Do Not Hide Your Face from Me

A Prayer of one afflicted, when he is (A)faint and (B)pours out his complaint before the Lord.

102 (C)Hear my prayer, O Lord;
let my cry (D)come to you!
(E)Do not hide your face from me
    in (F)the day of my distress!
(G)Incline your ear to me;
    (H)answer me speedily (I)in the day when I call!

For my days (J)pass away like smoke,
    and my (K)bones burn like a furnace.
My heart is (L)struck down like grass and (M)has withered;
    I (N)forget to eat my bread.
Because of my loud groaning
    my (O)bones cling to my flesh.
I am like (P)a desert owl of the wilderness,
    like an owl[a] of the waste places;
I (Q)lie awake;
    I am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop.
All the day my enemies taunt me;
    those who (R)deride me (S)use my name for a curse.
For I eat ashes like bread
    and (T)mingle tears with my drink,
10 because of your indignation and anger;
    for you have (U)taken me up and (V)thrown me down.
11 My days are like (W)an evening shadow;
    I (X)wither away like grass.

12 But you, O Lord, are (Y)enthroned forever;
    you (Z)are remembered throughout all generations.
13 You will (AA)arise and have (AB)pity on Zion;
    it is the time to favor her;
    (AC)the appointed time has come.
14 For your servants hold her (AD)stones dear
    and have pity on her dust.
15 Nations will (AE)fear the name of the Lord,
    and all (AF)the kings of the earth will fear your glory.
16 For the Lord (AG)builds up Zion;
    he (AH)appears in his glory;
17 he (AI)regards the prayer of the destitute
    and does not despise their prayer.

  1. Psalm 102:6 The precise identity of these birds is uncertain

(A)Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and (B)do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways (C)acknowledge him,
    and he (D)will make straight your paths.
(E)Be not wise in your own eyes;
    (F)fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be (G)healing to your flesh[a]
    and (H)refreshment[b] to your bones.

Honor the Lord with your wealth
    and with (I)the firstfruits of all your produce;
10 then your (J)barns will be filled with plenty,
    and your vats will be bursting with wine.

11 (K)My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline
    or be weary of his reproof,
12 for the Lord reproves him whom he loves,
    as (L)a father the son in whom he delights.

44 “Our fathers had (A)the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses (B)directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. 45 Our fathers in turn (C)brought it in with Joshua when they (D)dispossessed the nations (E)that God drove out before our fathers. So it was (F)until the days of David, 46 (G)who found favor in the sight of God and (H)asked to find a dwelling place for (I)the God of Jacob.[a] 47 But it was (J)Solomon who built a house for him. 48 (K)Yet the Most High does not dwell (L)in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,

49 (M)“‘Heaven is my throne,
    (N)and the earth is my footstool.
What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,
    or what is the place of my rest?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’

51 (O)“You stiff-necked people, (P)uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. (Q)As your fathers did, so do you. 52 (R)Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of (S)the Righteous One, (T)whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law (U)as delivered by angels and (V)did not keep it.”

The Stoning of Stephen

54 Now when they heard these things (W)they were enraged, and they (X)ground their teeth at him. 55 But he, (Y)full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw (Z)the glory of God, and Jesus standing (AA)at the right hand of God. 56 And he said, “Behold, I see (AB)the heavens opened, and (AC)the Son of Man standing (AD)at the right hand of God.”
