Siembran vientos y cosechan tempestades
8 »¡Pon la trompeta sobre tus labios!
¡Un águila se cierne sobre la casa del Señor!
Han quebrantado mi pacto
y se han rebelado contra mi Ley,
2 Israel clama a mí:
“¡Dios nuestro, te conocemos!”.
3 Pero Israel ha rechazado el bien,
así que un enemigo lo perseguirá.
4 Establecen reyes sin mi consentimiento
y escogen príncipes sin mi aprobación.
Con su plata y con su oro se hacen ídolos
para su propia destrucción.
5 Samaria, ¡arroja el becerro que tienes por ídolo!
Contra ustedes se ha encendido mi ira.
¿Hasta cuándo serán incapaces de purificarse?
6 ¡Ese becerro procede de Israel!
Es obra de un escultor,
no es Dios.
Ese becerro de Samaria
será hecho pedazos.
7 »Sembraron vientos
y cosecharán tempestades.
El tallo no tiene espiga
y no producirá harina;
si acaso llegara a producirla,
se la tragarían los extranjeros.
8 Pues a Israel se lo han tragado
y hoy es de poca estima entre las naciones.
9 Porque ellos subieron a Asiria;
se apartaron como asno salvaje
y Efraín se vendió a sus amantes.
10 Aunque se haya vendido a las naciones,
ahora los reuniré.
Comenzarán a angustiarse
bajo la opresión del rey poderoso.
11 »Efraín multiplicó sus altares para ofrendas por el pecado
y esos altares se convirtieron en lugares para pecar.
12 Les escribí las grandezas de mi Ley,
pero las tuvieron como cosa extraña.
13 Me han ofrecido sacrificios y ofrendas,
y se han comido la carne,
pero el Señor no se agrada con ellos.
Ahora voy a recordar sus maldades
y castigaré sus pecados;
y tendrán que regresar a Egipto.
14 Israel se olvidó de su Hacedor
y se edificó palacios;
Judá multiplicó las ciudades amuralladas;
pero yo enviaré fuego sobre sus ciudades
y consumirá sus fortalezas».
El castigo a Israel
9 No te alegres, Israel;
no hagas fiesta como las otras naciones,
porque te has prostituido.
¡Le has sido infiel a tu Dios!
Prefieres la paga de prostituta
que recibes en todos los trigales.[a]
2 Ni el trigo ni las uvas podrán alimentarlos;
el vino nuevo les faltará.
3 No habitarán en la tierra del Señor;
Efraín regresará a Egipto
y comerá alimentos impuros en Asiria.
4 No ofrecerán al Señor ofrendas líquidas de vino
ni le serán gratos sus sacrificios.
Tales sacrificios serán para ellos como pan de lágrimas;
quienes lo coman quedarán impuros.
Esa comida será para ellos mismos,
pero no entrará en la casa del Señor.
5 ¿Qué harán ustedes en el día de festividad,
en el día de la fiesta del Señor?
6 Aunque escapen de la destrucción,
los recogerá Egipto
y los enterrará Menfis.
Sus tesoros de plata se llenarán de ortigas,
y los espinos invadirán sus tiendas de campaña.
7 Han llegado los días del castigo,
han llegado los días de la retribución.
¡Que lo sepa Israel!
Es tan grande tu maldad
y tan intensa tu hostilidad,
que al profeta se le tiene por necio,
y al hombre inspirado, por loco.
8 El profeta, junto con mi Dios,
es el centinela de Efraín,[b]
pero enfrenta trampas en todos sus caminos,
y hostilidad en la casa de su Dios.
9 Han llegado al colmo de la corrupción,
como en los días de Guibeá;
¡pero Dios se acordará de sus maldades
y los castigará por sus pecados!
10 «Cuando encontré a Israel,
fue como hallar uvas en el desierto;
cuando vi a sus antepasados,
fue como ver los primeros frutos en la higuera.
Pero ellos se fueron a Baal Peor
y se entregaron a la vergüenza;
¡se volvieron tan detestables como el objeto de su amor!
11 El esplendor de Efraín saldrá volando como un ave;
no habrá más concepción ni embarazo ni nacimiento.
12 Y aun cuando vean crecer a sus hijos,
yo los arrebataré hasta que no quede ninguno.
¡Ay de ellos cuando los abandone!
13 He visto a Efraín y a Tiro
plantados en un lugar agradable.[c]
Pero Efraín entregará sus hijos al verdugo».
14 Dales, Señor…
¿qué les darás?
¡Dales vientres que aborten
y pechos resecos!
15 «Toda su maldad comenzó en Guilgal;
allí comencé a aborrecerlos.
Por causa de sus maldades,
los expulsaré de mi casa.
No los amaré más,
pues todos sus líderes son rebeldes.
16 Efraín se ha marchitado:
su raíz se secó
y no produce fruto.
Aunque llegue a tener hijos,
mataré el precioso fruto de su vientre».
17 Como no lo obedecieron, mi Dios los rechazará;
andarán errantes entre las naciones.
10 Israel era una vid frondosa
que daba fruto para sí mismo.
Pero cuanto más aumentaba su fruto,
más altares construía;
cuanto más prosperaba su país,
más hermosas hacía sus piedras sagradas.
2 Su corazón es engañoso,
pero tendrá que cargar con su culpa.
El Señor destrozará sus altares
y devastará sus piedras sagradas.
3 Tal vez dirán: «No hemos temido al Señor
y por eso no tenemos rey.
Pero aun si lo tuviéramos,
¿qué podría hacer por nosotros?».
4 Hacen muchas promesas;
juran con falsedad
y hacen tratos;
por eso florecen los pleitos
como la mala yerba en el campo.
5 Temen los moradores de Samaria
por el ternero que adoran en Bet Avén.[d]
El pueblo del becerro hará duelo por él
y también los sacerdotes idólatras,
los que se regocijaron por su esplendor,
porque se lo llevarán al destierro.
6 El becerro será llevado a Asiria
como tributo para el gran rey.
Efraín quedará humillado;
Israel se avergonzará de sus planes.
7 Samaria y su rey desaparecerán
como rama arrastrada por el agua.
8 Serán destruidos sus altares paganos,
lugares de pecado de Israel.
Cardos y espinos crecerán sobre sus altares.
Entonces dirán a las montañas: «¡Cúbrannos!»,
y a las colinas: «¡Caigan sobre nosotros!».
9 «Tú, Israel, has venido pecando desde los días de Guibeá
y allí te has mantenido.
¿No alcanzará la guerra a los malvados en Guibeá?
10 Cuando yo quiera, los castigaré;
entonces las naciones se juntarán contra ellos
para aprisionarlos por su doble maldad.
11 Efraín es una ternera adiestrada
a la que le gusta trillar;
pues bien, yo pondré el yugo sobre su hermoso cuello.
Haré que Efraín lleve el yugo,
Judá tendrá que arar
y Jacob preparará la tierra».
12 ¡Siembren para ustedes justicia!
¡Cosechen el fruto del amor inagotable
y abran surcos en terrenos no labrados!
¡Ya es tiempo de buscar al Señor!,
hasta que él venga y les envíe lluvias de justicia.
13 Pero ustedes sembraron maldad,
cosecharon crímenes
y comieron el fruto de la mentira,
porque confiaron en sus carros
y en la multitud de sus guerreros.
14 Un estruendo de guerra se levantará contra su pueblo
y todas sus fortalezas serán devastadas,
como devastó Salmán a Bet Arbel en el día de la batalla,
cuando las madres fueron destrozadas junto con sus hijos.
15 Esto es lo que les sucederá a ustedes, Betel,
a causa de su extrema maldad.
Pues el rey de Israel será destruido por completo
en cuanto amanezca.
El amor de Dios por Israel
11 «Desde que Israel era niño, yo lo amé.
De Egipto llamé a mi hijo,
2 pero cuanto más lo llamaba,
más se alejaba de mí.[e]
Sacrificaban a los baales
y quemaban incienso a los ídolos.
3 Fui quien enseñó a caminar a Efraín,
tomándolo de los brazos.
Pero él no quiso reconocer
que era yo quien lo sanaba.
4 Lo atraje con cuerdas de ternura,[f]
lo atraje con lazos de amor.
Le quité de la cerviz el yugo
y con cariño me acerqué para alimentarlo.
5 »No volverá a tierra de Egipto
y Asiria reinará sobre ellos,
porque no quisieron volverse a mí.
6 En sus ciudades se blandirán espadas,
que destrozarán los barrotes de sus puertas
y acabarán con sus planes.
7 Mi pueblo está decidido a rebelarse contra mí.
Aunque me invocan como el Altísimo, no los exaltaré.
8 »¿Cómo podría yo entregarte, Efraín?
¿Cómo podría abandonarte, Israel?
¿Cómo puedo entregarte como a Admá?
¿Cómo puedo hacer contigo como con Zeboyín?
Dentro de mí, el corazón me da vuelcos,
y se me conmueven las entrañas.
9 Pero no daré rienda suelta a mi ira
ni volveré a destruir a Efraín.
Porque yo soy Dios y no hombre,
el Santo está entre ustedes;
y no iré contra sus ciudades».
10 El Señor rugirá como león
y ellos lo seguirán.
Cuando él lance su rugido,
sus hijos vendrán temblando de occidente.
11 «Vendrán desde Egipto,
temblando como aves;
vendrán desde Asiria, temblando como palomas,
y yo los estableceré en sus casas»,
afirma el Señor.
El pecado de Israel
12 «Efraín me ha rodeado de mentiras
y el reino de Israel, con fraude;
Judá anda errante, lejos de Dios;
¡lejos del Dios santísimo y fiel!
12 Efraín se alimenta de viento:
todo el día va tras el viento del este
y multiplica la mentira y la violencia.
Hace pactos con Asiria,
y a Egipto le da aceite como tributo».
2 El Señor tiene un pleito contra Judá:
le hará pagar a Jacob[g] todo lo que ha hecho;
le dará lo que merecen sus obras.
3 Ya en el seno materno suplantó a su hermano
y cuando se hizo hombre luchó con Dios.
4 Luchó con el ángel, y lo venció;
lloró y le rogó que lo favoreciera.
Se lo encontró en Betel
y allí habló con él;
5 ¡habló con el Señor Dios de los Ejércitos,
cuyo nombre es el Señor!
6 Pero tú debes volverte a tu Dios,
practicar el amor y la justicia
y esperar siempre en él.
7 Canaán[h] usa balanzas fraudulentas,
pues le gusta explotar a los demás.
8 Efraín dice con jactancia:
«¡Cómo me he enriquecido!
¡He amasado una gran fortuna!
En todas mis ganancias no encontrarán
que haya pecado en algo».
9 «Yo soy el Señor tu Dios
desde que estabas en Egipto;
haré que vuelvas a vivir en tiendas de campaña,
como en los días de nuestras fiestas.
10 Yo hablé a los profetas;
hice que tuvieran muchas visiones
y por medio de ellos les hablé en parábolas».
11 ¿Es Galaad malvado?
¡No hay duda de que no vale nada!
En Guilgal sacrifican toros;
por eso sus altares quedarán reducidos a montones de piedra
entre los surcos del campo.
12 Jacob huyó a un campo de Aram;[i]
Israel trabajó cuidando ovejas
en pago por su esposa.
13 El Señor usó a un profeta para sacar a Israel de Egipto
y por medio de un profeta lo cuidó.
14 Pero Efraín ha despertado su ira;
su Señor hará caer sobre él la culpa de la sangre que derramó
y devolverá sus injurias.
Por eso el Señor le hará pagar sus crímenes
y le devolverá sus injurias.
La ira del Señor contra Israel
13 Cuando Efraín hablaba, la gente temía;
él tenía la preeminencia sobre Israel.
Pero rindió culto a Baal y por ese pecado murió.
2 Sin embargo, siguen pecando,
pues se fabrican, según su ingenio,
imágenes de fundición e ídolos de plata
que no son más que obra de artesanos.
De ellos se dice:
«Ofrecen sacrificios humanos
y besan ídolos en forma de becerros».[j]
3 Por eso serán como nube matutina,
como rocío que temprano se evapora,
como paja que se lleva el viento,
como humo que se escapa por la chimenea.
4 «Pero yo soy el Señor tu Dios
desde que estabas en Egipto.
No conocerás[k] a otro dios fuera de mí
ni hay otro salvador que no sea yo.
5 Porque yo cuidé de ti en el desierto,
en esa tierra de terrible aridez.
6 Les di de comer y quedaron saciados;
una vez satisfechos, se volvieron arrogantes
y se olvidaron de mí.
7 Por eso, yo seré para ellos como un león;
los acecharé junto al camino como un leopardo.
8 Los atacaré y desgarraré su pecho
como una osa a quien le quitan sus cachorros.
¡Los devoraré como un león!
¡Los despedazaré como fiera del campo!
9 »Voy a destruirte, Israel,
porque estás contra quien te ayuda.
10 ¿Dónde está tu rey,
para que te salve en todas tus ciudades?
¿Dónde están tus líderes, de los que decías:
“Dame rey y príncipes”?
11 En mi ira te di rey
y en mi enojo te lo quité.
12 La maldad de Efraín fue anotada;
se ha registrado su pecado.
13 Llegan los dolores de parto,
pero él es una criatura necia:
cuando llega la hora del parto,
no se acomoda para salir.
14 »Yo los libraré del poder del sepulcro
y los rescataré de la muerte.[l]
¿Dónde están, oh muerte, tus plagas?
¿Dónde está, oh sepulcro, tu destrucción?
»¡No les tendré compasión!
15 Aunque Efraín prospere entre sus hermanos,
vendrá el viento del Señor,
el viento del este que se levanta del desierto
y se agotarán sus fuentes y manantiales.
¡Serán saqueados sus tesoros
y todos sus objetos preciosos!
16 El pueblo de Samaria cargará con su culpa
por haberse rebelado contra su Dios.
Caerán a filo de espada;
a los niños los lanzarán contra el suelo
y a las embarazadas les abrirán el vientre».
Arrepentimiento para traer bendición
14 Vuélvete, Israel, al Señor tu Dios.
¡Tu maldad te ha hecho caer!
2 Piensen bien lo que dirán
y vuélvanse al Señor con este ruego:
«Perdónanos nuestras maldades
y recíbenos con benevolencia,
pues queremos ofrecerte
el fruto de nuestros labios.
3 Asiria no podrá salvarnos;
no montaremos caballos de guerra.
Nunca más llamaremos “dios nuestro”
a cosas hechas por nuestras manos,
pues en ti el huérfano halla compasión».
Respuesta de Dios
4 «Yo sanaré su rebeldía
y los amaré de pura gracia,
porque mi ira contra ellos se ha calmado.
5 Yo seré para Israel como el rocío,
y lo haré florecer como lirio.
Hundirá sus raíces como cedro del Líbano.
6 Sus vástagos crecerán,
tendrán el esplendor del olivo
y la fragancia del cedro del Líbano.
7 Volverán a habitar bajo su sombra,
y crecerán como el trigo.
Echarán renuevos, como la vid,
y serán tan famosos como el vino del Líbano.
8 Efraín, ¿qué tengo que ver con los ídolos?
¡Soy yo quien te responde y cuida de ti!
Soy como el ciprés siempre verde;
tu fruto procede de mí».
9 ¿Quién es sabio?, el que entiende estas cosas;
¿quién tiene discernimiento?, el que las comprende.
Ciertamente son rectos los caminos del Señor:
en ellos caminan los justos,
mientras que allí tropiezan los rebeldes.

Israel to Reap the Whirlwind
8 “Put the trumpet(A) to your lips!
An eagle(B) is over the house of the Lord
because the people have broken my covenant(C)
and rebelled against my law.(D)
2 Israel cries out to me,
‘Our God, we acknowledge you!’
3 But Israel has rejected what is good;
an enemy will pursue him.(E)
4 They set up kings without my consent;
they choose princes without my approval.(F)
With their silver and gold
they make idols(G) for themselves
to their own destruction.
5 Samaria, throw out your calf-idol!(H)
My anger burns against them.
How long will they be incapable of purity?(I)
6 They are from Israel!
This calf—a metalworker has made it;
it is not God.(J)
It will be broken in pieces,
that calf(K) of Samaria.(L)
7 “They sow the wind
and reap the whirlwind.(M)
The stalk has no head;
it will produce no flour.(N)
Were it to yield grain,
foreigners would swallow it up.(O)
8 Israel is swallowed up;(P)
now she is among the nations
like something no one wants.(Q)
9 For they have gone up to Assyria(R)
like a wild donkey(S) wandering alone.
Ephraim has sold herself to lovers.(T)
10 Although they have sold themselves among the nations,
I will now gather them together.(U)
They will begin to waste away(V)
under the oppression of the mighty king.
11 “Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings,
these have become altars for sinning.(W)
12 I wrote for them the many things of my law,
but they regarded them as something foreign.(X)
13 Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to me,
and though they eat(Y) the meat,
the Lord is not pleased with them.(Z)
Now he will remember(AA) their wickedness
and punish their sins:(AB)
They will return to Egypt.(AC)
14 Israel has forgotten(AD) their Maker(AE)
and built palaces;
Judah has fortified many towns.
But I will send fire on their cities
that will consume their fortresses.”(AF)
Punishment for Israel
9 Do not rejoice, Israel;
do not be jubilant(AG) like the other nations.
For you have been unfaithful(AH) to your God;
you love the wages of a prostitute(AI)
at every threshing floor.
2 Threshing floors and winepresses will not feed the people;
the new wine(AJ) will fail them.
3 They will not remain(AK) in the Lord’s land;
Ephraim will return to Egypt(AL)
and eat unclean food in Assyria.(AM)
4 They will not pour out wine offerings(AN) to the Lord,
nor will their sacrifices please(AO) him.
Such sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners;(AP)
all who eat them will be unclean.(AQ)
This food will be for themselves;
it will not come into the temple of the Lord.(AR)
5 What will you do(AS) on the day of your appointed festivals,(AT)
on the feast days of the Lord?
6 Even if they escape from destruction,
Egypt will gather them,(AU)
and Memphis(AV) will bury them.(AW)
Their treasures of silver(AX) will be taken over by briers,
and thorns(AY) will overrun their tents.
7 The days of punishment(AZ) are coming,
the days of reckoning(BA) are at hand.
Let Israel know this.
Because your sins(BB) are so many
and your hostility so great,
the prophet is considered a fool,(BC)
the inspired person a maniac.(BD)
8 The prophet, along with my God,
is the watchman over Ephraim,[a]
yet snares(BE) await him on all his paths,
and hostility in the house of his God.(BF)
9 They have sunk deep into corruption,(BG)
as in the days of Gibeah.(BH)
God will remember(BI) their wickedness
and punish them for their sins.(BJ)
10 “When I found Israel,
it was like finding grapes in the desert;
when I saw your ancestors,
it was like seeing the early fruit(BK) on the fig(BL) tree.
But when they came to Baal Peor,(BM)
they consecrated themselves to that shameful idol(BN)
and became as vile as the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim’s glory(BO) will fly away like a bird(BP)—
no birth, no pregnancy, no conception.(BQ)
12 Even if they rear children,
I will bereave(BR) them of every one.
Woe(BS) to them
when I turn away from them!(BT)
13 I have seen Ephraim,(BU) like Tyre,
planted in a pleasant place.(BV)
But Ephraim will bring out
their children to the slayer.”(BW)
14 Give them, Lord—
what will you give them?
Give them wombs that miscarry
and breasts that are dry.(BX)
15 “Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal,(BY)
I hated them there.
Because of their sinful deeds,(BZ)
I will drive them out of my house.
I will no longer love them;(CA)
all their leaders are rebellious.(CB)
16 Ephraim(CC) is blighted,
their root is withered,
they yield no fruit.(CD)
Even if they bear children,
I will slay(CE) their cherished offspring.”
17 My God will reject(CF) them
because they have not obeyed(CG) him;
they will be wanderers among the nations.(CH)
10 Israel was a spreading vine;(CI)
he brought forth fruit for himself.
As his fruit increased,
he built more altars;(CJ)
as his land prospered,(CK)
he adorned his sacred stones.(CL)
2 Their heart is deceitful,(CM)
and now they must bear their guilt.(CN)
The Lord will demolish their altars(CO)
and destroy their sacred stones.(CP)
3 Then they will say, “We have no king
because we did not revere the Lord.
But even if we had a king,
what could he do for us?”
4 They make many promises,
take false oaths(CQ)
and make agreements;(CR)
therefore lawsuits spring up
like poisonous weeds(CS) in a plowed field.
5 The people who live in Samaria fear
for the calf-idol(CT) of Beth Aven.[b](CU)
Its people will mourn over it,
and so will its idolatrous priests,(CV)
those who had rejoiced over its splendor,
because it is taken from them into exile.(CW)
6 It will be carried to Assyria(CX)
as tribute(CY) for the great king.(CZ)
Ephraim will be disgraced;(DA)
Israel will be ashamed(DB) of its foreign alliances.
7 Samaria’s king will be destroyed,(DC)
swept away like a twig on the surface of the waters.
8 The high places(DD) of wickedness[c](DE) will be destroyed—
it is the sin of Israel.
Thorns(DF) and thistles will grow up
and cover their altars.(DG)
Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”(DH)
and to the hills, “Fall on us!”(DI)
9 “Since the days of Gibeah,(DJ) you have sinned,(DK) Israel,
and there you have remained.[d]
Will not war again overtake
the evildoers in Gibeah?
10 When I please, I will punish(DL) them;
nations will be gathered against them
to put them in bonds for their double sin.
11 Ephraim is a trained heifer
that loves to thresh;
so I will put a yoke(DM)
on her fair neck.
I will drive Ephraim,
Judah must plow,
and Jacob must break up the ground.
12 Sow(DN) righteousness(DO) for yourselves,
reap the fruit of unfailing love,
and break up your unplowed ground;(DP)
for it is time to seek(DQ) the Lord,
until he comes
and showers his righteousness(DR) on you.
13 But you have planted wickedness,
you have reaped evil,(DS)
you have eaten the fruit of deception.(DT)
Because you have depended on your own strength
and on your many warriors,(DU)
14 the roar of battle will rise against your people,
so that all your fortresses will be devastated(DV)—
as Shalman(DW) devastated Beth Arbel on the day of battle,
when mothers were dashed to the ground with their children.(DX)
15 So will it happen to you, Bethel,
because your wickedness is great.
When that day dawns,
the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.(DY)
God’s Love for Israel
11 “When Israel was a child,(DZ) I loved(EA) him,
and out of Egypt I called my son.(EB)
2 But the more they were called,
the more they went away from me.[e](EC)
They sacrificed to the Baals(ED)
and they burned incense to images.(EE)
3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
taking them by the arms;(EF)
but they did not realize
it was I who healed(EG) them.
4 I led them with cords of human kindness,
with ties of love.(EH)
To them I was like one who lifts
a little child to the cheek,
and I bent down to feed(EI) them.(EJ)
5 “Will they not return to Egypt(EK)
and will not Assyria(EL) rule over them
because they refuse to repent?(EM)
6 A sword(EN) will flash in their cities;
it will devour(EO) their false prophets
and put an end to their plans.
7 My people are determined to turn(EP) from me.(EQ)
Even though they call me God Most High,
I will by no means exalt them.
8 “How can I give you up,(ER) Ephraim?(ES)
How can I hand you over, Israel?
How can I treat you like Admah?
How can I make you like Zeboyim?(ET)
My heart is changed within me;
all my compassion(EU) is aroused.(EV)
9 I will not carry out my fierce anger,(EW)
nor will I devastate(EX) Ephraim again.
For I am God, and not a man(EY)—
the Holy One(EZ) among you.
I will not come against their cities.
10 They will follow the Lord;
he will roar(FA) like a lion.(FB)
When he roars,
his children will come trembling(FC) from the west.(FD)
11 They will come from Egypt,
trembling like sparrows,
from Assyria,(FE) fluttering like doves.(FF)
I will settle them in their homes,”(FG)
declares the Lord.
Israel’s Sin
12 Ephraim has surrounded me with lies,(FH)
Israel with deceit.
And Judah is unruly against God,
even against the faithful(FI) Holy One.[f](FJ)
12 [g]1 Ephraim(FK) feeds on the wind;(FL)
he pursues the east wind all day
and multiplies lies and violence.(FM)
He makes a treaty with Assyria(FN)
and sends olive oil to Egypt.(FO)
2 The Lord has a charge(FP) to bring against Judah;(FQ)
he will punish(FR) Jacob[h] according to his ways
and repay him according to his deeds.(FS)
3 In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel;(FT)
as a man he struggled(FU) with God.
4 He struggled with the angel and overcame him;
he wept and begged for his favor.
He found him at Bethel(FV)
and talked with him there—
5 the Lord God Almighty,
the Lord is his name!(FW)
6 But you must return(FX) to your God;
maintain love and justice,(FY)
and wait for your God always.(FZ)
7 The merchant uses dishonest scales(GA)
and loves to defraud.
8 Ephraim boasts,(GB)
“I am very rich; I have become wealthy.(GC)
With all my wealth they will not find in me
any iniquity or sin.”
9 “I have been the Lord your God
ever since you came out of Egypt;(GD)
I will make you live in tents(GE) again,
as in the days of your appointed festivals.
10 I spoke to the prophets,
gave them many visions
and told parables(GF) through them.”(GG)
11 Is Gilead wicked?(GH)
Its people are worthless!
Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal?(GI)
Their altars will be like piles of stones
on a plowed field.(GJ)
12 Jacob fled to the country of Aram[i];(GK)
Israel served to get a wife,
and to pay for her he tended sheep.(GL)
13 The Lord used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt,(GM)
by a prophet he cared for him.(GN)
14 But Ephraim has aroused his bitter anger;
his Lord will leave on him the guilt of his bloodshed(GO)
and will repay him for his contempt.(GP)
The Lord’s Anger Against Israel
13 When Ephraim spoke, people trembled;(GQ)
he was exalted(GR) in Israel.
But he became guilty of Baal worship(GS) and died.
2 Now they sin more and more;
they make(GT) idols for themselves from their silver,(GU)
cleverly fashioned images,
all of them the work of craftsmen.(GV)
It is said of these people,
“They offer human sacrifices!
They kiss[j](GW) calf-idols!(GX)”
3 Therefore they will be like the morning mist,
like the early dew that disappears,(GY)
like chaff(GZ) swirling from a threshing floor,(HA)
like smoke(HB) escaping through a window.
4 “But I have been the Lord your God
ever since you came out of Egypt.(HC)
You shall acknowledge(HD) no God but me,(HE)
no Savior(HF) except me.
5 I cared for you in the wilderness,(HG)
in the land of burning heat.
6 When I fed them, they were satisfied;
when they were satisfied, they became proud;(HH)
then they forgot(HI) me.(HJ)
7 So I will be like a lion(HK) to them,
like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
8 Like a bear robbed of her cubs,(HL)
I will attack them and rip them open;
like a lion(HM) I will devour them—
a wild animal will tear them apart.(HN)
9 “You are destroyed, Israel,
because you are against me,(HO) against your helper.(HP)
10 Where is your king,(HQ) that he may save you?
Where are your rulers in all your towns,
of whom you said,
‘Give me a king and princes’?(HR)
11 So in my anger I gave you a king,(HS)
and in my wrath I took him away.(HT)
12 The guilt of Ephraim is stored up,
his sins are kept on record.(HU)
13 Pains as of a woman in childbirth(HV) come to him,
but he is a child without wisdom;
when the time(HW) arrives,
he doesn’t have the sense to come out of the womb.(HX)
14 “I will deliver this people from the power of the grave;(HY)
I will redeem them from death.(HZ)
Where, O death, are your plagues?
Where, O grave, is your destruction?(IA)
“I will have no compassion,
15 even though he thrives(IB) among his brothers.
An east wind(IC) from the Lord will come,
blowing in from the desert;
his spring will fail
and his well dry up.(ID)
His storehouse will be plundered(IE)
of all its treasures.
16 The people of Samaria(IF) must bear their guilt,(IG)
because they have rebelled(IH) against their God.
They will fall by the sword;(II)
their little ones will be dashed(IJ) to the ground,
their pregnant women(IK) ripped open.”[k]
Repentance to Bring Blessing
14 [l]Return,(IL) Israel, to the Lord your God.
Your sins(IM) have been your downfall!(IN)
2 Take words with you
and return to the Lord.
Say to him:
“Forgive(IO) all our sins
and receive us graciously,(IP)
that we may offer the fruit of our lips.[m](IQ)
3 Assyria cannot save us;(IR)
we will not mount warhorses.(IS)
We will never again say ‘Our gods’(IT)
to what our own hands have made,(IU)
for in you the fatherless(IV) find compassion.”
4 “I will heal(IW) their waywardness(IX)
and love them freely,(IY)
for my anger has turned away(IZ) from them.
5 I will be like the dew(JA) to Israel;
he will blossom like a lily.(JB)
Like a cedar of Lebanon(JC)
he will send down his roots;(JD)
6 his young shoots will grow.
His splendor will be like an olive tree,(JE)
his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.(JF)
7 People will dwell again in his shade;(JG)
they will flourish like the grain,
they will blossom(JH) like the vine—
Israel’s fame will be like the wine(JI) of Lebanon.(JJ)
8 Ephraim, what more have I[n] to do with idols?(JK)
I will answer him and care for him.
I am like a flourishing juniper;(JL)
your fruitfulness comes from me.”
