Psalm 98

A psalm.

¹Sing to the Lord^(A) a new song,^(B)
    for he has done marvelous things;^(C)
his right hand^(D) and his holy arm^(E)
    have worked salvation^(F) for him.
²The Lord has made his salvation known^(G)
    and revealed his righteousness^(H) to the nations.^(I)
³He has remembered^(J) his love
    and his faithfulness to Israel;
all the ends of the earth^(K) have seen
    the salvation of our God.^(L)

⁴Shout for joy^(M) to the Lord, all the earth,
burst into jubilant song with music;
⁵make music to the Lord with the harp,^(N)
with the harp and the sound of singing,^(O)

1 John 2:22-29

New International Version

²²Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.^(A) ²³No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.^(B)

²⁴As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning^(C) remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.^(D) ²⁵And this is what he promised us—eternal life.^(E)

²⁶I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.^(F) ²⁷As for you, the anointing^(G) you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things^(H) and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.^(I)

God’s Children and Sin

²⁸And now, dear children,^(J) continue in him, so that when he appears^(K) we may be confident^(L) and unashamed before him at his coming.^(M)

²⁹If you know that he is righteous,^(N) you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.^(O)

John 1:19-28

New International Version

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

¹⁹Now this was John’s^(A) testimony when the Jewish leaders^[a]^(B) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. ²⁰He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”^(C)

²¹They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”^(D)

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”^(E)

He answered, “No.”

²²Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

²³John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,^(F) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”^[b]^(G)

²⁴Now the Pharisees who had been sent ²⁵questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

²⁶“I baptize with^[c] water,”^(H) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. ²⁷He is the one who comes after me,^(I) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”^(J)

²⁸This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,^(K) where John was baptizing.
