Psalm 15

A Description of the Godly

A Davidic psalm.

Lord, who can dwell in Your tent?(A)
Who can live on Your holy mountain?(B)

The one who lives honestly, practices righteousness,
and acknowledges the truth in his heart(C)
who does not slander with his tongue,(D)
who does not harm his friend
or discredit his neighbor,(E)
who despises the one rejected by the Lord[a]
but honors those who fear the Lord,(F)
who keeps his word whatever the cost,(G)
who does not lend his money at interest(H)
or take a bribe against the innocent(I)
the one who does these things will never be moved.(J)

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 15:4 Lit in his eyes the rejected is despised

Trust the Lord

My son, don’t forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commands;(A)
for they will bring you
many days, a full life,[a](B) and well-being.(C)
Never let loyalty and faithfulness leave you.
Tie them around your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart.(D)
Then you will find favor and high regard
in the sight of God and man.(E)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,(F)
and do not rely on your own understanding;(G)
think about Him in all your ways,
and He will guide you on the right paths.[b](H)
Don’t consider yourself to be wise;(I)
fear the Lord and turn away from evil.(J)
This will be healing for your body[c](K)
and strengthening for your bones.(L)
Honor the Lord with your possessions
and with the first produce of your entire harvest;(M)
10 then your barns will be completely filled,
and your vats will overflow with new wine.(N)
11 Do not despise the Lord’s instruction, my son,
and do not loathe His discipline;(O)
12 for the Lord disciplines the one He loves,
just as a father, the son he delights in.(P)

Wisdom Brings Happiness

13 Happy is a man who finds wisdom(Q)
and who acquires understanding,
14 for she is more profitable than silver,
and her revenue is better than gold.(R)
15 She is more precious than jewels;(S)
nothing you desire compares with her.(T)
16 Long life[d] is in her right hand;
in her left, riches and honor.(U)
17 Her ways are pleasant,(V)
and all her paths, peaceful.
18 She is a tree of life(W) to those who embrace her,
and those who hold on to her are happy.

19 The Lord founded the earth by wisdom(X)
and established the heavens by understanding.
20 By His knowledge the watery depths broke open,(Y)
and the clouds dripped with dew.(Z)

21 Maintain your competence and discretion.
My son, don’t lose sight of them.(AA)
22 They will be life for you[e][f](AB)
and adornment[g] for your neck.
23 Then you will go safely on your way;
your foot will not stumble.(AC)
24 When you lie[h] down, you will not be afraid;(AD)
you will lie down, and your sleep will be pleasant.
25 Don’t fear sudden danger
or the ruin of the wicked when it comes,(AE)
26 for the Lord will be your confidence[i]
and will keep your foot from a snare.(AF)

Treat Others Fairly

27 When it is in your power,[j]
don’t withhold good(AG) from the one it belongs to.
28 Don’t say to your neighbor, “Go away! Come back later.
I’ll give it tomorrow”—when it is there with you.(AH)
29 Don’t plan any harm against your neighbor,(AI)
for he trusts you and lives near you.
30 Don’t accuse anyone without cause,(AJ)
when he has done you no harm.
31 Don’t envy a violent man(AK)
or choose any of his ways;
32 for the devious are detestable to the Lord,
but He is a friend[k] to the upright.(AL)
33 The Lord’s curse is on the household of the wicked,(AM)
but He blesses the home of the righteous;
34 He mocks those who mock,
but gives grace to the humble.(AN)
35 The wise will inherit honor,
but He holds up fools to dishonor.[l]

11 For the grace of God has appeared with salvation[a] for all people,(A) 12 instructing us to deny godlessness(B) and worldly lusts(C) and to live in a sensible, righteous,(D) and godly(E) way in the present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope(F) and appearing of the glory(G) of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 14 He gave Himself for us(H) to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession,(I) eager to do good works.

A Living Hope

Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.(A) According to His great mercy,(B) He has given us a new birth(C) into a living hope(D) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead(E) and into an inheritance that is imperishable,(F) uncorrupted, and unfading, kept in heaven(G) for you. You are being protected by God’s power(H) through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.(I) You rejoice in this,[a] though now for a short time you have had to struggle in various trials(J) so that the genuineness of your faith(K)—more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire(L)—may result(M) in[b] praise, glory, and honor(N) at the revelation of Jesus Christ.(O) You love Him,(P) though you have not seen(Q) Him. And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice(R) with inexpressible and glorious joy, because you are receiving the goal of your[c] faith, the salvation of your souls.[d]

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets(S) who prophesied about the grace that would come to you searched and carefully investigated. 11 They inquired into what time or what circumstances[e] the Spirit of Christ(T) within them was indicating when He testified in advance(U) to the messianic sufferings[f](V) and the glories(W) that would follow.[g] 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you(X) by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.(Y) Angels desire to look into these things.

A Call to Holy Living

13 Therefore, with your minds ready for action,[h](Z) be serious(AA) and set your hope(AB) completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation(AC) of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children,(AD) do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance. 15 But as the One who called you(AE) is holy,(AF) you also are to be holy in all your conduct; 16 for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy.(AG)[i]

17 And if you address as Father the One who judges impartially(AH) based on each one’s work,(AI) you are to conduct yourselves in fear(AJ) during the time of your temporary residence. 18 For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life(AK) inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold,(AL) 19 but with the precious blood of Christ,(AM) like that of a lamb(AN) without defect or blemish. 20 He was chosen[j](AO) before the foundation of the world but was revealed at the end of the times(AP) for you 21 who through Him are believers in God,(AQ) who raised Him from the dead(AR) and gave Him glory,(AS) so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 By obedience to the truth,[k] having purified yourselves[l] for sincere love of the brothers, love one another(AT) earnestly[m] from a pure[n] heart,(AU) 23 since you have been born again(AV)—not of perishable seed(AW) but of imperishable—through the living and enduring word of God.(AX) 24 For

All flesh is like grass,
and all its glory(AY) like a flower of the grass.
The grass withers, and the flower falls,
25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.(AZ)[o]

And this is the word that was preached as the gospel to you.

The Life of the New Man

So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God.(A) Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth.(B) For you have died,(C) and your life is hidden with the Messiah in God. When the Messiah, who is your[a] life, is revealed,(D) then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.(E)

Therefore, put to death what belongs to your worldly nature:[b] sexual immorality, impurity,(F) lust,(G) evil desire, and greed,(H) which is idolatry.(I) Because of these, God’s wrath(J) comes on the disobedient,[c] and you once walked in these things when you were living(K) in them. But now you must also put away(L) all the following: anger,(M) wrath,(N) malice,(O) slander,(P) and filthy language from your mouth.(Q) Do not lie(R) to one another, since you have put off(S) the old self[d](T) with its practices 10 and have put on(U) the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your[e] Creator.(V) 11 In Christ[f] there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian,[g] slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.(W)

The Christian Life

12 Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved,(X) put on heartfelt compassion, kindness,(Y) humility,(Z) gentleness,(AA) and patience,(AB) 13 accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive.(AC) 14 Above all, put on love—the perfect bond of unity. 15 And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called(AD) in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful. 16 Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name(AE) of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
