9 Le peuple qui marchait ╵dans les ténèbres
verra briller ╵une grande lumière :
elle resplendira
sur ceux qui habitaient ╵le pays dominé ╵par d’épaisses ténèbres[a].
2 O Eternel, ╵tu fais abonder l’allégresse[b],
tu fais jaillir ╵une très grande joie
et l’on se réjouit devant toi ╵tout comme au temps de la moisson,
ou comme on crie de joie ╵lors du partage d’un butin.
3 Car le joug qui pesait sur lui,
le bâton qui frappait son dos,
le gourdin de son oppresseur,
toi, tu les as brisés ╵tout comme au jour ╵de la défaite de Madian[c].
4 Toute chaussure de guerrier ╵qui martèle le sol,
et tout manteau ╵que l’on a roulé dans le sang
seront livrés aux flammes,
pour être consumés.
Un enfant nous est né
5 Car un enfant est né pour nous,
un fils nous est donné.
Et il exercera ╵l’autorité royale ;
il sera appelé
Merveilleux Conseiller, Dieu fort,
Père à jamais ╵et Prince de la paix.
6 Il étendra ╵sa souveraineté
et il instaurera ╵la paix qui durera toujours
au trône de David ╵et à tout son royaume.
Sa royauté sera ╵solidement fondée
sur le droit et sur la justice,
dès à présent ╵et pour l’éternité.
Voilà ce que fera ╵le Seigneur des armées célestes ╵dans son ardent amour[d].
Le jugement sur Israël
7 Le Seigneur a lancé ╵un message contre Jacob,
et il s’abat sur Israël[e].
8 Le peuple tout entier ╵en aura connaissance,
le peuple d’Ephraïm, ╵les habitants de Samarie
qui disent, pleins d’orgueil ╵et le cœur arrogant :
9 « Les briques sont tombées,
mais nous reconstruirons ╵en pierres bien taillées ;
les sycomores ╵ont été abattus,
par des cèdres nous les remplacerons. »
10 L’Eternel a dressé contre eux
les adversaires de Retsîn
et il a excité leurs ennemis[f] :
11 les Syriens qui sont à l’orient, ╵les Philistins à l’occident ;
ils dévoreront Israël ╵à belles dents.
Mais malgré tout cela, ╵son courroux ne s’apaise pas,
sa main reste levée.
12 Le peuple n’est pas revenu ╵à l’Eternel qui le frappait,
il ne s’est pas tourné ╵vers l’Eternel, ╵le Seigneur des armées célestes.
13 C’est pourquoi l’Eternel ╵ôtera d’Israël ╵la tête avec la queue,
la palme et le roseau[g]
en un seul jour.
14 Le dirigeant et le notable ╵sont la tête du peuple,
et le prophète ╵enseignant le mensonge ╵en est la queue.
15 Les guides de ce peuple ╵l’égarent,
et ceux qui sont guidés ╵sont conduits à la ruine.
16 C’est pourquoi le Seigneur ╵ne sera pas clément[h] ╵envers ses jeunes gens,
il n’aura pas pitié ╵des orphelins, des veuves.
Car tous méprisent Dieu ╵et font le mal,
tous profèrent ╵des propos insensés.
Mais, malgré tout cela, ╵son courroux ne s’apaise pas,
sa main reste levée.
17 Car la méchanceté ╵brûle comme le feu,
qui consume les ronces ╵et les épines,
et elle embrase ╵les buissons des forêts.
La fumée s’en élève ╵vers le ciel en volutes.
18 Par la fureur de l’Eternel, ╵le Seigneur des armées célestes,
le pays est en flammes
et le peuple devient ╵la proie du feu.
Nul n’a pitié de son prochain.
19 On grappille à sa droite ╵et l’on reste affamé,
on dévore à sa gauche, ╵sans être rassasié.
On va jusqu’à manger ╵la chair de ses enfants[i].
20 Manassé dévore Ephraïm,
et Ephraïm dévore Manassé,
tous les deux vont ensemble ╵se jeter sur Juda.

El reinado del Príncipe de paz
La tierra de Zabulón y Neftalí es una región de Galilea, cerca de donde habitan pueblos que no adoran a nuestro Dios. Esa región se extiende desde el otro lado del río Jordán hasta la orilla del mar. Hace mucho tiempo, Dios humilló a esa región de Galilea, pero después le concedió un gran honor, el cual Isaías anunció así:
2 «Aunque tu gente viva en la oscuridad,
verá una gran luz.
Una luz alumbrará
a los que vivan
en las tinieblas.
3 ¡Dios nuestro,
tú nos has llenado de alegría!
Todos nos alegramos en tu presencia,
como cuando llega la cosecha,
como cuando la gente
se reparte muchas riquezas.
4 Tú nos has liberado
de los que nos esclavizaron.
Tu victoria sobre ellos fue tan grande
como tu victoria sobre el pueblo de Madián.

8-9 Isaías le dijo al pueblo de Israel:
«Dios le ha advertido a Israel
que lo va a castigar.

10 “No importa que hayan tirado

9 But [in the midst of judgment there is the promise and the certainty of the Lord’s deliverance and] there shall be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time [the Lord] brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time He will make it glorious, by the way of the Sea [of Galilee, the land] beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great Light; those who dwelt in the land of intense darkness and the shadow of death, upon them has the Light shined.(A)
3 You [O Lord] have multiplied the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before You like the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil [of battle].
4 For the yoke of [Israel’s] burden, and the staff or rod for [goading] their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, You have broken as in the day of [Gideon with] Midian.(B)
5 For every [tramping] warrior’s war boots and all his armor in the battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father [of Eternity], Prince of Peace.(C)
7 Of the increase of His government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from the [latter] time forth, even forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.(D)
8 The Lord has sent a word against Jacob [the ten tribes], and it has lighted upon Israel [the ten tribes, the kingdom of Ephraim].
9 And all the people shall know it—even Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria [its capital]—who said in pride and stoutness of heart,
10 The bricks have fallen, but we will build [all the better] with hewn stones; the sycamores have been cut down, but we will put [costlier] cedars in their place.
11 Therefore the Lord has stirred up the adversaries [the Assyrians] of Rezin [king of Syria] against [Ephraim], and He will stir up their enemies and arm and join them together,
12 The Syrians [compelled to fight with their enemies, going] before [on the east] and the Philistines behind [on the west]; and they will devour Israel with open mouth. For all this, [God’s] anger is not [then] turned away, but His hand is still stretched out [in judgment].
13 Yet the people turn not to Him Who smote them, neither do they seek [inquire for or require as their vital need] the Lord of hosts.
14 Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head and tail [the highest and the lowest]—[high] palm branch and [low] rush in one day;
15 The elderly and honored man, he is the head; and the prophet who teaches lies, he is the tail.
16 For they who lead this people cause them to err, and they who are led [astray] by them are swallowed up (destroyed).
17 Therefore the Lord will not rejoice over their young men, neither will He have compassion on their fatherless and widows, for everyone is profane and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this, [God’s] anger is not turned away, but His hand is still stretched out [in judgment].
18 For wickedness burns like a fire; it devours the briers and thorns, and it kindles in the thickets of the forest; they roll upward in a column of smoke.
19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land is darkened and burned up, and the people are like fuel for the fire; no man spares his brother.
20 They snatch in discord on the right hand, but are still hungry [their cruelty not diminished]; and they devour and destroy on the left hand, but are not satisfied. Each devours and destroys his own flesh [and blood] or his neighbor’s.
21 Manasseh [thirsts for the blood of his brother] Ephraim, and Ephraim [for that of] Manasseh; but together they are against Judah. For all this, [God’s] anger is not turned away, but His hand is still stretched out [in judgment].

9 [a]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(A) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(B) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—
2 The people walking in darkness(C)
have seen a great light;(D)
on those living in the land of deep darkness(E)
a light has dawned.(F)
3 You have enlarged the nation(G)
and increased their joy;(H)
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.(I)
4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(J)
you have shattered(K)
the yoke(L) that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,(M)
the rod of their oppressor.(N)
5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,(O)
will be fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born,(P)
to us a son is given,(Q)
and the government(R) will be on his shoulders.(S)
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor,(T) Mighty God,(U)

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel
8 The Lord has sent a message(AG) against Jacob;
it will fall on Israel.
9 All the people will know it—
Ephraim(AH) and the inhabitants of Samaria(AI)—
who say with pride
and arrogance(AJ) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(AK)
the fig(AL) trees have been felled,
but we will replace them with cedars.(AM)”
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s(AN) foes against them
and has spurred their enemies on.
12 Arameans(AO) from the east and Philistines(AP) from the west
have devoured(AQ) Israel with open mouth.
13 But the people have not returned(AT) to him who struck(AU) them,
nor have they sought(AV) the Lord Almighty.
14 So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail,
both palm branch and reed(AW) in a single day;(AX)
15 the elders(AY) and dignitaries(AZ) are the head,
the prophets(BA) who teach lies(BB) are the tail.
16 Those who guide(BC) this people mislead them,
and those who are guided are led astray.(BD)
