(A)Jesus withdrew to the sea with His disciples; and (B)a large multitude from Galilee followed, and also from Judea, and from Jerusalem, and from (C)Idumea, and beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of (D)Tyre and Sidon, a great number of people heard about everything that He was doing and came to Him. (E)And He told His disciples to see that a boat would be ready for Him because of the [a]masses, so that they would not crowd Him; 10 for He had (F)healed many, with the result that all those who had (G)diseases pushed in around Him in order to (H)touch Him. 11 And whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, “You are (I)the Son of God!” 12 And He (J)strongly warned them not to [b]reveal who He was.

The Twelve Are Chosen

13 And He *went up on (K)the mountain and *(L)summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. 14 And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, 15 and to have authority to cast out the demons. 16 And He appointed the twelve: (M)Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), 17 [c]James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of [d]James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, “Sons of Thunder”); 18 and Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, [e]James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, and Simon the [f]Zealot; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.

Care of the Body of Jesus

31 Now then, since it was (A)the day of preparation, to prevent (B)the bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath ([a]for that Sabbath was a (C)high day), the Jews requested of Pilate that their legs be broken, and the bodies be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who was (D)crucified with Him; 33 but after they came to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 Yet one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (E)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has (F)testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place (G)so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “(H)Not a bone of Him shall be [b]broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “(I)They will look at Him whom they pierced.”

20 Therefore when you come together it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper, 21 for when you eat, each one takes his own supper first; and one goes hungry while (A)another gets drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the (B)church of God and (C)shame those who have nothing? What am I to say to you? Shall (D)I praise you? In this I do not praise you.

The Lord’s Supper

23 For (E)I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that (F)the Lord Jesus, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He also took (G)the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the (H)new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death (I)until He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy way, shall be (J)guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a person must (K)examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For the one who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not properly recognize the [a]body. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number [b](L)are asleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are (M)disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with (N)the world.

33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is (O)hungry, have him eat (P)at home, so that you do not come together for judgment. As to the remaining matters, I will (Q)give instructions (R)when I come.

(A)And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound them.

The first sounded, and there was (B)hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled to the earth; and (C)a third of the earth was burned up, and (D)a third of the (E)trees were burned up, and all the green (F)grass was burned up.

The second angel sounded, and something like a great (G)mountain burning with fire was hurled into the sea; and (H)a third of the (I)sea became blood, and (J)a third of the creatures which were in the sea [a]and had life, died; and a third of the (K)ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded, and a great star (L)fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a (M)third of the rivers and on the (N)springs of waters. 11 The star is named Wormwood; and a (O)third of the waters became (P)wormwood, and many people died from the waters because they were made bitter.

12 The fourth angel sounded, and a (Q)third of the (R)sun, a third of the (S)moon, and a (T)third of the (U)stars were struck, so that a (V)third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a (W)third of it, and the night in the same way.

13 Then I looked, and I heard [b]an eagle flying in (X)midheaven, saying with a loud voice, “(Y)Woe, woe, woe to (Z)those who live on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the (AA)three angels who are about to sound!”

The Fifth Trumpet: Shaft of the Abyss

Then the (AB)fifth angel sounded, and I saw a (AC)star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the (AD)key to the (AE)shaft of the abyss was given to him. He opened the shaft of the abyss, and (AF)smoke ascended out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace; and (AG)the sun and the air were darkened from the smoke of the shaft. Then out of the smoke came (AH)locusts [c]upon the earth, and power was given them, as the (AI)scorpions of the earth have power. They were told not to (AJ)hurt the (AK)grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the (AL)seal of God on their foreheads. And [d]they were not permitted to kill [e]anyone, but to torment for (AM)five months; and their torment was like the torment of a (AN)scorpion when it [f]stings a person. And in those days (AO)people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death [g]will flee from them!

The [h](AP)appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like human faces. They had hair like the hair of women, and their (AQ)teeth were like the teeth of lions. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the (AR)sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. 10 They have tails like (AS)scorpions, and stings; and in their (AT)tails is their power to hurt people for (AU)five months. 11 They have as king over them, the angel of the (AV)abyss; his name in (AW)Hebrew is [i](AX)Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name [j]Apollyon.

12 (AY)The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.

The Bowls of Wrath

16 Then I heard a loud voice from (A)the [a]temple, saying to the (B)seven angels, “Go and (C)pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”

So the first angel went and poured out his bowl (D)on the earth; and a harmful and painful (E)sore [b]afflicted the people (F)who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

The second angel poured out his bowl (G)into the sea, and it became blood like that of a dead man; and every living [c]thing in the sea died.

Then the third angel poured out his bowl into the (H)rivers and the springs of waters; and they (I)became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters saying, “(J)Righteous are You, (K)the One who is and who was, O (L)Holy One, because You (M)judged these things; for they poured out (N)the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them (O)blood to drink. They [d]deserve it.” And I heard (P)the altar saying, “Yes, (Q)Lord God, the Almighty, (R)true and righteous are Your judgments.”

And the fourth angel poured out his bowl upon (S)the sun, (T)and it was given power to scorch people with fire. And the people were scorched with [e]fierce heat; and they (U)blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they (V)did not repent so as to (W)give Him glory.

10 And the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the (X)throne of the beast, and his kingdom became (Y)darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain, 11 and they (Z)blasphemed the (AA)God of heaven because of their pain and their (AB)sores; and they (AC)did not repent of their deeds.

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the (AD)great river, the Euphrates; and (AE)its water was dried up, so that (AF)the way would be prepared for the kings (AG)from the [f]east.

Har-Magedon (Armageddon)

13 And I saw coming out of the mouth of the (AH)dragon, and out of the mouth of the (AI)beast, and out of the mouth of the (AJ)false prophet, three (AK)unclean spirits like (AL)frogs; 14 for they are (AM)spirits of demons, (AN)performing signs, which go out to the kings of the (AO)entire [g]world, to (AP)gather them together for the war of the (AQ)great day of God, the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, (AR)I am coming like a thief. (AS)Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, (AT)so that he will not walk about naked and people will not see his shame.”) 16 And they (AU)gathered them together to the place which (AV)in Hebrew is called (AW)Har-Magedon.

The Seventh Bowl of Wrath

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon (AX)the air, and a (AY)loud voice came out of the [h](AZ)temple from the throne, saying, “(BA)It is done.” 18 And there were flashes of (BB)lightning and sounds and peals of thunder; and there was (BC)a great earthquake, (BD)such as there had not been since mankind came to be upon the earth, so great an earthquake was it, and so mighty. 19 (BE)The great city [i]was split into three parts, and the cities of the [j]nations fell. (BF)Babylon the great was (BG)remembered in the sight of God, to give her (BH)the cup of the wine of [k]His fierce wrath. 20 And (BI)every island fled, and no mountains were found. 21 And (BJ)huge [l]hailstones, weighing about [m]a talent each, *came down from heaven upon people; and people (BK)blasphemed God because of the (BL)plague of the hail, because [n]the hailstone plague *was extremely [o]severe.
