Warning Against the Strange Woman
7 My child, guard my sayings;
store my commandments with you.
2 Keep my commands and live,
and my teaching like the apple of your eye.[a]
3 Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Say to wisdom,[b] “you are my sister,”
and you shall call insight,[c] “intimate friend.”[d]
5 In order to guard yourself from an adulteress,[e]
from the foreigner who makes her words smooth.[f]
6 For at the window of my house,
through my lattice, I looked down.
7 And I saw among the simple,
I observed among the youth,
a young man lacking sense,[g]
8 passing on the street at[h] her corner,
and he takes the road to her house,
9 at twilight, at the day’s evening,
in the midst of night and the darkness.
10 Then behold! A woman comes to meet him
with the garment of a prostitute[i] and a secret heart.[j]
11 She is loud and stubborn;
her feet do not stay at her house.
12 Now in the street, now in the square,
at[k] every corner she lies in wait.
13 She took hold of [l] him and kissed him.
Her face was impudent, and she said to him,
14 “Sacrifices of peace offerings are upon me;
today[m] I completed my vows.
15 So[n] I have come out to meet you,
to seek your face, and I have found you.
16 With coverings I have adorned my couch,
spreads of the linen of Egypt;
17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh,
aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love making,
until the morning let us delight in love.
19 For there is no man[o] in his home;
he has gone on a long journey.[p]
20 The bag of money he took in his hand,
for on the day of the full moon he will come home.”
21 She persuades him with the greatness of her teachings;
with her smooth lips she compels him.
22 He goes after her suddenly;
like an ox to the slaughter he goes,
and like a stag to the instruction of a fool,
23 until an arrow pierces his entrails,[q]
like a bird rushing into a snare,
but he does not know that it will cost him his life.[r]
Reiteration of the Warning Against a Strange Woman
24 And now, my children, listen to me,
and be attentive to the sayings of my mouth.
25 May your heart not turn aside to her ways;
do not stray into her path.
26 For many slain she has laid low,
and countless[s] are all of her killings.
27 The ways of Sheol[t] are her house,
descending to chambers of death.

7 Mon fils, retiens mes paroles, Et garde avec toi mes préceptes.
2 Observe mes préceptes, et tu vivras; Garde mes enseignements comme la prunelle de tes yeux.
3 Lie-les sur tes doigts, Écris-les sur la table de ton coeur.
4 Dis à la sagesse: Tu es ma soeur! Et appelle l'intelligence ton amie,
5 Pour qu'elles te préservent de la femme étrangère, De l'étrangère qui emploie des paroles doucereuses.
6 J'étais à la fenêtre de ma maison, Et je regardais à travers mon treillis.
7 J'aperçus parmi les stupides, Je remarquai parmi les jeunes gens un garçon dépourvu de sens.
8 Il passait dans la rue, près de l'angle où se tenait une de ces étrangères, Et il se dirigeait lentement du côté de sa demeure:
9 C'était au crépuscule, pendant la soirée, Au milieu de la nuit et de l'obscurité.
10 Et voici, il fut abordé par une femme Ayant la mise d'une prostituée et la ruse dans le coeur.
11 Elle était bruyante et rétive; Ses pieds ne restaient point dans sa maison;
12 Tantôt dans la rue, tantôt sur les places, Et près de tous les angles, elle était aux aguets.
13 Elle le saisit et l'embrassa, Et d'un air effronté lui dit:
14 Je devais un sacrifice d'actions de grâces, Aujourd'hui j'ai accompli mes voeux.
15 C'est pourquoi je suis sortie au-devant de toi Pour te chercher, et je t'ai trouvé.
16 J'ai orné mon lit de couvertures, De tapis de fil d'Égypte;
17 J'ai parfumé ma couche De myrrhe, d'aloès et de cinnamome.
18 Viens, enivrons-nous d'amour jusqu'au matin, Livrons-nous joyeusement à la volupté.
19 Car mon mari n'est pas à la maison, Il est parti pour un voyage lointain;
20 Il a pris avec lui le sac de l'argent, Il ne reviendra à la maison qu'à la nouvelle lune.
21 Elle le séduisit à force de paroles, Elle l'entraîna par ses lèvres doucereuses.
22 Il se mit tout à coup à la suivre, Comme le boeuf qui va à la boucherie, Comme un fou qu'on lie pour le châtier,
23 Jusqu'à ce qu'une flèche lui perce le foie, Comme l'oiseau qui se précipite dans le filet, Sans savoir que c'est au prix de sa vie.
24 Et maintenant, mes fils, écoutez-moi, Et soyez attentifs aux paroles de ma bouche.
25 Que ton coeur ne se détourne pas vers les voies d'une telle femme, Ne t'égare pas dans ses sentiers.
26 Car elle a fait tomber beaucoup de victimes, Et ils sont nombreux, tous ceux qu'elle a tués.
27 Sa maison, c'est le chemin du séjour des morts; Il descend vers les demeures de la mort.

7 My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
2 Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
3 Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.
4 Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:
5 That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
6 For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,
7 And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
8 Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,
9 In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
10 And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.
16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.
19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
20 He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.
21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;
23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
24 Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
25 Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.
26 For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
27 Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.
