The Exalted Servant

¹³Behold, My ^(A)Servant will prosper,
He will be high and lifted up and ^[a]greatly ^(B)exalted.
¹⁴Just as many were appalled at you, My people,
So His ^(C)appearance was marred beyond that of a man,
And His form beyond the sons of mankind.
¹⁵So ^[b]He will ^(D)sprinkle many nations,
Kings will ^(E)shut their mouths on account of Him;
For ^(F)what they had not been told, they will see,
And what they had not heard, they will understand.

53 ^(A)Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
²For He grew up before Him like a ^(B)tender ^[a]shoot,
And like a root out of dry ground;
He has ^(C)no stately form or majesty
That we would look at Him,
Nor an appearance that we would take pleasure in Him.
³He was ^(D)despised and abandoned by men,
A man of ^[b]great pain and ^(E)familiar with sickness;
And like one from whom people hide their faces,
He was ^(F)despised, and we had no ^(G)regard for Him.

⁴However, it was our sicknesses that He Himself ^(H)bore,
And our pains that He carried;
Yet we ourselves assumed that He had been afflicted,
Struck down by ^(I)God, and humiliated.
⁵But He was ^[c]pierced for ^(J)our offenses,
He was crushed for ^(K)our wrongdoings;
The ^(L)punishment for our ^[d]well-being was laid upon Him,
And by ^(M)His wounds we are healed.
⁶All of us, like sheep, have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the wrongdoing of us all
To ^[e]fall on Him.

⁷He was oppressed and afflicted,
Yet He did not ^(N)open His mouth;
^(O)Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
⁸By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off from the land of the ^[f]living
^(P)For the wrongdoing of my people, to whom the blow was due?
⁹And His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a ^(Q)rich man in His death,
^(R)Because He had ^(S)done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.

¹⁰But the Lord desired
To ^(T)crush Him, ^[g]^(U)causing Him grief;
If He renders ^[h]Himself as a guilt ^(V)offering,
He will see ^(W)His ^[i]offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the ^[j]good ^(X)pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
¹¹As a result of the ^[k]anguish of His soul,
He will ^[l]^(Y)see it and be satisfied;
By His ^(Z)knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
For He will ^(AA)bear their wrongdoings.
¹²Therefore, I will allot Him a ^(AB)portion with the great,
And He will divide the plunder with the strong,
Because He poured out His ^[m]^(AC)life unto death,
And was ^(AD)counted with wrongdoers;
Yet He Himself ^(AE)bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the wrongdoers.

3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named ^(A)Nicodemus, a ^(B)ruler of the Jews; ²this man came to ^[a]Jesus at night and said to Him, “^(C)Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these ^[b]^(D)signs that You do unless ^(E)God is with him.” ³Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone ^(F)is born ^[c]again he cannot see ^(G)the kingdom of God.”

⁴Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a person be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?” ⁵Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of ^(H)water and the Spirit, he cannot enter ^(I)the kingdom of God. ⁶^(J)That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born ^[d]again.’ ⁸^(K)The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

⁹Nicodemus responded and said to Him, “How can these things be?” ¹⁰Jesus answered and said to him, “You are ^(L)the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? ¹¹Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(M)we speak of what we know and ^(N)testify of what we have seen, and ^(O)you people do not accept our testimony. ¹²If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? ¹³^(P)No one has ascended into heaven, except ^(Q)He who descended from heaven: ^(R)the Son of Man. ¹⁴And just as ^(S)Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must ^(T)the Son of Man ^(U)be lifted up, ¹⁵so that everyone who ^[e]believes will ^(V)have eternal life in Him.

¹⁶“For God so ^(W)loved the world, that He ^(X)gave His ^(Y)only Son, so that everyone who ^(Z)believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁷For God ^(AA)did not send the Son into the world ^(AB)to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. ¹⁸^(AC)The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of ^(AD)the only Son of God.

¹⁵But ^[h]the gracious gift is not like the offense. For if by the offense of ^(P)the one ^(Q)the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by ^(R)the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. ¹⁶The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand ^(S)the judgment arose from one offense, ^[i]resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the gracious gift arose from many offenses, ^[j]resulting in justification. ¹⁷For if by the offense of the one, death reigned ^(T)through the one, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness ^(U)reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

¹⁸So then, as through ^(V)one offense ^[k]the result was condemnation to all mankind, so also through one ^(W)act of righteousness ^[l]the result was ^(X)justification of life to all mankind. ¹⁹For as through the one man’s disobedience ^(Y)the many ^(Z)were made sinners, so also through ^(AA)the obedience of the One ^(AB)the many will be made righteous. ²⁰^[m]^(AC)The Law came in so that the offense would increase; but where sin increased, ^(AD)grace abounded all the more, ²¹so that, as ^(AE)sin reigned in death, so also ^(AF)grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
