Het Boek
13 Een verstandige zoon luistert aandachtig naar zijn vaders lessen, maar een spotter slaat bestraffing in de wind.
2 Van wijze en vrome woorden zal ieder het goede gebruiken, maar trouwelozen staat geweld te wachten.
3 Wie zijn tong bedwingt, behoudt zijn leven, maar lichtvaardig spreken wordt bestraft.
4 De luiaard is wel begerig, maar krijgt niets. Een vlijtig mens kent echter overvloed.
5 De rechtvaardige mens haat leugens, maar de goddeloze maakt zich gehaat en zet zichzelf voor schut.
6 De gerechtigheid beschermt wie oprecht leven, maar zondaars komt hun goddeloosheid duur te staan.
7 Er zijn mensen die zich rijk voordoen, maar in werkelijkheid niets hebben. Anderen gedragen zich als armen, maar zijn in werkelijkheid rijk.
8 Het losgeld voor een welgestelde is zijn rijkdom, een arme kent zoʼn bedreiging niet.
9 Het geluk en de vreugde van de rechtvaardigen zullen steeds toenemen, terwijl de lamp van de goddelozen wordt gedoofd.
10 Door trots en stijfkoppigheid ontstaat veel ruzie, daarom getuigt het van wijsheid als men zich wil laten gezeggen en onderwijzen.
11 Oneerlijk verkregen vermogen kent geen lang leven, maar wie met ijverig werken zijn kost verdient, zal zijn bezit vermeerderen.
12 Lang moeten uitzien naar iets moois maakt het hart bedroefd, maar een vervulde wens doet leven als een levensboom.
13 Wie Gods woord en zijn lessen veracht, komt dat duur te staan. Maar wie daar eerbiedig ontzag voor koestert, zal worden beloond.
14 De lessen van een wijze zijn een bron van leven en helpen dodelijke vallen te ontlopen.
15 Een verstandig mens wordt gerespecteerd, maar iedereen mijdt trouweloze mensen.
16 Wie verstandig is, handelt voorzichtig en oordeelkundig, een zot spreidt louter dwaasheid ten toon.
17 Een onbetrouwbare bode zal het slecht vergaan, maar een trouw gezant is een zegen.
18 Wie niet van het goede onderwijs wil horen staat armoe en schande te wachten, maar wie zich laat berispen zal worden geëerd.
19 Een wens die vervuld wordt, is iets heerlijks, maar de zot verafschuwt het idee dat hij het kwade moet nalaten.
20 Wie met verstandige mensen omgaat, wordt verstandig. Wie met slechte mensen omgaat, vergaat het slecht.
21 De zondaars zullen hun straf niet ontlopen, maar de rechtvaardige mens wordt door God beloond.
22 Het bezit van een goed mens is een erfenis voor zijn kleinkinderen, maar dat van de zondaar is voor de rechtvaardige bestemd.
23 Het werk van de armen levert veel voedsel op, maar er zijn sommigen die door gebrek aan inzicht tekort komen.
24 Wie nooit straft, bederft zijn zoon. Maar wie zijn zoon liefheeft, straft hem reeds op jonge leeftijd.
25 De rechtvaardige eet en wordt verzadigd, maar de maag van de goddelozen blijft rammelen.
Proverbs 13

13 A wise child hears the discipline of a father,
but a scoffer does not listen to a rebuke.
2 From the fruit of the mouth of a man, he shall eat what is good,
but the desire[a] of the treacherous, wrongdoing.
3 He who keeps his mouth guards his life;[b]
he who opens his lips, ruin belongs to him.
4 The soul[c] of the lazy craves, but there is nothing,
but the person of diligence is richly supplied.
5 The righteous hates a word of falsehood;
the wicked will bring shame and disgrace.[d]
6 Righteousness will guard the upright of way,
but wickedness will overthrow sin.
7 There is one who acts rich but has nothing;[e]
another who pretends to be poor but has wealth.
8 The ransom of the life of a man is his wealth,
but the poor does not receive a threat.
9 The light of the righteous will rejoice,
but the lamp of the wicked will die out.
10 Only by insolence is strife set up,
and wisdom is with those who take advice.
11 Wealth gained from haste[f] will dwindle,
but he who gathers little by little[g] will increase it.
12 Hope that is deferred makes the heart[h] sick,
but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
13 He who despises a word will bring destruction on himself,
but he who respects a commandment will be rewarded.
14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
in order to avoid the snares of death.
15 Good sense grants favor,
but the way of the faithless is coarse.
16 Anyone who is clever will act with intelligence,
but the fool will display folly.
17 A messenger of wickedness will fall into trouble,
but an envoy of the faithful brings healing.
18 Poverty and disgrace belong to him who ignores instruction,
but he who guards reproof will be honored.
19 A desire fulfilled[i] will be sweet to the soul,
but an abomination of fools is turning from evil.
20 Walk with the wise and be wise,
but as for the companion of fools, he will suffer harm.
21 Misfortune will pursue sinners,
but the righteous will be rewarded with prosperity.[j]
22 He who is good will leave an inheritance to his grandchildren,[k]
and stored up for the righteous is the wealth of a sinner.
23 There is much food in the field of the poor,
but it is swept away[l] by injustice.[m]
24 He who withholds his rod hates his child,
but he who loves him gives him[n] discipline.
25 The righteous eats to satisfy his life,[o]
but the belly of the wicked will lack.
