Abimelech, koning van Sichem
9 Op een dag ging Gideons zoon Abimelech op bezoek bij zijn ooms van moederskant in Sichem. 2 ‘Wilt u met de burgers van Sichem gaan praten,’ vroeg hij hun, ‘en hun vragen wat zij beter vinden: dat ze door alle zeventig zonen van Gideon zullen worden geregeerd of slechts door één man, dat wil zeggen door mij, iemand van uw eigen vlees en bloed!’ 3 Zijn ooms legden de burgers van Sichem Abimelechs plan voor en deze kozen Abimelech, omdat zijn moeder uit Sichem kwam. 4 Zij gaven hem geld uit de tempel van de afgod Baäl-Berith. Dat gebruikte hij om een stel leeglopers en avonturiers te huren die met hem meegingen. 5 Hij nam hen mee naar zijn vaders huis in Ofra en daar vermoordden zij alle zeventig broers. Alleen de jongste broer Jotham ontsnapte aan de dood, omdat hij zich had verstopt. 6 Alle inwoners van Sichem en Bet-Millo kwamen toen naar de eik bij het monument in Sichem en maakten Abimelech koning.
7 Toen Jotham dit hoorde, klom hij op de berg Gerizim en schreeuwde de burgers van Sichem toe: ‘Als u wilt dat God u zegent, luister dan naar mij. 8 Lang geleden besloten de bomen een koning te kiezen. Eerst vroegen ze de olijfboom of hij koning wilde worden, maar hij weigerde. 9 “Zou ik ophouden olijfolie te produceren waar God en de mensen mij voor eren, om heen en weer te gaan wuiven boven de andere bomen?” vroeg hij. 10 Toen zeiden ze tegen de vijgenboom: “Wilt u onze koning zijn?” 11 Maar de vijgenboom weigerde ook. “Zou ik ophouden zoetigheid en lekkere vruchten te produceren, enkel en alleen om boven de andere bomen uit te steken?” vroeg hij. 12 Toen gingen ze naar de wijnstok: “U moet over ons regeren!” 13 Maar de wijnstok antwoordde: “Zou ik ophouden wijn te produceren die God en de mensen vrolijk maakt, uitsluitend om machtiger te worden dan alle andere bomen?” 14 Ten slotte wendden alle bomen zich tot de doornstruik. “U moet onze koning zijn!” riepen ze. 15 En de doornstruik antwoordde: “Als u mij werkelijk als koning wilt, ga dan in mijn schaduw zitten! Maar weigert u, dan zal er vuur uit mij komen dat de grote ceders van de Libanon zal verteren!” 16 Welnu, burgers van Sichem, bent u ervan overtuigd dat het goed was Abimelech koning te maken en dat u juist hebt gehandeld tegenover Gideon en zijn nakomelingen? 17 Want mijn vader heeft voor u gevochten en zijn leven in de waagschaal gesteld en u verlost uit de macht van de Midjanieten. 18 Toch komt u nu tegen hem in opstand en hebt zijn zeventig zonen op één steen gedood. U hebt Abimelech, de zoon van zijn bijvrouw, koning gemaakt, alleen omdat hij een volksgenoot van u is. 19 Als u zeker weet dat u juist hebt gehandeld tegenover Gideon en zijn nageslacht, wens ik u en Abimelech veel geluk met elkaar! 20 Maar als u niet eerlijk hebt gehandeld, dan hoop ik dat er vuur uit Abimelech zal komen en u zal vernietigen en dat er vuur uit u zal komen dat Abimelech zal vernietigen!’
21 Toen vluchtte Jotham naar Beër, waar hij uit angst voor zijn halfbroer Abimelech bleef wonen. 22,23 Nadat Abimelech drie jaar over Israël had geregeerd, stuurde God een boze geest die moeilijkheden veroorzaakte tussen Abimelech en de burgers van Sichem, waardoor zij hem ontrouw werden. 24 Tijdens de gebeurtenissen die volgden, kregen zowel Abimelech als de burgers van Sichem, die samen met hem de zeventig zonen van Gideon hadden vermoord, voor deze bloedschuld hun verdiende loon. 25 Dit ging als volgt: de burgers van Sichem legden hinderlagen voor Abimelech langs de weg die over de toppen van de bergen leidt. Terwijl zij wachtten tot Abimelech voorbij zou komen, beroofden zij iedereen die langs kwam. Maar iemand waarschuwde Abimelech voor hun samenzwering.
26 Intussen was Gaäl, de zoon van Ebed, met zijn broers naar Sichem getrokken en hij wist het vertrouwen van de inwoners van Sichem te winnen. 27 Tijdens het oogstfeest dat jaar, dat in de tempel van de plaatselijke god werd gevierd, vloeide de wijn rijkelijk en iedereen begon Abimelech te vervloeken. 28 ‘Wat stelt Abimelech eigenlijk voor?’ betoogde Gaäl. ‘Waarom zou hij onze koning zijn? Waarom zouden we hém dienen? Hij en zijn commandant Zebul zouden óns moeten dienen. Weg met Abimelech! 29 Maak mij uw koning en u zult eens zien wat er met Abimelech gebeurt! Ik zou tegen Abimelech zeggen: “Versterk uw leger en val maar aan!” ’
30 Toen stadscommandant Zebul hoorde wat Gaäl zei, werd hij razend. 31 Hij stuurde een koerier naar Abimelech in Aruma en meldde hem: ‘Ebeds zoon Gaäl en zijn broers zijn in Sichem gekomen en stoken de inwoners tegen u op. 32 Trek ʼs nachts met uw leger hierheen en ga op het veld in een hinderlaag liggen. 33 Bij zonsopgang moet u aanvallen. Als Gaäl en zijn mannen tegen u uittrekken, kunt u met hen doen wat u wilt.’ 34 Zo rukten Abimelech en zijn mannen ʼs nachts op. Zij splitsten zich in vier groepen, die zich verdekt opstelden. 35 Toen Gaäl de volgende morgen in de stadspoort stond, verlieten Abimelech en zijn mannen hun dekking en marcheerden in de richting van de stad. 36 Toen Gaäl hem zag naderen, zei hij tegen Zebul: ‘Kijk daar eens! Komen daar geen mensen van de berg af?’ ‘Welnee!’ antwoordde Zebul. ‘U ziet schaduwen voor mensen aan!’ 37 ‘Nee, kijk eens goed,’ zei Gaäl. ‘Ik weet zeker dat ik mensen hierheen zie komen. En er komt ook een groep over de weg langs de Waarzeggerseik.’ 38 Zebul keerde zich daarop triomfantelijk naar Gaäl. ‘Waar blijft u nu met uw grote mond?’ zei hij spottend. ‘Wie zei ook al weer: “Wat stelt Abimelech eigenlijk voor en waarom zou hij onze koning zijn?” Daar komen de mensen aan over wie u zo minachtend hebt gesproken! Vooruit, vecht maar tegen hen!’
39 Onder aanvoering van Gaäl vochten de mannen van Sichem tegen Abimelech. 40 Maar Gaäl werd verslagen en er vielen veel doden, de lijken lagen verspreid over de weg tot bij de stadspoort. 41 Abimelech woonde in die tijd in Aruma en daarom verdreef Zebul Gaäl en zijn broers uit Sichem, zij mochten niet langer in de stad blijven. 42 De volgende dag trokken de mannen van Sichem weer ten strijde, maar iemand had Abimelech van hun plannen op de hoogte gebracht. 43 Daarom verdeelde hij zijn leger in drie groepen die zich verdekt opstelden in het veld. Toen de mannen van Sichem uitrukten om Abimelech aan te vallen, sprongen Abimelech en zijn mannen uit hun hinderlaag tevoorschijn en sloegen hen uiteen. 44 Abimelech en zijn groep snelden naar de stadspoort om de mannen van Sichem de terugtocht af te snijden, terwijl de twee andere groepen degenen die al buiten de stad waren, neersloegen. 45 Er moest de hele dag worden gevochten voordat Abimelech eindelijk de stad kon innemen. Toen doodde hij de hele bevolking en maakte de stad met de grond gelijk. Zij strooiden overal zout.
46 De burgers van het nabijgelegen Sichem-Toren hoorden wat er was gebeurd en zochten hun toevlucht in de kelders van de tempel van de afgod Berith. 47,48 Toen Abimelech dit hoorde, leidde hij zijn troepen naar de berg Zalmon, begon daar met een bijl boomtakken af te kappen en legde de takkenbos op zijn schouder. ‘Jullie hebben gezien wat ik deed,’ zei hij tegen zijn mannen. ‘Doe nu vlug hetzelfde.’ 49 Al zijn mannen hakten snel een bos takken af en droegen die naar de stad. Daar gooiden ze alle takken op de kelders en staken die in brand. Zo kwamen alle mensen die binnen zaten, om, ongeveer duizend mannen en vrouwen.
50 Daarna viel Abimelech de stad Tebez aan en nam die in. 51 Midden in de stad stond een versterkte toren en alle inwoners vluchtten daarin. Ze deden de deuren achter zich op slot en klommen op het platte dak om uit te kijken. 52 Abimelech drong door tot de ingang van de toren en stond op het punt de toren in brand te steken, 53 toen een vrouw de bovenste van een paar molenstenen van het dak naar beneden gooide, boven op Abimelechs hoofd! Zijn hele schedel werd verbrijzeld. 54 ‘Gauw, gauw,’ kreunde hij tegen zijn wapendrager, ‘Dood mij! Laat nooit iemand kunnen zeggen dat Abimelech door een vrouw is gedood!’ Toen doorstak de wapendrager hem met zijn zwaard en Abimelech stierf.
55 Toen zijn mannen zagen dat hun aanvoerder dood was, gaven ze de strijd op en gingen naar huis. 56,57 Zo strafte God zowel Abimelech als de burgers van Sichem voor de moord op Gideons zeventig zonen. Zo werd ook de vervloeking van Gideons zoon Jotham werkelijkheid.

Abimelech Attempts to Become King
9 And Abimelech son of Jerub-Baal went to Shechem, to the relatives of his mother, and he said to them and to the house of his mother’s father, 2 “Speak to[a] the lords of Shechem, ‘What is better for you, that seventy men all from the sons of Jerub-Baal rule over you, or that one man rules over you?’ Remember that I am your bone and your flesh.” 3 And his mother’s relatives spoke all these words concerning him to[b] all the lords of Shechem; and they supported Abimelech,[c] for they said, “He is our relative.”[d] 4 And they gave to him seventy pieces of silver from the temple[e] of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hired with them[f] worthless and reckless men, and they followed him.[g] 5 And he went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and he killed his brothers, the sons of Jerub-Baal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerub-Baal survived, because he hid himself. 6 All the lords of Shechem and Beth-Millo gathered, and they went and made Abimelech as king, near the oak[h] of the pillar that is at Shechem.
7 And they told Jotham, and he went up and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and he cried out loud[i] and said to them, “Listen to me, lords of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.
8 “The trees went certainly,
to anoint a king over themselves.
And they said to the olive tree,
‘Rule over us.’
9 And the olive tree replied,
‘Should I stop producing my oil,
which by me gods and men are honored,
to go sway over the trees?’
10 Then the trees said to the fig tree,
‘You, come rule over us.’
11 But the fig tree said to them,
‘Should I stop producing my sweetness,
and my good crop,
to go sway over the trees?’
12 And the trees said to the vine,
‘You, come rule over us.’
13 But the vine said to them,
‘Should I stop producing my wine
that makes the gods and men happy,
to go sway over the trees?’
14 So all the trees said to the thornbush,
‘You, come rule over us.’
15 And the thornbush said to the trees,
‘If in good faith[j] you are anointing
me as king over you,
then come and take refuge in my shade;
if not, may fire go out from the thornbush
and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’
16 “So then, if you have acted in good faith[k] and sincerity in making Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerub-Baal and his house, and have dealt with him according to his accomplishments[l]— 17 for my father fought and risked his life[m] for you and delivered you from the hand of Midian; 18 but today you have risen against the house of my father and killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and you have made Abimelech, the son of his slave woman, a king over the lords of Shechem, because he is your relative[n]— 19 if you have acted in good faith[o] and sincerity with Jerub-Baal and his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. 20 But if not, let a fire come out from Abimelech and let it devour the lords of Shechem and Beth-Millo; and let a fire come out from the lords of Shechem, and from Beth-Millo, and let it devour Abimelech.” 21 And Jotham escaped and fled, and went to Beer; he remained there because of Abimelech his brother.
The Downfall of Shechem and Abimelech
22 Abimelech ruled over Israel three years. 23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the lords of Shechem, and the lords of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, 24 so that the violence done to the seventy brothers of Abimelech would be avenged and their blood be placed on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the lords of Shechem, who helped[p] to kill his brothers. 25 And the lords of Shechem set for him ambushes on the top of the mountains, and they robbed all who passed by them along the road; and it was reported to Abimelech.
26 And Gaal son of Ebel and his relatives came, and they crossed over into Shechem, and the lords of Shechem gave him confidence.[q] 27 They went out into the field and harvested their vineyards and trod them, and they held a festival.[r] And they went into the temple[s] of their god, and they ate and drank and cursed Abimelech. 28 Then Gaal son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerub-Baal, and is not Zebul his chief officer?[t] Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem. Why should we serve him?[u] 29 If only this people were in my command![v] Then I would remove Abimelech, and I would have said,[w] ‘Increase your army and come out!’”
30 When Zebul the commander of the city heard the words of Gaal son of Ebed, he became angry,[x] 31 and he sent messengers to Abimelech in Tormah, saying, “Look, Gaal son of Ebed and his relatives are coming to Shechem, and they are stirring up the city against you. 32 So then, get up by night, you and the army that is with you, and lie in ambush in the field. 33 And in the morning at sunrise, get up and rush the city; and look, when he and the troops who are with him come out to you, you must act according to whatever opportunity offers itself.[y]
34 So Abimelech and all the army that was with him got up by night, and they lay in ambush against Shechem in four divisions.[z] 35 Gaal son of Ebed went out and stood at the entrance of the city gate, and Abimelech and the army that was with him got up from the ambush. 36 When Gaal saw the army, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the top of the mountains!” And Zebul said to him, “The shadows of the mountains look like people to you.”[aa] 37 And Gaal spoke again[ab] and said, “Look, people are coming down from Tabbur-erez, and one division[ac] is coming from the direction of Elon-meonenim.”[ad] 38 And Zebul said to him, “Where then is your boast,[ae] you who said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Is this not the army that you rejected? Please, go out now and fight against them.”[af] 39 So Gaal went out before the lords of Shechem and fought against Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him; many fell slain up to the entrance of the gate. 41 So Abimelech resided at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives[ag] from living in Shechem.
42 On the next day the people went out to the field; and it was reported to Abimelech, 43 so he took the army and divided them into three divisions,[ah] and he laid an ambush in the field. And he saw the people were coming out from the city, and he arose against them and killed them. 44 Then Abimelech and the divisions[ai] that were with him dashed out and stood at the entrance of the city gate, and the two divisions dashed out against all who were in the field, and they killed them. 45 Abimelech fought against the city all that day, and he captured the city and killed the people that were in it; then he broke down the city and sowed it with salt.
46 When all the lords of the tower of Shechem heard, they went to the vault[aj] of the temple[ak] of El-Berith. 47 It was told to Abimelech that all the lords of the tower of Shechem had gathered. 48 So Abimelech went up Mount Zalmon, he and all his army that were with him, and Abimelech took the ax[al] in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood, and he lifted it and put it on his shoulder. And he said to the army that was with him, “What you have seen me do, quickly do also.” 49 So the whole army cut down each one branch for himself and followed Abimelech, and they put them against the vault[am] and set the vault ablaze with fire on those inside, so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died, about a thousand men and women.
50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and he encamped against Thebez and captured it. 51 But there was a strong tower in the middle of the city, and all the men, women, and lords of the city fled there and shut themselves in; and they went up to the roof of the tower. 52 Abimelech came up to the tower and fought against it, and he came near the entrance of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 But a certain woman[an] threw an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and cracked open his skull. 54 He called quickly to the young man carrying his weapons, and he said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, so that they will not say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So the young man[ao] stabbed him, and he died. 55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, each one went to his home.[ap] 56 So God repaid[aq] the wickedness[ar] that Abimelech committed against his father by killing his seventy brothers. 57 And God also repaid all the wickedness[as] of the men of Shechem on their heads, and the curse of Jotham son of Jerub-Baal fell on them.

9 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother's brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,
2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
3 And his mother's brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
4 And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.
5 And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.
6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.
7 And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.
8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
9 But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
10 And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.
11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.
13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.
15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.
16 Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;
17 (For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:
18 And ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)
19 If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:
20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.
21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22 When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,
23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.
25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.
26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.
27 And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.
28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?
29 And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.
30 And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.
31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.
32 Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:
33 And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.
34 And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.
36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
37 And Gaal spake again, and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.
38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.
39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.
41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.
42 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.
43 And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.
44 And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.
45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.
46 And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.
47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.
49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
50 Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.
52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to brake his skull.
54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.
56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
