6 Do not stare at me because I am dark,
for the sun has gazed on me.
My mother’s sons were angry with me;(A)
they made me take care of the vineyards.(B)
I have not taken care of my own vineyard.
7 Tell me, you whom I love:(C)
Where do you pasture your sheep?(D)
Where do you let them rest at noon?(E)
Why should I be like one who veils herself[a]
beside the flocks of your companions?(F)

8 [b]If you do not know,
most beautiful of women,(G)
follow[c] the tracks of the flock,
and pasture your young goats
near the shepherds’ tents.

6 Do not stare at me because I am dark,
because I am darkened by the sun.
My mother’s sons were angry with me
and made me take care of the vineyards;(A)
my own vineyard I had to neglect.
7 Tell me, you whom I love,
where you graze your flock
and where you rest your sheep(B) at midday.
Why should I be like a veiled(C) woman
beside the flocks of your friends?

8 If you do not know, most beautiful of women,(D)
follow the tracks of the sheep
and graze your young goats
by the tents of the shepherds.
