24 Voici, l'Éternel dévaste le pays et le rend désert, Il en bouleverse la face et en disperse les habitants.
2 Et il en est du sacrificateur comme du peuple, Du maître comme du serviteur, De la maîtresse comme de la servante, Du vendeur comme de l'acheteur, Du prêteur comme de l'emprunteur, Du créancier comme du débiteur.
3 Le pays est dévasté, livré au pillage; Car l'Éternel l'a décrété.
4 Le pays est triste, épuisé; Les habitants sont abattus, languissants; Les chefs du peuple sont sans force.
5 Le pays était profané par ses habitants; Car ils transgressaient les lois, violaient les ordonnances, Ils rompaient l'alliance éternelle.
6 C'est pourquoi la malédiction dévore le pays, Et ses habitants portent la peine de leurs crimes; C'est pourquoi les habitants du pays sont consumés, Et il n'en reste qu'un petit nombre.
7 Le moût est triste, la vigne est flétrie; Tous ceux qui avaient le coeur joyeux soupirent.
8 La joie des tambourins a cessé, la gaîté bruyante a pris fin, La joie de la harpe a cessé.
9 On ne boit plus de vin en chantant; Les liqueurs fortes sont amères au buveur.
10 La ville déserte est en ruines; Toutes les maisons sont fermées, on n'y entre plus.
11 On crie dans les rues, parce que le vin manque; Toute réjouissance a disparu, L'allégresse est bannie du pays.
12 La dévastation est restée dans la ville, Et les portes abattues sont en ruines.
13 Car il en est dans le pays, au milieu des peuples, Comme quand on secoue l'olivier, Comme quand on grappille après la vendange.
14 Ils élèvent leur voix, ils poussent des cris d'allégresse; Des bords de la mer, ils célèbrent la majesté de l'Éternel.
15 Glorifiez donc l'Éternel dans les lieux où brille la lumière, Le nom de l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, dans les îles de la mer! -
16 De l'extrémité de la terre nous entendons chanter: Gloire au juste! Mais moi je dis: Je suis perdu! je suis perdu! malheur à moi! Les pillards pillent, et les pillards s'acharnent au pillage.
17 La terreur, la fosse, et le filet, Sont sur toi, habitant du pays!
18 Celui qui fuit devant les cris de terreur tombe dans la fosse, Et celui qui remonte de la fosse se prend au filet; Car les écluses d'en haut s'ouvrent, Et les fondements de la terre sont ébranlés.
19 La terre est déchirée, La terre se brise, La terre chancelle.
20 La terre chancelle comme un homme ivre, Elle vacille comme une cabane; Son péché pèse sur elle, Elle tombe, et ne se relève plus.
21 En ce temps-là, l'Éternel châtiera dans le ciel l'armée d'en haut, Et sur la terre les rois de la terre.
22 Ils seront assemblés captifs dans une prison, Ils seront enfermés dans des cachots, Et, après un grand nombre de jours, ils seront châtiés.
23 La lune sera couverte de honte, Et le soleil de confusion; Car l'Éternel des armées régnera Sur la montagne de Sion et à Jérusalem, Resplendissant de gloire en présence de ses anciens.

Sur les bouleversements à venir
L’Eternel dévaste la terre
24 Oui, l’Eternel ╵va dévaster la terre, ╵il va la ravager,
en bouleverser la surface ; ╵il en dispersera ╵les habitants.
2 Un même sort atteint ╵le prêtre et le commun du peuple,
le maître et son esclave,
la dame et sa servante,
vendeur et acheteur,
emprunteur et prêteur,
débiteur, créancier.
3 La terre sera dévastée ╵totalement, ╵pillée de fond en comble,
car l’Eternel lui-même ╵a prononcé cette sentence.
4 La terre se dessèche et se dégrade,
le monde dépérit et se dégrade,
les gens haut placés de la terre ╵dépérissent aussi.
5 La terre a été profanée ╵par ceux qui y habitent,
car ils ont transgressé les lois,
altéré les commandements
et violé l’alliance éternelle[a].
6 A cause de cela, ╵la terre se consume ╵par la malédiction,
ceux qui l’habitent ╵en portent la condamnation
et c’est pourquoi ils se consument ;
il n’en subsiste ╵qu’un petit nombre.
7 Le vin nouveau est triste,
la vigne est languissante
et tous les bons vivants ╵gémissent maintenant.
8 On n’entend plus le son ╵des joyeux tambourins,
le bruit tumultueux ╵des gens en liesse a disparu
et la musique allègre ╵de la lyre a cessé.
9 On ne boit plus de vin ╵en chantant des chansons,
les boissons enivrantes ╵sont devenues amères ╵pour tous ceux qui les boivent.
10 Elle est détruite, ╵la cité du néant.
Toute demeure est close,
on n’y peut plus entrer.
11 Dans les rues, on se plaint
qu’il n’y ait plus de vin ;
il n’y a plus de joie,
toute allégresse ╵est bannie de la terre.
12 Il ne reste plus dans la ville ╵que la désolation ;
sa porte est fracassée, ╵elle est en ruine.
13 Il en sera sur terre ╵parmi les peuples
comme au gaulage des olives
ou comme au grappillage des raisins ╵quand la vendange est terminée.
Louanges
14 Alors les survivants ╵élèveront la voix,
ils pousseront des cris de joie
pour acclamer ╵la majesté de l’Eternel ;
ils chanteront de joie ╵à l’occident,
15 à l’orient, ╵ils proclameront la gloire de l’Eternel.
La renommée de l’Eternel, ╵Dieu d’Israël,
s’étendra jusqu’aux îles ╵et aux régions côtières.
16 Des confins de la terre,
nous entendrons chanter :
« Honneur au Juste ».
Intervention divine contre les tyrans
Mais moi je dis : ╵Je suis à bout, je suis à bout. ╵Malheur à moi !
Car les traîtres trahissent,
oui, les traîtres trahissent ╵traîtreusement.
17 L’effroi, la fosse et le filet
vous atteindront, ╵habitants de la terre[b] !
18 Et il arrivera ╵que celui qui fuira ╵devant les cris d’effroi
tombera dans la fosse.
Qui remontera de la fosse
sera pris au filet.
Les écluses du ciel en haut ╵se sont ouvertes[c].
Et les fondements de la terre ╵ont été ébranlés.
19 La terre se déchire
et se fissure,
elle vacille,
20 elle oscille et titube, ╵pareille à un ivrogne,
et elle est ébranlée ╵tout comme une cabane,
car le poids de son crime ╵pèse sur elle.
Elle tombe et jamais ╵ne se relèvera.
21 Il adviendra, en ce jour-là, ╵que l’Eternel interviendra
là-haut, contre l’armée d’en haut
et contre les rois de ce monde ╵ici-bas sur la terre.
22 On les rassemblera
captifs, tous dans la fosse ;
ils seront enfermés ╵à l’intérieur d’une prison ;
après un temps très long
ils seront tous châtiés[d].
23 La lune sera humiliée,
et le soleil couvert de honte,
car l’Eternel, ╵le Seigneur des armées célestes, règne
sur le mont de Sion ╵et à Jérusalem.
Il fera resplendir sa gloire ╵devant les responsables de son peuple[e].

The Lord’s Devastation of the Earth
24 See, the Lord is going to lay waste the earth(A)
and devastate(B) it;
he will ruin its face
and scatter(C) its inhabitants—
2 it will be the same
for priest as for people,(D)
for the master as for his servant,
for the mistress as for her servant,
for seller as for buyer,(E)
for borrower as for lender,
for debtor as for creditor.(F)
3 The earth will be completely laid waste(G)
and totally plundered.(H)
The Lord has spoken(I) this word.
4 The earth dries up(J) and withers,(K)
the world languishes and withers,
the heavens(L) languish with the earth.(M)
5 The earth is defiled(N) by its people;
they have disobeyed(O) the laws,
violated the statutes
and broken the everlasting covenant.(P)
6 Therefore a curse(Q) consumes the earth;
its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,(R)
and very few are left.
7 The new wine dries up(S) and the vine withers;(T)
all the merrymakers groan.(U)
8 The joyful timbrels(V) are stilled,
the noise(W) of the revelers(X) has stopped,
the joyful harp(Y) is silent.(Z)
9 No longer do they drink wine(AA) with a song;
the beer is bitter(AB) to its drinkers.
10 The ruined city(AC) lies desolate;(AD)
the entrance to every house is barred.
11 In the streets they cry out(AE) for wine;(AF)
all joy turns to gloom,(AG)
all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.
12 The city is left in ruins,(AH)
its gate(AI) is battered to pieces.
13 So will it be on the earth
and among the nations,
as when an olive tree is beaten,(AJ)
or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.(AK)
14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy;(AL)
from the west(AM) they acclaim the Lord’s majesty.
15 Therefore in the east(AN) give glory(AO) to the Lord;
exalt(AP) the name(AQ) of the Lord, the God of Israel,
in the islands(AR) of the sea.
16 From the ends of the earth(AS) we hear singing:(AT)
“Glory(AU) to the Righteous One.”(AV)
But I said, “I waste away, I waste away!(AW)
Woe(AX) to me!
The treacherous(AY) betray!
With treachery the treacherous betray!(AZ)”
17 Terror(BA) and pit and snare(BB) await you,
people of the earth.(BC)
18 Whoever flees(BD) at the sound of terror
will fall into a pit;(BE)
whoever climbs out of the pit
will be caught in a snare.(BF)
The floodgates of the heavens(BG) are opened,
the foundations of the earth shake.(BH)
19 The earth is broken up,(BI)
the earth is split asunder,(BJ)
the earth is violently shaken.
20 The earth reels like a drunkard,(BK)
it sways like a hut(BL) in the wind;
so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion(BM)
that it falls(BN)—never to rise again.(BO)
21 In that day(BP) the Lord will punish(BQ)
the powers(BR) in the heavens above
and the kings(BS) on the earth below.
22 They will be herded together
like prisoners(BT) bound in a dungeon;(BU)
they will be shut up in prison
and be punished[a] after many days.(BV)
23 The moon will be dismayed,
the sun(BW) ashamed;
for the Lord Almighty will reign(BX)
on Mount Zion(BY) and in Jerusalem,
and before its elders—with great glory.(BZ)

24 Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.
2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.
3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the Lord hath spoken this word.
4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.
5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.
6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.
7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh.
8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.
9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.
10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.
11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.
12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.
13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.
14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the Lord, they shall cry aloud from the sea.
15 Wherefore glorify ye the Lord in the fires, even the name of the Lord God of Israel in the isles of the sea.
16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
