Joseph Interprets

¹⁴ Then Pharaoh sent word and ^(A)called for Joseph, and they ^(B)hurriedly brought him out of the dungeon; and when he had shaved himself and changed his clothes, he came to Pharaoh. ¹⁵ Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, ^(C)but no one can interpret it; and ^(D)I have heard ^[a]it said about you, that ^[b]when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” ¹⁶ Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “^[c](E)It has nothing to do with me; ^(F)God will ^[d]give Pharaoh an answer for his own good.” ¹⁷ So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream, there I was, standing on the bank of the Nile; ¹⁸ and behold, seven cows, ^[e]fat and fine-looking came up out of the Nile, and they grazed in the marsh grass. ¹⁹ Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ^[f]ugly and ^[g]thin, such as I had never seen for ^[h]ugliness in all the land of Egypt; ²⁰ and the thin and ugly cows ate the first seven fat cows. ²¹ Yet when they had ^[i]devoured them, it could not be ^[j]detected that they had ^[k]devoured them, ^[l]for they were just as ugly as ^[m]before. Then I awoke. ²² I saw also in my dream, and behold, seven ears of grain, full and good, came up on a single stalk; ²³ and behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind sprouted up after them; ²⁴ and the thin ears swallowed the seven good ears. Then ^(G)I told it to the soothsayer priests, but there was no one who could explain it to me.”

²⁵ And Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Pharaoh’s ^[n]dreams are one and the same; ^(H)God has told to Pharaoh what He is about to do. ²⁶ The seven good cows are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years; the ^[o]dreams are one and the same. ²⁷ The seven thin and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven thin ears scorched by the east wind ^(I)will be seven years of famine. ^28 [p]It is as I have spoken to Pharaoh: ^(J)God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do. ²⁹ Behold, ^(K)seven years of great abundance are coming in all the land of Egypt; ³⁰ and after them ^(L)seven years of famine will ^[q]come, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine will ^[r]ravage the land. ³¹ So the abundance will be unknown in the land because of that subsequent famine; for it will be very severe. ³² Now as for the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it means that ^(M)the matter is confirmed by God, and God will quickly bring it about. ³³ So now let Pharaoh look for a man ^(N)discerning and wise, and appoint him over the land of Egypt. ³⁴ Let Pharaoh take action to appoint overseers ^[s]in charge of the land, and let him take a fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt as a tax in the seven years of abundance. ³⁵ Then have them ^(O)collect all the food of these good years that are coming, and store up the grain for food in the cities under Pharaoh’s authority, and have them guard it. ³⁶ Let the food be used as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which will occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land will not perish during the famine.”

³⁷ Now the ^[t]proposal seemed good ^[u]to Pharaoh and ^[v]to all his servants.

Joseph Is Made a Ruler of Egypt

³⁸ Then Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, ^(P)in whom there is a divine spirit?” ³⁹ So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has informed you of all this, there is no one as ^(Q)discerning and wise as you are. ^40 (R)You shall be ^[w]in charge of my house, and all my people shall ^[x]be obedient to you; only regarding the throne will I be greater than you.” ⁴¹ Pharaoh also said to Joseph, “See, I have placed you ^(S)over all the land of Egypt.” ⁴² Then Pharaoh ^(T)took off his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen, and ^(U)put the gold necklace around his neck. ⁴³ And he had him ride in ^[y]his second chariot; and they proclaimed ahead of him, “^[z]Bow the knee!” And he placed him over all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁴ Moreover, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Though I am Pharaoh, yet ^(V)without ^[aa]your permission no one shall raise his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.” ⁴⁵ Then Pharaoh named Joseph ^[ab]Zaphenath-paneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of ^[ac](W)On, to be his wife. And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.

³ Or do you not know that all of us who have been ^(A)baptized into ^(B)Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? ⁴ Therefore we have been ^(C)buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was ^(D)raised from the dead through the ^(E)glory of the Father, so we too may walk in ^(F)newness of life. ⁵ For ^(G)if we have become ^[a]united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be ^[b]in the likeness of His resurrection, ⁶ knowing this, that our ^(H)old ^[c]self was ^(I)crucified with Him, in order that our ^(J)body of sin might be ^[d]done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; ⁷ for ^(K)the one who has died is ^[e]freed from sin.

⁸ Now ^(L)if we have died with Christ, we believe that ^(M)we shall also live with Him, ⁹ knowing that Christ, having been ^(N)raised from the dead, ^[f]is never to die again; ^(O)death no longer is master over Him. ¹⁰ For ^[g]the death that He died, He died to sin once for all time; but ^[h]the life that He lives, He lives to ^[i]God. ¹¹ So you too, consider yourselves to be ^(P)dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

¹² Therefore sin is not to ^(Q)reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, ¹³ and do not go on ^(R)presenting ^[j]the parts of your body to sin as ^[k]instruments of unrighteousness; but ^(S)present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and ^[l]your body’s parts as ^[m]instruments of righteousness for God. ¹⁴ For ^(T)sin shall not ^(U)be master over you, for ^(V)you are not under ^[n]the Law but ^(W)under grace.

¹⁹ Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(A)the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever ^[a]the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way. ^20 (B)For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him ^(C)greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. ²¹ For just as the Father raises the dead and ^(D)gives them life, so ^(E)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. ²² For not even the Father judges anyone, but ^(F)He has given all judgment to the Son, ²³ so that all will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. ^(G)The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

²⁴ “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and ^(H)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and ^(I)does not come into judgment, but has ^(J)passed out of death into life.
