10 Halljátok meg a szót, a mit az Úr szól néktek, Izráel háza!
2 Ezt mondja az Úr: A pogányok útját el ne tanuljátok, és az égi jelektõl ne féljetek, mert a pogányok félnek azoktól!
3 Mert a népek bálványai [csupa] hiábavalóság, hiszen az erdõ fájából vágják azt; ács-mester kezei készítik bárddal.
4 Ezüsttel és aranynyal megékesíti azt, szegekkel és põrölyökkel megerõsítik, hogy le ne essék.
5 Olyanok, mint az egyenes pálmafa, és nem beszélnek; viszik-hordják õket, mert mozdulni nem tudnak. Ne féljetek tõlök, mert nem tehetnek rosszat; de jót tenni se képesek!
6 Nincs hozzád hasonló, Uram! Nagy vagy és nagy a te neved a [te] hatalmadért!
7 Ki ne félne tõled, nemzetek királya? Bizony tiéd a tisztelet, mert a nemzetek minden bölcse közt és azok minden országában sincs hozzád hasonló!
8 Mind egyig balgatagok és bolondok; hiábavalóságokra tanít; fa az.
9 Társisból hozott lapított ezüst és Ofirból való arany; az ácsnak és az ötvös kezének munkája; öltözetök kék és piros bíbor; mesterek munkája valahány.
10 De az Úr igaz Isten, élõ Isten õ, és örökkévaló király; az õ haragja elõtt reszket a föld, és a nemzetek nem szenvedhetik el az õ felindulását.
11 (Mondjátok meg hát nékik: Az istenek, a kik az eget és földet nem alkották, el fognak veszni e földrõl és az ég alól!)
12 Õ teremtette a földet az õ erejével, õ alkotta a világot az õ bölcseségével, és õ terjesztette ki az egeket az õ értelmével.
13 Szavára víz-zúgás [támad] az égben, és felhõk emelkednek fel a föld határairól; villámlásokat készít az esõnek, és kihozza a szelet az õ rejtekhelyébõl.
14 Minden ember bolonddá lett, tudomány nélkül, minden ötvös megszégyenül az õ öntött képével, mert hazugság az õ öntése, és nincsen azokban lélek.
15 Hiábavalók azok, nevetségre való munka, elvesznek az õ megfenyíttetésök idején!
16 Nem ilyen a Jákób része, mint ezek; mert a mindenség alkotója õ, és Izráel az õ örökségének pálczája; Seregek Ura az õ neve!
17 Gyûjtsd össze a földrõl a te árúidat, a ki erõsített városban lakozol!
18 Mert ezt mondja az Úr: Ímé, én elvetem ezúttal e föld lakosait, és megsanyargatom õket, hogy megtaláljanak.
19 Jaj nékem az én romlásom miatt, gyógyíthatatlan az én sebem! De azt mondom [mégis:] Bizony ilyen az én vereségem, és szenvedem azt!
20 Sátorom elpusztíttatott, köteleim mind elszakadoztak, fiaim elszakadtak tõlem és oda vannak õk; nincs többé, a ki kifeszítse sátoromat, és felvonja kárpitjaimat!
21 Mert oktalanok voltak a pásztorok, és nem keresték az Urat; ezért nem lettek szerencsésekké, és minden nyájuk szétszóratott.
22 A hír hangja ímé megjött, és nagy zúgás [kél] észak földe felõl, hogy pusztává tegyék Júdának városait, és sakálok tanyájává.
23 Tudom Uram, hogy az embernek nincs hatalmában az õ útja, és egyetlen járókelõ sem teheti, hogy irányozza a maga lépését!
24 Fenyíts meg engem, Uram, de mértékkel, nem haragodban, hogy szét ne morzsolj engem!
25 Öntsd ki haragodat ama nemzetekre, a melyek nem ismernek téged, és ama nemzetségekre, a melyek nem hívják segítségül a te nevedet; mert megették Jákóbot, bizony megették õt, és elemésztették õt, és lakóhelyét elpusztították!
11 Az a beszéd, a melyet az Úr beszélt Jeremiásnak, mondván:
2 Halljátok meg e szövetség igéit, és beszéljétek el Júda férfiainak és Jeruzsálem lakosainak!
3 Ezt mondjad azért nékik: Így szól az Úr, Izráelnek Istene: Átkozott mindenki, a ki meg nem hallja e szövetségnek igéit,
4 A melyet akkor parancsoltam a ti atyáitoknak, a mikor kihoztam õket Égyiptom földérõl, a vaskemenczébõl, mondván: Halljátok meg az én szómat, és cselekedjétek mindazokat, a miket én parancsolok néktek, és népemmé lesztek, én pedig Istenetekké leszek néktek;
5 Hogy beteljesítsem az esküvést, a melylyel megesküdtem a ti atyáitoknak, hogy nékik adom a téjjel és mézzel folyó földet, a mint most van ez! És felelék, és mondám: Ámen, Uram!
6 És monda az Úr nékem: Kiáltsd mindez igéket Júda városaiban és Jeruzsálem utczáin, mondván: Halljátok e szövetség igéit, és cselekedjétek azokat!
7 Mert kérve kértem a ti atyáitokat, a mikor felhoztam õket Égyiptom földérõl, mind e napig, szünetlenül kérvén és mondván: Halljátok meg az én szómat!
8 De nem hallották, még fülöket sem hajtották [arra,] hanem ment kiki az õ gonosz szívének hamissága után, és rájok szabtam e szövetségnek minden igéjét, a melyeket azért parancsoltam, hogy megcselekedjék, de nem cselekedték.
9 És monda az Úr nékem: Pártütés van a Júda férfiai és Jeruzsálem lakosai között.
10 Visszatértek az õ atyáiknak elébbi bûneire, a kik nem akarták hallani az én igéimet, és õk magok [is] idegen istenek után járnak, hogy azoknak szolgáljanak. Izráel háza és Júda háza megszegte az én szövetségemet, a melyet az õ atyáikkal kötöttem.
11 Azért ezt mondja az Úr: Ímé, én veszedelmet hozok reájok, a melybõl ki nem menekülhetnek, és kiáltanak majd én hozzám, de nem hallgatom meg õket.
12 És elmennek Júda városai és Jeruzsálem lakosai, és kiáltanak az istenekhez, a kiknek õk áldozni szoktak, de [azok] nem oltalmazzák meg õket az õ nyomorúságuk idején.
13 Mert városaidnak száma szerint voltak néked isteneid, oh Júda, és Jeruzsálem utczáinak száma szerint készítettétek a gyalázatnak oltárait, az oltárokat, hogy áldozzatok a Baálnak!
14 Te azért ne esdekelj e népért, és egy kiáltó és esdeklõ szót se ejts érettök, mert én meg nem hallgatom õket, mikor kiáltanak majd hozzám az õ nyomorúságuk miatt.
15 Mi köze az én kedveltemnek az én házamhoz? Temérdek istentelenséget cselekedtél; a szent húst abbahagytad; mikor gonoszságban vagy, akkor örvendezel.
16 Lombos, szép formás gyümölcsû olajfa nevet adott néked az Úr. Nagy vihar morajánál tüzet gyújta rajta, és leromlottak az ágai.
17 A Seregek Ura, a ki plántált téged, rosszat végzett felõled Izráel házának és Júda házának rosszasága miatt, a mit elkövettek magokban, hogy engemet haragra ingereljenek, áldozván a Baálnak.
18 Az Úr tudtul adta nékem, és én tudtam; te láttattad meg velem az õ cselekedeteiket is!
19 Én pedig olyan valék, mint a mészárszékre hurczolt szelíd bárány, és nem tudtam, hogy terveket szõttek ellenem, [mondván:] Pusztítsuk el [e] fát gyümölcsével együtt; irtsuk ki ezt az élõk földébõl, hogy még a nevét se emlegessék többé!
20 És oh Seregek Ura, igaz biró, veséknek és szívnek vizsgálója: hadd lássam a te bosszúállásodat rajtok, mert néked jelentettem meg az én ügyemet!
21 Azért ezt mondja az Úr az Anatóthbeli embereknek, a kik életedre törnek és ezt mondják: Ne prófétálj az Úr nevében, hogy meg ne halj a mi kezünk által!
22 Azért ezt mondja a Seregek Ura: Ímé, én megfenyítem õket; az ifjak fegyver által halnak meg, fiaik és leányaik [pedig] meghalnak éhen.
23 És senki sem marad meg közülök, hogyha veszedelmet hozok az Anatóthbeli emberekre, az õ büntetésök esztendejét.
12 Igaz vagy Uram, hogyha perlek [is] veled; éppen azért hadd beszélhessek veled peres kérdésekrõl! Miért szerencsés az istentelenek útja? [Miért] vannak békességben mindnyájan a hûtlenkedõk?
2 Beplántálod õket, meg is gyökereznek; felnevekednek, gyümölcsöt is teremnek; közel vagy te az õ szájokhoz, de távol vagy az õ szívöktõl!
3 Engem pedig ismersz te, Uram! látsz engem, és megvizsgáltad irántad való érzésemet: szakítsd külön õket, mint a mészárszékre való juhokat, és készítsd õket a megölésnek napjára!
4 Meddig gyászoljon a föld, és [meddig] száradjon el minden fû a mezõn? A benne lakók gonoszsága miatt pusztul el barom és madár; mert azt mondják: Nem látja meg a mi végünket!
5 Hogyha gyalogokkal futsz, és elfárasztanak téged: mimódon versenyezhetnél a lovakkal? És [ha csak] békességes földön vagy bátorságban: ugyan mit cselekednél a Jordán hullámai között?
6 Bizony még a te atyádfiai és a te atyádnak háznépe is: õk is hûtlenül bántak veled; õk is tele torokkal kiabáltak utánad! Ne higyj nékik, még ha szépen beszélgetnek is veled!
7 Elhagytam házamat; ellöktem örökségemet, ellenségének kezébe adtam azt, a kit lelkem szeret.
8 Az én örökségem olyanná lett hozzám, mint az oroszlán az erdõben; ordítva támadt ellenem; ezért gyûlölöm õt.
9 Tarka madár-é az én örökségem nékem? Nem [gyûlnek-]é ellene madarak mindenfelõl? Jõjjetek, seregeljetek össze mind ti mezei vadak; siessetek az evésre!
10 Sok pásztor pusztította az én szõlõmet, taposta az én osztályrészemet; az én drága örökségemet sivatag pusztává tették!
11 Pusztává tették, felém sír, mint puszta! Elpusztíttatik az egész föld, mert nincs senki, a ki eszére térjen.
12 A pusztában levõ minden magaslatra pusztítók érkeznek, mert az Úr fegyvere emészt a föld egyik szélétõl a föld másik széléig; senkinek sem lesz békessége.
13 Búzát vetettek és tövist aratnak; fáradnak, [de] nem boldogulnak, és szégyent vallotok a ti jövedelmetekkel az Úr haragjának búsulása miatt.
14 Ezt mondja az Úr minden én gonosz szomszédom felõl, a kik hozzányúlnak az én örökségemhez, a melyet örökségül adtam az én népemnek, Izráelnek: Ímé, én kigyomlálom õket az õ földükbõl, és Júda házát [is] kigyomlálom közülök!
15 És azután, ha majd kigyomlálom õket, ismét könyörülök rajtok, és visszahozom õket, kit-kit az õ örökségébe, és kit-kit az õ földére.
16 És ha megtanulják az én népemnek utait, és az én nevemre esküsznek [ilyen módon:] Él az Úr! a mint megtanították népemet megesküdni a Baálra: akkor felépülnek majd népem között.
17 Ha pedig nem hallgatnak meg, akkor bizony kigyomlálom azt a népet, és elvesztem, azt mondja az Úr.
13 Ezt mondá az Úr nékem: Menj el, és vásárolj magadnak lenövet, és illeszd azt a derekadra, de vízbe ne vidd be azt!
2 És megvásároltam az övet, a mint az Úr rendelte vala, és derekamra illesztém.
3 És másodszor szól vala az Úr hozzám, mondván:
4 Vedd az övet, a melyet vásároltál, a mely a derekadon van, és kelj fel, és menj az Eufrateshez, és rejtsd el azt ott a kõszikla hasadékában.
5 És elmenék, és elrejtém azt az Eufratesnél, a mint megparancsolta nékem az Úr.
6 Sok nap mulva pedig [újra] monda nékem az Úr: Kelj fel, menj az Eufrateshez, és vedd el onnan az övet, a mely felõl parancsoltam, hogy ott rejtsd el.
7 És elmenék az Eufrateshez, és kiásám, és kivevém arról a helyrõl az övet, a hová elrejtettem azt, és ímé, az öv rothadt vala, egészen hasznavehetetlen.
8 És szóla az Úr nékem, mondván:
9 Ezt mondja az Úr: Így rothasztom meg a Júda kevélységét, és a nagy Jeruzsálem kevélységét.
10 Ez a gonosz nép, a mely nem akar hallgatni az én beszédeimre, a mely a maga szívének hamisságában jár, és jár idegen istenek után, hogy azoknak szolgáljon, és azokat imádja: olyanná lesz majd, mint ez az öv, a mely egészen hasznavehetetlen.
11 Mert a miként derekára kapcsolja a férfi az övet; akként kapcsoltam magamhoz Izráelnek egész házát és Júdának egész házát, azt mondja az Úr, hogy legyenek az én népemmé, az én nevemre, dicséretemre és tisztességemre, de nem engedelmeskedtek.
12 Ilyen szókkal szólj azért nékik: Ezt mondja az Úr, Izráelnek Istene: Minden tömlõt meg kell tölteni borral! És azt mondják néked: Avagy nem tudjuk-é jól, hogy minden tömlõt borral kell megtölteni?
13 Te pedig azt mondd nékik: Ezt mondja az Úr: Ímé betöltöm e földnek minden lakosát, és a királyokat, a kik Dávid trónján ülnek, és a papokat, a prófétákat, és Jeruzsálemnek minden lakosát részegséggel;
14 És összeütöm õket, egyiket a másikhoz, az atyákat és a fiakat együtt, azt mondja az Úr; nem kegyelmezek meg, és nem kedvezek, és nem leszek irgalmas, hogy el ne veszítsem õket!
15 Hallgassatok és figyelmezzetek; ne fuvalkodjatok fel, mert az Úr szólott!
16 Dicsõítsétek az Urat, a ti Isteneteket, mielõtt setétséget szerezne, és mielõtt megütnétek lábaitokat a setét hegyekben; mert világosságot vártok, és halál árnyékává változtatja azt, és sûrû homálylyá fordítja!
17 Ha pedig nem hallgatjátok ezt: sírni fog az én lelkem a rejtekhelyeken [a ti] kevélység[tek] miatt, és zokogva zokog; a szemem pedig könyeket hullat, mert az Úr népe fogságba vitetik.
18 Mondd meg a királynak és a királynéasszonynak: Alázzátok meg magatokat, és üljetek veszteg, mert leesik fejetekrõl a ti dicsõségtek koronája!
19 A dél felõl való városok bezároltatnak, és nem lesz, a ki megnyissa [azokat;] fogságra vitetik Júda egészen, fogságra vitetik mindenestül!
20 Emeljétek fel szemeiteket, és nézzétek azokat, a kik északról jõnek! Hol van a nyáj, a mely néked adatott, a te dicsõségednek juhnyája?
21 Mit mondasz, hogy ha megfenyít téged? Hiszen te oktattad õket magad ellen, fejedelmekké [tetted fejeden!] A fájdalmak nem környékeznek-é még téged, mint a szülõasszonyt?
22 És ha azt mondod a te szívedben: Miért következnének ezek reám? A te hamisságod sokaságáért takartatik fel a te ruhád, és lesznek mezítelenekké a te sarkaid.
23 Elváltoztathatja-é bõrét a szerecsen, és a párducz az õ foltosságát? [Úgy] ti is cselekedhettek jót, a kik megszoktátok a gonoszt.
24 Azért szétszórom õket, a mint hányja-veti a pozdorját a pusztának szele.
25 Ez a te sorsod, a te kimért részed én tõlem, ezt mondja az Úr, a ki elfelejtkeztél én rólam, és hittél a hazugságnak.
26 Azért én is arczodra borítom fel a te ruhádat, hogy látható legyen a te gyalázatod!
27 A te paráznaságaidat és nyihogásaidat, bujálkodásodnak undokságát: a halmokon, a mezõn láttam a te útálatosságaidat. Jaj néked Jeruzsálem! Nem leszel tiszta ezután [se?] Meddig még?

God and Idols(A)
10 Hear what the Lord says to you, people of Israel. 2 This is what the Lord says:
“Do not learn the ways of the nations(B)
or be terrified by signs(C) in the heavens,
though the nations are terrified by them.
3 For the practices of the peoples are worthless;
they cut a tree out of the forest,
and a craftsman(D) shapes it with his chisel.(E)
4 They adorn it with silver(F) and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so it will not totter.(G)
5 Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field,
their idols cannot speak;(H)
they must be carried
because they cannot walk.(I)
Do not fear them;
they can do no harm(J)
nor can they do any good.”(K)
6 No one is like you,(L) Lord;
you are great,(M)
and your name is mighty in power.
7 Who should not fear(N) you,
King of the nations?(O)
This is your due.
Among all the wise leaders of the nations
and in all their kingdoms,
there is no one like you.
8 They are all senseless(P) and foolish;(Q)
they are taught by worthless wooden idols.(R)
9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish(S)
and gold from Uphaz.
What the craftsman and goldsmith have made(T)
is then dressed in blue and purple—
all made by skilled workers.
10 But the Lord is the true God;
he is the living God,(U) the eternal King.(V)
When he is angry,(W) the earth trembles;(X)
the nations cannot endure his wrath.(Y)
11 “Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish(Z) from the earth and from under the heavens.’”[a]
12 But God made(AA) the earth(AB) by his power;
he founded the world by his wisdom(AC)
and stretched out the heavens(AD) by his understanding.
13 When he thunders,(AE) the waters in the heavens roar;
he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
He sends lightning(AF) with the rain(AG)
and brings out the wind from his storehouses.(AH)
14 Everyone is senseless and without knowledge;
every goldsmith is shamed(AI) by his idols.
The images he makes are a fraud;(AJ)
they have no breath in them.
15 They are worthless,(AK) the objects of mockery;
when their judgment comes, they will perish.
16 He who is the Portion(AL) of Jacob is not like these,
for he is the Maker of all things,(AM)
including Israel, the people of his inheritance(AN)—
the Lord Almighty is his name.(AO)
Coming Destruction
17 Gather up your belongings(AP) to leave the land,
you who live under siege.
18 For this is what the Lord says:
“At this time I will hurl(AQ) out
those who live in this land;
I will bring distress(AR) on them
so that they may be captured.”
19 Woe to me because of my injury!
My wound(AS) is incurable!
Yet I said to myself,
“This is my sickness, and I must endure(AT) it.”
20 My tent(AU) is destroyed;
all its ropes are snapped.
My children are gone from me and are no more;(AV)
no one is left now to pitch my tent
or to set up my shelter.
21 The shepherds(AW) are senseless(AX)
and do not inquire of the Lord;(AY)
so they do not prosper(AZ)
and all their flock is scattered.(BA)
22 Listen! The report is coming—
a great commotion from the land of the north!(BB)
It will make the towns of Judah desolate,(BC)
a haunt of jackals.(BD)
Jeremiah’s Prayer
23 Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own;
it is not for them to direct their steps.(BE)
24 Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure—
not in your anger,(BF)
or you will reduce me to nothing.(BG)
25 Pour out your wrath on the nations(BH)
that do not acknowledge you,
on the peoples who do not call on your name.(BI)
For they have devoured(BJ) Jacob;
they have devoured him completely
and destroyed his homeland.(BK)
The Covenant Is Broken
11 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Listen to the terms of this covenant(BL) and tell them to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem. 3 Tell them that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Cursed(BM) is the one who does not obey the terms of this covenant— 4 the terms I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt,(BN) out of the iron-smelting furnace.(BO)’ I said, ‘Obey(BP) me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people,(BQ) and I will be your God. 5 Then I will fulfill the oath I swore(BR) to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey’(BS)—the land you possess today.”
I answered, “Amen,(BT) Lord.”
6 The Lord said to me, “Proclaim(BU) all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: ‘Listen to the terms of this covenant and follow(BV) them. 7 From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again,(BW) saying, “Obey me.” 8 But they did not listen or pay attention;(BX) instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts.(BY) So I brought on them all the curses(BZ) of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.(CA)’”
9 Then the Lord said to me, “There is a conspiracy(CB) among the people of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem. 10 They have returned to the sins of their ancestors,(CC) who refused to listen to my words.(CD) They have followed other gods(CE) to serve them.(CF) Both Israel and Judah have broken the covenant(CG) I made with their ancestors. 11 Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will bring on them a disaster(CH) they cannot escape.(CI) Although they cry(CJ) out to me, I will not listen(CK) to them. 12 The towns of Judah and the people of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they burn incense,(CL) but they will not help them at all when disaster(CM) strikes. 13 You, Judah, have as many gods(CN) as you have towns;(CO) and the altars you have set up to burn incense(CP) to that shameful(CQ) god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’
14 “Do not pray(CR) for this people or offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen(CS) when they call to me in the time of their distress.
15 “What is my beloved doing in my temple
as she, with many others, works out her evil schemes?
Can consecrated meat(CT) avert your punishment?(CU)
When you engage in your wickedness,
then you rejoice.[b]”
16 The Lord called you a thriving olive tree(CV)
with fruit beautiful in form.
But with the roar of a mighty storm
he will set it on fire,(CW)
and its branches will be broken.(CX)
17 The Lord Almighty, who planted(CY) you, has decreed disaster(CZ) for you, because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil and aroused(DA) my anger by burning incense to Baal.(DB)
Plot Against Jeremiah
18 Because the Lord revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at that time he showed me what they were doing. 19 I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter;(DC) I did not realize that they had plotted(DD) against me, saying,
“Let us destroy the tree and its fruit;
let us cut him off from the land of the living,(DE)
that his name be remembered(DF) no more.”
20 But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously(DG)
and test the heart(DH) and mind,(DI)
let me see your vengeance(DJ) on them,
for to you I have committed my cause.
21 Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of Anathoth(DK) who are threatening to kill you,(DL) saying, “Do not prophesy(DM) in the name of the Lord or you will die(DN) by our hands”— 22 therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will punish them. Their young men(DO) will die by the sword, their sons and daughters by famine. 23 Not even a remnant(DP) will be left to them, because I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment.(DQ)”
Jeremiah’s Complaint
12 You are always righteous,(DR) Lord,
when I bring a case(DS) before you.
Yet I would speak with you about your justice:(DT)
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?(DU)
Why do all the faithless live at ease?
2 You have planted(DV) them, and they have taken root;
they grow and bear fruit.(DW)
You are always on their lips
but far from their hearts.(DX)
3 Yet you know me, Lord;
you see me and test(DY) my thoughts about you.
Drag them off like sheep(DZ) to be butchered!
Set them apart for the day of slaughter!(EA)
4 How long will the land lie parched(EB)
and the grass in every field be withered?(EC)
Because those who live in it are wicked,
the animals and birds have perished.(ED)
Moreover, the people are saying,
“He will not see what happens to us.”
God’s Answer
5 “If you have raced with men on foot
and they have worn you out,
how can you compete with horses?
If you stumble[c] in safe country,
how will you manage in the thickets(EE) by[d] the Jordan?
6 Your relatives, members of your own family—
even they have betrayed you;
they have raised a loud cry against you.(EF)
Do not trust them,
though they speak well of you.(EG)
7 “I will forsake(EH) my house,
abandon(EI) my inheritance;
I will give the one I love(EJ)
into the hands of her enemies.(EK)
8 My inheritance has become to me
like a lion(EL) in the forest.
She roars at me;
therefore I hate her.(EM)
9 Has not my inheritance become to me
like a speckled bird of prey
that other birds of prey surround and attack?
Go and gather all the wild beasts;
bring them to devour.(EN)
10 Many shepherds(EO) will ruin my vineyard
and trample down my field;
they will turn my pleasant field
into a desolate wasteland.(EP)
11 It will be made a wasteland,(EQ)
parched and desolate before me;(ER)
the whole land will be laid waste
because there is no one who cares.
12 Over all the barren heights in the desert
destroyers will swarm,
for the sword(ES) of the Lord(ET) will devour(EU)
from one end of the land to the other;(EV)
no one will be safe.(EW)
13 They will sow wheat but reap thorns;
they will wear themselves out but gain nothing.(EX)
They will bear the shame of their harvest
because of the Lord’s fierce anger.”(EY)
14 This is what the Lord says: “As for all my wicked neighbors who seize the inheritance(EZ) I gave my people Israel, I will uproot(FA) them from their lands and I will uproot(FB) the people of Judah from among them. 15 But after I uproot them, I will again have compassion(FC) and will bring(FD) each of them back to their own inheritance and their own country. 16 And if they learn(FE) well the ways of my people and swear by my name, saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives’(FF)—even as they once taught my people to swear by Baal(FG)—then they will be established among my people.(FH) 17 But if any nation does not listen, I will completely uproot and destroy(FI) it,” declares the Lord.
A Linen Belt
13 This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist, but do not let it touch water.” 2 So I bought a belt, as the Lord directed, and put it around my waist.
3 Then the word of the Lord came to me a second time:(FJ) 4 “Take the belt you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go now to Perath[e](FK) and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks.” 5 So I went and hid it at Perath, as the Lord told me.(FL)
6 Many days later the Lord said to me, “Go now to Perath and get the belt I told you to hide there.” 7 So I went to Perath and dug up the belt and took it from the place where I had hidden it, but now it was ruined and completely useless.
8 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 9 “This is what the Lord says: ‘In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride(FM) of Jerusalem. 10 These wicked people, who refuse to listen(FN) to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts(FO) and go after other gods(FP) to serve and worship them,(FQ) will be like this belt—completely useless!(FR) 11 For as a belt is bound around the waist, so I bound all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah to me,’ declares the Lord, ‘to be my people for my renown(FS) and praise and honor.(FT) But they have not listened.’(FU)
Wineskins
12 “Say to them: ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Every wineskin should be filled with wine.’ And if they say to you, ‘Don’t we know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?’ 13 then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am going to fill with drunkenness(FV) all who live in this land, including the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets and all those living in Jerusalem. 14 I will smash them one against the other, parents and children alike, declares the Lord. I will allow no pity(FW) or mercy or compassion(FX) to keep me from destroying(FY) them.’”
Threat of Captivity
15 Hear and pay attention,
do not be arrogant,
for the Lord has spoken.(FZ)
16 Give glory(GA) to the Lord your God
before he brings the darkness,
before your feet stumble(GB)
on the darkening hills.
You hope for light,
but he will turn it to utter darkness
and change it to deep gloom.(GC)
17 If you do not listen,(GD)
I will weep in secret
because of your pride;
my eyes will weep bitterly,
overflowing with tears,(GE)
because the Lord’s flock(GF) will be taken captive.(GG)
18 Say to the king(GH) and to the queen mother,(GI)
“Come down from your thrones,
for your glorious crowns(GJ)
will fall from your heads.”
19 The cities in the Negev will be shut up,
and there will be no one to open them.
All Judah(GK) will be carried into exile,
carried completely away.
20 Look up and see
those who are coming from the north.(GL)
Where is the flock(GM) that was entrusted to you,
the sheep of which you boasted?
21 What will you say when the Lord sets over you
those you cultivated as your special allies?(GN)
Will not pain grip you
like that of a woman in labor?(GO)
22 And if you ask yourself,
“Why has this happened to me?”(GP)—
it is because of your many sins(GQ)
that your skirts have been torn off(GR)
and your body mistreated.(GS)
23 Can an Ethiopian[f] change his skin
or a leopard its spots?
Neither can you do good
who are accustomed to doing evil.(GT)
24 “I will scatter you like chaff(GU)
driven by the desert wind.(GV)
25 This is your lot,
the portion(GW) I have decreed for you,”
declares the Lord,
“because you have forgotten(GX) me
and trusted in false gods.(GY)
26 I will pull up your skirts over your face
that your shame may be seen(GZ)—
27 your adulteries and lustful neighings,
your shameless prostitution!(HA)
I have seen your detestable acts
on the hills and in the fields.(HB)
Woe to you, Jerusalem!
How long will you be unclean?”(HC)
