34 Y el Señor dijo a Moisés: Lábrate dos tablas de piedra como las anteriores(A), y yo escribiré sobre las tablas las palabras que estaban en las primeras tablas que tú quebraste(B). 2 Prepárate, pues, para la mañana[a], y sube temprano al monte Sinaí(C), y allí preséntate a mí en la cumbre del monte. 3 Y que no suba nadie contigo, ni se vea a nadie en todo el monte; ni siquiera ovejas ni bueyes pasten delante de ese monte(D). 4 Moisés, pues, labró dos tablas de piedra como las anteriores(E), se levantó muy de mañana y subió al monte Sinaí, como el Señor le había mandado, llevando en su mano las dos tablas de piedra. 5 Y el Señor descendió en la nube y estuvo allí con él, mientras este invocaba el nombre del Señor(F). 6 Entonces pasó el Señor por delante de él y proclamó: El Señor, el Señor, Dios compasivo y clemente, lento para la ira y abundante en misericordia y fidelidad[b](G); 7 el que guarda misericordia a millares, el que perdona la iniquidad, la transgresión y el pecado, y que no tendrá por inocente al culpable(H); el que castiga la iniquidad de los padres sobre los hijos y sobre los hijos de los hijos hasta la tercera y cuarta generación(I). 8 Y Moisés se apresuró a inclinarse[c] a tierra y adoró(J), 9 y dijo: Si ahora, Señor, he hallado gracia ante tus ojos(K), vaya ahora el Señor en medio de nosotros, aunque el pueblo sea de dura cerviz(L); y perdona nuestra iniquidad y nuestro pecado(M), y tómanos por posesión[d] tuya(N).

Advertencia contra la idolatría

10 Y Dios contestó: He aquí, voy a hacer un pacto(O). Delante de todo tu pueblo haré maravillas que no se han hecho[e] en toda la tierra(P) ni en ninguna de las naciones; y todo el pueblo en medio del cual habitas[f] verá la obra del Señor, porque es cosa temible la que haré por medio de ti. 11 Observa lo que te mando hoy: he aquí, yo echo de delante de ti al amorreo, al cananeo, al hitita, al ferezeo, al heveo y al jebuseo(Q). 12 Cuídate de no hacer pacto con los habitantes de la tierra adonde vas, no sea que esto se convierta en tropezadero[g] en medio de ti(R); 13 sino que derribaréis sus altares y quebraréis sus pilares sagrados y cortaréis sus Aseras[h](S) 14 (pues no adorarás a ningún otro dios, ya que el Señor, cuyo nombre es Celoso, es Dios celoso(T)) 15 no sea que hagas pacto con los habitantes de aquella[i] tierra, y cuando se prostituyan con sus dioses y les[j] ofrezcan sacrificios(U), alguien te invite y comas de su sacrificio(V); 16 y tomes de sus hijas para tus hijos, y ellas[k] se prostituyan con sus dioses, y hagan que también tus hijos se prostituyan con los dioses de ellas(W). 17 No te harás dioses de fundición(X).

18 (Y)Guardarás la fiesta de los panes sin levadura. Según te he mandado, por siete días comerás panes sin levadura(Z) en el tiempo señalado en el mes de Abib(AA), porque en el mes de Abib saliste de Egipto(AB). 19 Todo primer nacido[l] de matriz me pertenece, y de todo ganado tuyo, el primer nacido[m] de vaca y de oveja, que sea macho(AC). 20 Redimirás con una oveja el primer nacido[n] de asno; y si no lo redimes, quebrarás su cerviz. Redimirás a todo primogénito de tus hijos(AD); y nadie se presentará[o] ante mí con las manos vacías(AE).

21 Seis días trabajarás, mas en el séptimo día descansarás(AF); aun en el tiempo de arar y de segar, descansarás. 22 También celebrarás la fiesta de las semanas, es decir, los primeros frutos de la siega del trigo, y la fiesta de la cosecha al final del año(AG). 23 Tres veces al año se presentarán todos tus varones delante de Dios[p], el Señor, Dios de Israel(AH). 24 Porque yo expulsaré[q] a las naciones de tu presencia y ensancharé tus fronteras(AI), y nadie codiciará tu tierra cuando subas tres veces al año a presentarte delante del Señor tu Dios.

25 No ofrecerás[r] la sangre de mi sacrificio con pan leudado, ni se dejará nada del sacrificio de la fiesta de la Pascua hasta la mañana(AJ). 26 Traerás a la casa del Señor tu Dios las primicias de los primeros frutos de tu tierra. No cocerás el cabrito en la leche de su madre(AK).

27 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: Escríbete estas palabras(AL); porque conforme a estas palabras he hecho un pacto(AM) contigo y con Israel. 28 Y Moisés estuvo allí con el Señor cuarenta días y cuarenta noches(AN); no comió pan ni bebió agua. Y escribió en las tablas(AO) las palabras del pacto, los diez mandamientos[s](AP).

La faz de Moisés resplandece

29 Y aconteció que cuando Moisés descendía del monte Sinaí con las dos tablas del testimonio en su mano, al descender del monte(AQ), Moisés no sabía que la piel de su rostro resplandecía(AR) por haber hablado con Dios[t]. 30 Y al ver Aarón y todos los hijos de Israel a Moisés, he aquí, la piel de su rostro resplandecía(AS); y tuvieron temor de acercarse a él. 31 Entonces Moisés los llamó, y Aarón y todos los jefes de la congregación volvieron a él; y Moisés les habló. 32 Y después se acercaron todos los hijos de Israel, y él les mandó que hicieran todo lo que el Señor había hablado con él en el monte Sinaí. 33 Cuando Moisés acabó de hablar con ellos, puso un velo sobre su rostro(AT). 34 Pero siempre que Moisés entraba a la presencia del Señor para hablar con Él, se quitaba el velo hasta que salía(AU); y siempre que salía y decía[u] a los hijos de Israel lo que se le había mandado, 35 los hijos de Israel veían que la piel del rostro de Moisés resplandecía. Y Moisés volvía a ponerse el velo sobre su rostro(AV) hasta que entraba a hablar con Dios[v].

Las nuevas tablas de la ley(A)

34 El Señor le dijo a Moisés:

—Corta tú mismo dos tablas de piedra iguales a las primeras, para que yo escriba en ellas las mismas palabras que estaban escritas en las primeras tablas, las que hiciste pedazos. 2 Prepárate también para subir al monte Sinaí mañana por la mañana, y preséntate ante mí en la parte más alta del monte. 3 Nadie debe subir contigo, ni se debe ver a nadie por todo el monte; tampoco debe haber ovejas o vacas pastando frente al monte.

4 Moisés cortó dos tablas de piedra iguales a las primeras. Al día siguiente, muy temprano, tomó las dos tablas de piedra y subió al monte Sinaí, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado. 5 Entonces el Señor bajó en una nube y estuvo allí con Moisés, y pronunció su propio nombre. 6 Pasó delante de Moisés, diciendo en voz alta:

—¡El Señor! ¡El Señor! ¡Dios tierno y compasivo, paciente y grande en amor y verdad! 7 Por mil generaciones se mantiene fiel en su amor y perdona la maldad, la rebeldía y el pecado; pero no deja sin castigo al culpable, sino que castiga la maldad de los padres en los hijos y en los nietos, en los bisnietos y en los tataranietos.

8 Rápidamente Moisés se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, y adoró al Señor 9 diciendo:

—¡Señor! ¡Señor! Si en verdad me he ganado tu favor, acompáñanos. Esta gente es realmente muy terca, pero perdónanos nuestros pecados y maldad, y acéptanos como tu pueblo.

La alianza renovada(B)

10 El Señor dijo:

«Pongan atención: yo hago ahora una alianza ante todo tu pueblo. Voy a hacer cosas maravillosas que no han sido hechas en ninguna otra nación de la tierra, y toda la gente entre la que ustedes se encuentran verá lo que el Señor puede hacer, pues será maravilloso lo que yo haré con ustedes.

11 »Cumplan lo que les he ordenado hoy, y yo arrojaré de la presencia de ustedes a los amorreos, cananeos, hititas, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos.

12 »No hagan ningún pacto con los que viven en el país al que van a entrar, para que no los hagan caer en sus redes. 13 Al contrario, derriben sus altares y destrocen por completo sus piedras y troncos sagrados.

14 »No adoren a ningún otro dios, porque el Señor es celoso. Su nombre es Dios celoso.

15 »No hagan ningún pacto con los que viven en esa tierra, no sea que cuando ellos se rebajen a adorar a sus dioses y les presenten ofrendas, los inviten a ustedes y ustedes coman también de esas ofrendas, 16 o casen ellos a sus hijas con los hijos de ustedes, y cuando ellas cometan inmoralidades al adorar a sus dioses, hagan que los hijos de ustedes también se rebajen a adorarlos.

17 »Jamás se hagan ustedes ídolos de metal fundido.

Fiestas anuales(C)

18 »Celebren la fiesta del pan sin levadura y, de acuerdo con lo que les he ordenado, coman pan sin levadura durante siete días. La fecha señalada es el mes de Abib, porque en ese mes salieron de Egipto.

19 »Todo primer hijo que ustedes tengan, será para mí, lo mismo que toda primera cría de sus vacas, ovejas y cabras, si la cría es un macho. 20 En el caso de la primera cría de una asna, deben dar un cordero o un cabrito en lugar del asno; pero si no lo dan, le romperán el cuello al asno. También deben dar una ofrenda en lugar de cada hijo mayor. Y nadie ha de venir a verme si no trae algo.

21 »Trabajen durante seis días, pero el día séptimo deben descansar, aun en tiempo de siembra o de cosecha.

22 »Celebren la fiesta de las Semanas, la de los primeros frutos de la cosecha de trigo, y la de la cosecha de fin del año.

23 »Todos los hombres se presentarán tres veces al año ante el Señor, el Dios de Israel. 24 Yo voy a arrojar de la presencia de ustedes a las demás naciones, y extenderé el territorio de ustedes. Así nadie tratará de adueñarse de su tierra mientras ustedes van a presentarse ante el Señor su Dios tres veces al año.

25 »En los sacrificios de animales, no ofrezcan juntos la sangre y el pan con levadura, ni guarden para el día siguiente lo que sobre del animal sacrificado en la Pascua.

26 »Deben llevar los mejores primeros frutos de su tierra al templo del Señor su Dios.

»No cocinen cabritos en la leche de su madre.»

Moisés escribe la ley

27 El Señor le dijo a Moisés: «Escribe estas palabras, porque ellas son la base de la alianza que yo hago contigo y con los israelitas.»

28 Moisés se quedó allí con el Señor cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, sin comer ni beber. Allí escribió sobre las tablas las palabras de la alianza, es decir, los diez mandamientos. 29 Después bajó Moisés del monte Sinaí llevando las dos tablas de la ley; pero al bajar del monte no se dio cuenta de que su cara resplandecía por haber hablado con el Señor. 30 Cuando Aarón y todos los israelitas vieron que la cara de Moisés resplandecía, sintieron miedo y no se acercaron a él. 31 Pero Moisés los llamó, y cuando Aarón y todos los jefes de la comunidad volvieron a donde estaba Moisés, él habló con ellos. 32 Poco después se acercaron todos los israelitas, y Moisés les dio todas las órdenes que el Señor le había dado en el monte Sinaí. 33 Luego que terminó de hablar con ellos, se puso un velo sobre la cara.

34 Cuando Moisés entraba a la presencia del Señor para hablar con él, se quitaba el velo y se quedaba así hasta que salía. Entonces comunicaba a los israelitas las órdenes que había recibido del Señor. 35 Al ver los israelitas que la cara de Moisés resplandecía, él volvía a ponerse el velo sobre la cara, y se lo dejaba puesto hasta que entraba a hablar de nuevo con el Señor.

1 And the Lord said unto Moses, (A)Hew thee two Tables of stone, like unto the first, and I will write upon the Tables the words that were in the first Tables, which thou brakest in pieces.

2 And be ready in the morning, that thou mayest come up early unto the mount of Sinai, and [a]wait there for me in the top of the mount.

3 But let no man come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the sheep nor cattle feed [b]before this mount.

4 Then Moses hewed [c]two Tables of stone like unto the first, and rose up early in the morning, and went up unto the mount of Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand two Tables of stone.

5 And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord.

6 So the Lord passed before his face, and [d]cried, The Lord, the Lord, strong, merciful, and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in goodness and truth.

7 Reserving mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity, and transgression and sin, and not [e]making the wicked innocent, (B)visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon children’s children, unto the third and fourth generation.

8 Then Moses made haste and bowed himself to the earth, and worshipped,

9 And said, O Lord, I pray thee, If I have found grace in thy sight, that the Lord would now go with us ([f]for it is a stiff-necked people) and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

10 And he answered, Behold, (C)I will make a covenant before all thy people, and will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the world, neither in all nations: and all the people among whom thou art, shall see the work of the Lord: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.

11 Keep diligently that which I command thee this day: Behold, I will cast out before thee the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

12 (D)Take heed to thyself, that thou make no compact with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest they be the cause of [g]ruin among you:

13 But ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their images in pieces, and cut down their [h]groves,

14 (For thou shalt bow down to none other god, because the Lord, whose Name is (E)Jealous, is a jealous God.)

15 Lest thou make a (F)compact with the inhabitants of the land, and when they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, some man call thee, and thou (G)eat of his sacrifice.

16 And lest thou take of their (H)daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.

17 Thou shalt make thee no gods of [i]metal.

18 The feast of (I)unleavened bread shalt thou keep: seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the (J)month of Abib: for in the month of Abib thou camest out of Egypt.

19 (K)Every male that first openeth the womb, shall be mine: also all the firstborn of thy flock shall be reckoned mine, both of beeves and sheep.

20 But the first of the ass thou shalt buy out with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then thou shalt break his neck: all the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou redeem, and none shall appear before me(L)[j]empty.

21 (M)Six days shalt thou work, and in the seventh day thou shalt rest: both in earing time, and in the harvest thou shalt rest.

22 (N)Thou shalt also observe the feast of weeks in the time of the firstfruits, of wheat harvest, and the feast of gathering fruits in [k]the end of the year.

23 (O)Thrice in a year shall all your men children appear before the Lord Jehovah God of Israel.

24 For I will cast out the nations before thee and enlarge thy coasts, so that no man shall [l]desire thy land, when thou shalt come up to appear before the Lord thy God thrice in the year.

25 (P)Thou shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven, neither shall ought of the sacrifice of the feast of Passover be left unto the morning.

26 The first ripe fruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the Lord thy God: yet shalt thou not [m]seethe a kid in his mother’s milk.

27 And the Lord said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of (Q)these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.

28 So he was there with the Lord [n]forty days and forty nights, and did neither eat bread nor drink water, and he wrote in the Tables (R)the words of the covenant, even the [o]Ten commandments.

29 ¶ So when Moses came down from mount Sinai, the two Tables of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand, as he descended from the mount: (now Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone bright, after that God had talked with him).

30 And Aaron and all the children of Israel looked upon Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone bright, and they were [p]afraid to come near him.

31 But Moses called them: and Aaron and all the chief of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them.

32 And afterward all the children of Israel came near, and he charged them with all that the Lord had said unto him in mount Sinai.

33 So Moses made an end of communing with them, (S)and had put a covering upon his face.

34 But, when Moses came [q]before the Lord to speak with him, he took off the covering until he came out: then he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.

35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, how the skin of Moses’ face shone bright: therefore Moses put the covering upon his face, until he went to speak with God.

The New Stone Tablets

34 The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones,(A) and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets,(B) which you broke.(C) 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai.(D) Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain;(E) not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.”

4 So Moses chiseled(F) out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.(G) 5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(H) and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord.(I) 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate(J) and gracious God, slow to anger,(K) abounding in love(L) and faithfulness,(M) 7 maintaining love to thousands,(N) and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.(O) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished;(P) he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”(Q)

8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. 9 “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor(R) in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us.(S) Although this is a stiff-necked(T) people, forgive our wickedness and our sin,(U) and take us as your inheritance.”(V)

10 Then the Lord said: “I am making a covenant(W) with you. Before all your people I will do wonders(X) never before done in any nation in all the world.(Y) The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you. 11 Obey what I command(Z) you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.(AA) 12 Be careful not to make a treaty(AB) with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare(AC) among you. 13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.[a](AD) 14 Do not worship any other god,(AE) for the Lord, whose name(AF) is Jealous, is a jealous God.(AG)

15 “Be careful not to make a treaty(AH) with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute(AI) themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices.(AJ) 16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives(AK) for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods,(AL) they will lead your sons to do the same.

17 “Do not make any idols.(AM)

18 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(AN) For seven days eat bread made without yeast,(AO) as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv,(AP) for in that month you came out of Egypt.

19 “The first offspring(AQ) of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.(AR) Redeem all your firstborn sons.(AS)

“No one is to appear before me empty-handed.(AT)

21 “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest;(AU) even during the plowing season and harvest(AV) you must rest.

22 “Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits(AW) of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering(AX) at the turn of the year.[b] 23 Three times(AY) a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord, the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations(AZ) before you and enlarge your territory,(BA) and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the Lord your God.

25 “Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast,(BB) and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Festival remain until morning.(BC)

26 “Bring the best of the firstfruits(BD) of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.

“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”(BE)

27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write(BF) down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant(BG) with you and with Israel.” 28 Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights(BH) without eating bread or drinking water.(BI) And he wrote on the tablets(BJ) the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.(BK)

The Radiant Face of Moses

29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai(BL) with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands,(BM) he was not aware that his face was radiant(BN) because he had spoken with the Lord. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community(BO) came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands(BP) the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.

33 When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil(BQ) over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant.(BR) Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord.
