ダビデとゴリヤテ
17 ところで、ペリシテ人はイスラエルに戦いをしかけようと軍隊を召集し、ユダのソコとアゼカとの間にあるエフェス・ダミムに陣を敷きました。 2 サウルはこれに応戦するため、エラの谷に兵力を集めて戦いに備えました。 3 ペリシテ人とイスラエル人は、互いに谷を隔てた丘の上でにらみ合うかたちになりました。
4-7 その時、ゴリヤテというガテ出身のペリシテ一の豪傑が陣地から出て来て、イスラエル軍に向き合いました。身長が約三メートルもある巨人で、青銅のかぶとをかぶり、五十七キロもあるよろいに身を固め、青銅のすね当てを着け、七キロもある鉄の穂先のついた太い青銅の投げ槍を持っていました。盾持ちが、大きな盾をかかえて先に立っていました。
8 仁王立ちのゴリヤテは、イスラエルの陣営に響き渡るように大声で叫びました。「よく、こうもたくさんそろえたもんだ。おれはペリシテ人の代表だ。おまえらも代表を一人選んで一騎打ちをし、それで勝負をつけようじゃないか。 9 もし、おまえらの代表の手にかかっておれ様が倒れでもすりゃあ、おれたちは奴隷になる。だが、おれ様が勝ったなら、おまえらが奴隷になるのだ。 10 さあ、どうした。イスラエル軍には人がいないのか。おれと戦う勇気のあるやつは出て来い。」
11 サウルとイスラエル軍は、これを聞いてすっかり取り乱し、震え上がってしまいました。
12 エフラテ人エッサイの子のダビデには七人の兄がいました。 13 三人の兄エリアブとアビナダブとシャマは、このペリシテ人との戦いに義勇兵として従軍しており、 14-15 末っ子のダビデはサウルの身辺の警護に当たりながら、時々ベツレヘムへ帰り、羊を飼う父の仕事を手伝っていました。
16 さて、巨人ゴリヤテは四十日間、毎日、朝と夕の二回、イスラエル軍の前に姿を現しては、これ見よがしにのし歩いてみせました。
17 ある日、エッサイはダビデに言いつけました。「さあ、この炒り麦一エパ（二十三リットル）とパン十個を、兄さんたちに届けてくれないか。 18 このチーズは隊長さんに差し上げ、あの子たちの様子を見て来ておくれ。あの子たちから何かことづかってくることも忘れないようにな。」
19 サウルとイスラエル軍は、エラの谷に陣を張っていました。
20 ダビデは翌朝早く、羊を他の羊飼いに任せ、食べ物をかかえて出かけました。陣営のはずれまで来ると、ちょうどイスラエル軍がときの声を上げて戦場へ向かうところでした。 21 やがて、敵味方が互いににらみ合う態勢となりました。 22 ダビデは持って来た包みを荷物係に預け、兄たちに会うために陣地へ駆けだしました。 23 兄たちと話をしながらふと見ると、敵陣から大男が向かって来ます。あのゴリヤテです。彼はいつものように、ふてぶてしく挑発してきました。
24 イスラエル軍はゴリヤテを見ると、おじけづいて後ずさりを始めました。 25 「あの大男を見ろよ。イスラエル軍をなめていやがる。あいつを倒した者には、王様からしこたまごほうびが頂けるそうだ。王女の婿にしてもらえるうえ、一族はみな税を免除されるそうだ。」
26 ダビデは、ほんとうの話かどうか、そばにいる人たちに確かめようと尋ねました。「あのペリシテ人を倒して、イスラエルへの悪口雑言をやめさせた者には、何をしていただけるのでしょうか。全く、生ける神様の軍をなぶりものにするなんて！ いったい、あの、神様を知らないペリシテ人は何者ですか。」 27 人々は、先ほどのことばをくり返しました。
28 ところが長兄エリアブは、ダビデがそんな話に首を突っ込んでいるのを聞いて、腹を立てました。「いったい、ここへ来て何をしようというのだ。羊の世話はどうした。とんでもないうぬぼれ屋め。戦見たさに、のこのこやって来たんだろう。」
29 「僕が何をしたっていうんです？ ちょっと尋ねただけじゃありませんか。」
30 ダビデはほかの人のところへ行って、次々に同じ質問をして回りました。だれからも同じような答えが返ってきます。 31 そのうち、ダビデのことばの裏にある意図をくんだだれかが、そのことをサウル王に告げたので、王はダビデを呼びにやりました。 32 ダビデはきっぱりとサウルに言いました。「こんなことで何も心配には及びません。私が、あのペリシテ人を片付けましょう。」
33 サウルは言いました。「冗談を言うな！ おまえみたいな小僧が、どうしてあんな大男と渡り合えるのだ。あいつは若い時から鍛え抜かれた戦士だぞ！」
34 「私は父の羊を飼っているのですが、ライオンや熊が現れて、群れの子羊を奪って行くことがよくあります。 35 そんな時、私は棒を持って追いかけ、その口から子羊を助け出すんです。もしそいつらが襲いかかって来たら、あごひげをつかんでたたきのめします。 36 ライオンも熊も、こうしてやっつけてきました。あの、神様を知らないペリシテ人だって、同じ目に会わせてやります。生ける神様の軍をばかにした男ですから。 37 ライオンや熊の爪や歯から守ってくださった神様は、あのペリシテ人の手からも、私を守ってくださるに違いありません。」
サウルは、ついに首をたてに振りました。「よし、わかった。行きなさい。主がついておられるように。」
38-39 サウルは、自分の青銅のかぶととよろいをダビデに与えました。ダビデはそれをまとい、剣を持ち、試しに一、二歩、歩いてみました。そんなものを身に着けたことがなかったのです。しかし、「これじゃ、身動きがとれません」と言うや、脱ぎ、 40 川からなめらかな石を五つ拾って来ると、羊飼いが使う袋に入れました。そして、羊飼いの杖と石投げだけを持って、ゴリヤテに向かって行ったのです。
41-42 ゴリヤテは盾持ちを先に立て、ゆっくり近づいて来ましたが、まだ初々しい少年だとわかると、ふふんと鼻で笑い、大声で言いました。 43 「杖なんか持って来やがって、おれ様を犬っころ扱いする気か。」彼は自分の神々の名を挙げてダビデをのろい、 44 「さあ、来い。おまえの肉を鳥や獣にくれてやるわい！」と叫びました。
45 ダビデも負けずに答えました。「おまえは剣と槍で立ち向かって来るが、私は天地の主であり、おまえがばかにしたイスラエルの主のお名前によって立ち向かうのだ。 46 今日、主がおまえを打ち負かしてくださる。おまえの息の根を止め、首をはねてやるからな。そして、ペリシテ人らのしかばねを鳥や獣にくれてやる。すべての国々は、イスラエルに神様がおられることを知るのだ。 47 そしてイスラエルは、主が武器に頼らずにご計画を実現なさるということ、神様のなさることは人間の企てとは無関係だということを学ぶのだ。主はおまえたちを、私たちの手に渡してくださる。」
48-49 近づいて来るゴリヤテめがけて、ダビデは駆け寄りました。そして、袋から石を一つ取り出すと、石投げでビュンとそれを放ちました。石はゴリヤテの額にみごと命中し、額に食い込み、ゴリヤテの巨体は揺らいで、うつぶせに倒れました。
50-51 ダビデは石投げと石一つで、このペリシテ人の大男をしとめたのです。剣を持っていなかったダビデは、走り寄ってゴリヤテの剣を抜き、それでとどめを刺して、首をはねました。ペリシテ人は自分たちの代表戦士がやられてしまったので、しっぽを巻いて逃げ出しました。 52 イスラエル軍は、どっと勝ちどきを上げると、あとを追いかけ、ガテとエクロンの門まで追撃しました。シャアライムへ至る道のそこかしこに、ペリシテ人の死者や負傷者があふれました。 53 イスラエル軍は引き返して、もぬけの殻となったペリシテ人の陣地を略奪しました。 54 ダビデはゴリヤテの首を持ってエルサレムへ帰り、ゴリヤテが着けていた武具を自分の天幕に保管しました。
55 サウル王は、ダビデがゴリヤテと戦うために出て行くのを見た時、司令官のアブネルに尋ねました。「アブネル。あの若者は、どんな家系の出なんだ。」
「それが、全くわからないのです。」
56 「そうか。では、さっそく調べてくれ。」
57 ダビデがゴリヤテを倒して帰って来ると、アブネルはその首をかかえたダビデを、王の前へ連れて来ました。 58 「みごとであった。ところで、おまえの父親はどういう人かね。」王は尋ねました。「父はエッサイと申して、ベツレヘムに住んでおります。」

David and Goliath
17 Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled(A) at Sokoh in Judah. They pitched camp at Ephes Dammim, between Sokoh(B) and Azekah.(C) 2 Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah(D) and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines. 3 The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the valley between them.
4 A champion named Goliath,(E) who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span.[a] 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels[b]; 6 on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin(F) was slung on his back. 7 His spear shaft was like a weaver’s rod,(G) and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels.[c] His shield bearer(H) went ahead of him.
8 Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose(I) a man and have him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” 10 Then the Philistine said, “This day I defy(J) the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.(K)” 11 On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.
12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite(L) named Jesse,(M) who was from Bethlehem(N) in Judah. Jesse had eight(O) sons, and in Saul’s time he was very old. 13 Jesse’s three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war: The firstborn was Eliab;(P) the second, Abinadab;(Q) and the third, Shammah.(R) 14 David was the youngest. The three oldest followed Saul, 15 but David went back and forth from Saul to tend(S) his father’s sheep(T) at Bethlehem.
16 For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.
17 Now Jesse said to his son David, “Take this ephah[d](U) of roasted grain(V) and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. 18 Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers(W) are and bring back some assurance[e] from them. 19 They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.”
20 Early in the morning David left the flock in the care of a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. 21 Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other. 22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies,(X) ran to the battle lines and asked his brothers how they were. 23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual(Y) defiance, and David heard it. 24 Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear.
25 Now the Israelites had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter(Z) in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes(AA) in Israel.”
26 David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace(AB) from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised(AC) Philistine that he should defy(AD) the armies of the living(AE) God?”
27 They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, “This is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger(AF) at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”
29 “Now what have I done?” said David. “Can’t I even speak?” 30 He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before. 31 What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him.
32 David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart(AG) on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”
33 Saul replied,(AH) “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion(AI) or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized(AJ) it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion(AK) and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued(AL) me from the paw of the lion(AM) and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with(AN) you.”
38 Then Saul dressed David in his own(AO) tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. 39 David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them.
“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.
41 Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer(AP) in front of him, kept coming closer to David. 42 He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome,(AQ) and he despised(AR) him. 43 He said to David, “Am I a dog,(AS) that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds(AT) and the wild animals!(AU)”
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin,(AV) but I come against you in the name(AW) of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.(AX) 46 This day the Lord will deliver(AY) you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses(AZ) of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world(BA) will know that there is a God in Israel.(BB) 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword(BC) or spear that the Lord saves;(BD) for the battle(BE) is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling(BF) and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
51 David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut(BG) off his head with the sword.(BH)
When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath[f] and to the gates of Ekron.(BI) Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim(BJ) road to Gath and Ekron. 53 When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines, they plundered their camp.
54 David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem; he put the Philistine’s weapons in his own tent.
55 As Saul watched David(BK) going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, “Abner,(BL) whose son is that young man?”
Abner replied, “As surely as you live, Your Majesty, I don’t know.”
56 The king said, “Find out whose son this young man is.”
57 As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine’s head.
58 “Whose son are you, young man?” Saul asked him.
David said, “I am the son of your servant Jesse(BM) of Bethlehem.”

9 ああ主よ。
心を尽くしてあなたをたたえます。
目をみはるばかりの働きを、すべての人に伝えます。
2 私はうれしくてなりません。
あなたのおかげで喜びがあふれてきます。
あらゆる神々にまさる神、主よ。
私はあなたをほめ歌います。
3 敵は御前でたじろぎ、滅び去ります。
4 あなたは私を弁護してくださいました。
御座から私の行いを支持し、
私の潔白を保証してくださいました。
5 あなたは諸国の民をしかり、
悪者を滅ぼし、その名を永久に消し去られました。
6 敵対する者たちよ。
おまえたちの行き着く先は、永遠の滅びだ。
主はおまえたちの町々を廃墟となさるので、
その町があったことさえ、
人々の記憶から消えうせるだろう。
7-8 しかし、主は永遠に生きておられます。
主は御座につき、
世界中の国々を正しくおさばきになります。
9 虐待された人々はみな、主のもとに来ます。
主は苦しむ人々の隠れ家です。

12 人を殺す者に報復なさるお方は、
正しいさばきを求める者の叫びに耳を貸します。
苦しんで助けを求める者の祈りを

13 ああ主よ、私をあわれんでください。
私を憎む者の手にかかって
私がどんなに苦しんでいるか、目を留めてください。
主よ、死の口から私を引き出してください。
14 どうかお救いください。
そうなれば、エルサレムの門に集まる
すべての人の前であなたをたたえ、
救い出された喜びを語ることができます。
15-16 異邦の民は、人を落とそうと掘った穴に落ち込みます。
自分のしかけた罠にかかります。
17 悪者は地獄へ送り込まれます。
これが、主を忘れた民の定めです。
18 困っている者の窮状は、
いつまでも放っておかれるわけではありません。
貧しい者の願いは、
いつも踏みにじられるとは限らないのです。
19 ああ主よ、立ち上がってください。

1 I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;(A)
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.(B)
2 I will be glad and rejoice(C) in you;
I will sing the praises(D) of your name,(E) O Most High.
3 My enemies turn back;
they stumble and perish before you.
4 For you have upheld my right(F) and my cause,(G)
sitting enthroned(H) as the righteous judge.(I)
5 You have rebuked the nations(J) and destroyed the wicked;
you have blotted out their name(K) for ever and ever.
6 Endless ruin has overtaken my enemies,
you have uprooted their cities;(L)
even the memory of them(M) has perished.
7 The Lord reigns forever;(N)
he has established his throne(O) for judgment.
8 He rules the world in righteousness(P)
and judges the peoples with equity.(Q)
9 The Lord is a refuge(R) for the oppressed,(S)

all the nations that forget God.(AN)
18 But God will never forget the needy;

2 イエスはヘロデ大王の時代に、ユダヤのベツレヘムの町でお生まれになりました。そのころ、天文学者たちが、東の国からはるばるエルサレムへやって来て、こう尋ねました。 2 「このたびお生まれになったユダヤ人の王様は、どこにおられますか。私たちは、その方の星をはるか東の国で見たので、その方を拝むために参ったのです。」
3 それを聞いたヘロデ大王は、ひどくうろたえ、エルサレム中がそのうわさで騒然となりました。 4 ヘロデはさっそくユダヤ人の宗教的指導者たちを召集し、「預言者たちは、メシヤ（ヘブル語で、救い主）がどこで生まれると告げているのか」と尋ねました。
5 彼らは答えました。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者ミカがこう書いております。
6 『ベツレヘムよ。
あなたはユダヤの中で、
決して小さな町ではない。
あなたから偉大な支配者が出て、
わたしの国民イスラエルを
治めるようになるからだ。』（ミカ5・2）」
7 それでヘロデは、ひそかに天文学者たちを呼びにやり、その星が初めて現れた正確な時刻を聞き出しました。 8 そして彼らに、「さあ、ベツレヘムへ行って、その子を捜すがいい。見つかったら、必ず知らせてくれ。私も、ぜひその方を拝みに行きたいから」と命じました。
9 彼らがさっそく出発すると、なんと、あの星がまた現れて、彼らをベツレヘムに導き、とある家の上にとどまりました。 10 それを見た彼らは、躍り上がって喜びました。
11 その家に入ると、幼子と母マリヤがいました。彼らはひれ伏して、その幼子を拝みました。そして宝の箱を開け、黄金と乳香（香料の一種）と没薬（天然ゴムの樹脂で、古代の貴重な防腐剤）を贈り物としてささげました。 12 それから、ヘロデ大王に報告をしにエルサレムへは戻らず、そのまま自分たちの国へ帰って行きました。神から夢の中で、ほかの道を通って帰るように警告を受けたからです。
13 彼らが帰ったあと、天使が夢でヨセフに現れて言いました。「起きなさい。子どもとその母を連れて、エジプトに逃げるのです。そして、私が帰れと言うまで、ずっとそこにいなさい。ヘロデがこの子を殺そうとしています。」 14 ヨセフは、マリヤと幼子を連れて、その夜のうちにエジプトへ旅立ちました。 15 そして、ヘロデ大王が死ぬまでそこに住みました。こうして、「わたしは、わたしの子をエジプトから呼び出した」（ホセア11・1）という預言者のことばが実現することになったのです。
16 ヘロデは天文学者たちにだまされたとわかると、怒り狂い、すぐさまベツレヘムに軍兵をやって、町とその近辺に住む二歳以下の男の子を一人残らず殺せ、と命じました。というのは、学者たちが、その星は二年前に現れたと言っていたからです。 17 ヘロデのこの残忍な行為によって、エレミヤの次の預言が実現しました。
18 「ラマから声が聞こえる。
苦しみの叫びと、大きな泣き声が。
ラケルが子どもたちのために泣いている。
だれも彼女を慰めることができない。
子どもたちは死んでしまったのだから。」（エレミヤ31・15）

The Magi Visit the Messiah
2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(A) during the time of King Herod,(B) Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(C) We saw his star(D) when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem(E) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b]”(F)
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(G) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(H) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(I) in a dream(J) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone, an angel(K) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(L) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(M)
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(N) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[c](O)
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(P)
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(Q) weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”[d](R)
The Return to Nazareth
19 After Herod died, an angel(S) of the Lord appeared in a dream(T) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(U)
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(V) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(W) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(X) So was fulfilled(Y) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(Z)
