Saúda-vos Paulo, servo de Jesus Cristo, escolhido por Deus para ser apóstolo, separado para pregar as boas novas de Deus, as quais já tinham sido prometidas por Deus, nas santas Escrituras, há muito tempo, através dos seus profetas. Estas boas novas são acerca de seu Filho, Jesus Cristo, nosso Senhor, o qual tomou uma forma humana ao nascer na descendência do rei David. E Jesus Cristo nosso Senhor foi declarado Filho de Deus quando Deus poderosamente o ressuscitou da morte por meio do Espírito Santo. Através de Cristo, Deus deu-nos o privilégio e a autoridade de anunciar aos gentios em toda a parte o que Deus fez por eles, para que possam crer e obedecer-lhe, trazendo glória ao seu nome. E vocês também fazem parte do número daqueles que são chamados para pertencer a Jesus Cristo.

A todos vocês que estão em Roma, a quem Deus ama e que foram chamados para fazer parte do número dos santos, que vos sejam concedidas a graça e a paz da parte de Deus nosso Pai e de Jesus Cristo nosso Senhor.

Paulo deseja visitar Roma

Antes de mais, gostaria de vos dizer como me sinto grato a Deus, através de Jesus Cristo, por todos vocês, porque a vossa fé se vai tornando conhecida em todo o mundo! Deus, a quem sirvo com todo o meu espírito, declarando aos outros as boas novas de seu Filho, é testemunha de quão frequentemente vos lembro 10 nas minhas constantes orações. Também peço a Deus que, se for a sua vontade, me apareça uma boa oportunidade de ir ver-vos. 11 Porque desejo visitar-vos para vos transmitir algum dom espiritual, de modo a ajudar-vos a ser fortes no Senhor, 12 para ao mesmo tempo ser também encorajado pela nossa fé comum.

13 Não quero que ignorem, irmãos, que já muitas vezes fiz planos para ir ter convosco, mas tenho sido impedido. Queria também obter no vosso meio os mesmos bons resultados que entre outros gentios. 14 Porque tenho uma dívida para com toda a gente, tanto gregos como bárbaros, tanto pessoas cultas como incultas. 15 Portanto, no que estiver ao meu alcance, estou pronto a ir também a Roma pregar-vos as boas novas.

16 Porque não me envergonho das boas novas de Cristo, pois são o poder de Deus para salvação de todos os que creem. Esta mensagem dirigiu-se primeiramente aos judeus, mas agora igualmente aos gregos. 17 Este evangelho revela-nos a justiça que Deus nos atribui. Esta justiça nasce e completa-se através da fé. Tal como está escrito: “O justo pela fé viverá.”[a]

A ira de Deus contra o pecado

18 Mas Deus mostra, dos céus, a sua ira contra todo o pecado e a injustiça dos homens que impedem a revelação da verdade pela sua perversidade. 19 Porque o que acerca de Deus se pode conhecer, eles sabem-no manifestamente, pois Deus lho manifestou. 20 Desde a criação do mundo que os homens entendem e claramente veem, através de tudo o que Deus fez, as suas qualidades invisíveis: o seu eterno poder e a sua natureza divina. Não terão, portanto, desculpa de não conhecer a Deus.

21 Pois ainda que tendo conhecido a Deus, não o glorificaram como Deus e nem sequer foram agradecidos. Antes começaram a formar ideias absurdas. O resultado foi que as suas mentes insensatas se tornaram obscuras. 22 Dizendo-se sábios, tornaram-se loucos. 23 E então, em vez de adorarem o Deus glorioso e eterno, fizeram para si próprios ídolos com a forma de homens mortais, de aves, de quadrúpedes e de répteis.

24 Por isso, Deus os abandonou a si mesmos, deixando-os entregar-se a toda a espécie de perversões dos seus instintos, fazendo até coisas indignas com os corpos uns dos outros. 25 Em vez de aceitarem a verdade de Deus, preferiram a mentira. Honraram e serviram coisas que são criadas em vez do próprio Criador, que é para sempre bendito! Amém!

26 Foi por isso que Deus se afastou deles e os deixou entregues a paixões infames. Até as mulheres mudaram o uso natural que Deus destinou ao seu corpo e entregaram-se a práticas sexuais entre si mesmas. 27 E os homens, deixando as relações sexuais normais com mulheres, inflamaram-se em paixões sensuais, homens com homens, recebendo em si mesmos o devido castigo pela sua perversão.

28 Visto terem achado inútil conhecer a Deus, ele deixou-os fazer tudo o que não convém e as suas mentes malignas pudessem imaginar. 29 As suas vidas encheram-se de todo o tipo de delitos, perversidade, ganância, maldade, inveja, assassínios, contendas, enganos, comportamentos perversos e intrigas. 30 Tornaram-se maldizentes, cheios de ódio contra Deus, arrogantes, orgulhosos, presunçosos, imaginando constantemente novas práticas de maldade, sem respeito pelo pai ou pela mãe; 31 são falhos de bom senso, infiéis à palavra dada, sem saber o que é a afeição natural, sem capacidade de ter misericórdia. 32 Conhecendo a justiça de Deus e o castigo de morte que as suas condutas merecem, continuaram na mesma, encorajando até outros a viver assim.

God promised this ·Good News [Gospel] ·long ago [beforehand; previously] through his prophets, as it is written in the Holy Scriptures. A Prayer of Thanks

First I want to say that I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because people everywhere in the world are talking about your faith. God, whom I serve ·with my whole heart [in/with my spirit] ·by telling [or for the sake of; L in] the ·Good News [Gospel] about his Son, ·knows [L is my witness] that I ·always [continually; never cease to] mention you 10 every time I pray. I pray that now at last ·if God wants it [by God’s will] I will ·be allowed to come [succeed in coming] to you. 11 I ·want very much [long] to see you, to ·give [impart to; or share with] you some spiritual gift to make you strong. 12 I mean that I want us to ·help each other [be mutually encouraged/comforted] ·with the faith we have [by each other’s faith]. ·Your faith will help me, and my faith will help you [L …both yours and mine]. 13 Brothers and sisters, I want you to know that I ·planned [intended] many times to come to you, but ·this has not been possible [L have been hindered/ unsuccessful until now]. 16 [L For] I am not ashamed of the ·Good News [Gospel], because it is the power God uses to save everyone who believes—to save the Jews first, and then to save ·Gentiles [L the Greeks; C here meaning anyone who is not Jewish; contrast v. 14]. 17 The ·Good News [Gospel] shows ·how God makes people right with himself [or God’s righteous character; L the righteousness of/from God]—·that it begins and ends with faith [or that advances from one believing person to the next; or that begins with God’s faithfulness and results in people’s faith; L from faith to faith]. As the Scripture says, “But ·those who are right with God will live by faith [or those made righteous through faith will live (eternally); Hab. 2:4].”

All People Have Sinned

18 [L For] God’s ·anger [wrath; retribution] is ·shown [being revealed] from heaven against all the ·evil [ungodly] and ·wrong [wicked; unrighteous] things people do. By their ·own evil lives [wickedness; unrighteousness] they ·hide [suppress] the truth. 19 God ·shows [reveals] his ·anger [wrath; retribution] because ·some knowledge of [what can be known about] him has been made ·clear [plain; evident] to them. Yes, God has ·shown himself [revealed/disclosed it] to them. 20 For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and ·all the things that make him God [his divine nature]—have been clearly ·seen [perceived], understood through what God has made. So people have no excuse. 21 They knew God, but they did not give glory to God or thank him. Their thinking became ·useless [futile; pointless]. Their ·foolish [ignorant; uncomprehending] ·minds [L hearts] were ·filled with darkness [darkened]. 22 They claimed to be wise, but they became fools. 23 They ·traded [exchanged] the glory of ·God who lives forever [the immortal/imperishable God] for the worship of ·idols [images] made to look like ·earthly [mortal; perishable] people, birds, animals, and reptiles.

Men did shameful things with other men, and in ·their bodies [L themselves] they received the ·punishment [recompense; due penalty] for ·those wrongs [their error].

28 [L And since/just as] People did not ·think it was important [consider it worthwhile; see fit] to ·have a true knowledge of [or acknowledge] God. So God ·abandoned them to [allowed them to pursue; gave them over to] ·their own worthless thinking [a depraved/corrupted mind] to do things they should not do. 29 They are filled with every kind of ·sin [unrighteousness; injustice], ·evil [wickedness], ·selfishness [greed], and ·hatred [evil; malice; depravity]. They are full of ·jealousy [envy], murder, ·fighting [strife; quarreling], ·lying [deceit; treachery], and ·thinking the worst about each other [spite; maliciousness]. They are gossips 30 and ·say evil things about each other [slanderers; backstabbers]. They hate God. They are ·rude [insolent; haughty] and ·conceited [proud; arrogant] and ·brag about themselves [boastful]. They invent ways of doing evil. They do not ·obey [respect] their parents. 31 They are ·foolish [senseless; undiscerning], they ·do not keep their promises [or are covenant-breakers], and they show no ·kindness [love; affection] or ·mercy [pity] to others. 32 They know God’s ·law says [righteous decree; just requirement] that those who live like this should die. But they themselves not only continue to do these evil things, they ·applaud [approve of; encourage] others who do them.

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle(A) and set apart(B) for the gospel of God(C) the gospel he promised beforehand(D) through his prophets(E) in the Holy Scriptures(F) regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life[a](G) was a descendant of David,(H) and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power[b](I) by his resurrection from the dead:(J) Jesus Christ our Lord.(K) Through him we received grace(L) and apostleship to call all the Gentiles(M) to the obedience that comes from[c] faith(N) for his name’s sake. Paul’s Longing to Visit Rome

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you,(S) because your faith is being reported all over the world.(T) God, whom I serve(U) in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness(V) how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times;(W) and I pray that now at last by God’s will(X) the way may be opened for me to come to you.(Y)

11 I long to see you(Z) so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift(AA) to make you strong— 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 13 I do not want you to be unaware,(AB) brothers and sisters,[d](AC) that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now)(AD) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

14 I am obligated(AE) both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.(AF)

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel,(AG) because it is the power of God(AH) that brings salvation to everyone who believes:(AI) first to the Jew,(AJ) then to the Gentile.(AK) 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed(AL)—a righteousness that is by faith(AM) from first to last,[e] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[f](AN)

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God(AO) is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.(AP) 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,(AQ) so that people are without excuse.(AR)

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.(AS) 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools(AT) 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images(AU) made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over(AV) in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.(AW) 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie,(AX) and worshiped and served created things(AY) rather than the Creator—who is forever praised.(AZ) Amen.(BA)

26 Because of this, God gave them over(BB) to shameful lusts.(BC) Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.(BD) 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.(BE)

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over(BF) to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,(BG) 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;(BH) 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love,(BI) no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death,(BJ) they not only continue to do these very things but also approve(BK) of those who practice them.
