90 (0) A prayer of Moshe the man of God:
(1) Adonai, you have been our dwelling place
in every generation.
2 Before the mountains were born,
before you had formed the earth and the world,
from eternity past to eternity future
you are God.
3 You bring frail mortals to the point of being crushed,
then say, “People, repent!”
4 For from your viewpoint a thousand years
are merely like yesterday or a night watch.
5 When you sweep them away, they become like sleep;
by morning they are like growing grass,
6 growing and flowering in the morning,
but by evening cut down and dried up.
7 For we are destroyed by your anger,
overwhelmed by your wrath.
8 You have placed our faults before you,
our secret sins in the full light of your presence.
9 All our days ebb away under your wrath;
our years die away like a sigh.
10 The span of our life is seventy years,
or if we are strong, eighty;
yet at best it is toil and sorrow,
over in a moment, and then we are gone.
11 Who grasps the power of your anger and wrath
to the degree that the fear due you should inspire?
12 So teach us to count our days,
so that we will become wise.
13 Return, Adonai! How long must it go on?
Take pity on your servants!
14 Fill us at daybreak with your love,
so that we can sing for joy as long as we live.
15 Let our joy last as long as the time you made us suffer,
for as many years as we experienced trouble.
16 Show your deeds to your servants
and your glory to their children.
17 May the favor of Adonai our God be on us,
prosper for us all the work that we do —
yes, prosper the work that we do.

Ist denn alles vergeblich?
90 Ein Gebet von Mose, dem Mann Gottes.
Herr, solange es Menschen gibt, bist du unsere Zuflucht!
2 Ja, bevor die Berge geboren wurden,
noch bevor Erde und Weltall unter Wehen entstanden,
warst du, o Gott, schon da. Du bist ohne Anfang und Ende.
3 Du lässt den Menschen wieder zu Staub werden.
»Kehr zurück!«, sprichst du zu ihm.
4 Tausend Jahre sind für dich wie ein einziger Tag,
der doch im Flug vergangen ist,
kurz wie ein paar Stunden Schlaf.
5 Du reißt die Menschen hinweg,
sie verschwinden so schnell wie ein Traum nach dem Erwachen.
Sie vergehen wie das Gras:
6 Morgens sprießt es und blüht auf,
doch schon am Abend welkt und verdorrt es im heißen Wüstenwind.
7 Ja, durch deinen Zorn vergehen wir,
schnell ist es mit uns zu Ende!
8 Unsere Schuld liegt offen vor dir,
auch unsere geheimsten Verfehlungen bringst du ans Licht.
9 Dein Zorn lässt unser Leben verrinnen –
schnell wie ein kurzer Seufzer ist es vorbei!
10 Unser Leben dauert siebzig, vielleicht sogar achtzig Jahre.
Doch alles, worauf wir stolz sind,
ist nur Mühe, viel Lärm um nichts!
Wie schnell eilen die Jahre vorüber!
Wie rasch schwinden wir dahin!
11 Doch wer kann begreifen, wie gewaltig dein Zorn ist?
Wer fürchtet sich schon davor?
12 Mach uns bewusst, wie kurz das Leben ist,
damit wir unsere Tage weise nutzen!
13 Herr, wende dich uns wieder zu!
Wie lange soll dein Zorn noch dauern?
Hab Erbarmen mit uns, wir sind doch deine Diener!
14 Schenke uns deine Liebe jeden Morgen neu!
Dann können wir singen und uns freuen, solange wir leben!
15 So viele Jahre litten wir unter Not und Bedrückung;
lass uns nun ebenso viele Jahre Freude erleben!
16 Zeige uns, wie machtvoll du eingreifst;
auch unsere Kinder sollen deine mächtigen Taten sehen!
17 Herr, unser Gott! Zeige uns deine Güte!
Lass unsere Mühe nicht vergeblich sein!
Ja, lass unsere Arbeit Früchte tragen!

3 You (E)turn mortals back into dust
And say, “Return, you sons of mankind.”
4 For (F)a thousand years in Your sight
Are like (G)yesterday when it passes by,
[d]Or like a (H)watch in the night.
5 You (I)have [e]swept them away like a flood, they [f](J)fall asleep;
In the morning they are like (K)grass that [g]sprouts anew.
6 In the morning it (L)flourishes and [h]sprouts anew;
Toward evening it (M)wilts and (N)withers away.
7 For we have been (O)consumed by Your anger,
And we have been terrified by Your wrath.
8 You have (P)placed our guilty deeds before You,
Our (Q)hidden sins in the light of Your presence.
9 For (R)all our days have dwindled away in Your fury;
We have finished our years like a [i]sigh.
10 As for the days of our [j]life, [k]they contain seventy years,
Or if due to strength, (S)eighty years,
Yet their pride is only (T)trouble and tragedy;
For it quickly passes, and we (U)disappear.
11 Who [l]understands the (V)power of Your anger
And Your fury, according to the (W)fear [m]that is due You?
12 So (X)teach us to number our days,
That we may [n](Y)present to You a heart of wisdom.
13 Do (Z)return, Lord; (AA)how long will it be?
And [o]be (AB)sorry for Your servants.
14 (AC)Satisfy us in the morning with Your graciousness,
That we may (AD)sing for joy and rejoice all our days.
15 (AE)Make us glad [p]according to the days You have afflicted us,
And the (AF)years we have seen [q]evil.
16 Let Your (AG)work appear to Your servants
And Your (AH)majesty [r]to their children.
17 May the (AI)kindness of the Lord our God be upon us;
And [s](AJ)confirm for us the work of our hands;
Yes, [t]confirm the work of our hands.
