27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(A) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,(B) Mary; you have found favor with God.(C) 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(D) 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(E) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(F) 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom(G) will never end.”(H)

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,(I) and the power of the Most High(J) will overshadow you. So the holy one(K) to be born will be called[a] the Son of God.(L) 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child(M) in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”(N)

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

38 For I have come down from heaven(A) not to do my will but to do the will(B) of him who sent me.(C) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(D) but raise them up at the last day.(E) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(F) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(G) and I will raise them up at the last day.”

41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(H) whose father and mother we know?(I) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(J)

43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(K) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[a](L) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(M) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(N) 48 I am the bread of life.(O) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(P) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(Q) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(R) that came down from heaven.(S) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(T)

52 Then the Jews(U) began to argue sharply among themselves,(V) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(W) of the Son of Man(X) and drink his blood,(Y) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(Z) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(AA) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(AB) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(AC)
