Proverbs 15

2 The tongue of the wise makes knowledge attractive,
but the mouth of fools blurts out foolishness.(C)
3 The eyes of the Lord are everywhere,
observing the wicked and the good.(D)
5 A fool despises his father’s discipline,
but a person who accepts correction is sensible.(F)
6 The house of the righteous has great wealth,
but trouble accompanies the income of the wicked.
7 The lips of the wise broadcast knowledge,
but not so the heart of fools.
8 The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable to the Lord,(G)
but the prayer of the upright is His delight.(H)
9 The Lord detests the way of the wicked,
but He loves the one who pursues righteousness.(I)
10 Discipline is harsh for the one who leaves the path;
the one who hates correction will die.
12 A mocker doesn’t love one who corrects him;(L)
he will not consult the wise.
13 A joyful heart makes a face cheerful,
but a sad heart produces a broken spirit.(M)
15 All the days of the oppressed are miserable,
but a cheerful heart has a continual feast.
16 Better a little with the fear of the Lord
than great treasure with turmoil.(P)
19 A slacker’s way is like a thorny hedge,
but the path of the upright is a highway.(U)
20 A wise son brings joy to his father,
but a foolish man despises his mother.(V)
21 Foolishness brings joy to one without sense,
but a man with understanding walks a straight path.(W)
22 Plans fail when there is no counsel,
but with many advisers they succeed.(X)
24 For the discerning the path of life leads upward,
so that he may avoid going down to Sheol.
25 The Lord destroys the house of the proud,
but He protects the widow’s territory.(Z)
26 The Lord detests the plans of an evil man,
but pleasant words are pure.(AA)
27 The one who profits dishonestly(AB) troubles his household,
but the one who hates bribes will live.(AC)
28 The mind of the righteous person thinks before answering,(AD)
but the mouth of the wicked blurts out evil things.(AE)
32 Anyone who ignores discipline despises himself,(AJ)
but whoever listens to correction acquires good sense.[e](AK)
33 The fear of the Lord is what wisdom teaches,
and humility comes before honor.(AL)

A Soft Answer Turns Away Wrath
15 A (A)soft answer turns away wrath,
But (B)a harsh word stirs up anger.
2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly,
(C)But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.
3 (D)The eyes of the Lord are in every place,
Keeping watch on the evil and the good.
4 A [a]wholesome tongue is a tree of life,
But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
6 In the house of the righteous there is much treasure,
But in the revenue of the wicked is trouble.
7 The lips of the wise [c]disperse knowledge,
But the heart of the fool does not do so.
8 (G)The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,
But the prayer of the upright is His delight.
9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,
But He loves him who (H)follows righteousness.
11 (K)Hell[d] and [e]Destruction are before the Lord;
So how much more (L)the hearts of the sons of men.
12 (M)A scoffer does not love one who corrects him,
Nor will he go to the wise.
13 (N)A merry heart makes a cheerful [f]countenance,
But (O)by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
14 The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge,
But the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.
15 All the days of the afflicted are evil,
(P)But he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast.
16 (Q)Better is a little with the fear of the Lord,
Than great treasure with trouble.
17 (R)Better is a dinner of [g]herbs where love is,
Than a fatted calf with hatred.
18 (S)A wrathful man stirs up strife,
But he who is slow to anger allays contention.
19 (T)The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns,
But the way of the upright is a highway.
20 (U)A wise son makes a father glad,
But a foolish man despises his mother.
21 (V)Folly is joy to him who is destitute of [h]discernment,
(W)But a man of understanding walks uprightly.
22 (X)Without counsel, plans go awry,
But in the multitude of counselors they are established.
25 (AB)The Lord will destroy the house of the proud,
But (AC)He will establish the boundary of the widow.
26 (AD)The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord,
(AE)But the words of the pure are pleasant.
27 (AF)He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house,
But he who hates bribes will live.
28 The heart of the righteous (AG)studies how to answer,
But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.
30 The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,
And a good report makes the bones [k]healthy.
31 The ear that hears the rebukes of life
Will abide among the wise.
32 He who disdains instruction despises his own soul,
But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding.
33 (AJ)The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom,
And (AK)before honor is humility.

15 Met een vriendelijk antwoord kalmeer je iemand die woedend is.
Maar met beledigende woorden maak je hem juist kwaad.
2 Wijze mensen zeggen verstandige dingen.
Dwaze mensen praten alleen maar onzin.
3 De Heer ziet alles wat er gebeurt.
Hij ziet de daden van goede en van slechte mensen.
4 Vriendelijke woorden zijn als een levensboom.
Maar verkeerde woorden kunnen een leven kapotmaken.
5 Een dwaas luistert niet naar de goede raad van zijn vader.
Maar een verstandig mens doet er iets mee.
6 In het huis van een goed mens is grote rijkdom.
Maar de winst van een slecht mens brengt hem alleen maar ongeluk.
7 Wijze mensen spreken verstandige woorden.
Maar zelfs de gedachten van dwaze mensen zijn nutteloos.
8 De Heer haat het als slechte mensen Hem offers brengen.
Maar Hij is blij met het gebed van goede mensen.
9 De Heer haat de manier van leven van slechte mensen.
Maar Hij houdt van eerlijke mensen.
10 Als je het rechte pad verlaat, word je streng gestraft.
Als je je leven dan nog niet betert, zul je sterven.
11 Zelfs het dodenrijk en de dood kunnen niets voor de Heer verborgen houden.
Dan zal Hij toch zeker óók weten wat er in de harten van de mensen is!
12 Trotse mensen houden er niet van om goede raad te krijgen.
Ze zullen nooit aan een wijs mens om raad gaan vragen.
13 Als je blij bent, kijk je vrolijk.
Maar door verdriet word je moedeloos.
14 Een verstandig mens verlangt naar wijsheid.
Maar een dwaas praat alleen maar onzin.
15 Voor een ongelukkig mens is elke dag een ramp.
Maar blije mensen genieten alle dagen.
16 Het is beter niet veel te bezitten maar wel diep ontzag voor de Heer te hebben,
dan rijk te zijn zonder vrede in je hart.
17 Het is beter om niet veel te hebben en van elkaar te houden,
dan alles te hebben wat je hebben wil, terwijl je elkaar haat.
18 Driftige mensen veroorzaken ruzie.
Maar geduldige mensen weten ruzies te sussen.
19 Het leven van luie mensen is als een weg vol doornstruiken.
Maar het leven van eerlijke mensen is als een vlak en goed begaanbaar pad.
20 Ouders zijn blij als hun zoon verstandig is.
Maar een dwaze zoon minacht zijn ouders.
21 Onverstandige mensen genieten van dwaasheid.
Maar verstandige mensen weten de juiste beslissingen te nemen.
22 Plannen mislukken als er niet goed over nagedacht wordt.
Maar goede plannen ontstaan door aan veel raadgevers om raad te vragen.
23 Het is fijn om een goed antwoord te geven.
Wat heerlijk is het juiste woord op de juiste tijd!
24 Het leven van verstandige mensen gaat steeds verder omhoog.
Daardoor ontsnappen ze aan het dodenrijk beneden.
25 De Heer vernietigt het bezit van slechte mensen.
Maar Hij bewaakt de akkers van de weduwen.
26 De Heer haat de gedachten van slechte mensen.
Maar Hij geniet van de vriendelijke woorden van goede mensen.
27 Door hebzucht loopt het slecht met je af.
Maar als je je niet laat omkopen, zul je leven.
28 Goede mensen denken na over hun antwoord.
Maar slechte mensen praten maar door en zeggen alleen maar slechte dingen.
29 De Heer blijft ver weg van mensen die zich niets van Hem aantrekken.
Maar Hij beantwoordt de gebeden van mensen die leven zoals Hij het wil.
30 Vriendelijke ogen maken je blij.
Van goed nieuws voel je je goed.
31 Als je luistert naar goede raad,
hoor je bij de wijze mensen.
32 Als je een waarschuwing aan de kant schuift, doe je jezelf kwaad.
Maar als je ernaar luistert, word je verstandig.
33 Van diep ontzag voor de Heer word je wijs.
Als je bescheiden bent, zul je worden geprezen.
