 Then the Lord said: “I am making a covenant(W) with you. Before all your people I will do wonders(X) never before done in any nation in all the world.(Y) The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you. 11 Obey what I command(Z) you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.(AA) 12 Be careful not to make a treaty(AB) with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare(AC) among you. 13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.[a](AD) 14 Do not worship any other god,(AE) for the Lord, whose name(AF) is Jealous, is a jealous God.(AG)
15 “Be careful not to make a treaty(AH) with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute(AI) themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices.(AJ) 16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives(AK) for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods,(AL) they will lead your sons to do the same.
17 “Do not make any idols.(AM)
18 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(AN) For seven days eat bread made without yeast,(AO) as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv,(AP) for in that month you came out of Egypt.
19 “The first offspring(AQ) of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.(AR) Redeem all your firstborn sons.(AS)
“No one is to appear before me empty-handed.(AT)
21 “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest;(AU) even during the plowing season and harvest(AV) you must rest.
22 “Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits(AW) of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering(AX) at the turn of the year.[b] 23 Three times(AY) a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord, the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations(AZ) before you and enlarge your territory,(BA) and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the Lord your God.
25 “Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast,(BB) and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Festival remain until morning.(BC)
26 “Bring the best of the firstfruits(BD) of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.
“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”(BE)
27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write(BF) down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant(BG) with you and with Israel.” 28 Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights(BH) without eating bread or drinking water.(BI) And he wrote on the tablets(BJ) the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.(BK)
The Radiant Face of Moses
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai(BL) with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands,(BM) he was not aware that his face was radiant(BN) because he had spoken with the Lord. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community(BO) came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands(BP) the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.
33 When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil(BQ) over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant.(BR) Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord.
