BOOK 3

The Nearness of God Is My Good

A Psalm of Asaph.

73 Surely God is (A)good to Israel,
To those who are (B)pure in heart!
But as for me, (C)my feet had almost stumbled,
My steps [a]had almost slipped.
For I was (D)envious of the boastful,
I saw the (E)peace of the wicked.
For there are no pains in their death,
And their [b]body is fat.
They are (F)not [c]in trouble as other [d]men,
And they are not (G)stricken along with the rest of mankind.
Therefore lofty pride is (H)their necklace;
The (I)garment of violence covers them.
Their eye [e]bulges from (J)fatness;
The delusions of their heart overflow.
They (K)scoff and [f]wickedly speak of oppression;
They (L)speak from on high.
They have (M)set their mouth [g]against the heavens,
And their tongue goes through the earth.

10 Therefore [h]his people return here, to his place,
And waters of (N)fullness are [i]drunk by them.
11 They say, “(O)How does God know?
And is there knowledge with the Most High?”
12 Behold, (P)these are the wicked;
And always (Q)at ease, they have increased in wealth.
13 Surely (R)in vain I have [j]kept my heart pure
And (S)washed my hands in innocence;
14 For I have been stricken (T)all day long
And [k](U)reproved every morning.

15 If I had said, “I will recount thus,”
Behold, I would have betrayed the (V)generation of Your children.
16 When I (W)gave thought to know this,
It was trouble in my sight
17 Until I came into the [l](X)sanctuary of God;
Then I understood their (Y)end.
18 Surely You set them in (Z)slippery places;
You cause them to fall to [m](AA)destruction.
19 How they become (AB)desolate in a moment!
They are completely swept away by (AC)terrors!
20 Like a (AD)dream when one awakes,
O Lord, when (AE)aroused, You will (AF)despise their [n]form.

21 When my (AG)heart was embittered
And I was (AH)pierced [o]within,
22 Then I was (AI)senseless and ignorant;
I was like [p]an (AJ)animal [q]before You.
23 Nevertheless (AK)I am continually with You;
You have taken hold of my right hand.
24 With Your counsel You will (AL)lead me,
And afterward (AM)take me [r]in glory.

25 (AN)Whom have I in heaven but You?
And [s]besides You, I desire nothing on earth.
26 My (AO)flesh and my heart fail,
But God is the rock of my heart and my (AP)portion forever.
27 For, behold, (AQ)those who are far from You will (AR)perish;
You have [t]destroyed everyone who [u](AS)is unfaithful to You.
28 But as for me, (AT)the nearness of God is my good;
I have set Lord Yahweh as my (AU)refuge,
That I may (AV)recount all Your works.

Yet God Is My King

A [v]Maskil of Asaph.

74 Why, O God? Have You (AW)rejected us forever?
Why does Your anger (AX)smoke against the (AY)sheep of Your [w]pasture?
Remember Your congregation, which You have (AZ)purchased of old,
Which You have (BA)redeemed to be the (BB)tribe of Your inheritance;
And this Mount (BC)Zion, where You have dwelt.
Lift up Your steps toward the (BD)perpetual ruins;
The enemy (BE)has damaged everything within the sanctuary.
Your adversaries have (BF)roared in the midst of Your meeting place;
They have set up their (BG)own signs (BH)for signs.
Each seems like one who lifts up
[x]An (BI)axe against the undergrowth of trees.
And now its (BJ)carved work altogether
They smash with hatchet and [y]hammers.
They have (BK)set Your sanctuary on fire;
By bringing it to the ground, they have (BL)defiled the dwelling place of Your name.
They (BM)said in their heart, “Let us [z]completely [aa]subdue them.”
They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
We do not see our (BN)signs;
There is (BO)no longer any prophet,
Nor is there any among us who knows (BP)how long.
10 How long, O God, will the adversary (BQ)reproach?
Will the enemy (BR)spurn Your name forever?
11 Why (BS)do You turn back Your hand, even Your right hand?
From within Your bosom, (BT)destroy them!

12 Yet God is (BU)my King from of old,
Who works deeds of [ab]salvation in the midst of the earth.
13 You (BV)divided the sea by Your strength;
You (BW)broke the heads of the (BX)sea monsters [ac]in the waters.
14 You crushed the heads of [ad](BY)Leviathan;
You gave him as food for the [ae]creatures (BZ)of the desert.
15 [af]You (CA)split open spring and river;
[ag]You (CB)dried up ever-flowing rivers.
16 Yours is the day, Yours also is the night;
[ah]You have (CC)established the [ai]light and the sun.
17 [aj]You have (CD)caused all the boundaries of the earth to stand firm;
[ak]You have formed (CE)summer and winter.

18 Remember this, O Yahweh, that the enemy has (CF)reproached,
And a (CG)wickedly foolish people has spurned Your name.
19 Do not deliver the soul of Your (CH)turtledove to the wild beast;
(CI)Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever.
20 Look to the (CJ)covenant;
For the (CK)dark places of the land are full of the haunts of violence.
21 Let not the (CL)oppressed return dishonored;
Let the (CM)afflicted and needy praise Your name.

22 Arise, O God, and (CN)plead Your own cause;
Remember [al]how the (CO)wicked fool reproaches You all day long.
23 Do not forget the voice of Your (CP)adversaries,
The (CQ)rumbling of those who rise against You which ascends continually.

God Judges with Equity

For the choir director. [am]Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph. [an]A Song.

75 We (CR)give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks,
For Your name is (CS)near;
Men recount (CT)Your wondrous deeds.
“For I select an (CU)appointed time,
It is I who (CV)judge with equity.
The (CW)earth and all who dwell in it [ao]melt;
It is I who have firmly set its (CX)pillars. [ap]Selah.
I said to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
And to the wicked, ‘(CY)Do not raise up the horn;
Do not raise up your horn on high,
(CZ)Nor speak with insolent [aq]pride.’”

For one’s rising up does not come from the east, nor from the west,
And not from the [ar](DA)desert;
But (DB)God is the Judge;
He (DC)puts down one and raises up another.
For a (DD)cup is in the hand of Yahweh, and the wine foams;
It is (DE)full of His mixture, and He pours from this;
Surely all the wicked of the earth must drain and (DF)drink down its dregs.

But as for me, I will (DG)declare it forever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 And all the (DH)horns of the wicked I will cut off,
But (DI)the horns of the righteous will be raised up.

God’s Name Is Great in Israel

For the choir director. With stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.

76 God is (DJ)known in Judah;
His name is (DK)great in Israel.
So His [as](DL)tabernacle is in (DM)Salem;
His (DN)dwelling place is in Zion.
There He (DO)broke the [at]flaming arrows,
The shield and the sword and the battle. [au]Selah.

You are shining,
Majestic from the mountains of prey.
The (DP)stouthearted were plundered,
[av]They sank into sleep;
And none of the [aw]warriors could use his hands.
At Your (DQ)rebuke, O God of Jacob,
Both (DR)chariot rider and horse slumbered into a deep sleep.
But You, You are [ax](DS)fearsome;
And (DT)who can stand in Your presence when once [ay]You are angry?

You made Your cause to be heard from heaven;
The earth (DU)feared and was quiet
When God (DV)arose to judgment,
To save all the humble of the earth. Selah.
10 For the [az](DW)wrath of man shall praise You;
With a remnant of wrath You will gird Yourself.

11 (DX)Make vows to Yahweh your God and (DY)pay them;
Let all who are around Him (DZ)bring gifts to the Fearsome One.
12 He will cut off the spirit of princes;
He is [ba](EA)feared by the kings of the earth.
