New English Translation

¹⁵My child, do not go down^[a] their way,^[b]
withhold yourself^[c] from their path;^[d]

Proverbs 1:15 tn Heb “do not walk.”
Proverbs 1:15 tn Heb “in the way with them.”
Proverbs 1:15 tn Heb “your foot.” The term “foot” (רֶגֶל, regel) is a synecdoche of part (= your foot) for the whole person (= yourself).
Proverbs 1:15 sn The word “path” (נְתִיבָה, n^etivah) like the word “way” (דֶּרֶךְ, derekh) is used as an idiom (developed from a hypocatastasis), meaning “conduct, course of life.”

¹⁶“^(A)Wash yourselves, ^(B)purify yourselves;
^(C)Remove the evil of your deeds from before My eyes.
^(D)Cease to do evil,

¹⁶^[a] Wash! Cleanse yourselves!
Remove your sinful deeds^[b]
from my sight.
Stop sinning.

Isaiah 1:16 sn Having demonstrated the people’s guilt, the Lord calls them to repentance, which will involve concrete action in the socio-economic realm, not mere emotion.
Isaiah 1:16 sn This phrase refers to Israel’s covenant treachery (cf. Deut 28:10; Jer 4:4; 21:12; 23:2, 22; 25:5; 26:3; 44:22; Hos 9:15; Ps 28:4). In general, the noun מַעַלְלֵיכֶם (maʿalleykhem) can simply be a reference to deeds, whether good or bad. However, Isaiah always uses it with a negative connotation (cf. 3:8, 10).
