Psalm 79
1 Een lied van Asaf.
God, mensen van een ander volk zijn uw land binnen gedrongen.[a]
Ze hebben uw heilige tempel verwoest.
Ze hebben Jeruzalem veranderd in een puinhoop.
2 Ze hebben uw dienaren gedood.
Hun lijken zijn blijven liggen als voer voor de vogels en de wilde dieren.
3 Ze hebben rondom Jeruzalem het bloed laten stromen als water.
Niemand begroef de lijken.
4 De landen rondom ons lachen ons uit.
De volken die om ons heen wonen, maken grappen over ons.
5 Hoelang zal dit nog duren, Heer?
Wilt U voor altijd kwaad op ons blijven?
Duurt uw straf voor altijd?
6 Koel uw woede liever op de volken die U niet kennen,
op de koninkrijken die U niet aanbidden.
7 Want ze hebben het volk van Jakob vernietigd
en zijn prachtige land verwoest.
8 Straf ons niet voor wat onze voorouders hebben gedaan.
Heb medelijden met ons en vergeef ons!
Want we zijn er vreselijk aan toe.
9 Help ons, God, vanwege uw eigen eer.
Alleen U kan ons redden.
Vergeef ons en red ons, omdat U bent wie U bent.
10 Waarom zouden de andere volken zeggen:
"Waar is hun God dan?"
Laat hun zien, Heer, dat U wraak neemt
voor de dood van uw dienaren.
11 Hoor toch hoe de gevangenen[b] zuchten!
U bent machtig, Heer, red ons alstublieft!
We staan op de rand van de dood.
12 Straf onze vijanden zevenvoudig!
Want ze hebben U vreselijk beledigd, Heer.
13 Dan zullen we U voor altijd prijzen,
wij, uw volk, de schapen die U hoedt.
Door de eeuwen heen zullen we over uw heldendaden blijven vertellen.

- Psalmen 79:1 Eerst was het noordelijk deel van Israël veroverd door de koning van Assur. Later werd ook het zuidelijk deel van Israël, het koninkrijk Juda, veroverd. Dat gebeurde door de koning van Babel. Hij verwoestte Jeruzalem en roofde de tempel leeg. Lees 2 Koningen 25:8-15.
- Psalmen 79:11 Bedoeld worden de mensen die door de koning van Babel waren meegenomen naar zijn land. Daar moesten ze voortaan wonen en werken.

亚萨的诗。
79 上帝啊，
外族人侵占你的产业，
玷污你的圣殿，
使耶路撒冷沦为废墟。
2 他们把你仆人的尸体喂飞鸟，
把你忠心子民的尸体给野兽吃，
3 使耶路撒冷周围血流成河，
尸体无人埋葬。
4 我们成了列国羞辱的对象，
周围的人都嗤笑、讥讽我们。
5 耶和华啊，你向我们发怒，
要到何时呢？
难道要到永远吗？
你的怒火要烧到何时呢？
6 求你把烈怒撒向那些不承认你的列邦，
撒向那些不求告你的列国。
7 因为他们吞噬了雅各，
摧毁了他的家园。
8 求你不要向我们追讨我们祖先的罪，
愿你快快地怜悯我们，
因为我们已经落入绝望中。
9 拯救我们的上帝啊，
求你为了自己荣耀的名而帮助我们，
为你名的缘故拯救我们，
赦免我们的罪。
10 为何让列邦说：
“他们的上帝在哪里？”
求你让我们亲眼看见，
也让列邦都知道，
你为自己被害的子民申冤。
11 求你垂听被囚之人的哀叹，
求你用大能的臂膀留住死囚的性命。
12 主啊，我们的邻邦羞辱你，
求你以七倍的羞辱来报应他们。
13 这样，你的子民，你草场上的羊必永远称谢你，世代称颂你。

A Psalm of Asaph.
1 ¶ O God, the Gentiles are come into thine inheritance; they have defiled the temple of thy holiness; they have laid Jerusalem on heaps.
2 The dead bodies of thy slaves they have given to be food unto the fowls of the heavens, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
3 They have shed their blood like water round about Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them.
4 We are reproached by our neighbours, scorned, and derided by those that are round about us.
5 How long, LORD? wilt thou be angry for ever? shall thy jealousy burn like fire?
6 ¶ Pour out thy wrath upon the Gentiles that do not know thee and upon the kingdoms that do not call upon thy name.
7 For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his dwelling place.
8 O remember not against us former iniquities; let thy tender mercies speedily meet us on the way, for we are very poor.
9 Help us, O God, our saving health, for the honor of thy name and deliver us and purge away our sins, for thy name’s sake.
10 Why should the Gentiles say, Where is their God? let him be known among the Gentiles in our sight by the revenging of the blood of thy slaves which is shed.
11 Let the sighing of the prisoners come before thee; according to the greatness of thy power preserve those that are appointed to die
12 and render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, with which they have reproached thee, O Lord.
13 So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: from generation to generation we will sing thy praises.

A psalm of Asaph.
1 O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;(A)
they have defiled(B) your holy temple,
they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.(C)
2 They have left the dead bodies of your servants
as food for the birds of the sky,(D)
the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.(E)
3 They have poured out blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there is no one to bury(F) the dead.(G)
4 We are objects of contempt to our neighbors,
of scorn(H) and derision to those around us.(I)
5 How long,(J) Lord? Will you be angry(K) forever?
How long will your jealousy burn like fire?(L)
6 Pour out your wrath(M) on the nations
that do not acknowledge(N) you,
on the kingdoms
that do not call on your name;(O)
7 for they have devoured(P) Jacob
and devastated his homeland.
8 Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;(Q)
may your mercy come quickly to meet us,
for we are in desperate need.(R)
9 Help us,(S) God our Savior,
for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins
for your name’s sake.(T)
10 Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”(U)
Before our eyes, make known among the nations
that you avenge(V) the outpoured blood(W) of your servants.
11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you;
with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.
12 Pay back into the laps(X) of our neighbors seven times(Y)
the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord.
13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture,(Z)
will praise you forever;(AA)
from generation to generation
we will proclaim your praise.
