¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you^(A) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.^(B)

² Do not conform^(A) to the pattern of this world,^(B) but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.^(C) Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is^(D)—his good, pleasing^(E) and perfect will.

Living as Those Made Alive in Christ

3 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ,^(A) set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.^{(B) 2} Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.^(C)

⁴ You, dear children,^(A) are from God and have overcome them,^(B) because the one who is in you^(C) is greater than the one who is in the world.^{(D) 5} They are from the world^(E) and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. ⁶ We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us.^(F) This is how we recognize the Spirit^[a] of truth^(G) and the spirit of falsehood.^(H)

God’s Love and Ours

⁷ Dear friends, let us love one another,^(I) for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God^(J) and knows God.^{(K) 8} Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.^{(L) 9} This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son^(M) into the world that we might live through him.^{(N) 10} This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us^(O) and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.^{(P) 11} Dear friends,^(Q) since God so loved us,^(R) we also ought to love one another.^{(S) 12} No one has ever seen God;^(T) but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.^(U)

¹³ This is how we know^(V) that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.^{(W) 14} And we have seen and testify^(X) that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.^{(Y) 15} If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God,^(Z) God lives in them and they in God.^{(AA) 16} And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love.^(AB) Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.^{(AC) 17} This is how love is made complete^(AD) among us so that we will have confidence^(AE) on the day of judgment:^(AF) In this world we are like Jesus. ¹⁸ There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear,^(AG) because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

¹⁹ We love because he first loved us.^{(AH) 20} Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister^(AI) is a liar.^(AJ) For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen,^(AK) cannot love God, whom they have not seen.^{(AL) 21} And he has given us this command:^(AM) Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.^(AN)
