Introduction and Purpose
1 The proverbs of David’s son Solomon, king of Israel.
2 These proverbs are[a] for gaining[b] wisdom and discipline;[c]
for understanding words of insight;
3 for acquiring the discipline[d] that produces wise behavior,
righteousness, justice, and upright living;[e]
4 for giving prudence to the naïve,
and knowledge and discretion to the young.
5 Let the wise listen and increase their[f] learning;
let the person of understanding receive guidance
6 in understanding proverbs, clever sayings,
words of the wise, and their riddles.
The Major Theme
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.[g]
The Minor Theme
8 My son, listen to your father’s instruction,
and do not let go of your mother’s teaching.
9 They will be a graceful wreath for your head
and a chain for your neck.
Avoid Evil Counsel
10 My son, if sinners entice you,
do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us!
Let’s lie in wait for blood;
let’s ambush some innocent person for no reason at all.
12 Let’s swallow them alive like Sheol,[h]
and whole like those who go down into the Pit.[i]
13 We’ll find all kinds of valuable wealth,
and we’ll fill our houses with spoil.
14 Throw your lot in with us,
and all of us will have one purse.”
15 My son, do not go along with them,[j]
and keep your feet away from their paths!
16 For they[k] run toward evil;
these enticers[l] shed blood without hesitation.[m]
17 Look, it is useless to spread a net in full view of[n] all the birds,
18 but these people[o] lie in wait for their own blood.[p]
They ambush only themselves.
19 Such is the way of all those who seek illicit gain—
it takes away the lives of those who possess it.
The Benefits of Choosing Wisdom
20 Wisdom cries out in the street;
she raises her voice in the public squares.
21 She calls out at the busiest part[q] of the noisy streets,[r]
and at the entrance to the gates of the city she utters her words:
22 “You naïve ones, how long will you love naiveté?
And how long will scoffers delight in scoffing
or fools hate knowledge?”
23 Return to my correction!
Look, I will pour out my spirit on you,
and I will make my words known to you.
The Consequences of Refusing Wisdom
24 “Because I called out to you and you refused to respond—[s]
I appealed,[t] but no one paid attention—
25 because[u] you neglected all my advice
and did not want my correction,
26 I will laugh at your calamity.
I will mock when what you fear[v] comes,
27 when what you dread comes like a storm,
and your calamity comes on like a whirlwind,
when distress and anguish come upon you.
28 “Then they will call out to me,
but I will not answer;
they will seek me diligently,
but they will not find me.
29 “Because they hated knowledge
and did not choose the fear of the Lord;
30 they did not want my advice,
and they rejected all my correction.
31 They will eat the fruit[w] of their way,
and they will be filled with their own devices.
32 Indeed, the waywardness[x] of the naïve will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them.
33 “But the person who listens to me will live safely
and will be secure from the fear of evil.”

The Beginning of Knowledge
1 (A)The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
2 To know wisdom and instruction,
to understand words of insight,
3 to receive instruction in wise dealing,
in (B)righteousness, justice, and equity;
4 to give prudence to (C)the simple,
knowledge and (D)discretion to the youth—
5 Let the wise hear and (E)increase in learning,
and the one who understands obtain guidance,
6 to understand a proverb and a saying,
(F)the words of the wise and their (G)riddles.
7 (H)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.
The Enticement of Sinners
8 (I)Hear, my son, your father's instruction,
and forsake not your mother's teaching,
9 for they are (J)a graceful garland for your head
and (K)pendants for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners (L)entice you,
do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us, (M)let us lie in wait for blood;
(N)let us ambush the innocent without reason;
12 like Sheol let us (O)swallow them alive,
and whole, like (P)those who go down to the pit;
13 we shall find all precious goods,
we shall fill our houses with plunder;
14 throw in your lot among us;
we will all have one purse”—
15 my son, (Q)do not walk in the way with them;
(R)hold back your foot from their paths,
16 for (S)their feet run to evil,
and they make haste to shed blood.
17 (T)For in vain is a net spread
in the sight of any bird,
18 but these men (U)lie in wait for their own blood;
they (V)set an ambush for their own lives.
19 (W)Such are the ways of everyone who is (X)greedy for unjust gain;
(Y)it takes away the life of its possessors.
The Call of Wisdom
20 (Z)Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
in the markets she raises her voice;
21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
at (AA)the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
22 “How long, O (AB)simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will (AC)scoffers delight in their scoffing
and fools (AD)hate knowledge?
23 If you turn at my reproof,[a]
behold, I will (AE)pour out my spirit to you;
I will make my words known to you.
24 (AF)Because I have called and (AG)you refused to listen,
have (AH)stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
25 because you have (AI)ignored all my counsel
and (AJ)would have none of my reproof,
26 I also (AK)will laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when (AL)terror strikes you,
27 when terror strikes you like (AM)a storm
and your calamity comes like a whirlwind,
when distress and anguish come upon you.

ଉପକ୍ରମ
1 ଏହି ହିତୋପଦେଶଗୁଡ଼ିକ ହେଉଛି, ଦାଉଦଙ୍କର ପୁତ୍ର ଶଲୋମନଙ୍କର। ଶଲୋମନ ଇସ୍ରାଏଲର ରାଜା ଥିଲେ। 2 ଏହି ହିତୋପଦେଶ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ବୁଦ୍ଧିମାନ କରିବ। ଏବଂ ସେମାନେ ଜାଣି ପାରିବେ କେଉଁ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟଟି ଠିକ୍। ଜ୍ଞାନ ଓ ଉପଦେଶ ବୁଝିବାକୁ ଏହି ବାକ୍ୟମାନ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କରିବ। 3 ଏହି ଉପଦେଶ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କର ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦେଶ ଠିକ୍ ବାଟରେ କରିବ। ଏହା ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲୋକମାନେ ସଚ୍ଚୋଟତା, ସାଧୁତା ଓ ନ୍ୟାୟ ଶିକ୍ଷା କରିବେ। 4 ଏହି ଉପଦେଶଗୁଡ଼ିକ ସେହି ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ଶିକ୍ଷା ଦେଇ ପାରିବ, ଯେଉଁମାନେ କି ଜ୍ଞାନ ଆହରଣ କରିବାକୁ ଗ୍ଭହାନ୍ତି। ଏହି ଉପଦେଶଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଯୁବା ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ଜ୍ଞାନ ଓ ଏହାକୁ କିପରି ବ୍ୟବହାର କରିବାକୁ ହୁଏ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ଶିକ୍ଷା ଦିଏ। 5 ଏପରିକି ବୁଦ୍ଧିମାନ ଲୋକମାନେ ଏହି ବାକ୍ୟଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଶୁଣିବା ଉଚିତ୍। ଏଥିରୁ ସେମାନେ ବହୁଜ୍ଞାନ ଲାଭ କରିବେ। ଶିକ୍ଷିତ ଲୋକମାନେ ଏପରିକି ଅଧିକ ବୁଝାମଣା ଶକ୍ତି ପାଇବେ। 6 ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକମାନେ, ଯିଏ କି ଏହି ହିତୋପଦେଶ ଶୁଣନ୍ତି, ଜ୍ଞାନୀଲୋକ କହି ଯାଇଥିବା କଥା ବୁଝିବାରେ ସକ୍ଷମ ହେବେ ଏବଂ ଗୁପ୍ତ ରହିଥିବା ଗଳ୍ପର ଅର୍ଥ ମଧ୍ୟ ବୁଝିପାରିବେ। ସେମାନେ ଜ୍ଞାନୀମାନଙ୍କର କହିଥିବା ହିତଜନକ ପରାମର୍ଶ ବୁଝିପାରିବେ।
7 ପ୍ରଥମେ ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କୁ ସମ୍ମାନ କରିବା ଏବଂ ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କ ବାକ୍ୟ ମାନି ଚଳିବା ଜଣେ ବ୍ୟକ୍ତି ଏହା ଶିକ୍ଷା କରିବା ଉଚିତ୍। ଏଥିରେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ବାସ୍ତବ ଜ୍ଞାନ ବୃଦ୍ଧି ଘଟିବ। କିନ୍ତୁ ନିର୍ବୋଧଲୋକମାନେ ଜ୍ଞାନ ଓ ଉପଦେଶକୁ ତୁଚ୍ଛ କରନ୍ତି।
ଶଲୋମନ ତାଙ୍କ ପୁତ୍ରଙ୍କୁ ଉପଦେଶ ଦେଲେ
8 ହେ ମୋର ପୁତ୍ର, ତୁମ୍ଭର ପିତାଙ୍କର ଉପଦେଶ ଶୁଣ, ଯେତେବେଳେ ସେ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ଶୃଙ୍ଖଳିତ କରନ୍ତି ଏବଂ ତୁମ୍ଭ ମାତାଙ୍କର ଉପଦେଶ ପରିତ୍ୟାଗ କର ନାହିଁ। 9 ତୁମ୍ଭର ପିତା ଓ ମାତା, ଯାହାକିଛି ଶିକ୍ଷା ଦିଅନ୍ତି, ସେହି ବାକ୍ୟଗୁଡ଼ିକ ତୁମ୍ଭର ପାଇଁ ଆଶୀର୍ବାଦ ଫୁଲମାଳ ପରି ଅଟେ ଏବଂ ତୁମ୍ଭର ଗଳା ପାଇଁ ହାର ଅଟେ।
10 ହେ ମୋର ପୁତ୍ର, ପାପୀମାନେ ପାପକର୍ମ କରିବାକୁ ଭଲ ପାଆନ୍ତି ଏବଂ ସେହିପରି ଲୋକମାନେ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ କୁକାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କରାଇବାକୁ ପ୍ରବର୍ତ୍ତାଇବେ। ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ତୁମ୍ଭର ସମ୍ମତି ଦିଅ ନାହିଁ। 11 ସେହି ଲୋକମାନେ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ କହିପାରନ୍ତି, “ଆମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ସହିତ ଆସ, ଆମ୍ଭେମାନେ ରକ୍ତପାତ କରିବାକୁ ଗ୍ଭହିଁ ବସୁ। ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦୋଷମାନଙ୍କୁ ବିନା କାରଣରେ ଧରିବାକୁ ଗୁପ୍ତରେ ଲୁଚି ରହୁ। 12 ଆମ୍ଭେମାନେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ହତ୍ୟା କରିବା। ଆମ୍ଭେମାନେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ମୃତ୍ୟୁର ସ୍ଥାନକୁ ପଠାଇବା। ଆମ୍ଭେମାନେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ବିନାଶ କରି କବରକୁ ପଠାଇବା। 13 ଆମ୍ଭେମାନେ ତହିଁରୁ ସବୁପ୍ରକାର ବହୁମୂଲ୍ୟ ଧନ ପାଇବା। ଲୁଟିତ ଦ୍ରବ୍ୟରେ ଆମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ଗୃହକୁ ପରିପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ କରିବା। 14 ତେଣୁ ଆସ ଆମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ସହିତ ଯୋଗ ଦିଅ, ଏବଂ ଆମ୍ଭେ ସମସ୍ତେ ଯାହା ପାଇବା ତାହା ବାଣ୍ଟ କରିବା।”
15 ହେ ମୋର ପୁତ୍ର, ଏପରି ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ଅନୁସରଣ କର ନାହିଁ। ଏପରି ପଥରେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ପାଦ ଦିଅ ନାହିଁ। 16 ସେହି ପାପୀ ଲୋକମାନେ ସର୍ବଦା ପାପ କରିବାକୁ ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତ ଥା’ନ୍ତି। ସେମାନେ ସର୍ବଦା ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ହତ୍ୟା କରିବାକୁ ଗ୍ଭହାନ୍ତି।
17 ପକ୍ଷୀମାନଙ୍କୁ ଧରିବା ପାଇଁ ଲୋକମାନେ ଜାଲ ବିଛାଇ ଥା’ନ୍ତି। କିନ୍ତୁ କୌଣସି ପକ୍ଷୀ ଆଗରେ ଜାଲ ବିଛାଇବା ବ୍ୟର୍ଥ ଅଟେ। 18 ତେଣୁ ଏହି ଲୋକମାନେ ଗୁପ୍ତରେ ଛକି ବସନ୍ତି ଅନ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କୁ ହତ୍ୟା କରିବା ପାଇଁ। କିନ୍ତୁ ବାସ୍ତବରେ ସେମାନେ ନିଜ ନିଜର ପ୍ରାଣକୁ ଧରିବା ପାଇଁ ଜାଲ ବିଛାଇଥା’ନ୍ତି। 19 ସମସ୍ତ ଧନ ଲୋଭୀର ଗତି ଏହିପରି। ତାହା ଧନର ଅଧିକାରୀମାନଙ୍କର ପ୍ରାଣ ନାଶ କରେ।
ଜଣେ ଉତ୍ତମ ସ୍ତ୍ରୀର ଜ୍ଞାନ
20 ଶୁଣ! ଜ୍ଞାନ ରାସ୍ତାଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଉପରେ ଉଚ୍ଚ ସ୍ୱରରେ ଡାକେ। ସର୍ବସାଧାରଣ ଛକଗୁଡ଼ିକରେ ତା'ର ସ୍ୱର ଶୁଣାଏ। 21 ସେ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କର ପ୍ରଧାନ ସ୍ଥାନରେ ଡାକଇ। ନଗର ଦ୍ୱାରର ପ୍ରବେଶ ସ୍ଥାନରେ, ନଗର ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଆପଣାର ବାକ୍ୟ ଉଚ୍ଚାରଣ କରି କହେ।
22 “ହେ ନିର୍ବୋଧଗଣ। କେତେକାଳ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ନିରର୍ଥକ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କରିବାକୁ ଭଲ ପାଇବ? କେତେକାଳ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ନିନ୍ଦୁକ ଜ୍ଞାନକୁ ପରିହାସ କରିବ? ହେ ମୂର୍ଖମାନେ ଆଉ କେତେକାଳ ବିଦ୍ୟାକୁ ଘୃଣା କରିବ? 23 ମୋର ବାକ୍ୟକୁ ସାବଧାନର ସହିତ ଶୁଣ। ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କୁ ଜାଣିଥିବା କଥାସବୁ କହିବି। ମୁଁ ଆପଣା ବାକ୍ୟସବୁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କୁ ଜଣାଇବି।
24 “କିନ୍ତୁ ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ମୋର ଶିକ୍ଷା ଶୁଣିବାକୁ ନାସ୍ତି କଲ। ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କରିବାକୁ ଚେଷ୍ଟା କଲି। ମୁଁ ହାତ ବଢ଼ାଇଲି କିନ୍ତୁ ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ମୋର ସାହାଯ୍ୟ ଗ୍ରହଣ କରିବାକୁ ମନାକଲ। 25 ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ମୋର ସମସ୍ତ ବାକ୍ୟକୁ ହେୟ ଜ୍ଞାନ କଲ। ମୋର କୌଣସି ଅନୁଯୋଗକୁ ଗ୍ଭହିଁଲ ନାହିଁ। 26 ତେଣୁ ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ବିପଦ ବେଳେ ହସିବି। ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ଅସୁବିଧା ସମୟରେ ମୁଁ ପରିହାସ କରିବି। 27 ପ୍ରଚଣ୍ଡ ଝଡ଼ପରି ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ଧ୍ୱଂସ ଆସିବ। ଏହା ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ଆଘାତ କରିବ ଏବଂ ଘୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିବାୟୁ ପରି ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ପୋଡ଼ି ପକାଇବ। ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ଅସୁବିଧା ଓ ଦୁଃଖ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ବୋଝ ହେବ।
28 “ଯେତେବେଳେ ଏହିସବୁ ଘଟିବ, ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ମୋର ସାହାଯ୍ୟ ଲୋଡ଼ିବ। କିନ୍ତୁ ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କରିବି ନାହିଁ। ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ମୋତେ ଖୋଜିବ। କିନ୍ତୁ ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ମୋତେ ପାଇବ ନାହିଁ। 29 ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କୁ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କରିବି ନାହିଁ, କାରଣ ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ମୋର ଜ୍ଞାନ ଗ୍ରହଣ କଲ ନାହିଁ, ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ଏହା ଘୃଣାକର। ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କୁ ସମ୍ମାନ ଦେବା ପାଇଁ ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ନାସ୍ତି କଲ। 30 ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ନିଜ ଇଚ୍ଛାରେ ବାସ କଲ, ତୁମ୍ଭେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ନିଜର ମନ୍ଦବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥାଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଅନୁସରଣ କଲ। ତେଣୁ ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ନିଜ କର୍ମର ଫଳ ନିଶ୍ଚୟ ଗ୍ରହଣ କରିବ। 31 ନିର୍ବୋଧଲୋକମାନେ ନିର୍ବୋଧ ଜୀବନଶୈଳିରେ ପରିଗ୍ଭଳିତ ହୁଅନ୍ତି, ଯାହା ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ବିନାଶ କରିବ। ନିର୍ବୋଧମାନେ କୁକର୍ମର ପ୍ରତିଫଳ ନିମନ୍ତେ ସେମାନେ ଧ୍ୱଂସ ପାଇବେ।
32 “କିନ୍ତୁ ଯେକେହି ମୋର କଥା ଶୁଣିବ, ସେ ସୁରକ୍ଷାରେ ପ୍ରବେଶ କରିବ। ତାହାର କେବେହେଲେ କୌଣସି ଦୁର୍ଭାଗ୍ୟ ନ ଥିବ। 33 ମାତ୍ର ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକ ମୋର ବାକ୍ୟ ମାନି ଚଳେ। ସେ ନିରାପଦରେ ବାସ କରିବ, ତା'ର ଅମଙ୍ଗଳ ହେବ ନାହିଁ।”

doing what is right and just and fair;
4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,[a](D)

and let the discerning get guidance—
6 for understanding proverbs and parables,(G)
the sayings and riddles(H) of the wise.[b](I)

Prologue: Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom
Warning Against the Invitation of Sinful Men
8 Listen, my son,(M) to your father’s(N) instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.(O)

Wisdom’s Rebuke
20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,(AE)
she raises her voice in the public square;
21 on top of the wall[d] she cries out,
at the city gate she makes her speech:
22 “How long will you who are simple(AF) love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate(AG) knowledge?
23 Repent at my rebuke!
Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
I will make known to you my teachings.
24 But since you refuse(AH) to listen when I call(AI)
and no one pays attention(AJ) when I stretch out my hand,
25 since you disregard all my advice
and do not accept my rebuke,
26 I in turn will laugh(AK) when disaster(AL) strikes you;
I will mock(AM) when calamity overtakes you(AN)—
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when disaster(AO) sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer;(AP)
they will look for me but will not find me,(AQ)
29 since they hated knowledge
and did not choose to fear the Lord.(AR)
30 Since they would not accept my advice
and spurned my rebuke,(AS)
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways
and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.(AT)
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them;(AU)
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety(AV)
and be at ease, without fear of harm.”(AW)
