Isaiah 11:1-9

New International Version

The Branch From Jesse

11 A shoot^(A) will come up from the stump^(B) of Jesse;^(C)
    from his roots a Branch^(D) will bear fruit.^(E)
²The Spirit^(F) of the Lord will rest on him—
    the Spirit of wisdom^(G) and of understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and of might,^(H)
    the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
³and he will delight in the fear^(I) of the Lord.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,^(J)
    or decide by what he hears with his ears;^(K)
⁴but with righteousness^(L) he will judge the needy,^(M)
    with justice^(N) he will give decisions for the poor^(O) of the earth.
He will strike^(P) the earth with the rod of his mouth;^(Q)
    with the breath^(R) of his lips he will slay the wicked.^(S)
⁵Righteousness will be his belt^(T)
    and faithfulness^(U) the sash around his waist.^(V)

⁶The wolf will live with the lamb,^(W)
    the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling^[a] together;
    and a little child will lead them.
⁷The cow will feed with the bear,
    their young will lie down together,
    and the lion will eat straw like the ox.^(X)
⁸The infant^(Y) will play near the cobra’s den,
    and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s^(Z) nest.
⁹They will neither harm nor destroy^(AA)
    on all my holy mountain,^(AB)
for the earth^(AC) will be filled with the knowledge^(AD) of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

Eleazar the father of Matthan,

Matthan the father of Jacob,

¹⁶and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary,^(Q) and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.^(R)

¹⁷Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Romans 15:4-13

⁴For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us,^(A) so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

⁵May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind^(B) toward each other that Christ Jesus had, ⁶so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify^(C) the God and Father^(D) of our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁷Accept one another,^(E) then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. ⁸For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews^[a]^(F) on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises^(G) made to the patriarchs might be confirmed ⁹and, moreover, that the Gentiles^(H) might glorify God^(I) for his mercy. As it is written:

“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles;
I will sing the praises of your name.”^[b]^(J)

¹⁰Again, it says,

“Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”^[c]^(K)

¹¹And again,

“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles;
let all the peoples extol him.”^[d]^(L)

¹²And again, Isaiah says,

“The Root of Jesse^(M) will spring up,
one who will arise to rule over the nations;
in him the Gentiles will hope.”^[e]^(N)

¹³May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace^(O) as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.^(P)
