A False Proverb Refuted

18 The word of the Lord came to me again, saying, “What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying:

The One Who Sins Will Die

18 The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel:

“‘The parents eat sour grapes,

25 “Yet you say, (A)‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ Hear now, O house of Israel, is it not My way which is fair, and your ways which are not fair? 26 (B)When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity, and dies in it, it is because of the iniquity which he has done that he dies. 27 Again, (C)when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness which he committed, and does what is lawful and right, he preserves himself alive. 28 Because he (D)considers and turns away from all the transgressions which he committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 29 (E)Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ O house of Israel, is it not My ways which are fair, and your ways which are not fair?

(G)“Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin. 31 (H)Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed, and get yourselves a (I)new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O house of Israel? 32 For (J)I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies,” says the Lord God. “Therefore turn and (K)live!”

25 “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’(A) Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust?(B) Is it not your ways that are unjust? 26 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die. 27 But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life.(C) 28 Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die.(D) 29 Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?

30 “Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent!(E) Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.(F) 31 Rid(G) yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart(H) and a new spirit. Why(I) will you die, people of Israel?(J) 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent(K) and live!(L)
