1 约书亚死后，以色列人求问耶和华说：“谁要为我们首先去攻打迦南人，与他们作战呢？” 2 耶和华回答：“犹大要先上去，看哪，我已经把那地交在他手中。” 3 犹大对自己的兄弟西缅说：“请你与我一同上我抽签所得的地业去，我们好与迦南人交战；以后我也与你一同到你抽签所得的地业去。”于是西缅与他一同去了。 4 犹大上去了；耶和华就把迦南人和比利洗人交在他们手中；他们在比色击杀了一万人。 5 他们在那里遇见了比色王，就与他交战，击杀了迦南人和比利洗人。 6 比色王逃跑；他们追赶他，把他捉住，砍去了他手脚的大拇指。 7 比色王说：“从前有七十个王，手脚的大拇指都被我砍去，在我的桌子底下拾取食物；现在 神照着我所行的，报应我了。”于是他们把他带到耶路撒冷，后来他就死在那里。

27 玛拿西没有赶走伯．善和属于伯．善的乡村的居民，他纳和属于他纳的乡村的居民，多珥和属于多珥的乡村的居民，以伯莲和属于以伯莲的乡村的居民，米吉多和属于米吉多的乡村的居民；迦南人决意住在那地。 28 到以色列强盛了，就迫使迦南人作苦工，但没有把他们完全赶走。
29 以法莲也没有把住在基色的迦南人赶走，于是迦南人还住在基色，在以法莲中间。

耶和华的使者在波金显现
2 耶和华的使者从吉甲上到波金来，说：“我曾经把你们从埃及领上来，带你们到我向你们列祖起誓应许的地方；我曾说过：‘我永不废弃我与你们所立的约； 2 你们不可与这地的居民立约，要拆毁他们的祭坛。’你们竟没有听从我的话；你们作的是甚么呢？ 3 因此我又说：‘我必不把他们从你们面前赶走，他们要作你们的敌人（按照《马索拉文本》，“敌人”作“边旁”，意思不明确，或译：“网罗”；现参照各古译本翻译），他们的神要作你们的网罗。’” 4 耶和华的使者对以色列众人说这些话的时候，众人就放声大哭。 5 于是给那地方起名叫波金；他们在那里向耶和华献祭。
约书亚逝世
6 约书亚遣散了众人，以色列人就各归自己承受的地业，要占有那地。 7 约书亚在世的时候，以及他去世以后，那些见过耶和华为以色列人所行的大事的众长老还在的日子，众人都事奉耶和华。 8 耶和华的仆人，嫩的儿子约书亚，在一百一十岁的时候就死了。 9 以色列人把他埋葬在他地业的境内，就是以法莲山地，在迦实山北面的亭拿．希烈。 10 那一代的人都归到他们的列祖那里以后，有另一代的人兴起来了；他们不认识耶和华，也不知道耶和华为以色列人所行的事。
以色列人违背 神的恶果
11 以色列人行了耶和华看为恶的事，去事奉众巴力； 12 他们离弃了领他们出埃及的耶和华、他们列祖的 神，去跟从别的神，就是他们周围各族的神，敬拜他们，惹耶和华发怒。 13 他们离弃了耶和华，去事奉巴力和亚斯他录。 14 耶和华的怒气向以色列人发作，就把他们交在抢掠的人手中，他们就抢掠他们；他又把他们完全交在他们四围的仇敌手中，以致他们在仇敌面前再不能站立得住。 15 他们无论去哪里，耶和华的手总是加害他们，好象耶和华说过的，又像耶和华对他们起誓过的；他们就非常困苦。 16 耶和华兴起了士师，士师就拯救他们脱离抢掠他们的人的手。 17 但他们连士师也不听从，竟与别的神行了奸淫，敬拜他们；他们迅速偏离了他们列祖所行、听从耶和华命令的道路，他们没有照样行。 18 耶和华为他们兴起士师的时候，耶和华就与那士师同在；那士师在世的日子，耶和华总是拯救他们脱离仇敌的手；因为他们在压迫和苦害他们的人底下发出哀声，耶和华就怜悯他们。 19 可是士师死了以后，他们就转而行恶，比他们的列祖更厉害，去随从别的神，事奉和敬拜他们，总不放弃他们的恶行和顽梗的行径。 20 于是耶和华的怒气向以色列人发作，说：“因为这国的人违背我吩咐他们列祖的约，不听从我的话， 21 因此，约书亚死后仍剩下来的列国，我也不再从他们面前赶走， 22 为要借着他们试验以色列人，看他们肯不肯谨守遵行耶和华的道路，像他们的列祖一样谨守。” 23 这样，耶和华留下这些国的民，不迅速把他们赶走，也不把他们交在约书亚手里。

24 以笏出来以后，王的仆人才来到；他们看见凉楼上的门锁着，就说：“王一定是在凉楼上大解。” 25 他们等到发慌了，见他还不打开凉楼的门，就拿钥匙来开；不料，看见他们的主人早已倒在地上死了。
26 他们耽延的时候，以笏已经逃跑了；他经过众雕像那里，逃到西伊拉去。 27 他去到以后，就在以法莲山地吹角；以色列人与他一同从山地上下来，他走在他们前头， 28 对他们说：“你们跟随我，因为耶和华已经把你们的仇敌摩押人交在你们手中。”他们就跟随他下去，攻取约旦河的渡口，拦截摩押人，不让一个过去。 29 那时他们击杀了约有一万摩押人，都是强壮的、勇猛的人，没有一人逃脱。 30 这样，从那天起，摩押就在以色列人的手下被制伏了，于是国中太平了八十年。

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
2 And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
4 And Judah went up; and the Lord delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
5 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
7 And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
8 Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:
12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?
15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
18 Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.
19 And the Lord was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.
21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the Lord was with them.
23 And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)
24 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.
25 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.
27 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:
32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.
33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.
34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:
35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.
36 And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
2 And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the Lord spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the Lord.
6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.
8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.
10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:
12 And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger.
13 And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.
14 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.
16 Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.
17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so.
18 And when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the Lord because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.
19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.
20 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;
21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:
22 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the Lord to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
23 Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
3 Now these are the nations which the Lord left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
3 Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.
4 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:
6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgat the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
8 Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.
9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
10 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the Lord delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.
11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
12 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.
13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.
16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.
17 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.
18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
19 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:
22 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.
23 Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
24 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.
27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
28 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the Lord hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
29 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

11 (N)From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. (The name of Debir was formerly Kirjath Sepher.)
12 (O)Then Caleb said, “Whoever attacks Kirjath Sepher and takes it, to him I will give my daughter Achsah as wife.” 13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, (P)Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah as wife. 14 (Q)Now it happened, when she came to him, that [c]she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you wish?” 15 So she said to him, (R)“Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water.”
And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
16 (S)Now the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up (T)from the City of Palms with the children of Judah into the Wilderness of Judah, which lies in the South near (U)Arad; (V)and they went and dwelt among the people. 17 (W)And Judah went with his brother Simeon, and they attacked the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called (X)Hormah. 18 Also Judah took (Y)Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. 19 So the Lord was with Judah. And they drove out the mountaineers, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the lowland, because they had (Z)chariots of iron. 20 (AA)And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said. Then he [d]expelled from there the (AB)three sons of Anak. 21 (AC)But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
22 And the [e]house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, (AD)and the Lord was with them. 23 So the [f]house of Joseph (AE)sent men to spy out Bethel. (The name of the city was formerly (AF)Luz.) 24 And when the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, “Please show us the entrance to the city, and (AG)we will show you mercy.” 25 So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and all his family go. 26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.
Incomplete Conquest of the Land
27 (AH)However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or (AI)Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of (AJ)Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites [g]under tribute, but did not completely drive them out.
29 (AK)Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
30 Nor did (AL)Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and [h]were put under tribute.
31 (AM)Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob. 32 So the Asherites (AN)dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.
33 (AO)Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them.
34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountains, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley; 35 and the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, (AP)in Aijalon, and in [i]Shaalbim; yet when the strength of the house of Joseph became greater, they [j]were put under tribute.
36 Now the boundary of the Amorites was (AQ)from the Ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela, and upward.
Israel’s Disobedience
2 Then the Angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: (AR)“I led you up from Egypt and (AS)brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and (AT)I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you. 2 And (AU)you shall make no [k]covenant with the inhabitants of this land; (AV)you shall tear down their altars.’ (AW)But you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this? 3 Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be (AX)thorns[l] in your side, and (AY)their gods shall [m]be a (AZ)snare to you.’ ” 4 So it was, when the Angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept.
5 Then they called the name of that place [n]Bochim; and they sacrificed there to the Lord. 6 And when (BA)Joshua had dismissed the people, the children of Israel went each to his own inheritance to possess the land.
Death of Joshua(BB)
7 (BC)So the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He had done for Israel. 8 Now (BD)Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died when he was one hundred and ten years old. 9 (BE)And they buried him within the border of his inheritance at (BF)Timnath Heres, in the mountains of Ephraim, on the north side of Mount Gaash. 10 When all that generation had [o]been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who (BG)did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.
Israel’s Unfaithfulness
11 Then the children of Israel did (BH)evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; 12 and they (BI)forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed (BJ)other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they (BK)bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They forsook the Lord (BL)and served [p]Baal and the [q]Ashtoreths. 14 (BM)And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel. So He (BN)delivered them into the hands of plunderers who despoiled them; and (BO)He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they (BP)could no longer stand before their enemies. 15 Wherever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for calamity, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had (BQ)sworn to them. And they were greatly distressed.
16 Nevertheless, (BR)the Lord raised up judges who delivered them out of the hand of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges, but they (BS)played the harlot with other gods, and bowed down to them. They turned quickly from the way in which their fathers walked, in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do so. 18 And when the Lord raised up judges for them, (BT)the Lord was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; (BU)for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed them and harassed them. 19 And it came to pass, (BV)when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow down to them. They did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn way.
20 Then the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and He said, “Because this nation has (BW)transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not heeded My voice, 21 I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua (BX)left when he died, 22 so (BY)that through them I may (BZ)test Israel, whether they will keep the ways of the Lord, to walk in them as their fathers kept them, or not.” 23 Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out immediately; nor did He deliver them into the hand of Joshua.
The Nations Remaining in the Land
3 Now these are (CA)the nations which the Lord left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not [r]known any of the wars in Canaan 2 (this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it), 3 namely, (CB)five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. 4 And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to [s]know whether they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
5 (CC)Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6 And (CD)they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods.
Othniel
7 So the children of Israel did (CE)evil in the sight of the Lord. They (CF)forgot the Lord their God, and served the Baals and [t]Asherahs. 8 Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and He (CG)sold them into the hand of (CH)Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years. 9 When the children of Israel (CI)cried out to the Lord, the Lord (CJ)raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: (CK)Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 (CL)The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. 11 So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
Ehud
12 (CM)And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened (CN)Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord. 13 Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and (CO)Amalek, went and [u]defeated Israel, and took possession of (CP)the City of Palms. 14 So the children of Israel (CQ)served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.
15 But when the children of Israel (CR)cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a (CS)left-handed man. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud made himself a dagger (it was double-edged and a cubit in length) and fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh. 17 So he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. (Now Eglon was a very fat man.) 18 And when he had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who had carried the tribute. 19 But he himself turned back (CT)from the [v]stone images that were at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.”
He said, “Keep silence!” And all who attended him went out from him.
20 So Ehud came to him (now he was sitting upstairs in his cool private chamber). Then Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” So he arose from his seat. 21 Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. 22 Even the [w]hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the dagger out of his belly; and his entrails came out. 23 Then Ehud went out through the porch and shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.
24 When he had gone out, [x]Eglon’s servants came to look, and to their surprise, the doors of the upper room were locked. So they said, “He is probably (CU)attending[y] to his needs in the cool chamber.” 25 So they waited till they were (CV)embarrassed, and still he had not opened the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them. And there was their master, fallen dead on the floor.
26 But Ehud had escaped while they delayed, and passed beyond the [z]stone images and escaped to Seirah. 27 And it happened, when he arrived, that (CW)he blew the trumpet in the (CX)mountains of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountains; and [aa]he led them. 28 Then he said to them, “Follow me, for (CY)the Lord has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him, seized the (CZ)fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over. 29 And at that time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, all stout men of valor; not a man escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And (DA)the land had rest for eighty years.
