New King James Version
My Son, Be Wise
27 Do(A) not boast about tomorrow,
For you do not know what a day may bring forth.
2 (B)Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth;
A stranger, and not your own lips.
3 A stone is heavy and sand is weighty,
But a fool’s wrath is heavier than both of them.
4 Wrath is cruel and anger a torrent,
But (C)who is able to stand before jealousy?
5 (D)Open rebuke is better
Than love carefully concealed.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend,
But the kisses of an enemy are (E)deceitful.
7 A satisfied soul [a]loathes the honeycomb,
But to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
8 Like a bird that wanders from its nest
Is a man who wanders from his place.
9 Ointment and perfume delight the heart,
And the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by [b]hearty counsel.
10 Do not forsake your own friend or your father’s friend,
Nor go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity;
(F)Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
11 My son, be wise, and make my heart glad,
(G)That I may answer him who reproaches me.
12 A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself;
The simple pass on and are (H)punished.
13 Take the garment of him who is surety for a stranger,
And hold it in pledge when he is surety for a seductress.
14 He who blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning,
It will be counted a curse to him.
15 A (I)continual dripping on a very rainy day
And a contentious woman are alike;
16 Whoever [c]restrains her restrains the wind,
And grasps oil with his right hand.
17 As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
18 (J)Whoever [d]keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit;
So he who waits on his master will be honored.
19 As in water face reflects face,
So a man’s heart reveals the man.
21 (M)The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,
And a man is valued by what others say of him.
22 (N)Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain,
Yet his foolishness will not depart from him.
23 Be diligent to know the state of your (O)flocks,
And attend to your herds;
24 For riches are not forever,
Nor does a crown endure to all generations.
25 (P)When the hay is removed, and the tender grass shows itself,
And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in,
26 The lambs will provide your clothing,
And the goats the price of a field;
27 You shall have enough goats’ milk for your food,
For the food of your household,
And the nourishment of your maidservants.

4 Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming,
but who can stand before (D)jealousy?
5 (E)Better is open rebuke
than hidden love.
6 Faithful are (F)the wounds of a friend;
profuse are the kisses of an enemy.
7 One who is full loathes (G)honey,
but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet.
8 Like (H)a bird that strays from its nest
is a man who strays from his home.
9 (I)Oil and perfume make the heart glad,
and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.[a]
10 Do not forsake your friend and (J)your father's friend,
and do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity.
(K)Better is a neighbor who is near
than a brother who is far away.

13 (R)Take a man's garment when he has put up security for a stranger,
and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for an adulteress.[b]
14 Whoever blesses his neighbor with a loud voice,
rising early in the morning,
will be counted as cursing.
15 (S)A continual dripping on a rainy day
and a quarrelsome wife are alike;
16 to restrain her is to restrain the wind
or to grasp[c] oil in one's right hand.

18 (T)Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,
and he who (U)guards his master will be honored.
19 As in water face reflects face,
so the heart of man reflects the man.
20 (V)Sheol and Abaddon are (W)never satisfied,
and (X)never satisfied are the eyes of man.
21 (Y)The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold,
and a man is tested by his praise.
22 (Z)Crush a fool in a mortar with a pestle
along with crushed grain,
yet his folly will not depart from him.
23 (AA)Know well the condition of your flocks,
and (AB)give attention to your herds,
24 for (AC)riches do not last forever;
and does a crown endure to all generations?
25 (AD)When the grass is gone and the new growth appears
and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered,
26 (AE)the lambs will provide your clothing,
and the goats the price of a field.
27 (AF)There will be enough goats' milk for your food,
for the food of your household
and maintenance for your girls.

9 Как ароматное масло и благовоние радуют сердце,
так приятно слышать и душевный совет от друга.
10 Не бросай своего друга и друга своего отца;
в беде не беги сразу к родственникам,
ведь друг поблизости будет полезнее, чем родня вдали.
11 Будь мудрым, сын мой, и сердце моё порадуй;
тогда я буду знать, что ответить попрекающему меня.
12 Разумный увидит опасность – и скроется,
а простаки пойдут дальше – и пострадают.
13 Можешь смело забирать одежду у поручившегося за незнакомца;
можешь удержать её в залог у ручавшегося за чужого.[a]
14 Громогласно благословляющего ближнего ранним утром
сочтут проклинающим.
15 Несмолкающая капель в дождливый день
и сварливая жена схожи друг с другом;
16 пытаться сдержать её – что сдерживать ветер
или масло в руке зажать.
17 Как железо оттачивает железо,
так и люди совершенствуют друг друга.
18 Кто возделывает инжир, будет есть его плоды,
а кто заботится о своём господине, будет в чести.
19 Как вода отражает лицо,
так человеческое сердце – человека.
20 Мир мёртвых и царство смерти не знают сытости;
ненасытны и человеческие глаза.
21 В тигле испытывается серебро,
в горне плавильном – золото,
а похвалами – человек.
22 Глупца истолки хоть в ступе,
как пестом пшеницу, –
не отделится от него его глупость.
23 Следи за тем, в каком виде твои отары,
хорошо наблюдай за своими стадами,
24 ведь богатство не вечно,
и власть не на все поколения.
25 Когда вывезут сено, и появится новая поросль,
и станут собирать траву со склонов горных,
26 тогда ягнята одеждой тебя снабдят,
а козлы пойдут на покупку поля.
27 У тебя будет вдоволь козьего молока,
чтобы кормить себя и свою семью
и давать пропитание служанкам.
