12 レハブアムがシェケムで即位すると、すべてのイスラエル人が即位を祝うために集まりました。 2-4 ソロモン王を避けてエジプトに逃げていたヤロブアムは、友人たちから計画を聞かされました。彼らはヤロブアムに、即位式に出席するよう勧めたので、彼はシェケムに集まっていたイスラエル人の集団に加わり、レハブアムに要求をつきつける首謀者となりました。ヤロブアムとイスラエル人たちは、レハブアムに言いました。「あなたの父君は、それはひどい主人でした。父君のころより私たちの重労働を軽くし、もっと良い政治をすると約束してください。そうすれば、あなたにお仕えします。」

6 レハブアムは、父ソロモンの相談相手であった長老たちに相談しました。「いったい、どうしたものか。」 7 長老たちは答えました。「国民を喜ばせる答えをなさり、負担を軽くしてやることです。彼らに仕える態度をおとりになれば、あなたはいつまでも彼らの王となられましょう。」
8 ところが、レハブアムはその答えが気に入りませんでした。そこで、自分とともに育った若者たちを呼んで相談したのです。 9 「どうすべきだろう。」 10 すると、若者たちは言いました。「彼らに言ってやればいいのです。『私の父がひどいことをしただと？ それなら、私はもっとひどいことをしよう。 11 父は過酷な取り立てをしたが、私はもっと過酷に取り立てる。父はむちで懲らしめたが、私はさそりを使っておまえたちを痛い目に会わせる』と。」
12 三日後にまたやって来たヤロブアムとイスラエル人たちに、 13-14 新しい王は若者たちが言ったとおり荒々しく答えました。長老たちの助言を無視して、 15 彼らの要求を蹴ったのです。それは、主がそう仕向けたからです。こうなったのは、いつかシロ出身の預言者アヒヤによってヤロブアムに約束されたことが実現するためでした。
16-17 人々は、王が自分たちの意見を聞き入れないのを知ると、大声で言いました。「もう、ダビデ王家に用はない。さあ、国へ帰ろう。レハブアムは自分の部族だけの王になればよいのだ。」イスラエルの民は、レハブアムを王と認めたユダ族を除いて、全員が彼を見限りました。 18 王はユダ族以外からも労働者を集めようと、監督のアドラムを彼らのもとに派遣しましたが、イスラエル人たちはアドラムに石を投げつけ、打ち殺してしまったのです。それでレハブアム王は、戦車に乗り込み、やっとの思いでエルサレムへ逃げ帰りました。 19 こうしてイスラエルは、今に至るまでダビデ王朝に背くことになりました。
20 イスラエルの民は、ヤロブアムがエジプトから戻ったことを知ると、国民集会に彼を呼んで、彼を王にしました。ユダ族（ベニヤミン族も含む）だけは、ダビデ王家に仕えました。
21 レハブアム王はエルサレムに帰ると、ユダとベニヤミンの部族の体格の良い男子を残らず召集し、十八万の特別攻撃隊を編成しました。その兵力でイスラエルの残りの十部族と戦い、力ずくで自分が王であることを認めさせようとしたのです。 22 すると、預言者シェマヤに、次のような神のことばがありました。 23-24 「ユダの王、ソロモンの子レハブアムと、ユダとベニヤミンの全住民とにこう伝えなさい。兄弟であるイスラエルと戦ってはならない。今回の出来事は、わたしの意にかなっているのだから、解散してめいめいの家に帰るように。」彼らは命じられたとおり、家に帰って行きました。
25 一方ヤロブアムは、エフライムの山地にシェケムの町を再建し、そこを首都にしました。のちに、ペヌエルも再建しました。 26 ヤロブアムは考えました。「気をつけなければいけない。民は、ダビデの子孫を王にしたいと考えるかもしれないから。 27 神殿でいけにえをささげるためにエルサレムへ行けば、どうしても、ユダの王レハブアムに親しみを覚えるだろう。そうなれば、私を殺し、彼を王にしないとも限らない。」
28 そこでヤロブアムは、家臣の助言を入れて金の子牛を二つ造り、イスラエルの民に通告しました。「わざわざエルサレムまで礼拝に出かけるのは大変なことだ。これからは、この二つの像を、あなたをエジプトから助け出した神としてあがめなさい。」
29 金の子牛の一つはベテルに、もう一つはダンに置きました。 30 これは偶像礼拝であり、大きな罪でした。 31 ヤロブアムはベテルとダンに礼拝所を建て、祭司階級のレビ族でない者の中から祭司を任命しました。 32-33 それから自分勝手に、仮庵の祭りを毎年十一月の初めにベテルで行うことにしました。これは、エルサレムでの例祭にならったものです。彼自らベテルの子牛像のために祭壇でいけにえをささげ、香をたきました。ヤロブアムはこのベテルで、礼拝所で仕える祭司を任命しました。

Israel Rebels Against Rehoboam(A)
12 Rehoboam went to Shechem,(B) for all Israel had gone there to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was still in Egypt, where he had fled(C) from King Solomon), he returned from[a] Egypt. 3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: 4 “Your father put a heavy yoke(D) on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 Rehoboam answered, “Go away for three days and then come back to me.” So the people went away.
6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders(E) who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
7 They replied, “If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer,(F) they will always be your servants.”
8 But Rehoboam rejected(G) the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. 9 He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “These people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. 11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.” 13 The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders, 14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged(H) you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord,(I) to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah(J) the Shilonite.
16 When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:
“What share(K) do we have in David,
what part in Jesse’s son?
To your tents, Israel!(L)
Look after your own house, David!”
So the Israelites went home.(M) 17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah,(N) Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,[b](O) who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death.(P) King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David(Q) to this day.
20 When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David.(R)
21 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered all Judah and the tribe of Benjamin—a hundred and eighty thousand able young men—to go to war(S) against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam son of Solomon.
22 But this word of God came to Shemaiah(T) the man of God:(U) 23 “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to all Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, 24 ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.’” So they obeyed the word of the Lord and went home again, as the Lord had ordered.
Golden Calves at Bethel and Dan
25 Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem(V) in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built up Peniel.[c](W)
26 Jeroboam thought to himself, “The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David. 27 If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem,(X) they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam.”
28 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves.(Y) He said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”(Z) 29 One he set up in Bethel,(AA) and the other in Dan.(AB) 30 And this thing became a sin;(AC) the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.[d]
31 Jeroboam built shrines(AD) on high places and appointed priests(AE) from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites. 32 He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth(AF) month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel,(AG) sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made. 33 On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel.(AH) So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings.

10 イスラエルの全指導者は、レハブアムの即位を祝おうとシェケムに集まりました。 2-3 一方、ネバテの子ヤロブアムの支援者たちは、使いを出してソロモン王の死をヤロブアムに伝えました。彼はその時、ソロモン王を避けてエジプトに逃げていたのです。急いで帰国したヤロブアムは、即位式に出席して、人々の要求をレハブアムに突きつけました。 4 「お父上は過酷な労働を強いていました。どうか、お父上が私たちに負わせた重い苦役を軽くしてください。そうすれば、あなたを王として受け入れます。」

12 ヤロブアムと民は、三日後、返事を聞きに戻って来ました。 13 レハブアムは荒々しい口調で答えました。長老たちの助言を退け、 14 若者たちの言いなりになったからです。
「父はおまえたちに重い苦役を負わせたが、私はもっと重くしてやろう。父は鞭でおまえたちを懲らしめたが、私はさそりで懲らしめてやる。」
15 こうして王は、人々の願いを聞き入れませんでした。こうなったのは、シロ人アヒヤによってヤロブアムに告げられた預言が実現するよう、神が仕向けていたからです。
16 これを聞いたイスラエルの民は、王を見限りました。彼らは腹立ちまぎれに、「ダビデの家もこれまでだ。だれかほかの人を王にしよう。レハブアムはユダの部族だけ治めればいい。さあ、帰ろう」と言いながら、帰って行きました。
17 ユダ族はレハブアムに忠誠を誓いました。 18 そののちレハブアムは、イスラエルの他の部族から労働者を集めようとしてハドラムを遣わしましたが、人々は石を投げつけて彼を殺しました。この知らせを受けた王は、戦車に飛び乗ってエルサレムに逃げ帰りました。 19 このようにイスラエルは、今日も、ダビデの家に治められることを堅く拒んでいるのです。

11 エルサレムに戻ったレハブアムは、ユダとベニヤミンのえり抜きの勇士十八万人を召集し、王国の再統一を目指して、他のイスラエルの諸部族に戦いを挑もうとしました。 2 その時、主は預言者シェマヤに命じました。 3 「行って、ソロモンの子であるユダの王レハブアムと、ユダとベニヤミンの人々に伝えよ。 4 『主はこう言われる。兄弟と戦ってはならない。みな家へ帰れ。彼らの反逆はわたしが仕向けたものだ。』」人々は、この主のことばを聞いて、ヤロブアムと戦うことをやめました。

18 レハブアムは、親族のマハラテを妻にめとりました。彼女は、ダビデの子エリモテと、ダビデの兄弟エリアブの娘アビハイルとの間にできた娘です。 19 この結婚によって、エウシュ、シェマルヤ、ザハムの三人の息子が生まれました。

11 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem,(A) he mustered Judah and Benjamin—a hundred and eighty thousand able young men—to go to war against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam.
2 But this word of the Lord came to Shemaiah(B) the man of God: 3 “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, 4 ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your fellow Israelites.(C) Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.’” So they obeyed the words of the Lord and turned back from marching against Jeroboam.
Rehoboam Fortifies Judah
5 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and built up towns for defense in Judah: 6 Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, 7 Beth Zur, Soko, Adullam, 8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, 9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, 10 Zorah, Aijalon and Hebron. These were fortified cities(D) in Judah and Benjamin. 11 He strengthened their defenses and put commanders in them, with supplies of food, olive oil and wine. 12 He put shields and spears in all the cities, and made them very strong. So Judah and Benjamin were his.
13 The priests and Levites from all their districts throughout Israel sided with him. 14 The Levites(E) even abandoned their pasturelands and property(F) and came to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons had rejected them as priests of the Lord 15 when he appointed(G) his own priests(H) for the high places and for the goat(I) and calf(J) idols he had made. 16 Those from every tribe of Israel(K) who set their hearts on seeking the Lord, the God of Israel, followed the Levites to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices to the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 17 They strengthened(L) the kingdom of Judah and supported Rehoboam son of Solomon three years, following the ways of David and Solomon during this time.
Rehoboam’s Family
18 Rehoboam married Mahalath, who was the daughter of David’s son Jerimoth and of Abihail, the daughter of Jesse’s son Eliab. 19 She bore him sons: Jeush, Shemariah and Zaham. 20 Then he married Maakah(M) daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah,(N) Attai, Ziza and Shelomith. 21 Rehoboam loved Maakah daughter of Absalom more than any of his other wives and concubines. In all, he had eighteen wives(O) and sixty concubines, twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.
22 Rehoboam appointed Abijah(P) son of Maakah as crown prince among his brothers, in order to make him king. 23 He acted wisely, dispersing some of his sons throughout the districts of Judah and Benjamin, and to all the fortified cities. He gave them abundant provisions(Q) and took many wives for them.

キリストを見ならいなさい
2 あなたがたには、クリスチャンとして互いに励まし合う気持ちがありますか。私を助けたいと思うほどの愛がありますか。あなたがたは同じ御霊を共にいただいており、主にあって互いが兄弟であるということの、ほんとうの意味がわかっているでしょうか。やさしい心と思いやりが、少しでもあるでしょうか。 2 もしそうなら、互いに愛し合い、心から打ち解け合い、思いと目的とを一つにして共に働き、私を心から喜ばせてください。 3 自己中心であったり、見栄を張ったりしてはいけません。謙遜になって、他の人を自分よりもすぐれた者と考えなさい。 4 自分のことばかりにとらわれるのではなく、他の人のことにも目を向けなさい。
5 私たちに対するキリスト・イエスの態度を見ならいなさい。 6 キリストは神であられるのに、神としての権利を要求したり、それに執着したりはなさいませんでした。 7 かえって、その偉大な力と栄光を捨てて奴隷の姿をとり、人間と同じになられました。 8 そればかりか、さらに自分を低くし、犯罪人と同じようになって十字架上で死なれたのです。 9 しかし、それゆえに、神はキリストを高く天に引き上げ、最高の名をお与えになりました。 10 それは、その御名のもとに、すべてのものが天でも地でもひざまずき、 11 すべての口が「イエス・キリストは主です」と告白して、父なる神がほめたたえられるためです。
12 愛する皆さん。私がそちらにいた時、あなたがたはいつも、私の教えに従順に従ってくれました。離れている今はなおさら、しっかりしてください。深い尊敬の思いをこめて神に従い、神に喜ばれないことからは手を引きなさい。 13 神は人の心に働きかけて、従おうとする思いを起こさせ、神が望まれる行いができるように助けてくださるのです。 14 何事においても、不平を言ったり、疑ったりしてはいけません。 15-16 だれからも非難されないためです。心の曲がった邪悪な世の中にあって、あなたがたは神の子どもとして、汚れのない、きよらかな生活を送りなさい。世の人々の間で、いのちのことばを高く掲げ、世の光として輝きなさい。そうすれば、キリストが帰って来られた時、私はあなたがたに対する労苦がむだでなかったことを知り、どんなに喜ぶことでしょう。 17 あなたがたの信仰を供え物として神にささげる時、その上に、たとえ私の血を注がなければならないとしても――あなたがたのために、いのちを捨てなければならないとしても――私はうれしいのです。そして、あなたがた一人一人にも、この喜びを分けてあげたいのです。 18 このことは、当然、あなたがたにとっても喜びなのですから。私があなたがたのためにいのちを捨てる特権を持っていることを、共に喜んでください。

19 主のお許しがありしだい、テモテをそちらへ送りたいと思っています。そうなれば、彼から、あなたがたのことやそちらの様子を報告してもらい、私も元気づけられると期待しています。 20 テモテほど親身になって、あなたがたのことを心配している人はいません。 21 ほかの人はみな、自分の計画に心を奪われ、キリスト・イエスのことなど気にかけていないようです。 22 しかし、テモテは違います。よくご存じのとおり、まるで私の息子のように、福音の働きを助けてくれました。 23 それで、ここでの私の扱いがどうなるかわかりしだい、テモテを行かせるつもりです。 24 私も、近いうちに主がそちらを訪ねさせてくださると確信しています。

Imitating Christ’s Humility
2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit,(A) if any tenderness and compassion,(B) 2 then make my joy complete(C) by being like-minded,(D) having the same love, being one(E) in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.(F) Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,(G) 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.(H)
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:(I)
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,(J)
did not consider equality with God(K) something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing(L)
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,(M)
being made in human likeness.(N)
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death(O)—
even death on a cross!(P)
9 Therefore God exalted him(Q) to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,(R)
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,(S)
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,(T)
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,(U)
to the glory of God the Father.
Do Everything Without Grumbling
12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,(V) 13 for it is God who works in you(W) to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.(X)
14 Do everything without grumbling(Y) or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless(Z) and pure, “children of God(AA) without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”[c](AB) Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ(AC) that I did not run(AD) or labor in vain.(AE) 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering(AF) on the sacrifice(AG) and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.(AH) 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.
Timothy and Epaphroditus
19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy(AI) to you soon,(AJ) that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. 20 I have no one else like him,(AK) who will show genuine concern for your welfare. 21 For everyone looks out for their own interests,(AL) not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father(AM) he has served with me in the work of the gospel. 23 I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.(AN) 24 And I am confident(AO) in the Lord that I myself will come soon.
25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker(AP) and fellow soldier,(AQ) who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.(AR) 26 For he longs for all of you(AS) and is distressed because you heard he was ill. 27 Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him,(AT) so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. 29 So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him,(AU) 30 because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me.(AV)
