Psalm 56^[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam.^[b] When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.

⁵ In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves^(A) to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility^(B) toward one another, because,

⁶ Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.^{(D) 7} Cast all your anxiety on him^(E) because he cares for you.^(F)

⁸ Be alert and of sober mind.^(G) Your enemy the devil prowls around^(H) like a roaring lion^(I) looking for someone to devour. ⁹ Resist him,^(J) standing firm in the faith,^(K) because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.^(L)

¹⁰ And the God of all grace, who called you^(M) to his eternal glory^(N) in Christ, after you have suffered a little while,^(O) will himself restore you and make you strong,^(P) firm and steadfast. ¹¹ To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.^(Q)

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.^(A) You believe^(B) in God^[a];^(C) believe also in me.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

¹⁵ “If you love me, keep my commands.^{(A) 16} And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate^(B) to help you and be with you forever— ¹⁷ the Spirit of truth.^(C) The world cannot accept him,^(D) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be^[a] in you. ¹⁸ I will not leave you as orphans;^(E) I will come to you.^(F)

²⁷ Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.^(A) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled^(B) and do not be afraid.

²⁸ “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’^(C) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,^(D) for the Father is greater than I.^(E)
